- The Xbox News Today is overwhelmingly negative as the studio closure fallout is felt across the industry. Especially in the case of Tango Gameworks as they had the supposed hit Hi-Fi Rush which leadership said met expectations. This has left a lot of eyes on Hellblade 2 which has received little or no marketing and will be released on May 21st as a digital-only title.
Separately all eyes are on Phil Spencer and his history of leadership at Xbox. With Xbox fan sentiment at an all-time low and Xbox continuing to struggle fans' faith is shaken.

I still love my series X that I got almost 3 years ago. But yesterday’s news has made me questions whether I should continue to support Xbox or not.
Long time ago. Still got my series s, but everything xbox does is questionable at least. The layoffs just make the situation even worse.
Devs must do their job. Redfall was a shitty game from Devs of Dishonored. Release it, or cancel it? Big boss said release it.... If they worked The title years already... Why cancel it.... What devs did in Arcane Austin past 5 years??? Developed a vampire game they never wanted to release???? Wasting money, talent??? What should new owner do, shut down the studio or try to make some money with "Redfall". Owner tried, devs quitted.
Concede. Xbox is finished. Your defense towards Xbox and downplaying their decisions make zero sense.

Messed up how? They shut underperforming studios that’s life move on. Sony does the exact same thing so did Embracer Group. They all do. People always whinge and complain but the reality is they don’t buy the games in the first place.

@@DEVILTAZ35 Microsoft repeatedly lied - in fact they explicitly were saying the opposite about Hi-Fi Rush and that they were very happy with it's performance. All the more strange was that Microsoft themselves were saying how much they wanted to work with Japanese studios only to drop the only one they had.
Furthermore, that's in addition to the fact that Phil Spencer and Xbox were trying to cultivate some kind of "good guy in the industry" image for a long time now. That of course, is yet more lies.
Plus, how long have they been promising the year of great games that Phil's been talking about for 10 years, only for it to never materialize. So they're going to make games by closing studios now? That's not how it works. Is Xbox going to be reduced to just COD and Bethesda games and bad Halos? Of course they messed up.

Some of Microsoft’s acquisitions have been questionable like Compulsion Games who have only made mediocre games and was not worth buying.
Well, let's get something straight here. Phil should be held accountable for the lack of successful software with all of the studios MS currently has under its umbrella. As for the job losses and studio closures? That decision is above him and I'd bet my hat that Satya Nadella is responsible for all that has happened with respect to job cuts and closures, 100%. People need to stop blaming Phil for everything because he isn't responsible for it all.
I guess going forward every game Xbox releases should be considered a failure no matter how good it is.

@@usedfuzzbox Games take 5-6 years to develop. Even Hi-Fi Rush, which is considered AA or a "smaller title," took about 5 years. It was being developed before the acquisition. Same with GWT and Deathloop; Sony bought timed exclusivity and it was honored. That's why it appears that the output is lower than expected.

Hellblade is the type of game you subscribe for a short amount to play then move on. It is absolutely not gonna move any needles for gamepass so I'm worried about them.

How was hifi rush supposed to sell lots with no physical release same goes with hellblade 2 I want to own both games but I only buy physical. I still know alot of people who still buy physical.

Close 343 not devs who have better potential, Arcane Austin who made the phenomenal Prey wanted to cancel Redfall but where forced to continue to develop it and Tango Gameworks made great games and is a Japanese studio which they didn’t have before.

Then, in the email, they say they are closing and merging to focus on the "big games." It sounds a lot like Activision and the Call of Duty situation, and that sounds stifling and toxic
I’ve been a diehard Xbox gamer since 02 after Sega went under. The series x will be the last Xbox I buy. There’s no reason for me to stay with Xbox anymore as my favorite IPs are either dormant or mismanaged (Fable, Halo).

@@prezzeruk4054 not gonna lie boys I have been playing grounded, hi Fi rush and pentiment on my PS5 and although these games are inherently flawed and have the Xbox stink to critical game design elements that are an absolute blast to play. I am addicted to grounded at the moment, I hope all the games come to PS5 not just halo.
I lost faith and excitement towards Xbox when they announced the 4 games going to PS. I just felt like I got slapped in the face with that and my “loyalty” towards the brand was for nothing. Now they close Tango the only Bethesda studio which has delivered a great game under the MS umbrella and they close the studio instead of investing more money and resources to nurture that talent so they can continue making bigger and better games. Not to mention it was Xbox’s only Japanese studio. A market they so desperately need to break into. Smh

I agree with you on this! I have heard that there is a leak that says Hellblade 2 is about 8 hours long total! I haven't seen anything about Hellblade 2 at all! I am stoked for Clockwork Revolution & if it gets pulled, I will be pissed! I have an XSX & Gamepass Ultimate! I am going to let my XSX die then go Gamepass Ultimate on PC because I have access to everything I own there! I believe Microsoft/Xbox is going to slim everything down & only focus on Bethesda stuff! They want Fallout 5 & Elder Scrolls 6 out as fast as possible! I no longer have faith in Avowed or Fable being great games either! I no longer trust Phil or anything that is said about this, if anything! I have said it before that Microsoft /Xbox is going to be a streaming service for games several years from now with no consoles & no longer making games!

What does this have to do with the acquisition? You really think Todd Howard wouldn't have done this? Let's recap. The whole original Arkane team quit under Todd because they were forced to make Redfall. Tango CEO left and poached his talent. What's left of Arkane and Roundhouse are mostly being reassigned to other games at Zenimax. There was no saving Tango after the CEO poached everyone and Alpha Dog, I mean did Mighty Doom make enough to keep the lights on?
Xbox lacks the install base to make enough sales to ensure that its own studios remain viable. Gamepass has also canabilised game sales as well making the situation worse.

I’ve supported Xbox for 20 years, including Phil Spencer from day one of his promotion. That support ended yesterday. I’m not renewing gamepass, I’m not buying any more Xbox games, and I’m completely out on the platform. My next system will be a PC and I’ll buy games through steam. There is no walking back, no explanation, no confusion, no justification for this blatant corporate greed. Phil Spencer needs to resign, this is an absolute disgrace.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the messaging - you can't publicly state for years what your metrics for success are, or if they're vague that you're really happy with them and then shut the studios down. Or seemingly give games sales targets in the Game Pass era. It's like Microsoft is schisophrenic. They can spend $70bil on ActiBlizz, but at the same time spend less than pennies on marketing their titles, on marketing Game Pass. Clearly they have enough studios to make games, why not start supporting them???
I see that Matt Booty got one of the studio names wrong in his mass firing email. I guess browsing the color options for next year's Porsche can be distracting when you're just shooting off the email that's earning you the bonus to buy next year's Porsche. All they're going to care about are live service pay pig games. They're going to straight up design raw monetization systems they can slap graphics on and call them games.
I don't know how Matt Booty's still working for xbox, let alone working in one of the top positions at the company. I can't even tell you a single thing dude's done for the company

Xbox/Microsoft is not buying studios for talent. They are buying established IPs to gain market share and sell game pass subscriptions. Unfortunately these “lower” tiered studios were seen as expendable and were the first to get cut.
Microsoft CEO: SATYA NADELLA & Microsoft Board have obviously seized control of Xbox since ABK deal and Phil is following their orders as they are his boss!

• Complete loss in Europe

why no one is talking about the possibility that Shinji Mikami leaving Tango Gameworks is the catlyst for closing the studio? maybe Tango Gameworks has nothing to back having its doors being kept open once Shinji left the studio and thus MS saw that it could benefit from this money else where

at the end of the day MS is a profitable company and negligence plus being a free loader is something should be removed and terminated whether it is coming from your highest earning employee or your lowest
i know it is sad to being laid off and i personally can connect with this as i lost my job few years ago but coming from the position of managment it is no easy task to balance between all aspects of keeping employees or laying them off

Another big problem that people don’t seem to realize, is the economic side of things. The shift in compensation and work hours, while great for workers in the industry, is causing a cash flow issue. Unless a game is an absolute cash cow, downsizing is inevitable.
I think the problem is not Phill Spencer, but Satya Nadella. Since the acquisition of ABK, Satya is running the show from his desk, not letting Phill work the way he wanted for the brand. And what's truly baffling me is the fact there's zero marketing for Hellblade 2...is Ninja Theory their next target?! I honestly hope not, of course. And yet they kept 343 Industries after its attempts of ruining Halo's franchise. As a Xbox fan, i truly disappointed with what's going on with Microsoft😡

I'd forgotten about Hellblade 2 TBH, MS has done ZERO marketing on it. Feels like they've thrown in the towel.

Overall, I really don't think the morale of the xbox community is low right now. Realistically, a very small, vocal percentage of people are aware, tweeting, and making videos of these things. However, the average game consumer doesn't follow gaming news such as this. It is unfortunate that things have gone in this direction though. My thought is Xbox is no longer trying to compete with PS. In my opinion, they're positioning themselves to take a different path of appeal to gamers similar to how Nintendo does their own thing.
Yeah how do you or we determine if a game is a success with the GP model. With games that rely on sales you look at sold copies or active players in Helldivers 2 case. On GP a lot of those metrics are hidden which is why its a shocker a game like HiFi Rush wasn't really profitable even though where we do have some metrics on Steam it did sell and review very well.
They will eventually make a statement about this, and for their sake, they should say something genuine and avoid the corporate double talk bullshit.

Great vid... As someone who has also just lost my job... they decided to move our whole division from UK to a cheaper location (Malaysia). So I can appreciate and my heart goes out to what those people at those studios are going through.
The sad truth is Xbox management has failed to fight for those people... I bet Phil and the upper management director team didn't even contemplate to take a $1 salary this year to give these people more of a chance to make something new. Instead they have again and again lied (perhaps unintentionally) about what constitutes success and their vision and have therefore rightly ruined all brand trust.
For me as an Xbox, Switch and PC gamer...I am personally backing away from the xbox eco-system...putting my spending towards indie and smaller games. But I do think this is a wider industry issue, and the bean counters at Microsoft main, have read the tea-leaves and forced the change of focus at xbox. My take-aways are:
- Game-pass as it stands is unsustainable. First day releases of big AAA titles just doesn't work.
- Triple AAA games take too long to make, cost too much to make valid returns. Industry needs to pivot to smaller games, lowering the graphical bar and scope of games. Share out the risk of output. Nintendo's model of less concern on graphics and focus on game-play seems to work.
- Xbox have completely screwed their brand and trust. Why would anyone of any talent remain at their studios or give it their all.
- And why would us gamers have confidence in the Xbox brand moving forward with such a pivot.
Im mad at Microsoft too, but I feel like people cancelling their GP subscriptions are only gonna hurt more Devs, so I'm keeping mine to support them. Will also buy games when I can afford them.
EDIT: Indie developers have said numerous times that GP has saved them/made them successful. Many people buy games as they leave GP, so that's the benefit of GP games only being temporary. I can understand how paying full price for bigger budget AAA games is a good idea however
You're not supporting the devs with gamepass, you're putting their faith in Microsoft hands. Buy the games. Everyone should buy hellblade 2 outright, that's how you support the devs

Destin, we've been warning you about the problems at Xbox for years, but you continue to ignore them but u continued to tell people they have good things coming up. This generation has been a complete failure. And they've may blunder after blunder. It's time to acknowledge it and let people know they should stop supporting a company that doesn't care about them, or they're phone employees. Gamepass was a Flood approach in is killing any game sales. They could ever make, which leads to studios being shut down

It is sad to hear of Tango and Arkane Austin closing... but I'm curious if it's a lack of production issue. Like Arkane dragging their feet on fixing Redfall maybe. Or Tango lacking direction on their next project. Like being that XGS is now so wide spread maybe they closed studios that weren't very deep in their next project. Maybe they weren't making good progress. And in turn they're redirecting resources towards more productive studios working on bigger IPs. Idk, It sucks but I'd like to believe there's a good reason. Maybe they're narrowing their focus to put out better games more often. Try to have a growth mindset when these things happen.
What's made it even worse is their own hypocrisy. Hi Fi is a shock hit and they close Tango. Meanwhile 343 has blown it with Halo REPEATEDLY. The Initiative has pissed around with Perfect Dark for 6 years and has nothing to show for it. Hell, Todd Howard and Co can't even put out a next gen update without breaking their games. Anyone seeing them getting shut down??

I feel that in this economy it's bad that people lost their jobs. I lost my job as a Samsung rep when the Note 7 had to be recalled because units were catching fire and they spent billions on those recalls. So I get it. But at the same time Phil Spencer did save xbox from being shut down during the xbox 1 era. I'm keeping the faith and sticking with Xbox. I hoping they can bring back the 360 era when you felt great about having an xbox.
These studios we loved are no longer the same. They have fired pretty much all the OG devs and brought in new ones and they have a totally different vision for the studio than what fans loved about those studios. They change the vision of the studio and ruin their legacy. Arkane is not the same arkane who made prey. The current devs wouldn't even think to make a game like prey. How amazing would Prey 2 be? But it wouldn't be the same cause it's all totally new devs making it. The ones who made all these games we love have been fired, let go or moved and created their own studios. So we have all new devs that don't respect what came before but think they can change and improve on these franchise but in reality they destroy them.

I totally agree with what you have said. Another thing is what happened with Tango? I mean didn’t Phil said they were trying to open doors in Japan and one of the first things you do is close the first studio you obtain from them? This hurts to say but if I were anyone over there I would never trust Xbox again. And I’m a long time fan but this is beyond messed up. Where’s the promise? Billions of dollars to obtain companies but nothing in PR? Games obtained on your own platform but nothing but one or two so games barely on gamepass where’s the push for satisfaction in order to keep jobs. Also what about the impact in loss jobs in Japan from this? It’s not a secret what happens to extra hard workers in Japan I just hope that anyone who has been affected by this is okay… I’m just shocked let’s see what’s next smh. Idk if I can continue to support Xbox. I’ve said this before if the white collar is responsible then I urge you to make plans for independence from MS asap… cause right now you guys look like The Sanctuary from The Walking Dead.

Like you said Destin, the problem is we don’t have any idea what the plan is for Xbox. We as customers and consumers of the Xbox brand need to know what is going on. Is Xbox keeping exclusive games? Are they going multiplatform?? I’m hearing rumors hellblade 2 might be coming to PlayStation. With how much they spent on getting great studios to booster their first party line up and to just obliterate that plan is ridiculous to me and pisses me off. Why should I buy the next Xbox if I know you’re games are gonna go on PlayStation and I can play your games their and still play amazing exclusives that PlayStation offers. I have a feeling that Phil Spencer is not the one to lead Xbox anymore. What is the plan Xbox? We deserve that much.

The founder of Tango left and he took a lot of the team with him. Hi fi rush didnt get them shut down. It was Tango not wanting to be a part of Microsoft games that got them closed most likely.

You have to ask yourself this question. Why have none of the studios Microsoft purchased released games in this generation? Hell why haven't most of Sony's 1st party studio released games this generation? Is it really down to "evil corporations" or could it possibly be down to a severe drop in productivity since the pandemic? Could it be a mixture of both? How long can any company keep paying giant staffs of people when their output has slowed down to a crawl? Making a game hasn't changed that much since last generation as far as complexity.

Mikami wasn't involved with Hifi. The studio would have continued without him.
I went with a Series X this gen because I was excited for Halo, I thought the PS5 looked crazy, and I thought MS was on the right track. I got my Halo and Hi Fi Rush… and that’s it.

Never played any of games from those studios but seem to ignore the fact of current times. Times are tough at the moment. Consumers are spending less or cutting back. Post COVID. We know in the tech space demand was high during COVID and in recent times there has been cuts in tech but also a lot of places.
