Alright, come down, guys, we have changed the title! It obviously wasn't meant to defame Portugal. We thought the title was humorous since Brazil DIDN'T EVEN EXIST back then. That means Portugal was stealing from Portugal, but that doesn't make any sense, right? Anyone who has been following us for more than 5 seconds would know that we have been doing more than 300 videos PRAISING everything-Portugal. This was just a light-hearted title with no bad intentions! UPDATE: We were just told that there's recently been a debate in the media between Brazil and Portugal about this topic, which of course is even more unfortunate. Again, we apologize, but understand that we didn't make it to offend the Portuguese people. Why would we willingly dig our own grave? Please also note that in the video, we don't say ANYTHING about Portugal stealing from Brazil, simply because we KNOW that wasn't the case. If we truly believed that Portugal stole from Brazil, we would have talked about it in the actual video. Hope to see you in the next video! :-)
And you know Portuguese are very VERY sensitive on this subject. I took it differently because I'm used to Dutch humour.... possibly somewhat similar to Danish humour.
We didn't know that Portuguese were very sensitive on this subject. In fact, we thought Portuguese were proud of their former empire and all the things they accomplished, which is why we put the title on edge.
sorry, but "steal" is a serious word, not a joke you should understand that no one likes their ancestors to be called thieves... so, at the very least it's an unfortunate choice of words.
I guess coming from the Vikings ourselves, we don’t really see any issue with word stealing. Ofc we would never had used that word if we thought it would come across as offensive or hurtful.
As a Brazilian viewer I can assure that the narrative "The Portuguese stole from Brazil" is deeply rooted here owing to a huge and consistent bashing campaign which has been in place since the coup that established republic over monarchy in 1889. It´s been systematically and conveniently used as an all-purpose excuse to blame colonial past for every single problem the country faces till these days. Moreover, the Portuguese element was and somehow is still defamed as a form to cut off the historical and emotional memory from Brazilians and prevent any chance of reestablishing monarchy. Brazilian Republic started from a lie, expelled the Brazilian Royal Family in one of the most shameful episodes of our history and keeps on being a fake propaganda engine. It´s not surprising that the Portuguese people get so outrageous about being called thieves. Well, nowadays it´s difficult to make content without generating discontentment at a certain level but you´d better be more cautious about certain jokes or dark humor since excessive polarization and politicization seem to be a plague spreading all the way. Hope people understand that you didn´t mean to do any harm and enjoy the content itself. Big hugs.
Fabio, what a great comment. I did put a comment on the pinned topic saying mostly that, that what triggers me is when some Brazilian people, specially politicians use the Portuguese legacy as a way to white wash the current state of affairs in Brazil. Of course Portugal as a colonizer did awful things, of course in our past we did things that seem terrible (and it was) using today's standards, but that's now how one should look at the past, the past is the past and it should not be judged using the present, nor should I be held responsible for what some Men did that lived 500 years prior to me in the same land I was born. I hope all the best to Brazil, just makes me sad that consistent bashing and the need to cut ties with the Portuguese past. We share the same language and have loads of cultural overlap, both our countries and people should be proud of our heritage even if one needs to recognize that the past is not all roses. It was even a Portuguese prince that loved Brazil so much that started the Independence process from his own country! What's not to love about that? And there is a statue of him in one of the main squares in Lisbon! :)
Thanks for your comment! And yes, you would definitely know coming from Brazil, so as we have said so many times here jn the commentary we realize we were trying to be entertaining on a topic that is very sore. We simply didn’t realize this was a thing. It seems crazy to still be fighting about stuff from an era so long ago, which is why we thought no one had a problem with the title. We were wrong!! 😳
Brazilians love to travel overseas, but because of the currency it's too expensive for us to travel overseas. The reason Brazil receives so few tourists is not only due to the bad publicity on the media, but also because Brazil is far away from Europe and the US, the transportation inside the country is quite complicated compared to Europe and very few ppl here speak English. The disadvantage is less money from the tourists. The advantage is tons of empty paradises.
We dont need also and want because our economy is not based in tourism, it is very mss when a country focus too much on that and in others most important and where the real money are. Tourism is very few money and too much chos!!
There for girls, there are a lot of people who travel here inside and outside, don't make it your reality that of a large part of the population or a good part of it!
There was no stealing, Brazil was Portuguese territory, its citizens were Portuguese. Since you are in Brazil and talking about gold, go see Brazil’s oldest churches, that’s where the majority of the gold can be found.
We know it wasn't stealing. This was more meant in a fun way as Brazil today is Brazil and Portugal is Portugal. It was simply to give the title a little spice. Nothing was meant to defame Portugal, obviously. I think we have made enough videos praising Portugal to not be seen in such negative light, no?
@@grandadan - If you read the comments, too many people misunderstood our intent with the title. It doesn't make sense to piss off people and that also wasn't our intent.
Brazil wasn't a Portuguese territory. Invading a place, exterminating millions of inhabitants and later calling the land yours, doesn't make it yours, no matter what most history books still say to this day. Let's start there. Also, it is important to clarify that ''its citizens were Portuguese'' is code for ''some white individuals in Brazil at the time, were citizens of Portugal''.
@@Ma-id1nl Yes, it was, the borders and infrastructures were created by them, with the help of the locals themselves, who allied with the settlers against the rival tribes - look at the Tupiniquim and the Tupinambá for instance. To say the Indians were all the same would be the equivalent of claiming Europeans were or are all the same. The members of one tribe regarded the members of the opposite ones as foreigners, a common thing in the history of every continent. There was no extermination in Brazil, that's an absurd claim mirrored from the likes of what happened in Peru and Mexico. In fact, the Portuguese Crown forbade such deeds from taking place. The gold that was found wasn't on necklaces, pieces of clothes or buildings, it was on the underground. By royal decree, during the reign of Dom Joam III, middle of the 16th century, everyone born in an overseas territory was, by law, as Portuguese as any other born in the capital itself, so quit the race-baiting, there was no such thing as a focus on white folk, I can show you countless examples of notable non-white figures to show you otherwise, including Portuguese negro knights.

We have portuguese heritage all over Brazil because they were our ancestors too, at least most of us, look at the center historical of Rio, the Colombo Coffee in the center, etc.but for sure Paraty is very well kept and many build here unfortunately was distroy because they tryed to dstroy our histry, etnicity!! By the way, look at the center of Florianópolis 😂😂🤭🤭
So cool! Paraty is on my bucket list and now after seeing this beautiful video, I will definitely go there when I visit Rio in May. How is your Portuguese going? Are you speaking it a lot in Brazil? I'd love to hear about that.
yes. besides, have in mind tha ouro preto was the largest city in the Americas during the 17th century. it's about beauty, history, religion. you can can admire ouro preto from different perspectives.
It was too bad you didn't get a chance to visit the marvelous islands in Paraty or the Trindade beach. You should definitely come back to explore some more of the beauties of this nice region. Lots of "saudades" from those colorful streets. All the best.
Hi guys! I'm from Rio and I loved all your videos showing Brazil and debunking the bad image of Brazil the media shows worldwide. About Paraty, for a long time parati was kind of a synonym for cachaça. About cachaça, as you might have noticed, there are white and brownish cachaças. The white is proper to prepare a caipirinha while the brownish get their color from the wooden vats where they are left aging (like whiskey) and are supposed to be consumed pure. Keep up the good work!
Congrats for the video. Pretty well done. Actually I have never visited Paraty. My wife knows it very well. I’ve promised her that this year I’ll spend a few days in Paraty.

Oh, oh... you guys are into Dark Humor!... :) I don't care anymore, but my friends in Brazil, and in our many chats we had while riding all across the county, every now and then, it appeared the "you guys stole our gold and gave nothin' in return" (like if paying taxes is something that only happened then and there, and no infrastructures were built there at that time), and then we were visiting Universities and lots of other cultural landmarks built during the time that Brazil was part of the Portuguese Empire, that are still the reference in current days. Also stories about how the portuguese exterminated the indigenous people (when the reality was that many married, made love, not war -- they were killing each other more than any battle with the portuguese). And worst, and mostly at the Nordeste (e.g., Olinda and Recife), is the praise for the Dutch and the slam of the portuguese heritage, saying that if the Dutch had won, Brazil would be even better than USA, whatever that means -- when in fact they only wanted to take control of the slavery trade from Africa. And nowadays other communities (Italians, Germans, etc.) do have an important role in that, namely at the south of the country, trying to put a negative connotation to portuguese ancestry. And finally, why all of this? Because that's the oficial narrative in Brazil, that children learn at school, ever since the Republic was established, blame the Monarchy and Portugal for all the bad things happening in Brazil, so that there wouldn't be any temptation to get back to a Monarchy (now 100% brazilian, not portuguese anymore) -- see this article (in Portuguese, sorry), www.publico.pt/2020/08/09/opiniao/noticia/brasil-ve-antilusitanismo-historico-sistema-ensino-1926791 or this book (from Brazil, eduCAPES): educapes.capes.gov.br/bitstream/capes/207142/2/Historia%20da%20educa%C3%A7%C3%A3o.pdf Paraty, Angras dos Reis, Ubatuba: beautiful, beautiful areas (even with a Nucleal Power Plant in the middle) -- been there for an entire week, and would love to return.

Very interesting. Such a beautiful place! Well if these houses were built for the slaves to to live in, then they were living in high class. We have in Europe millions living abandoned in the worst falling down old houses and being used as slaves as well; nothing compared to this high class! If you would put this images in one of your Portuguese videos and telling us that it was a town somewhere especially in the half south side of the country, i would believe it was true! By the way: This town is worth much more then all the gold mined. Congratulations once again.

About the number of tourists in Brazil and Portugal.. Actually I think its not so fair to compare Brazil and Portugal. Brazil is the country with the most tourists in South America, While Brazil is far away from the developed regions and a flight costs a lot; Portugal is in Europe, the region with most tourists in the world and its quite cheap to go by ryanair, easyjet, trains, etc. You can compare the numbers, sure, but there are lots of variables to considere not just the size of the country like you did, but I undestand that an european wouldn't think this way. Other than that, great video, awesome quality, it deserved to be on netflix and maybe if you contact them they'll accept it since Brazil has the second highest number of subscriptions on the platform.

“Stolen” or not, I (a Brazilian) am grateful that Portugal, along with Indians, Blacks and other nations, have participated in the construction of our country. They made a tasty mixed salad. If it weren't for Portugal and other peoples, we wouldn't exist here, I wouldn't exist.
The title was inappropriate because brazilians (not all, fortunately) are not polite to the portuguese people; they don't know how to separate the past from the present time. Portugal has an historic past that it is proud of. A small country with adventurous people that discovered so many places where no European had yet been, from Madeira to Japan (and Australia). In that past period the European maritime countries (Spain, France, England, Holland) were the sovereigns of the world. That time has passed, long ago. It is not possible to discuss what happened four centuries or more ago and blame the people of today.Only the no cult people have this idea. If they knew about history, they would realize that the gold that the Portuguese discovered in Brazil, much of it stayed in the churches that were built there. The Portuguese built and left hundreds of cities in the country, which even today give them wealth, thanks to their architectural beauty, which attract thousands of tourists. This fact, alone far exceeds the economic value of the gold found. At that time, all the discovering countries were looking for gold and precious stones. A lot of silver came out from Argentina (the name of the country means silver). The Portuguese people have an attitude of brotherhood towards the the other peoples. Just look at what is currently happening with so many foreign citizens living in Portugal, including many brazilians, who do not fit into the xenophobic group. Brazil could be a great nation if it had another mentality. PS. Brazilian people should look at the treatment given to the indigenous, who are disappearing. These are the real owners of the country.

you should understand that no one likes their ancestors to be called thieves...
so, at the very least it's an unfortunate choice of words.
great post.
Fábio 👏❤
Spot on, Fábio, congrats!
Amazing video! 😍Brazil is really wonderful 🇧🇷!
Great video as usual! There are so many common things with Portugal. That's what I felt when I was in Brazil. Keep going well
Thanks so much! :)
@@joenandamalie Did you change the title? Why? You shouldn't! LOL

Thanks guys for this amazing Brazil's series. Getting to know a nother side of Brazil is mind-blowing. I wish you much success.
If you liked Paraty, you really must go to Ouro Preto, the "jewel of the colonial crown", in Minas Gerais.

It was too bad you didn't get a chance to visit the marvelous islands in Paraty or the Trindade beach.
You should definitely come back to explore some more of the beauties of this nice region.

Did you notice that the properties all have a step to go in , it’s in order to avoid the water coming in during high tide.
I will have a trip in Brazil in August and this video convinced me to bring my family to Paraty.
Thank you!
Congrats for the video. Pretty well done. Actually I have never visited Paraty. My wife knows it very well. I’ve promised her that this year I’ll spend a few days in Paraty.

Oh, oh... you guys are into Dark Humor!... :)
I don't care anymore, but my friends in Brazil, and in our many chats we had while riding all across the county, every now and then, it appeared the "you guys stole our gold and gave nothin' in return" (like if paying taxes is something that only happened then and there, and no infrastructures were built there at that time), and then we were visiting Universities and lots of other cultural landmarks built during the time that Brazil was part of the Portuguese Empire, that are still the reference in current days.
Because that's the oficial narrative in Brazil, that children learn at school, ever since the Republic was established, blame the Monarchy and Portugal for all the bad things happening in Brazil, so that there wouldn't be any temptation to get back to a Monarchy (now 100% brazilian, not portuguese anymore) -- see this article (in Portuguese, sorry), www.publico.pt/2020/08/09/opiniao/noticia/brasil-ve-antilusitanismo-historico-sistema-ensino-1926791 or this book (from Brazil, eduCAPES): educapes.capes.gov.br/bitstream/capes/207142/2/Historia%20da%20educa%C3%A7%C3%A3o.pdf
Paraty, Angras dos Reis, Ubatuba: beautiful, beautiful areas (even with a Nucleal Power Plant in the middle) -- been there for an entire week, and would love to return.

*A PARATY HISTÓRICA*

About the number of tourists in Brazil and Portugal.. Actually I think its not so fair to compare Brazil and Portugal. Brazil is the country with the most tourists in South America, While Brazil is far away from the developed regions and a flight costs a lot; Portugal is in Europe, the region with most tourists in the world and its quite cheap to go by ryanair, easyjet, trains, etc. You can compare the numbers, sure, but there are lots of variables to considere not just the size of the country like you did, but I undestand that an european wouldn't think this way.

I'm shocked on how "excited" that street vender was about selling her merchandise. It almost seemed like as if she had covid or something.
Hahaha, perhaps she just got the wrong leg out of bed that morning!
@@joenandamalie I CAN SAY WHY...WHEN ONE REPEAT THE SAME WORD OVER OVER AND OVER I GET EXTREMELY ANNOYED AND IRRITATED..IT HAPPENS T ME A LOT...SOMETIMES I SAY.WHICH LANGUAGE AM I SPEAKING RIGHT NOW FOR YOU NOT BEING ABLE TO UNDESTAND..SHE SAID 800 HUNDRED 3 TIMES AND YOU DID NOT GET HER..ITS FRUSTRATING...I DONT HAVE TIME FOR PEOPLE LIKE THAT..
@StayClassy Vlog. What about Iguaçu/Iguazu any planing to go there? That's nature at its maximum power!
We actually wanted to go but we ran out of time :)
@@joenandamalie Ok, maybe next time!
Your videos are great and so natural.
Thanks so much, Joao!
Visit Balneário Camboriú in the state of Santa Catarina, I think you would like it!
We have a video from there coming up! :)
The title of this video? .... Im not sure. Just saying.
You shouldn't be sure about the title. That's why we picked it. We know Portugal was Portugal before it became Brazil. That's why we thought it was a fun title.
We stayed at Carpe Diem because of your video! The best Pousada!
I am enjoying a lot this journey, I am from São Paulo, the first video I saw from you was from Namibia, which is a country that I want to go back, you guys have to visit Lençóis Maranhenses and Maragogi, keep enjoying. Fabio
Maragogi é demais. Sonho de consumo!
Thanks for the very informative video 👍 loved this place👏
👋🏼😊
Thanks, Celia! :)
Obrigadinhos🤩
that street seller girl had a attitude she ain’t attracting no foreign tourists
Yup. It was strange. Why even go to the lengths of setting up shop when not wanting to sell?
If she was grumpy with u imagine with us Portuguese! 😩What an attitude... 😔

Hey Joen and Amelie. I loved the video. specially the last second vendor...Oitocentos! hahahahahahahahahah. By the way, she was rude!
Thanks Rui! She was definitely something... special! :D
nice videos and photos and in particular drone shots (not too many, just the right length and angles) gave me ideas for my next visit to that town (and a video for my two youtube channels). Also informative.. Congratulations. And: long live Cachaça-time..
Ainda tem ouro aí, estou pensando ir aí buscar
🤣🤣
:-) :-) :-)
HAHAHAHAAA. MEU NAMO É ESPANHOL,E ELE FALA SEMPRE QUE OLIVENZA SERÁ SEMPRE ESPANHOLA!!!! 😂😂🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🙌🏻 💛🇧🇷🇪🇸💛
Love it 😍!!
Bom dia!
Nice video! Planning to go there next year with my Brazilian partner ❤️ 🇩🇰🇧🇷
"OI-TO-CEN-TOS!" LOL I'm from Brazil and I've never seen so bad sales person in my life.
Mega linda😍, parece mesmo Portugal men.
Brazil is a wonderful country 🇧🇷🌈💖💖
Sure it is. All the murder and thieving is so charming

Without the Brazilians it could be better😂!!!
Brasil is more the Disneyland of the Horror, due the crime and favelas.
I say that this Ypioca brand is one of the best and most sold here.
Rio is the capital of cachaça, in Rio State there are more more labels than Minas State, but Minas drink more. People from Rio drink Bear.
Muito parecido com Óbidos
