The appeal is very much the talk and invaluable words of wisdom throughout the video. Also the length of the video is fine as its nice to go through the whole process. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge Stuart.

Too many people speed up their videos theses days. I believe most think that by doing so a person will be driven to buy their full length video elsewhere. I refuse to watch those. An artist with your experience and wisdom is golden and I am more apt to support such work.
I paint in Oil, Acrylic, and Watercolor. I've had a difficult time deciding where I belong and in just two of your videos you have shown me that I don't have to decide. I can do them all and appreciate each one for what it is.
Thank you sir, you truly are inspiring !

Half the pleasure with your videos is the possibility to see each brushstroke, and the effect of it. The other half is your very calm, pleasant voice giving us tips, and telling stories from your early life as a painter and graphics designer. But there is nothing wrong in silence for a while every now and then, because the real time painting makes it easy to follow the progress anyway. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you.

I've been painting now for about two years - retirement is grand! Thank you for your videos, they have helped me, immensely. Like many, I've seen a large and varied number of videos and most of them are helpful in some ways. Unfortunately, most offer cut down versions and the viewer loses a lot of the benefits of seeing and hearing the details. Yours, and this one in particular, was very instructive. PLEASE continue with normal speed and detailed videos. Thank you so much for doing this!

I'm not a hero, just a big fan of you, your painting and your voice. I love how you started with definite intentions, and ended up with something different. A happy accident. I once started to paint a seascape that ended up being a snow scene in the Welsh mountains, yes , complete with sheep 😂💚

Our biology as humans we are wanting be part of mother earth and storms let us feel the earth and how small we are so you are more in touch with your feelings and you show that in your paintings and you do that very well. Keep it, you my friend.

This is reminiscent of when I did faux finishes and I would use a scumbling brush to ever so lightly blend the elements that I wanted to. What makes an artist is his/her ability to bring their vision to life. And I love the way you allow the painting to unfold by playing with the paint. As you dab here, and wipe there, you see shapes that emerge, that then form the foundation of your painting. You then manipulate the paint to accentuate or mute various aspects of the brush strokes, tonal values, and textures until you are reasonably pleased with what you've done. I very much enjoy watching the process and feel quite inspired to just "play" with the paint, allowing the shapes and image to emerge from the board or canvas as I see it revealing. Thank you Stuart, I appreciate your time, your lovely sense of humor, your spirited chatter, and your well honed skill and talent. Blessings to you and please upload as many videos as you like. I am enjoying watching them and now, if you'll excuse me, it is time to paint as I am newly inspired!

I am 72 years and gave up painting when I had my beautiful daughter. I just happened upon Stuart's amazing way of painting. Well, I am dying to get my paints out again and follow this lovely gentleman. I am looking over some of my old paintings and they definitely could do with Stuart's magic brush. How do I send a photo to Stuart of one painting that I was never happy with. I feel with some help, it could just turn a corner and become interesting. Thank you Stewart for sharing your wonderful talent. You have certainly rekindled my love of oil painting, and I shall enjoy many an hour watching you work.

Agreed. Too many youtube artists do these detailed paintings and skip over the tiny details that newbie painters like myself have no clue how they're done. One guy does an outline of the mountain, then says, "Just highlight this now." and the video skips to after all this detail was added. How the hell did he get from that basic shape to that detailed shaded mountain?

You are a wonderful teacher. Yes I do appreciate your full videos as I do paint along side in stop and starts after first watching the complete video. You probably have a wee bit of a captive audience these days what with all the isolation happening. helps so much in boosting morale. The full video accelerates the learning curve for an absolute novice by observing your superb style. Switched from canvas to hard surface and a bit more oil, much easier for the illusion of detail. No more mistakes, just scrub them out, brilliant. Look forward to one day attending your live class in France.

I very much enjoy your teaching methods. Watching while you paint is relaxing , which is a change for me. I usually would approach a new painting very nervously , wanting it to be perfect almost from the very first stroke. If it starts going wrong , frustration with myself begins , and the jury in my head starts discouraging me. Your calm comments on being brave and to go on, “after all it is only a painting “ that can be wiped off to try a different approach, made me feel less up-tight. Also your method of few colors used in thin layers, simplifying the tools used to hardware brushes and paper towels . Brilliant! Eliminating terpenoids to clean brushes was a wonderful surprise ! I don’t have a separate studio and paint where my husband will sometime be around . He always complained of the smell of the terpenoids , which discouraged me from painting. So, to some up ; the easier tools , which changed my mind about abandoning oil painting completely, because I can’t hold the small brushes anymore because of arthritis , simplifying colors used, and your relaxed style has brought me around to changing my mind. Oh, this makes me very happy. Thank you so much ! Please go on talking while you paint . You are informative and encouraging. In all , a very good instructor. Stay safe during this very challenging time. Theresa

I am really enjoying your videos, and learning quite a lot. I've been painting for a fair number of years, but in acrylics and mostly figurative work. I am just now starting to take a serious look at landscape painting, and for years, been intimidated by oils, so in a sense, I am a beginner. And yes, I made it all the way to the end! I am enamored of your entire presentation style; everything from the tone of your voice, to the stories and asides that you throw in. I am especially fascinated with watching you paint however, because you make it look so effortless. OK, effortless with decades of practice! You make me believe that I could also be that bold! I will keep watching. Thank you for sharing.

Believe it or not I earned a degree in English Lit and one from the School of Communications at Rutgers University. I worked many years for several newspapers, magazines and that sort of thing. I actually had a column for a magazine called Atlantic City Weekly called Always Turned on-ha! But that’s the slogan for Atlantic City-it was actually about entertainment-music, various entertainers etc. But, I had always painted in one way or another, be it furniture, gifts, whatever I could get my hands on. I now have a little artisan jewelry business-online. My point is I’ve always been a creative. We a decided to truly focus on learning how to paint pictures, I followed tutorials and even had enrolled in a couple of online academies. I’ve tried oil but it was a disaster, lol. I did follow the Boss Ross and it turned out ok, but I settled in acrylics as I thought it was easier but always wanted the feel and look of oil. Before you, I have never picked it up again. Even copying old masters I used acrylics and have never been able to find my voice or style. It’s been like a void or something-hard to explain. But in this short time since I’ve found your videos I have actually been able to be successful, essentially 😬 and have finally, I believe, have found tonalism to be the most satisfying and beautiful way of painting-maybe I have finally found my voice and I have you to thank for that. So thank you, you’ve helped me find what I’ve been searching for as painting, for me, feeds my soul, relieves stress and a million other things I don’t think I can explain. Gah! Another long comment, so sorry, I just wanted to share that with you and really just say thank you😊

As a Taurean and earth person, I do love some sea and cliff tops with some sea and sky.. so am feeling very inspired with what you’re doing here. Salut from the Netherlands 💋

I love your narrative! It is very informative hearing you "think out loud" and solve problems.

Love this one. Going try the technique you used on the cliffs on my Western mountains. Think it will improve them greatly. Thanks

Wonderful video; not too long. Of course, I’m a novice, so there’s that!
Your stories are great & I could watch all day without you talking if need be, but the tips you give are invaluable! Thank you!

Thank you--I am learning a great deal from watching entire videos. I want to paint in this way, and your words are encouraging.

After watching a few of your landscape videos, I decided to try painting a path going through some trees. Your approach seemed so intuitive, I just knew I wanted to try it. I achieved the most natural looking tree trunks! I made a few mistakes after the trunks, mostly overworking the leaves of the trees before I realized what I had done wrong. But I learned a lot through that process, and after walking away and leaving it to dry for a few days, I was able to break up the overworked areas, and I really like it now! I just started oil painting a few weeks ago and had only tried a couple of still lives, so I’m totally thrilled with the results of my Stuart Davies experiment! Can’t wait to try a few more landscapes and a seascape too. Thank you for your very encouraging videos!
