Wow! thanks so much for your kind words. This is the video version of how I teach a game. Many takes and edits. In person it's a different story :). Thanks again!
This game has been waiting patiently on my shelf all pandemic and tonight I'm finally meeting up with my gaming partner to play! Thank you so much for the informative videos
Thank you for all of your amazing videos on Gloomhaven. I have just started playing and completed the 1st 2 scenarios with my son. It was great to watch through your content and find the areas where we have been making mistakes with the rules. I'm sure we will make more, but this will help with our enjoyment. I just need to find a place in the UK that sells those storage boxes at a reasonable price. All together it is the same cost as a custom inset. Keep up the great content.
This is, by far, the best video explaining monster AI on this website. Thank you so so much for making this video! I started playing yesterday (tabletop) and we were lost when it came to the monster movement, even though I had read the rule book twice.
Thanks DMAW! I am right there with you, but trying to slowly get better. There were a few takes that I deleted from this video in editing once I realized I made a couple of rules oversights ;)
LOVE your style. It's paced just right. Your explanations and examples are easy to follow and the videography is excellent. Thanks for the time and energy to do this.
Really clear, as always! Thanks for this series of videos, I found them really clear and useful. Was really looking forward for this one about Monsters AI. One note: at 12:27 it might be worth to write that the Brute gets attacked because closer in proximity. Keep up the good work!
I was looking for a video explaining monster AI to prepare for my first game, and this one hit the spot. Best related video I've found so far. Congrats and thanks! :)
The example at 14:15 , If the monster only had a movement of 3, would it then cross the hazard to find focus or still go around even though it won't get an attack.
If an acrcher has traps behind it as is adjacent to it's focus, will it still move back in to a trap to avoid disadvantage? And what if a monster has a choice of moving longer and avoid traps to attack a target or a shorter path to attack it's focus but through a trap?
12:00 what about if it' s the archer turn and he draws a just movement card (withouth attack options) and he is already in range for attacking? does he still moove like a melee towards the focus or stay and loose the turn waiting for an attack card?
15:55 You mention that the first tie breaker is proximity. Is this proximity measured from the current monster hex or from the hex within range and LoS? Since you next say that the distance is two, I guess the second option is the correct, right? However, later on the quizzes, you count them from their current location. So, was the proximity in the former example 3, instead?
14:59 if say a bandit was blocked from moving for some reason by allied monsters instead of the spike-traps next to the door, and the shortest way to a player was to go through the thorn-traps, would the monster skip its movement that turn or would he choose to go through the traps? Thanks for this awesome tutorial
@@ModernTablegamer But okay, wait a minute. At 6:12 you say that to determine the monster's focus you are going to count hexes and compare movement. Then, when it turns out to be a tie, you say that for the tiebreaker you are going to ... count hexes and compare movement?
Question @25:20- does the number of characters mean the number of adventures still alive at the time the boss is activated, or the number of adventurers in the party, or the number of characters (monsters and adventures) on the board? Thank you so much for these videos! This is hands down the best series I've seen on this game. Cheers!
I am pretty sure it is the number of party members that started the scenario. Irregardless if the party member was exhausted before triggering the boss. But it does not include monsters. (Unless there is a rule that says otherwise)
I know I'm late on this but still learning the game but at 15:40 for your example correct me if im wrong but if your action card has a range but the enemy has a - for range mean he's not able to do range attack.
Your quiz 2 also does same thing, i'm pretty thats wrong. Page 9 of rule book mention A "-" as the range value signifies the monster's normal attack action can only target adjacent hexes. He only has a sword equip. Those action card are use for both bandit guard and archer, the range should be ignore for bandit.
@@kennymcintyre4791 Yes those Bandit Guards normally don't have a ranged attack. But if you look at the ability card he flips over for them, they gain a ranged attack with a range of 2 at the cost of having a -1 to movement.
Nice videos. One question: If it is the hero's turn because he has a lower initiative, but the monster's card shows "Shield X" or "Retaliate X" , do I have to apply it? Or it doesn't have to be applied since the monster's turn hasn't come yet (higher initiative)?
@@ModernTablegamer Glad you answered that as it was an actual question I had (timing of reshuffle). Also, thank you for the excellent video in general.
I believe your ranged example starting at 16:40 is incorrect. A monster will focus on the enemy it can make it's current attack against using the least amount of movement. In a melee attack that would be the closest enemy. In this ranged example, the Spellweaver is in range with the monster not having to use any movement at all, therefore the Spellweaver would be the focus.....or so I thought until I found the ruling from Isaac Childress - :The archer judges who can be brought into range with the fewest movements, but if multiple enemies are already within range, it still judges closeness based on proximity before going to a tie-breaker,
The way you explain is fantastic, I have never seen anyone explain so well in a video before.
I really appreciate it! Thanks!
I hope someday I am gonna be as good teacher as you. The way you deliver the informations is an inspiration for me. Thank you for this series.

Your narration for for videos is so well done. And the graphics and camera work is spectacular. Subbed.
Thanks so much Mr.P!
Thanks for these videos. I just started playing solo myself, and I see that I have been making some rules oversights.

Superb playlist. After watching other videos, these are the ones that taught us how to play properly. Cheers brother
Thanks for passing this along. I love to hear it!
Like the way you explain. Love Gloomheaven any other game like this outside Gloomheaven expansion
Love your videos. Thorough and concise. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing!
So glad to hear! Thank you!
This is astounding. Thanks for the Concise and Informative How-To-Play :D
Thanks for the videos. I love how detailed and thorough you are.
Thanks Jamie!

Hi Giuseppe, That's great and thanks so much! I'll add the clarification at 12:27 and upload the Klingon subs.

Superb instructions for monsters. I love the quizzes and I am happy to report I got 100% :) Thanks Teach!
Such a wonderfully made video, very helpful. So much effort put into this, thank you very much
Wow! thank you so much!
So clarifying ! Thanks for the video !
The example at 14:15 , If the monster only had a movement of 3, would it then cross the hazard to find focus or still go around even though it won't get an attack.
It would avoid the hazards/traps even if it doesn't get an attack this turn, as long as a trap/hazard-free path exists
Thanks my man, great tutorials!
Amazing explanation, thanks a lot!
I’m glad it helped. Thanks!
If an acrcher has traps behind it as is adjacent to it's focus, will it still move back in to a trap to avoid disadvantage? And what if a monster has a choice of moving longer and avoid traps to attack a target or a shorter path to attack it's focus but through a trap?
24:24
Suppose there is another trap blocking the spellweaver
He will still focusing in the spellweaver or the brute (as he has a safer path)
12:00 what about if it' s the archer turn and he draws a just movement card (withouth attack options) and he is already in range for attacking? does he still moove like a melee towards the focus or stay and loose the turn waiting for an attack card?
Thanks so much for the help! You should do a video on how to do a random dungeon
Thanks Zaruma! Thanks for the suggestion.
Excellent how to play video series. I haven't received my Gloomhaven game yet, and I feel I have the game rules down.
I don't see Klingon subtitles as an option in the subtitles. I also have Annotations on but don't see any throughout the video. Any advice? Thank you!
Very helpful, thanks a lot 🤗

Hi twovikings abroad. The monster would still go through the traps if that were the only option available and thanks!
Very helpful, thank you :)
So the distance between characters is measured in empty spaces and not with a ruler from center to center?
Yep, just count hexes and leave the ruler behind. You may need one of those nice lasers to make it easier to find line of sight though.
@@ModernTablegamer But okay, wait a minute. At 6:12 you say that to determine the monster's focus you are going to count hexes and compare movement. Then, when it turns out to be a tie, you say that for the tiebreaker you are going to ... count hexes and compare movement?

10:55
To move to the brute you need 6 movments
I can count 5 by the other way... this no change the final result
Do monsters move onto a trap if it’s the only way to attack the player? Or would it give up its move
Hi Brandon, Yes, monsters move onto traps, but like you said, if it's the only option

I think so. It has not activated yet. So you would not need to worry. (Pays to be quick 👍😝)
5:50 - shouldn't you reshuffle that pile of cards then?
Hi John, good question. That pile will get shuffled, but it doesn't happen until the end of the round.
