    Confidence is not enough. If Danny Devito is just a confident hair dresser, i can promise you he won't be as "attractive". Passion and accomplishments, as well as good social skills are major factors as to how attractive one may find you.
    But when it comes to first impressions, nothing beats your outward appearance. Nothing. As you said dressing well helps that.
    Furthermore, i think the chat commenter calling out femshep's character model is right. The fact that she doesn't blink (old char model) creeps the hell out of me.

    • @Nikelaos_Khristianos
      @Nikelaos_Khristianos 29 днів тому +3

      Personal appearance is everything to a first impression? Really? Bit shallow if you ask me.
      For instance, mannerisms can elevate how attractive someone is as much as their physical appearance - obviously I’m not talking about the opposite extreme, ie: they look homeless, there’s other problems going on there - but just average, maybe they do one or even two of the things Josh suggested, then mannerisms will help significantly and can offset the preconceptions someone might have based on appearances (moreover, these can be things people have no control over! The colour of their skin, their accent, etc.)
      On the flip-side, if someone looks like a super-model but is rude, disrespectful and just straight up an a*****e, it doesn’t matter that they have those looks - they’re going to come across as a crappy person with no sense of character, that’s going to turn people off as much as a bad appearance. The difference is, is that that person who looks like a super-model, is going to consistently attract bad kinds of people, ie: shallow people with little to no morals or personality of their own. Sh*t sticks together. People have to decide if they want to be a piece of sh*t.

    • @Kbyte27
      @Kbyte27 29 днів тому +12

      @@Nikelaos_Khristianos In general "outward appearance" is everything for FIRST IMPRESSIONS. Including mannerisms is already pushing it to the extreme, because that requires you to observe someone for longer periods of time, which is creepy. People who have poor outward appearance can be rude too you know. Let's not elevate them on a pedestal here.
      And you yourself have become too extreme by mentioning, "The difference is, is that that person who looks like a super-model, is going to consistently attract bad kinds of people, ie: shallow people with little to no morals or personality of their own. Sh*t sticks together. People have to decide if they want to be a piece of sh*t.".

    I recently had the…. experience of working with someone who genuinely had no idea how to give feedback - because you’re dead right, Josh, it was just criticism.
    Her idea was walk up to me, announce “Feedback!” And then essentially proceed to pin everything that she felt had gone wrong in the lesson on me. Even when it made no sense and I was pointing out these inconsistencies to her - while trying to be as polite and calm about it as possible. Undoubtedly, there were some things that I could’ve done better - so I asked the teacher we were working with, not her, and sure enough I got more authentic feedback. Add to the fact that she was basically gaslighting me at several points trying to claim that the lesson had gone badly - and that it was my fault specifically - even though we got told it went well. I was so genuinely confused by the second week of this behaviour, it felt totally unnecessary and whenever I tried to actually talk to this person about this she would just shut down the conversation. She didn’t want to know, it was her way or the highway. Totally entitled, imo.
    I thanked God that I only had to work with this person for a month because she is 100% going to be the definition of a micro-manager and a control-freak one day and she is going to be someone’s least favourite boss and I just can only pity them.

    I once read an article written by a "worker of the oldest trade". She said "No matter how ugly you think you are, there will always be someone who will find you attractive". Sure, we can talk numbers and stuff, but looks will always be surface-level, and they don't really matter in the long run. Being pretty might get you more attention, but it also brings with it a lot of unwanted attention. Personally, I like it when someone looks "okay", because I think I look "okay", and unless we're talking "extremes", it really doesn't matter to me. What one might consider flaws at first eventually turns into features. The things that bother you, you might actually miss when dating someone else. It's the little quirks that set us apart and make us special, it's just a matter of finding someone who's cool with them.
    At the end of the day, what ends up holding any relationship together is chemistry. Personality and a modicum of confidence will always trump looks in the long run. People tend to care a lot more about the gift than they do about the wrapping, especially women. You might think I am ugly, you might think my partner is ugly, you might make fun of us for "being ugly", but at the end of the day, we've been happily together for nearly two decades, while you sit there being lonely and frustrated with your life. So if you think you're so smart, why haven't you made anything meaningful connections? Maybe it's time to reconsider our stance/approach. For starters, calling people ugly is as terrible personality trait that makes you highly undesirable for a lot of people.

    Confidence is sad. Knowledge is sexy. Actual knowledge, actual understanding, getting the complete context of a situation right, being able to explain a situation in great detail and with all the necessary information, a complete destruction of misconceptions and propaganda, a complete rejection of personal intellectual shortcomings. That's sexy.
    Confidence is a joke in comparison to that. Confidence is the ugly side kick that wants to be smart, wants to be knowledgeable, but is too self-obsessed to ever become truly smart and knowledgeable. It's a bandaid that protects the ego and it falls off constantly. It needs to be reapplied constantly. It's ugly, it's worn out, it's pretentious.
    Confidence as a RESULT of knowledge is sexy. But you can never know whether or not confidence is a result of knowledge unless you're knowledgeable yourself. That's why people value confidence more than they value knowledge, because confidence is easy, but knowledge is hard.

      That may not be the confidence Josh was referring to. The confidence Josh is speaking of isn't the belief that you will succeed in everything, or that you're the biggest hotshot on the planet. It's simply not being afraid of failing. It's the idea that even if things don't work out, you'll still be fine. People show lack of confidence when they feel like they're interviewing for a job they can't afford to lose. If they have the mindset that they can't afford to mess this up, and have to do everything perfectly, it will show and it will be very awkward.
      The important element of confidence is being genuine. There needs to be an emotional connection, and one needs the courage to let enough of their genuine self out to make that connection. THAT's the kind of confidence Josh is referring to. So, one can be humble and still be confident.

      “Money/skills/power” are things. You can get things through experiences. Money comes and goes. Skills come through experience and power is a strange, amorphous thing that people obsess over - often to disguise insecurities. I would say that confidence can be faked, in the sense that someone can talk a good fight - but if you press them on actual experiences that they’ve had, they often quickly fall apart. Someone can also just have money but be incredibly vapid and shallow because they just buy their way to things - they don’t buy themselves experiences - even though you don’t need money to have experiences.
      There’s a bizarre proportion of people in this comment section who are placing a disproportionate value on money/looks being the single greatest determiner as to whether or not someone succeeds - sure, those two things help tremendously - but if you use it as the sole determiners, you end up creating a very materialistic world that prioritises its own vanity.

      Well if you don't have or aren't working on any skills or professional competency in anything you're probably wasting your life. And that certainly isn't attractive or appealing.

      As a female person, I have never once said to myself, "My! That man is attractive because of his money/skills/power/etc!" I know that runs counter to the advice given by every "Alpha" you've ever seen on the internet, but trust me when I say, that's not what lady-people are looking for (generally...there's always an exception, but usually our #1 trait we're looking for is a good sense of humor).

    Josh went on this triggered rant because someone said a videogame character is ugly? Like, a fictional character, a 3D model and some lines of code? He really took it as if a real person had been insulted. Also, the whole "you might be scared of really confident women", what does that have to do with anything??? Such an unrelated observation... I like Josh's insight on games, but man... wtf is this pseudo-psychoanalysis? Loooooots of assumptions throughout. Also, a concerning modern trend, people lacking media literacy, i.e. confusing the fictional with the real... If someone points out a 3D model is ugly-looking, that does not mean they will go up to a REAL LIFE person and call them ugly to their faces, same way that a gamer playing "terrorist" side on Counter Strike won't go and commit actual terrorism in real life.
    Like, Josh's whole speech is fine advice for actual mean people that would do such a thing as call a real life person ugly in public, but it really came out of nowhere, a very out of place reaction to a simple comment, lmao.

      @@TheManaTree777 Oh it's a rant alright, I love a good ol' rant! Just not a triggered one. Difference being I don't feel the need to defend a 3D videogame model just because of a silly comment. Like, were it me I'd just shrug the comment off, if Josh thinks the character's pretty, that's also a valid take, lol.

    2:40 Cool, can you say that to the women telling me I am ugly out of nowhere?
    Anyway, you look awful, cover up, as does your Shepard, and you should cover her up.
    Anyways anyway, it seems way easier (and pretty much actually is) to act arrogant and do the superficial stuff, that looks like confidence or like it will give you confidence - working up, doing sports, caring about your looks, cloths, accessories, chasing some money to throw around at people to impress them. Not much of it actually ever trumps confidence, that's true, but finding out how to build up your confidence is extremely difficult and doing so is even more difficult. Plus, chasing the superficial aesthetic of confidence sometimes brings a bit of actual confidence.

    This is extremely condescending and a strange hill to die on. You're saying he's not allowed to say what is and isn't attractive while you're telling him what is and isn't attractive. The character is objectively ugly.
