Because it is not a violin. It is an instrument that has a very old tradition in Sweden. The oldest pictures of it date back to around 1350. It has 4 strings that are playable, just like the violin but also 12 drone strings, one for each of the twelve notes in the octave that will help contribute to a much richer sound. As you may see if you watch closely your left hand will be used to finger tangents that will force wooden pegs to shorten a playable string to produce the note you want to play. As there are four playable strings the instrument can have up to four rows of such tangents, but sometimes just three leaving the uppermost string as a drone. You can not play a glissando as the pegs will have the same effect as bands on for instance a guitar, and as there must be room for all tangents the instrument tends to be long and much heavier than a violin. It is simply more easy to play the instrument in a low position than as a violin is normally held. Today it is still a very popular folk music instrument in Sweden, but as this and other videos on UA-cam shows it lends itself beautifully to playing baroque music.
In Swedish it is called "Nyckelharpa". You can look up more music on this instrument by searching for this word. It has some resemblance to a Hurdy Gurdy where you also use tangents instead of pressing down directly ona a played string.
