- Soul Eater is a deep anime. It's a halloween-esq anime. It's also a dumb anime. There's a lot going on beneath the surface if you're willing to look for it, and that's what makes Soul Eater great. It's fun to watch, with the more serious themes lying just under the surface.

Soul Eater is one of the most anime anime out there. It's got tons of the cliche's, everything from mechs to a magical school, but the show itself isn't generic at all. It's an excellent story revolving primarily around three teams of two as they progress through a world maintained by Lord Death, the ruler of the DWMA. But what starts of as funny and fun has a lot of side characters that can truly be delved into on a different level.

You know I dunno if you read Fire Force at all (It's VERY mixed) but the last few chapters have had an interesting development or two. "Did the moon always look like that!?"
I wish more people would talk about soul, he’s an amazing character who covers his desire to seem cool because of the fear that no one will like him. Because of the constant praise his older brother Wes, who was a violin prodigy, received. He was only known as wes’s brother but through maka he felt deserved and wanted to step up and help her in times of need. Idk he’s just a great character

All of the MCs in Soul Eater are really well done. I resonate (heh) a lot with Kidd and his tisms as a person who also needs it's world to follow a specific pattern.
To me, Soul Eater feels like a fusion of Full Metal Alchemist/ Bleach + Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy for extra flavor with a great intro!Perfect for Halloween!🎃

@@viraltang Not really, it's like the God and Lucifer scenario but with the context of Soul Eater's world. Shinigami, the God of order, had a son who, due to his own failings, couldn't live in the confort of those rules, thus falling and becoming a demon. Makes sense to me at least

Crona's gender has been under debate since the manga was released, however I think that there's a reason why they present more androdgynous. Medusa didn't raise Crona to be a person, she raised them to be an object, a powerful and destructive weapon. Crona wasn't raised to have much of an identity at all, not even a gender identity. Medusa felt no need to raise them as such, because in her eyes, they're an "it", not a "she" or "he"

Very excellent explanation! I like this compared to the whole "It's a boy! No, it's they/them!" Crona couldn't even own his own gender due to Medusa's abuse. That's the point as well.
@Emmi the Cat Frog I love them so much! I'm rewatching it and I just noticed that when Medusa is telling Stein and Spirit that Crona has no use to her anymore, I noticed she actually does refer to Crona as "it" in the english dub. The attention to detail is incredible.

Crona's Story in the manga is far worse than what was presented in the anime. However, both anime & Manga have made Me hate medusa but not as much as certain character from Chainsaw Man

This was like among the first anime I ever watched. Always loved it’s Doom-and-Gloom-but-also-Goofy-and-Surrealist atmosphere. I always found it’s lore to be really cool but also not too complex and unnecesarily grand. It also made me realize at 12 that I was developing depression.

I actually don't recommend Soul Eater to people new to anime. It has such strong aesthetics and styles that I feel like it could put people off, might be hard to get into, and i want people to really enjoy it as it's definitely one of my favorites.
Also, the manga goes in a very different direction from the anime, and I highly recommend reading it, especially if you like the characters and relationships which are really delved into in an arc that is left out of the anime

I did like how the manga was less censored. The anime was 14+ but the manga 16+ but that might just be because manga and TV shows use a different set of ratings.
Whenever I’ve asked some people about their favorite soul eater character they pick Kid as there’s but my favorite character has to be Corona bc of his Story and character development, he was just a great character

I remember watching this and ended up having a soft spot for Crona, but they all have their own struggles.
I really appreciate you bringing up the theme of balance since that's a large part not only of the main story, but for kid and blackstar who are essentially secondary main characters (with kid's whole deal being balance, which is expanded upon more in the manga if I'm not mistaken, and blackstar being faced with the choice between the warrior and demon path but ultimately forging his own, and thus finding his own balance)
Good vid, I love Soul Eater so much. Just a heads up tho, Crona doesn’t have a canonical gender, and was actually misgendered in the American releases because the localization team didn’t have the knowledge of gender neutral pronouns at the time and didn’t want to refer to them as “it.”
The author has always been really ahead of his time with representation and I think it’s really neat.
I mean even if Crona's nonbinary in terms of gender (which I can believe) you can still have a secondary pronoun to be referred to. So realistically speaking he/they would still fall in line with the gendering in the video.
Just like how Neferupitou was referred to as a girl in the anime and ambiguous in the manga, the same happened to Crona here

@@Sappysappster I mean yeah plenty of nonbinary folks use multiple pronouns, but in situations with fictional characters I usually stick with the author's intent. And considering the only non-gender neutral pronouns used for them is from a not wholly accurate localization, I'm just gunna stick with they/them personally.
You can refer to Crona as he, she or they. This has been talked about so many times. I wish people would stop bringing up Crona's gender every time Soul Eater is mentioned.
They’re retranslating the manga in these new “perfect editions” and Crona goes by they them in the new translation
Well, excellent deep dive into "Soul Eater." However I wish you guys would take a look at the Manga (Or maybe I wish they would revisit the anime?) since it is a "Hellsing" vs "Hellsing Ultimate" type situation in which the Manga is infinitely better. They caught up to the manga and had to do their own "original" ending with the Maka Punch bullshit. That manga was much more complex with intersecting story lines with the B team you briefly see in the anime not to mention Soul becoming a realized weapon. I almost did a hard pass on this series due to the art style which I found garish and off putting. However the premise and story drew me in. I was disappointed in how the series ended, particularly given the directions the manga went.
@Emmi the Cat Frog Hellsing (Ultimate) is one of my all time favorites. I wonder if they will do "Drifters" which is by the same author. It's not done yet with only one "season" completed but it's soo cool.
@Emmi the Cat Frog Seras Victoria! She was fascinating to me in the first OVA series and I was so disappointed to see that character development go no where. So, in Hellsing Ultimate I got to see all that character potential realized in the scene where she drunk the Geese leaders blood and scrape Zorin Bliss head down to the nub like sand paper. I also liked her dynamic with Integra.
@Emmi the Cat Frog I can't fault your choices ;-). Alucard was a given and Integra was a hard as nails baddass. In terms of the Rip Van Winkle Scene I don't have much to say. Just about all of Alucards kill scenes were cool to me. I really like this channel. It gives me an opportunity to talk with some cool Anime lovers :-). I really wish they would get to Ranma though.

About time someone covers one of my top 5 favorites of all time. Not just because of the anime itself; but needing this lesson when i was at my absolute lowest in the midst of my depression. It’s amazing how one thing or person can make you feel like it isn’t all for naught.

One of the most underrated shows/manga, definitely deserves a reboot like FMA and considering Bones did that too, c'mon give us a Soul Eater Reboot Bones! Call it Soul Eater Resonance or something I Dunno just give me a Soul Eater Reboot!

The anime ended before the manga was able to flesh out its ending so the show runners had to put the pieces they had together. They did what they could but the progression seen in the manga is much more satisfying imo. I LOVE the anime though it was my first anime and I’ve seen it half a dozen times through so do not let this be a point against the anime.
The Crona episode made me cry. It's my favorite moment in the series and it was so amazing and emotional, and than the ed came and it was a new version of it with little Maka and Crona and it's the cutest thing and I lost it
Great video again, I recently started watching Soul Eater and I'm so happy to see it covered as I'm already loving the show! It was beautifully put to say that fear implies bravery. Always be brave, and don't let your fears control you is a great message to send

I watched it and I agree. Theres other points you could have went on: black star struggling to be who he wants to be. Hence why is constantly gloating. Death the Kids OCD being his drive to keep order in the world. Maka and spirits relationship in general. Those were some examples.
With it being Halloween though, crona and asura are the perfect choice for the video. Thank you for your insight and as always, turning it into a morality discussion. Love you guys and can't wait for next months topics. c:
Nowadays I can't think of Soul eater's anime without doing a sad little cringe. The manga was SO. MUCH. BETTER! And we are yet to see it adapted aithfuly, Brotherhood-style (and with Fire Force bringing ookubo back to the surface, maybe it will happen in the future...)

@@shawnjavery Pretty much everything the anime skipped. The battles at Arachnophobia, Maka taking on the black blood to face a pure insanity Arachne, Crona's development with Medusa, Justin Law and Stein's own turns with insanity, Soul becoming a death scythe, Maka, Kid and Black Star's development, the entire Book of Eibon arc, the battle on the Moon and the climax of the battle was just sublime. Plus Ookubo's art style sometimes takes on a more abstract/surrealistic style and it fits great the theme discussed on the page.
@@MrKlausbaudelaire The arachnophobia battles are good, I'll admit its a nice arc, but there's a lot of lazy and just bad writing. Remember, Crona forgets Maka after that arc just because its convenient to the story. It just felt more generic to me as the story went on. Like what the hell was even the point of the Book of Eibon arc in the larger story?
@@shawnjavery Crona "forgot" about Maka because, I don't know, her mother is an expert in BRAINWASHING and Crona also have a maniac living inside her bloodstream pushing her self-esteem lower and lower every second? And the Book of Eibon arc was a rescue mission and a really fun experience on the character's own development.
@@MrKlausbaudelaire Its not that it doesn't make sense in the story, her forgetting maka is a little specific but its not out of the realm of possibility. What annoys me about it is how its an incredible transparent way to reset Crona's character arc so that she will be the final villain, instead of her joining the good guys fully. Its something that wouldn't be a deal breaker if the final battle didn't rely on their character relationship to work.
As for the Eibon arc, the character development felt forced. The "justice can be a sin" isn't a result of any character's agency, Kid ends up going insane because of madness and starts sprouting BS that was never part of his character before and then Black Star just knocks some sense into him, and goes "I'll use my power to support you Bro" and the arc ends with Kid having that realization.
In general, the characters in the manga had clear end points to their arcs but it always felt like a reach to get there, since it never felt like the characters had earned their development. At least in my opinion. While the anime didn't have large arcs for everyone but what did happen feel in character, like ofc Kid would start to doubt his father when he saw evidence of his connection with Eibon, there's not any leaps in logic from one step to the next for his character arc.
That segment on fear vs bravery hit me deeper than I thought it would. This is why Bonsai Pop is GOATed stuff. Can't wait for Shonember!!
I remember how much I loved this show. It always had a good laugh thrown in it, with a great story to keep it from just another Shonen Comedy. And now I need to rewatch it.

This is the only video on Soul Eater I've seen that finds Corona as interesting as I do. This channel in general is so about appreciating so many series it is so refreshing and just nice to find the good things about all these shows, films, and manga that touched so many people. Also the final episode of this show was the first I saw so I don't seem to have that dislike most have, still in curious how the Manga ended. Great Video.

Soul Eater gave me a lot in my childhood and also now. Not only was it a companion I could count on in more darker times but also an entrance into the world of manga and different kinds of animation. The art Atsushi Ohkubo made with this piece will allways be dear to me, his characterdesign is the best. I cant seem to love fire force, his ongoing series, as much as soul eater, but its still absolutely great. When I started to write and draw stuff on my own he was allways the role model I looked at for help.

The best parts of the manga that didn’t make it into the anime are def the Eibon’s Book arc and just the character design for 3 arm Crona
I swear, this anime pulled me out of the darkest times, and became my most fav. anime. But it bothers me that there are people who didn't get it. You understanding the series honestly makes me smile. :)

I can't say I remember the anime too well, but you definitely have a higher regard for it than I remember of it, especially the ending. I felt like the ending was unearned, anticlimactic, and overly cheesy the way the power of hope and bravery defeated an enemy who was really just misunderstood and confused but also otherwise unstoppable.
I always feel so pretentious saying it, but I do think the manga was better and that it earned it's ending the way it was done.
But both the main and supporting characters are all tremendous and memorable. This show doesn't seem to get it's due so good to see a video on it
After reading the manga I can easily see how much under pressure the anime team was to end the anime and wrap things up especially since the manga lasts a lot longer than the anime so there was a lot of things to be wrapped up,they did a pretty job at it except for the last episode unfortunately, no matter how I look at the punch ending is bad.

Hey guys, that was a great video. It was solid philosophically but also plain spoken enough that a lot of people can understand what you all were talking about. I’ve been really wrestling with the inner conflict between security (order, imagination, hope) and insecurity (disorder, fear, anxiety, etc.) in my own love life and professional life these past two weeks so it was kind of nice to hear a message that summed it in all up pretty well in the context of an analysis of soul eater (which I unfortunately haven’t finished). The message of courage was also well-received. I try to practice courage or bravery in my day to day life whenever possible and although it is very hard to do so at times (my body literally squirms and I can feel all my inner defenses telling me not to do the hard thing), I generally feel pretty good about myself after having conquered a fear or a worry. It’s not possible to control the external situation to which courage corresponds, and sometimes desirable outcomes elude us (as in my love life atm lol) b/c either we’re still somewhat caught in fear, isolation, loneliness, irrationality, etc. or because the other person is, but being authentic, daring to be ourselves in a world that’s in some way or another told us we’re not worthy, is a way of exercising agency, of acting freely, when people or circumstances would seek to dominate us.
Soul Eater was probably my first anime (outside of kids shows and ATLA) I ever watched and it still holds a special place in my heart after a decade. I'm so thankful for this video cuz it reminds me of why I fell in love with the series to begin with!

1. Soul Eater
I love soul eater so much because that was the first time I saw a perfect blend of action, comedy, and drama in anime. The characters are amazing, no anime/manga world is like SE, I have a thing for battle systems that uses bounds/souls as attacks. Even more so when you get to communicate with each other in and out of battle. And how could you not bump the OST!? LOTUS JUICE IS MY FAVORITE RAPPER! XD Some anime on my list has changed over the years, but so far nothing has hit as hard as SE for me. Yeah, it does have some anime tropes, but I feel like Soul Eater is unique out of all the shounen I've seen so far. I do find fire force more mature than SE in a sense though. Speaking of, if FF keeps doing well as an anime, I really hope SE gets a continuation of the anime from the manga or remake like FMAB and the other stuff coming out next year. Bleach is getting its final arc, shaman king is getting a remake, inuyasha got boruto-ed, fruits baskets got a remake, Hetalia just announced a remake. COME ON NOW SOUL EATER! I'M WAITING! XD
I would have liked to seen your perspective on the manga, characters struggling with their own madness is even more a recurring theme and handled very interestingly. Especially with Kid and black star. As well as cronas unexpected changes that would catch the anime only watchers off guard.
