My husband has discovered the joy of gardening and we have enjoyed lovely home grown vegies over the past 12 months. I asked him about lemongrass and he sent me to your link. Apparently you are one of his favorite sources of information and I can see why. You are both ex army and both share a similar sense of humour. Thank you for your advice. It has gotten this fella of mine out into the yard, playing in the dirt and producing gorgeous food. Looking forward to my lemon grass teas and flavoursome food. From Cootamundra, NSW.
You can cut the lemon stalks from the grocery to about 2 or 3 inches from the bottom. Let them sit in the water until a few new roots sprout out, then plant them 45 degrees, not upright. They will have thicker stalks, grow faster, and new baby stalks sprout out quicker.
I have done that. A year or so later, I had to hire someone to remove it - it was humongous and massive. The commercial variety must be more robust. Next time I will keep it in a pot.
I have always planted my store bought lemon grass in an upright position and they grow fine but the stalks are not large and they're not full and tall as Marcus has it. I'm gonna grow them at 45 degree angle this year. Thanks for sharing your tip Christine Nguyen
Hah! Great video. We are in northern California, grow zone 8. My wife is from Vietnam. A year ago, she purchased lemon grass in a local market and simply planted it in our back yard. Not only did it grow like crazy, it survived last winter. This past summer, we planted more. We had a summer of 40 C degree days. The more we watered, the more it grew. We now have an entire row of lemon grass. We cut it back all the time for use in tea and soups but the plants come right back. What a satisfying discovery. :-)
Whats your favorite recipe? I had 2 small stocks and 1 died. 1 seems to be surviving, and I'm hoping it'll grow over time before I lose both. 🤞 Whats your favorite recipe and does yours get full sun, part shade, or ?
In the Caribbean this is commonly called fever grass. When we are sick we make tea and this helps reduce the fever. And it really does grow like a bush in our yards
It does indeed repel mosquitoes. But you need to bruise the leaves to release the essential oils to get the repellant effect. Pick a bunch of leaves and scrunch them or twist them and lay them near where you are working. Or, after doing that, rub your hands, which will have residual lemongrass oil, over your arms, legs and face.
I like to cook a lot of Thai food, but they don't sell lemongrass at the local grocery store, so I need to buy it online, making it one of the most expensive ingredients. So this video is really useful to me. I just bought a thousand lemongrass seeds for a little over a dollar and fifty cents. If it grows successfully in my backyard, this will instantly go from one of my most expensive ingredients to my cheapest. Thank you very much for this video. :-D
If you live in a state or area with Cambodians, Vietnamese and Thai community there's always Asian stores with Lemongrass available always. Because we use a lot of Lemongrass besides for Curry. But of course if we don't live in your area there wouldn't be stores there.
When you buy it from the store, you can grow more from it. They often have the root removed before it gets to market, which can be regrown, but you can chop the bottom .5 to 1 inch and sit in water. An easy rooter. Plus, they split easily. I have never been able to get the seed to grow for me. But don't be discouraged. I bought 1 stalk lol last fall. I don't have a batch yet (zone 55 so my baby is in a pot) but i got a cup of tea from trimming its leaves. You can do it!
I moved from NY to rural Virginia, and no lemongrass here, either! Strange, I can't find all sorts of stuff here in VA, at the supermarket, however, there are other foods that I never had seen, like cherrwine soda, and country ham, boiled peanuts...and weird meats. I guess every region has its local favorite food to stock! I miss having lots of ethnic foods to choose from, and certain stuff in NY, but that's about it! I don't miss the traffic! I like the idea of actually growing my lemongrass, anyhow
Tip #N, lemongrass also is planted around the houses or as fences to deter wild beasts such as tigers in southeast Asia countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Sumatra etc., in rural areas such as countryside and hills and mountainous landscapes. Typical Asian family cooking use lemongrass so often, we are accustomed to it. Yes, I was born in Vietnam and still cooking with lemongrass everyday ❤. Thought I’d shared.
At the end of the video I like your comment. "What we do in life, echoes in eternity". As a Christian I've always tried to remember that. Great philosophy!
Over here in Assam, India, tea planters use lemongrass as a fencing around the huge lengthy garden boundaries which serves also as a deterrent to snake invasion and infestation inside gardens.
My families in the countryside do the same too, they plant them on the edge of their lands (as fence substitute) to keep venomous animals and bad bugs away. We may learn it from the Indians a long time ago! 😊👍❤ (I live in Sumatra, Indonesia!)
Brilliant tip!!! This is why reading comments is so valuable, in my opinion. I am worried about mice attracting snakes, in our barn, this is a wonderful repellent idea, and I will be sure to try it.
I planted Lemon Grass seeds in Mar in a plastic tote. This video answered every question I had on what to do next before winter arrives. Thank You. BTW I'll be ordering the metal raised beds in a few month to take my gardening to new heights.
I live in Florida and the reason why I planted my lemongrass 2 years ago was to help with the mosquitoes. I literally laughed out loud when you said to help with mosquitoes but it doesn't lol 😂 Now here I am looking at UA-cam for ways to use my lemongrass since it didn't help with mosquitoes at all!

I grow lemongrass in pots mostly for the leaves to make tea occasionally, but you've inspired me to put some in the ground. I've got a weedy, clay bound yard that seems to grow only plaintain, dandelions, clover and something sharp and pokey... I'd love to grow a border plant that was also edible. I thought about basil, but I like the idea of the lemongrass. I live in zone 7b so we get hard freezed a couple of times a year, so I guess I could pull it all out, and just replant it. I didn't know the leaves could be used as mulch. I'll consider that once I have an abundance. And I hope deer don't like to eat it. That is another reason I am balked in my garden expeditions , deer eat all of my progress and it's very depressing to do all that hard work just to discover it destroyed overnight.
I.understand ...In the tropics it's macaque monkeys ...so disappointing when your six precious tomatoes get ripped off still green... I know why they culll animals... ..
Your video sharing is amazing with so many uses of lemongrass. This is a very easy plant to grow that I tried in 3 ways of growing in water, in soil, and in sand. 100% survival rate. ❤🎉❤
Marcus, we grow it all year round, we live in the hot tropics, our soil is clay and it loves wet feet! Bit opposite to your tips but maybe different in your climate. We use it for fence lines and drains to filter and slow the water flow. You can sit it in water to start the roots or jut put it straight in the ground.
I live in Sumatra Island (Indonesia, tropical climate). Yes I agree with you, here we're also stick lemongrass in any DAMP soil and they will grow abundantly without any care needed. People planted them in public gardens/ponds so anyone in need can always take them for home cooking/medicinal purposes (personal/non-commercial use of course). It's believed to be some venomous animals and bad bugs repellent as well. I love using them the most in curries and stir-fries recipes. 🤤👍❤
The Russell Crowe bit gave me a chuckle. I recently found your channel and I’m so glad I did. You remind me of my Pa who I lost a few years ago. I’m always sad I can’t ask him about preserving vegetables, gardening and composting and all the self sufficient peaceful ways he lived his life in the mid north coast. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and being honest and real in all your videos. Oh wow, thank you for this tip. I already potted mine recently and worried as I didn't root it in water. Also didn't add peatmoss so hopefully roots won't drown
I am fr, Thailand I bought the lemongrass two-three bunches and put them in the water then waited until it rooted then plant it into the ground. Water and some plants food they grow well. As for the next yr I ( in winter ) I put the lemongrass in the good size bucket with water about five inches I keep it in my house until the next Spring. And I made Thais fried chicken wings with lemongrass it’s the best things….!
Lemongrass also makes excellent paper. Yes it is a great mulch (due to the excellent fibre). I love it and have lots of it where I live. Thanks for the tips. Time to separate and rejuvenate my lemongrass this weekend. Cheers with lemongrass tea.
Yep. Still a great video. I acquired some starts this year from a local lady. I started 3 in each bucket and I now have 6 buckets that are doing very well. I've given away 2 buckets all ready and some of the original starts I purchased. I can't wait to divide and propogate. Hurray!!!
I buy them $1/bundle at Asian markets. Cut 3/4 of top off, stick the stalks on the ground. I get fresh lemongrass June-October in the Midwest (US) zone 5. I use the leaves tied up in bundles or a few 3" stalks with a few kaffire lime leaves as soup base especially fresh chicken soups. Also, I use stalks as skewers when doing bbq. You can also use chopped/minced stalks in marinades for pork and chicken.
Is this considered an invasive species (similar to bamboo) that can grow out of control? We’re thinking about planting for cooking, but also for mosquito repellent.
Not invasive. For a container, I would plant 3 stalks (5-6 inch stalks) per 5 gallon container. You can root the stalks in a cup of water (cut off the hard end of the stalks, cover 1-2" in water and should root in 5-8 days).
Thank you for the useful info. My family love lemongrass. We put it in Asian dishes; even making some hot or cold drinks as it has an aroma scent, it makes me feel relaxed every time I consume it. I have been planting lemongrass from seeds every year for 3 years in containers. I would say it grow massively quite easily with the right time and temperatures.
I love all your Videos Mark, they're great to watch, fun and super informative, Since I have been off work due to injury I've watched your Videos constantly, can't get enough, keep up the awesome work!!
My lemongrass are growing very well years ago. Now am having some problems growing them. Am so Glad that I came across saw your video and thank you for sharing your tips of growing them. Thumbs up and Hopefully will get a Good harvest….😍💕
I'm also have many plants of lemon grass because as a healer for free for the sickness with our blood, it's one of the main ingredient for curing high BP up to stroke.
I'm happy that we've managed to propagate 1 lemongrass into probably 100 heads now.. XD It's really one of the greatest achievements in gardening in my oppinion. The same with our sweet basils, started from 1, and is now 100's. both plants never seeded.
You might be interested to know I grew it on the Central Coast of NSW with no problem...the spot did have good drainage, as you advocate. I am also growing it here in Sydney in a sunny, flat spot this time, but with free-draining soil. I didn't know to cut it back in winter, so now I will; makes total sense. Excellent tips; thanks.
I have learned more in watching your vids than my Dad and I have learned together by trial...Thanks so much for doing what you do & teaching newbies like me (I won't tell my Daddy he was misinformed)..please continue to post new vids 😊
Thank you - just the info I needed. You have become my favorite garden channel - it helps that our climates are the same in Tampa Bay Florida as in your corner of Australia:). Now I'm off to whack the lemongrass and divide for more. I'm ready for some tea and recipe ideas.
As it's a grass I wondered about your comparison with lucerne, a legume whose roots have nitrogen-fixing bacteria. A quick search on the internet shows lemongrass to be a nitrogen-hungry plant, so I guess if you've fed it the correct fertiliser to grow well, it will then have nitrogen in it to use as a mulch around trees.
I started growing my lemon grass from cuttings I got at the supermarket. I forgot one on the counter and was surprised to see it growing right there, just like my ionions, garlic, and ginger. Whoa!
Mark, you are my absolute favourite English speaker gardener so far! Great content combined with good sence of humour. Well done! Greetings from Hungary!
I wish, I could smell it... But will have to go with memory...This is one of the plants my mom taught my sisters and I to harvest when we were little in Panama...She would make us tea...Just love it. Such a fragrant plant and lovely to have around and grow. :))
Mark- I mean Marcus, you are really on the UA-cam grind, pumping out content as fresh as your garden. The intro was awesome, I'm a movie buff but somehow Gladiator has slipped under my radar, but you've inspired me to watch it. I want to congratulate you on the amazing success of your last video, only in my dreams do I achieve that level of UA-cam success. The Gladiator reference near the middle of the video was pretty witty too, I have a real appreciation for puns and analogies. The mosquito slaps really gave me a laugh... keep doing those and I might have to do a "Every mosquito slap from Self Sufficient Me" LOL. I have such a small garden that I'd rather grow other crops like tomatoes and peppers than lemon grass. But when I get my own 100 acre farm someday you bet I'll grow some. Outstanding video as always, keep it up mate :)
Thanks Lucas-us lol... Yeah, I'm pretty wrapped about the scraps video taking off! The truth is you never quite know if or when a video will go crazy and get picked up by the YT algorithm but what I do know is you have to be grinding out the content to give yourself the best chance. Likewise, I also enjoy your vids for the same reasons and I think to add a little fun into gardening content (which can be quite a dry subject sometimes) helps keep people interested. You keep it going too mate, cheers :)
I am Vietnamese and eat love to cook, marinate and smell the lemongrass. I got some roots in the glass but kitten love to take it out and destroy it. Thanks for the tips Gladiator !

Awesome job on the video! My wife wants lemongrass in the garden. We couldn't find any at the local hardware stores, but she picked up some in the herb section of the grocery store. I cut some off the top and have them sitting in water. Hopefully we will get some roots and I can plant them. I've been watching your videos for over a year I really like them thank you for sharing your garden!

Love this! And the roos, adorable. Have you ever thought about planting lemongrass around your duck pond or in areas that get soggy in winter? Seems like it might do well there with all the water.
Have grown lemon grass very successfully in Durban, South Africa. Leaves are cut into pieces, dried and added to tea for added flavor - mostly in winter for the added warmth. Your video was very informative. Keep up the good work. N

Thank you for the useful info. My family love lemongrass. We put it in Asian dishes; even making some hot or cold drinks as it has an aroma scent, it makes me feel relaxed every time I consume it. I have been planting lemongrass from seeds every year for 3 years in containers. I would say it grow massively quite easily with the right time and temperatures.
i love the smell of it on top of rice
Thank you.
Thank you for this video. I am now repotting my lemon grass and looking on ways to plant them and here I am gladiator. Again thank you.
Love the kangaroos behind the fence. Great informative video mate!
Glad you liked that footage. The roos came up the easement as I was filming so I just had take some video of the mum and her joey. Cheers :)
....Do the Roo’s eat lemon grass?
I know I always thought they where extinct like zebras and unicorns.
@@LongJohnHugeDong You're joking right?
I'm also have many plants of lemon grass because as a healer for free for the sickness with our blood, it's one of the main ingredient for curing high BP up to stroke.
I'm happy that we've managed to propagate 1 lemongrass into probably 100 heads now.. XD It's really one of the greatest achievements in gardening in my oppinion. The same with our sweet basils, started from 1, and is now 100's. both plants never seeded.
How do you propagate your basil?
You might be interested to know I grew it on the Central Coast of NSW with no problem...the spot did have good drainage, as you advocate. I am also growing it here in Sydney in a sunny, flat spot this time, but with free-draining soil. I didn't know to cut it back in winter, so now I will; makes total sense. Excellent tips; thanks.
Love these videos. The comedy-style mosquito forehead-slap made me burst out laughing in work. Learning tonnes from you mate, thanks.
Pop the leaves into your tea and it has the same effect as the stalk! We chop it up into bits so it fits better
I have learned more in watching your vids than my Dad and I have learned together by trial...Thanks so much for doing what you do & teaching newbies like me (I won't tell my Daddy he was misinformed)..please continue to post new vids 😊
G’day Marcus. I am growing my own lemon grass. So happy it is growing beautifully. Even mint, rosemary, etc.
I love lemongrass tea 😅 that intro though, love!
Whoa!
This video was extremely helpful. I have 10 large lemongrass plants in my backyard and will start dividing! Thank you!
I planted 4 bunches of lemongrass last spring by my front door and didn’t have one mosquito around all summer!! Same thing this year!!
Love it when Russell Crowe tells us how to grow a Ton of Veges.
I had no idea the roots are so easy to get out. Now I can share rooted plants with friends 🎉🎉🎉 easily
I could listen to you all day! 😊👍🏼🌴
Thanks Carrie! :)
You are hilarious. You make this vid enjoyable to watch. Great info here. thank you. Can't wait to grow mine.
You could grow it in a contaner
I love roast chicken stuffed with lemon grass, crushed garlic and onions....and smothered with butter, salt and pepper! ♥️♥️♥️
Awesome information!
“What we do in life goes eternity” well said!!

I use lemongrass essential oil in making my natural cold process soaps. The smell is so strong. I love it. Once you plant it does it spread?
Yes

😱😍 kangaroos!!! 2:01
I feel like moving to Australia! And that massive garden...wow ❤❤
Hi Elsa! I never grow tired of seeing kangaroos around here - they are so cute and majestic as they bound by. Cheers :)
@@Selfsufficientme You are privileged! All the best Mark & team!
Elsa Franca Id love to go there to enjoy all the parrots. The ones I own (cockatoo, parakeet, Lorikeet) all originate from there I’m told. Fascinating
I'm from Austria and we got shirts with Kangaroos and the inscription _not in Austria_ as Americans seem to have pretty bad geography classes... What annoys me even more is that every time I type Austria, my spellchecker _corrects_ it to Australia...
@@edi9892 Geography problem or spelling mistake? Move out here to South Africa (you're very welcome) then you'll get (some) Americans asking "Where's South Africa"? 🤣
I will definitely try to grow in a pot.
Thanks for the video.
As a newbie gardener, your videos are super informative! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! :)
Thanks Amber! :)
Wow so beautiful. I love to plant my lemongrass in our garden. I bought it from the shop and I soak it in the water put in a glass and now it's lots of roits and ready to transfer in the ground
Lol that intro.. I actually wanted to grow lemon grass so ty for this
Ok cool, thank you :)
You should, makes food taste alot better especially if you're stir frying.
That is why I subbed, hilarious :)
Yes me, too been looking at seeds, but maybe I will buy a bunch from the shops and try that first. I wonder if it would grow in Wales UK, but I am gonna try it.
@@yanglers6219 we used it in cooking food like Tinola blue Marlin with tomatoe and onions oh so suave da soup ah add a piece of ginger deliciouso😋😋😋da aroma is good
you inspired me to love gardening, now I can't be separated with my garden.
Thank you for the info about the lemon grass, I just cleaned my garden yesterday and got lots big stem of my lemon grass,,and have to re plant some ...I always watched your link, learned many things about gardening....
“Pests and disease”
*zooms in on kangaroos*
Coronavirus intensifies!
I have to keep it outside the house because cats just can't leave it alone.
kangaroos are pests!
@@skinnylegend-7330 they were there before you were - YOU'RE the pest! (actually we're all dangerous invasive pests to the planet, aren't we?)
Haha... When I saw that and before I heard him, I told myself... Wow, my lemongrass is going to do so well in kangaroo-free California 😅🤣
Yes! Lemongrass is very good For health! 👍
It's very nice plant but not known in Kenya I have planted it though. Thanks
I have grown in pot which is in very healthy condition and I agree to tips told by you in this video.you present it in
Lovely, useful,practical and effective style
Thanks for sharing
I just plan lemongrass in a pot , do you have to water it when you move the plant inside in winter?
me and youtube need to have a meeting regarding this recommendation.. but im still happy they did..
Awesome! I never knew the reason for trimming the plant was to reduce water loss!

Dhirajlal Bhikha Is South Africa all poor and everyone starving with no clean water as we here in America have been made to believe? I met a friend at school from Nigeria, she said it’s beautiful and she would love to move back, and NOT at all as portrayed in the media. Which we know delivers very little truth.Hope you respond.
Awesome video, super valuable tips on Lemongrass! I've been trying to grow it from seeds in the moist & not so warm Ireland... with not much success. There's some tiny baby ones popping up. But soon enough running out of season (we don't even seem to have a summer this year). So now I know how to grow them. Will try to grow them in container too.
Hail Maximus Marcus Lemongrassius! 😄 Blessings on your way 🌟
I'm glad you had that Tip 2, so people where I live don't imagine that it'll grow the same in cold places.
Nice
Bro your the best I’m hooked on your channel I live in N.C. USA , first time home owner trying to make edible sustainable landscape for my daughter. You’re so much help!

Perfect timing Mark. I'm about to source some from a friend to plant a border garden. Cheers!
Great stuff! All the best with your garden creation. Cheers :)
Like the way you speak. You are a motivator and a true leader.
Yes you do look like Russel Crowe. I had that in my mind to type many times.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣would you like the number of your nearest optometrist?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for your tips on growing lemongrass, I have just planted my very first lemongrass , I am very excited and nervous about growing it where I live. But what the heck you never know until you try! Thanks again have a great day!🤗
To avoid mosquito, there's a different type of lemon grass which is more fragrant
I like the pretty wooded environment you live in and how happily your lemon grass is growing out there.
Thank you for the tips.
For those who disliked this video, “ARe you not Entertained?”....
Uh....they might be the mosquitoes or kangaroos that disliked the video 😁
who cares about the dickheads that didn't like this video. They are the ones missing out. have no idea what's going on and should be put in the nut house LMAO
Maybe I need to hammer my thumb to get a green thumb like you 😂😂😂
What is the cost for one tonne lemon grass will it grow at all climates
Did people just not get the joke?
