What do you think of the Russian Army's new main squeeze the AK-12? Good move for them to stick with the 5.45 while the US thinks about the larger 6.8 x51mm?

How can I tell you. I served in the Soviet Army in 1991-1992. Then we all had an AK-74, chambered for 5.45x39. I will not say that this is just a super weapon, but with the tasks that were set to us, it coped very well, on a 10 point scale - 8 points. Professionals in the Russian army (I mean exactly army professionals, not special troops) never used optics unnecessarily. At a distance of up to 100 meters, the AK-47 works even without optics, and very decently (if you do not wear glasses with diopters). All other tasks were then solved with the standard army sight PSO-1, which, up to 250 meters, allowed 1 ruble to hit the coin (equal in diameter to the American silver dollar). Now the conditions of the battle, and the armor protection, and the tactics of the battle have changed very much, and therefore the weapon is changing. By the way, AK-12 and AK-74 differ roughly as SCAR from M4A1.

While the video is generally stays true to the facts, it has many little inaccuracies
I.e. Zlobin's AK-12 never had a quick chamge barrel, nor a "hyperburst" capability (and 900rpm is not a HYPERburst by any means). The 60-round magazines are 4-stack.
Also, Kalashnikov concerh is mostly controlled by private investors, and ROSTEC only holds blocking share (25%+1 share)
New chief designer who managed the "new" AK-12 is Sergey Urzhumtsev
The competing design from Kovrov (the A-545 / 6P67) is completely missed in the story, which is directly related to the "unusual 2-round burst mode" (because military wanted a balanced action rifle, and requirements for the "Ratnik" trials were written accordingly)
Some KM-AK videos are mixed into the lot at roughly 10:00
And while you are correct that optics is important. the key feature is that AK12 can mount ANY modern optics, domestic or imported, and while 1P87 red dot is current standard issue, there are a number of better sights (Night/IR, LPVO and red dots) in the works, which could be seamelessly integrated onto any AK-12
And no, Zlobin's AK-12 was NOT revolutionary at all. it was just a more "westernized" (think "cargo cult") version of the older system, but much more expensive and much less reliable than expected.

@@Gabriel-yd4bq Outdated unguided artillery and air defenses do not win wars lol. You're bringing up irrelevant weapon systems, just like the AK-12 they do not win wars by themselves. Training, logistics, and tactics are all things the Russians are clearly behind in. The Russian military as a whole is lacking and fallen behind in various ways.
Russia has weak logistics and resource production, and their military industry is barely comparable to NATO, which is far and above the most important to a military. The majority of troops are using outdated equipment as well. These problems are due to a low budget as well as a weak economy. Their training is also one of the most lackluster and non-thorough among world powers; their conscript force is extremely poorly trained, which is the majority of Russian troops.
To touch on the S-400 system, they are mostly unproven and the only thing we know are Russia's claims (not to mention F-35 SEAD groups would be able to disable said system in contested air space). While yes Russia has a large amount of artillery (mostly attributed to the USSR), it doesn't make up for the rest of their small military and would STILL be outnumbered by NATO forces. On top of that unguided munitions are mostly irrelevant today with the advent of maximum accuracy guided munitions. In the modern day battlefield, dominant air forces supporting well trained armor divisions, all with strong logistical support, is what makes an effective military. This is something the Russians are undoubtedly skilled at, but would almost certainly be outdone by combined NATO forces either by superiority or by pure numbers. On top of that Russia's industry is not suited to support a large scale conflict in Europe if NATO gets involved. Russia today is not a significant threat to NATO, but it is definitely a threat to smaller neighbors to Russia, which are currently being invaded, bullied, and destabilized by the Russians in a small attempt for power and expansion.

8:27 I mean, using physical foliage from the surrounding environment it literally the best camouflage option there is. We do it in the British Army. Using the local foliage means you better obscure your silhouette and you ensure your colours match the surrounding terrain. Granted, we tend not to stick *as much* plant matter on ourselves as those Russians in that clip, that amount looks cumbersome and obstructive, but we do put foliage on our helmet netting, and tuck some into our webbing at the belt.

Back when I was doing my phase one training we did a cam and concealment lesson (seven S's and all that) and we were then given two mins to find a place to hide out in a field. Our Section commander would try to find us after the time was up. The condition was we had to being pointing our rifles at him (unloaded, made safe, blank firing adaptors attached), so that we couldn't just hide out of view.
I hid behind a small mound surrounded by what I think was wheat, tucked that into my helmet, found a nice comfortable position and hold so I could point my rifle at them (ensuring the BFA was hidden among the wheat since it's bright yellow), and stayed very still, but I let myself gently sway left and right a little with the wind like the wheat was because I was afraid that if I was the only thing not swaying among the patch of wheat it'd make me stand out. Managed to remain unspotted until our section commander gave up, but the swaying was probably unnecessary. xD

EDIT . just for info evry ak 12 that gets delivered comes with a red dot sight , magnifier, flashlight , front grip , and supressor . the army recives the rifle in two packages one rifleman package and one full/ special forces package. the full package includes stuff like a laser and thermal sight etc

IMO, mounting night vision on the rifle and not the helmet is superior. I think when people used NODS, the get a false sense of security of thinking they can see others but others can’t see them. By putting the night vision on the rifle, troops are reliant on natural night vision and get a more intuitive sense of if they are truly visible to others. Also, rifle mounted night vision will naturally make troops favor passive aiming, whereas NODS gets troops to naturally favor active aiming. I think, all things being equal, an army equipped with rifle mounted NV will outmaneuver NODS equipped armies.

Current AK-12 that is being procured for Russian military, at the heart is still the same tried-and-true AK-74. Bolt carrier and bolt are interchangeable with older AK-74 models for example. Essentially AK-12 is an AK-74 that had its exterior redesigned to employ the current trends such as free-floated handguard with pic rails, pic rails on the top cover, adjustable stock, ergonomic grip, magazine with windows. The rifle was designed to be able to readily accept the plethora of attachments that a soldier wants to put on. Tacticoolized if you will.
It was the initial AK-12 project that existed between 2011 and 2015 that has super-low recoil and looked slightly different. But it was extremely rushed, HIGHLY unreliable and, what made it stillborn, needed a completely new production line for manufacture which would cost stupid money. Vlad Onokoy was involved in testing of that rifle and put around 14000 rounds through the prototypes. He wrote an article about it. Not sure if it exists in english language version.
A small comment regarding accuracy of the rifles: Army version of AK-74M had to print a 15cm group at 100m with standard ball ammo when using stock iron sights. That amounts to around 5MOA. With an optic that group requirement is 8.5cm so under 3MOA. However the reality of combat is that infantry soldiers with assault rifles actually KILL one another mostly at ranges well below 200m. When Russians captured Georgian M-4s and compared them to service AK-74Ms, they found the accuracy to be pretty much lineball

Let me tell you a secret, but capturing Western rifles has never been a problem. And the only point that was inferior to Western models is hitting from unstable positions, that is, in ergonomics. Everything else is either equal to or better than Western samples, an obvious plus of 5.56 cartridge in initial speed, but 5.45 outperforms 5.56 at a distance, so 5.45 loses energy more slowly than 5.56.

In a conventional war (as opposed to Afghanistan style counter insurgency operations), the outcome is not meaningfully impacted by whether you have a picatinny rail and sub-MOA accuracy or not. Oh and the fact the an94 was 2 burst fire which was designed around multiple hit accuracy and reduced recoil and the only way to do that is shoot 2 bullet at once because 3 is looking over their head that's what gives it the higher rate of fire in burst mode. It chambers a second round while the bolt is technically only half way through its recoil with a weird mechanism. Given how much emphasis I would expect on backwards compatibility, I am surprised that it does not include a side rail to mount legacy optics. My assumption is that pic rails get in the way, but if they are not going to make the bolt compatible with the old AK-74, then they should have redesigned the bolt so that the rails can be mounted lower, so that the old optics can clear the pic rails.

The two round burst comes from the idea that a fast enough action can get both rounds out before the first bullets recoil is felt. Whether to improve armor penetration by stacking two hits on top of each other or to improve hit probability by increasing the amount of rounds fired.
It's something the east and west have theorized and attempted to implement for decades

    • @cm-pr2ys

@@cm-pr2ys 2 round burst has it's roots all the way back to original AK, which proved to be somewhat of an arse for the average individual who gets the issue (We talk about agricultural country who got smashed with WW1, got civil war, de-facto struggled in it well in the 30s, had a lot of sanctions slapped on it (As well as overseas assets "Not stolen, just waiting for the legit owners" withheld) and then pulled into WW2 the hard way. As a result, rather choppy industrialization and a lot of conscripts still being peasants or low qualification worker with intellect of a brick). Typical rookie was either sitting on semi-auto or produced 5-6 round bursts (If you actually pull the trigger on original in full auto, you'll understand). This is something brass didn't like, so average rookie conscript was taught to use mostly two positions (Safe and full auto), yet fire with the light tap, shooting 1-2 rounds at a time, with a second follow-up burst at the target to more or less ensure the mission kill. This quickly evolved in "Two by two" and then engineers had their faces shoved in this "two by two" any time they had to contact the brass for technical tasks. So, the "Abakan" competition (Which gave the world AN-94) wasn't really all that unique in it's 2 round burst requirement, it's simply one time when brass was able to cut through the red tape and no-sell the party meddling in brass affairs.

On my point of view, without any personal experiences with AK, I love these new AK models. It's a real true modernization of the the assault rifles. Even if for me the best option remains probably the AK-19 which can use Nato ammunition I am not agreed at all with the rumors explainig that the AK-12 is only an updated version of the old AK-M. The system is similar yes but the gun has been reviewed entirely. If this information was correct we should explain why, as example, a Mk18 is not considered as a new version of the old M16 used during the Vietnam war. On the west side we consider that the origin of a M4 is the M16 ... derivative of the AR15...and that the MK18 is an AR 15 platform but a new gun... Why we couldn't consider the AK-12 and Ak-19 like new guns based on a AK platform. For me it's not only an updated version of the AK ...it's a new weapon.

Not sure what you mean by, "the AK did not have optics", but I served in the mid 80's, does not matter where, and we had nightvision scope for the AK. It was quite big, compared to modern nightvision gear, but it was permanently fixed to the top metal cover thing. All you need to do is push the button on the back, and take off the top cover. Then you could click on the nightvision scope with its own fixed top cover. You could do this in a couple of seconds. Not sure if I explain this right, I'm not sure what that top metal cover is called in english. But you basically had 2 of them, one with the scope mounted, and one with nothing for during the day. And you could switch between the 2 as and when needed, within seconds. Can't remember what the scope was called, my brain is awol, but it had like rubber thing that only opens when you put your eye to it. You could only open it in the dark, or something inside would burn out. It might not have been as tough as modern nightvision, but it was amazingly good. You could literally see everything, even with no moon in pitch black night. Everything was green, but still you could see everything.
So not sure how common it was, but the AK47 definitely did have at least some optics. It just did not use the picatinny rail.

It aged like a shitty potato, we knew what was gonna happen, yet when it did everyone was surprised, because it is a shitty potato.

Any thoughts about sticking with the .545 instead of heading to something like the 6.8mm the US might be planning (I say might until one of the designs actually gets adopted).

Huge stockpiles of 5.45 and it works.
They work on a pretty small budget compared to the US and tanks and planes are probably more important than a new gun. The comfort of the common infantry grunt is not really a priority in Russia.

@@sebastianriemer1777 The point is that we are replacing .556 due to body armor. If Russia is fighting troops in NATO with Body Armor, then it has the same problem.

@@HanSolo__ So, why introduce a new .545 if you are going to switch back to 7.62x39. I am not sure that cartridge is good enough at this point versus body armor with ceramic plates.

They are using a 3 caliber system, 5.45 for light infantry, 7.62x39 for engagement with body armor similar to 6.8mm, 7.62x54R for battle rifle, sniper and MGs like our .308), and it works. Americans is the odd one who is always trying to consolidate everything into one caliber, but assault and battle rifle is at least for now serving two different purposes
