I have a 86 and I got it just for hunting, put a new motor in it, that motor didn’t make it 300 miles and blew a Head-casket, now waiting on the new motor, while waiting I ordered all new ball joints and idler arm, I’m wanting to replace the front end cause that truck is so loose, all over the road, this video really helped, thanks
Glad it helped! Good luck with that new engine. Hoping to get this LC Engineering motor swap done in the next week or so. Stay tuned and check out the videos of it!
Thanks for posting all this, i got a 92 for my first truck last summer, brought it a few towns over to work on it with some buddies. Someone ran a 2 way stop and it was too icy for me to do anything about it. I kept the truck and took half the insurance money and I hope I made a good choice
I have a growing collection of Toyotas and I don’t plan to ever get rid of this one! Hope to one day get the bed replaced and painted. Hang on to yours, you’ll always be glad you did!
I did my dad suspension with moog and after market parts for his 89 yota about 7 years ago its all giving out already. Doing mine in the coming months and sticking with all oem
Not surprised. Junk! There’s a reason we buy Toyota’s! Cuz they are built with Toyota parts! Lesson learned here, for sure. Hoping they last til I do the solid axle swap. One of these years!
I have also had terrible luck with Moog ball joints. Lasted less than 6 months and 10,000 miles on my 86 Toyota. Replaced them with OEM and haven't touched them in 7 years.
Cool thanks! I did a suspension replacement video over on my other channel before starting this one. You might find some interest in it. 2 part series. ua-cam.com/video/50hBEYSuwAw/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/gLnDSLQHjeo/v-deo.html Wheel shine up. ua-cam.com/video/Ngk9GQ4mqIA/v-deo.html
I put mevotech lower control arms on my 2018 Chevy Colorado and one of them snapped on me. Luckily I was in a parking lot and not the freeway, it was the TTX line as well… “rugged off road”
I really liked your video. I've got a 94' 3.0 with 300k on it. Love that truck, so I decided to drop a bunch of cash that I probably should have spent on a new truck. I found myself asking the same question - "what am I trying to accomplish here?" Anyhow, watching you swap out these cheaper parts gave me some solace that maybe I'm not crazy just getting this thing up and running in decent shape again. Going to hit the ball joints and idler arms this week. Thanks for the primer.
If you restore it you wont spend 40 or 50 thousand on it and you won’t have a 400 500 600 dollar monthly payment for 60 or 72 months and not have to pay full coverage insurance just need patience and patience is free👍
Great video and warning about that brand of ball joints. I know this came out only a few years ago but it seems like it's from another age when he says the truck is lucky to not be in the boneyard and that maybe he should be spending the money on a new truck instead. The value of these trucks and the price of new trucks have both gone way up in the last few years. Definitely worth rockauto prices to keep these trucks on the road, unclear if you could say the same about new trucks being worth their price.
When it comes to ball joints and tie rods, Id definitely recommend going OEM. Toyota parts are a bit more expensive, but they are quality parts, and they'll fit perfectly. I wouldn't trust Chinese parts at all.
I bought this truck for $1200 USD, when my oldest (now 23) son turned 16. It's currently my second least used truck out of my 5 Toyotas. All but this Tundra are paid off! Check it out: ua-cam.com/video/mXTr6BHSHyM/v-deo.html
I’m curious if you wish you’d paid the extra for oem? I’m about to do this project on my 87 Toyota 4x4. Priced the parts on LCE and after watching this video, for me, I think it’s worth paying for an almost guaranteed direct fit.
Yep. I’d have to agree. I dont know what the price difference is, but how does a manufacturer make something that doesn’t fit like this?! You had one job!!
I go with everything mostly LCE but if I can find OEM toyota locally or on ebay for cheaper I go that route but I dont mind paying retail for what they offer that is specific to them. I've spent thousands with them throughout the years with no problem ever.
One of the few good quality videos. Clear footage with plenty of light and good explanation for DIY. I watched some videos where some knuckle heads recorded the video in the at night and started their videos " if you think this you are dead wrong". Those videos will go down to drain as people haters who recorded them
Agreed. I’m a pretty big patron of Napa! Go in there quite often! Quality usually, although at a fairly premium price too. Although I have yet to try any heavy suspension or steering parts.
Moog tie rod ends are piece of crap. I installed the inner and outer tie rod ends but they rusted after a year. I replaced the oem toyota with minor rust and play but the boots were worn out. I bought the mevotech upper and lower for my van but made in Taiwan and the parts were not hard to install with no grinding.
Yeah. At the time I purchased these parts it was for a “lightly used” application. Turns out I’m going to be wheeling it a bit harder, and if I’d had that knowledge (I now do, moving forward) I’ll only buy solid parts, like I’ve done on practically 90% of the $5,000+ OEM parts I’ve put on my Land Cruisers. These things suck! LOL!!
Wow. Just had a great laugh.... I just spent all day on my 87 but the ball joints where still good. used all original parts from the old stuff I had gathered for the job. I installed zerks in every part that moves even drilling and tapping for them on the tie rods. Now I'm good for another hundred thousand miles on top of the 300 k my pickup has on it , that is IF I grease it. New wheel bearings, disks, calipers, drive axles, seals, interior, etc......and it really did not cost that much. I am not a fan of china parts, junk.
Just bought an 87 myself and the drivers side ball joints are cracked, shop quoted me 2.2k for an upper and lower, i said screw that and here i am figuring out how to replace it! Lmfao
Sorry man. I just used Rock Auto on this job. Not my favorite, I prefer OEM Toyota parts of course, but... So it’s whatever their website says for this 1986 truck.
Upgradeee! Chan no communicate with Mr Miyagi Son🤷🏻♂️. You had to add some Fung shui🧘♂️🏋🏻♂️ to those Wèizào Chin-no-ese want to be not-japanese parts...

That idea for raising the upper control arm with the jack in the truck is genius!
Thanks for the info of all the video’s I search this was the most complete and easy to understand on how to I should have no problem doing my truck

@@AdventureTEQ bed replace and paint is in my future too. I guess it was the first year they used plastic bed liners and it trapped water.
😬

Thanks for the help! Doing the lower ball joints in my 1993 Pickup tomorrow morning. Let you know how it goes!
Killer! Hopefully less hassle than mine was!
Well done. Easily followed and understood. Thank you! About to embark on a lift kit and thought I should rebuild first.

..@ 7:49...there is also a "Cold" spray and heat that works to loosen rusted bolts....

Agreed! I almost always go OEM Toyota parts. It’s always worth it. These are a perfect example of why! You get what you pay for!
Thanks for the video. Looking to this on my 88 rwd to fix the loose steering and creaking under load.
How does it drive now?
Drives fine on those parts. Time will tell how well they hold up.
When it comes to ball joints and tie rods, Id definitely recommend going OEM. Toyota parts are a bit more expensive, but they are quality parts, and they'll fit perfectly. I wouldn't trust Chinese parts at all.
Here here! 🍻
It’s cheaper to restore it than to have a 400,500,600 dollar monthly payment for 60 or 72 months just look at it that way brother

How did you get the tire jack to stand so stable and not slip off and cause the top plate to upper control arm to smash down 😅
Magic
Thank you very much! quite helpful

I’m recently turning over to LCE for stuff I can’t find at local Toyota, or Cruiser Outfitters. Pretty stoked on LCE now!

Gracias por tu video. Ahora puedo hacerlo yo mismo desde mi casa
I have a 1990 Toyota pick 2wd 3vze where would I be able to purchase the whole for this job ? That’s OEM or close to it ? Please
I’m not sure. Best bet is to contact a parts supplier specializing in Toyotas! Good luck.
Go for Napa next they have better quality parts under the Napa name for cheaper
Agreed. I’m a pretty big patron of Napa! Go in there quite often! Quality usually, although at a fairly premium price too. Although I have yet to try any heavy suspension or steering parts.
How did the mevotech end up working for you over time? I've had the same parts in my cart
So far they’re fine. Only a few thousand miles so far.
Moog tie rod ends are piece of crap. I installed the inner and outer tie rod ends but they rusted after a year. I replaced the oem toyota with minor rust and play but the boots were worn out. Holy shit LoL. What kind of air impact gun is that??? 😅
That pisses me off that you had to hack that ball joint to fit it . I really hope I do not have the same issue lol thanks for the vid

How different is this to a 1993 Toyota pickup?
Probably pretty similar!
Do you know the part number for the lower ball joints was?i was going to check mine. I just ordered some of this brand.
