The Fender EOB Stratocaster comes with a Fernandes Sustainer. I have one, and it seems to operate pretty much like your Jackson, with on/off, three sustainer modes, and an intensity control. It's a fantastic guitar.
Fender owns Jackson, so it is reasonable that they use the same implementation.

I have the same and it indeed is a fantastic guitar, a fantastic pick-up and sustainer. Also used with a little distortion or drive, it sounds like a new thing in our band!

I was just looking at these pickups yesterday. Amazing, basically a pickup that works backwards. Feed electricity, the signal from the bridge pickup, into the pickup, it then creates a magnetic field which in turn vibrate the strings which then in turn is picked up by the bridge pickup creating a positive feedback loop. edit: You can find the D.I.Y unit itself on reverb for about $500AUD.

As awesome as a sustainiac pup is I think my choice is always gonna have to be a Digitech Freqout pedal. It let's you do that sustainiac thing on every guitar and fine tune the process. Though I'm always gonna want that Radiohead guys signature Fender strat with a sustainiac in it.
Thank you for informing me. I'd rather spend money on a pedal I can use on any guitar. Than just one guitar. I was also planning on adding the sustainiac pup on a guitar but it takes alot of electronics and I would of had to route the guitar. I'd much rather get the pedal. And I think they're cheaper. I've been looking for this pedal for about a year lol
@@Sl33zytheclown damn man. You're welcome. Yeah the Freqout is perfect. It has way more controllability (if that's a word)... You can dial that thing in to make each note ring out like the amp is just turned up really loud or full on wild shit. You can dial in how sensitive the effect is and everything. It's a great pedal. I mean it definitely uses up a slot on a board but if thats a sound you love then it's worth it.
Also if you get it... you can put it anywhere in your signal chain. (Ya know... just try shit... no wrong answers)... but it does constitute a "Pitch Shifter" in form if not in full function... so the closer it is to the guitar the better its gonna work. Say you have a classic fuzz, tuner, Overdrive, Distortion, chorus, delay, tremolo, and Reverb.
You go Fuzz. Tuner. Freqout. Overdrive. Distortion. Chorus. Delay. Reverb. Then Tremolo.
Just so ya know.
Which it's still a taste thing so you can move that however you want.

Not quite correct. The Sustainiac will actually keep the string vibrating whereas the Freqout pedal only modifies the incoming signal - it doesn't actually do anything to the sustain of your note(s).
I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned but definitely Manson Guitars have been using Fernandes Sustainer in the very late 90's for Matthew Bellamy's guitars until they switched to the Sustainiac and they have been proposing that option on the guitars they were selling.
Nowadays you can get one from the new line up of more affordable guitars in collaboration with Cort that has a sustainiac stock from factory, although it's around a thousand euros that's still pricy lol
You forgot the Ibanez JS 2400 series Satriani model which sports a Sustainiac. And if I recall correctly, Satch's inclusion of the Sustainiac system and his usage of it in fact predates the current resurrected popularity of the system. You can go back and check the release date of the Ibanez JS Sustainiac model to perhaps confirm this theory. And yes, it is super fun indeed! XD
Fun fact, Kerry King used to put a Fernandes Sustainer in his old BC Rich guitars, and the Dean 'earwig' Kerry King US signature has a Sustainiac.
It seems like a lot of artists like retrofitting them to their signature guitars.

Yeah he uses the sustainer in the intro & outro of Dead Skin Mask.
I remember Chris Rörland from Sabaton used to have one in one of his custom ESP 7 strings specifically just so he could have the harmonic sustains at the end of the guitar solo in "A Lifetime Of War"/"En Livstid I Krig"... but he only did it for a short while and now doesn't bother.
Robert Fripp, founder and only continuous member of King Crimson, plays a Fernandes Les Paul-style guitar with a Sustainer.
That last string snipping just... Made my soul cry.
I've got a black DK2M from 2008, the two humbuckers/maple fretboard version of this guitar. I love it! I changed the pickups for a set of SD Blackouts because I didn't like the SD Jazz on the neck. Now I'm considering re-installing the original pickups, I still have them around. I'm also considering changing the bridge for an original floyd, because the one included from factory only does it's job if you don't touch the whammy bar at all.
I have the 08 white Dk2m with the maple fretboard. I took the JB Jazz set out as well and put in Dragonfire screamers. I should get rid/ upgrade the pots. Did you do that? I read that a lot of the stock MIJ pots were not so great.
@@saltpeter7429 I think I didn't, TBH I don't remember very well, I didn't do the change myself. I did check the cavity recently and I think they are the standard pots. Changing the whole thing might be a good idea!
It's super fun to go in a good sized guitar or music store in Japan. They have some really cool stuff that you would never see anywhere else.
Some Ibanez JS guitars have Sustainiac pickups too! Was lucky to play a Chromeboy with one in, was the most fun I've had in a guitar shop before lol
I have a Schecter Helraiser Hybrid FRS with a Sustainiac and i agree completely about how much fun it is. I would also point out that the Sustaniac humbucker in the neck position has a BEAUTIFUL, warm,creamy, almost single coily sound when the sustainer is off!
Sustainiac is actually a single coil pickup, you have the ''humbucker'' version that fits to a humbucker cavity.
The Ed O’Brien strat has one. I would love to get one of these Jackson’s, though. Seems a lot of fun.
My Fernandes would stop feeding back when you lifted your fingers off the strings ,this seems perfect
Having a Sustaniac in the neck meant I could finally play that John Sykes solo for 'Is This Love' without that sustained vibrato note dying too early on me. You know the one I'm talking about.

I see everyone and their nan parrot this "fact" about how the dinky is "smaller" than the soloist; yet it's the exact same body, albeit bolt-on construction.
For real? Interesting. I have a DK2m, similar to the guitar in this video. I didnt know that it was the same size, I always resented the idea of " dinky" being Smaller. I love my Jackson. I need to upgrade the floating trem like he did, for now its blocked.

I have had just about every DK out there. I had a DK2S, sustainer was great. The stock 580 trem had the same issue as yours. I didnt have the money or interest to buy a floyd, so I sold it. Should be a JB and STK1 if stock pups.
I love my Sustainiac pickup .. don't use it a whole lot, but when I do, it is just great for times when you need that kind of thing. Pretty cool stuff!
Dinkys and Soloist bodies are actually the same size at 7/8th the size of a strat. It’s a very common misconception that only the Dinky is smaller but they both are.
I own both. Soloist is undoubtedly larger.
Weird, because I’ve owned both myself and directly compared and a buddy currently has three soloists from various eras and they’re all smaller than his 76 strat. So…
Further evidence that they are in fact the same size is they share the same official form fitted hard shell case. You can also confirm this fact by looking on the multiple posts on the JCFonline forum, or you can email Jackson directly. The Dinky and Soloist are the same size, both 7/8 the size of a strat.
@@Andrew_182 Anyone that has actual RESEARCHED Jacksons knows that Soloists are the EXACT same size as Dinkys. 100% of the time when both guitars have 24 frets.
There are exceptions when comparing some 22 fretters to 24 fretters.
I own both Dinkys and Soloists, MIJ and USA made, and as you mentioned, they ALL fit in the Jackson Soloist/Dinky case EXACTLY the same.
What's funny is: This topic was settled YEARS ago on any legit Jackson forum or facebook group, so anyone arguing CLEARLY hasn't educated themselves.
By the way....asking for info on Jacksons from Fender has proven to be a laughable experience for many, though not all.
They've even published incorrect info regarding this particular subject, as well as other things.

basically, a sustainiac system is a pickup fed into an op amp circuit and then a second pickup is used on the output
please don't snip. use the allen wrench and then roll up the strings in a coil for a rainy day. i used the same strings on my guitar for 10 years plus, recorded 7 records with them, and only had to replace a couple that broke in the middle or got too short to shuffle. didn't have money or a convenient string supplier. my low E was bald where i picked and it sounded great. old strings sound great, new strings sound like springy garbage for at least a month.

Oh man, I remember drooling over these at the music store back in a day. Ended up getting a Jackson DXMG few years later.
Have a 1992 Jackson Professional Fusion SS with the amazing Takeuchi FR bridge and the "Hotrails" bridge pickup. Fantastic guitar and was around AUD $400 or £200 new. 30 years later, neck straight, plays a treat, stock singles too. Not very many bought them back in the day and missed out.
Sustainer Pickup has a retro offering now that does the same thing as a Sustaini@c. The circuit board is quite smaller in size and a retrofit is very simple with the wiring explained and labeled. If that isn't a fit for you, you can send your guitar and have them do it. I have retrofitted 4 guitars now and really can not say enough about the ease and the customer service if an issue arises. Take a look and see for yourself what fun these pickups are. Peace ✌️

I have a sustainiac on my Hellraiser....it is the single most fun guitar I have...next to my Mockingbirb.Loved the video. Very informative and entertaining.
Kramer back in the late 80's had the FloydRose sustainer. I happen to own one. It haas been upgraded to the sustainiac with a EMG81 at the bridge!! Very fun to play with.
I love my Schecter Apocalypse 7 string with a Floyd Rose and Sustainiac in Red Reign. So much fun!!!
I liked it so much that I picked up a Boss FB-2 Feedbacker/Booster so I can do similar things with my other guitars.
And, contrary to popular opinion, it's not just for 80s metal; the Sustainiac (and the FB-2) sounds good clean to get that Smashing Pumpkins, or Muse, or Radiohead, or etc. etc. etc. (My Bloody Valentine type sounds are amazing played clean with a sustainiac or FB-2!), lush symphonic violin / e-bow sounds.
Just picked up one of these used yesterday. The one I got is a flame maple top in wine red. After seeing this video, I went on a hunt for one and found a good one with the actual Seymour Duncan pups in the bridge and middle. The "Duncan Designed" don't have a good reputation from what I have seen. I may follow your lead on the Floyd Rose bridge and maybe put a Gotoh in there to replace the Jackson one - we will see how it behaves when I get it. A couple people I talked to don't seem to have any issues, others don't like them. BTW - the bridge pickup is typically a TB4 JB model (Jeff Beck), which is still made today.
I own two MIJ Dinkys. Had to replace their tremolos with actual Floyds. Now they stay in tune flawlessly. Amazing guitars, especially with upgraded SD pickups.
Back when MusicYo was around, I bought a black Kramer Baretta for $400 that had a sustainer. I still have that guitar.
I bought a blood splattered kramer from there. Around 2000. Paid like 170 for it. Amazing guitar for the price. Even came with a d tuna
@@scottlee7458 I bought a few Strikers from there also. I had a Candy Apple Red one and a black and white Crackle w/ reverse headstock and I still have the Splatter one with the red and black paint on a white body. I added white DiMarzio pickups to it. A Breed in the bridge, ToneZone in the middle and I wanted an Evolution in the neck but they were on backorder so the guy talked me into getting a PAF PRO instead. Great guitars for $170-$190 depending on p/u configuration. I also bought a Steinberger Spirit GU Deluxe for $229. I regret selling that one because I want one again and can't find it in white and the other colors I do see for sale are all priced over $600.
I have the Jackson DK2S in black cherry that I bought brand new in 2007 iirc. Got it at the Guitar Center in OKC. It really is a great guitar. Well built and Sustaniac system is a blast to use.
I prefer reverse headstocks. There is no need to flip your hand out of playing position to tune. Fingers toward the sky all day. Just better design.
I got a Schecter Banshee Mach-7 String for my 18th birthday last year and said guitar came with a Sustaniac.
love it to bits and is now my secondary axe for Downtuned riffs and solos.
I played a les paul with a floyd rose and one of these pickups in my local guitar store a few weeks ago, it sounded so COOL

I was unaware that alot of these players played with sustaniacs. The only guy I knew for sure played them was Kenny Hickey of Type O Negative who is definitely a very big user them, so much so, that it is a staple of Type O Negatives sound. He has two signature baritone Shecter models that both come equipped with a sustaniac, really cool guitars!
I think Fender released a Strat with a Fernandes Sustainer on the neck and a Seymour Duncan JB Jr. in the bridge not too long ago, as the signature model for Ed O'Brien from Radiohead
Good stuff, you mentioned the quality of MIJ guitars, in 2020 I managed to get an RG550DX from the genesis collection reissue for £930 which I believed was a steal considering the workmanship was on a par with the Prestige models from the Hoshino Gakki workshop.
While judging a guitar by country of origin is usually a stupid thing to do, if you're going to force me I would pick an MIJ over any other

I had the chance to buy one when this was still in production and to this day I regret not buying it. I might actually pick up a second hand model at some point. Very solid instruments for sure.

Ibanez does make a couple sustainiac equipped guitars. An axiom label and a couple of joe satriani signatures have them.
Sir I have that exact same Jackson Dk-2s as you do.....AND I took your advice (sort of) and replaced the old "licensed by Floyd Rose" tremolo with (as far as I am concerned) the finest (design-wise and superior materials double locking system by "TREMOLINE" This tremolo system is unsurpassed....alleviating all of the problems inherent with the Floyd Rose system (like difficulty adjusting string saddles when setting intonation...and other issues...I simply can not overstate the materials and craftsmanship of the Tremoline system and my Dk-2s now plays like a high end custom shop guitar. Now this Tremolo was not cheap $300 but it turned a "student level" that I could only play for a short time before needing to re-tune into a pro level guitar that feels more like "neck through body construction....even better. I am so glad I tuned into you broadcast that day and was encouraged to trust that this guitar could be brought up to a "Pro" performing level. I now am considering replacing the bridge and middle pickup with something more like I use in my other stage guitars but at least I am thoroughly convinced I have a solid platform to build on...So once again thank you. PS....I know that if i were to sell this guitar I would probably not get anything near to what the going price for these is considering the upgrades....But that's just the point....Now that this plays and performs soooo well I will never have the idea that I need to sell it because..."I just don't play it that much"...Because now...I DO...AND WILL!!!!
Question for you on the Tremoline...I took a look at the product and it looks really well engineered. The only concern I have is the height of the trem block. Gotoh sells them with different height blocks as some guitars are thinner than others and therefore you don't want too tall a block or it will stick out the bottom of the guitar. It looks like the Tremoline only comes with a 33 mm block - was this a problem with this particular guitar? I know when I put a Gotoh replacement on my HM Strat, I had to get the shorter block from Gotoh.
The pickups are Seymour Duncan TB-4 JB, Classic Strat stack and the Sustainiac pickup, so it's a medium - hot setup
there is an ibanez rg axion label that has a sustaniac pick-up but i think that is the only one that ibanez has with that pickup
I have a Jackson PC1 Phil Collen signature model. It has a sustainer in it and it screams. It’s a US made beast.
DK2 did sell very well. It is one of the best-selling and most common MIJ Jacksons ever. The only downside is the Takeuchi JT-580 tremolo bridge.
They are a lot of fun, I don't use mine a lot but it always puts a smile on my face when I do use it on my Schecter Apocalypse.
I think Solar hava/had a model with a sustainiac in it? Either way would love to try one.
Bro i love my dk2!!! Best guitar I've ever purchased! I got the hot pickups though instead of the sustainiac. But I actually really like the Jackson branded floyd rose. I've heard complaints about them but mine has been stellar. And the price range is killer on these things too. Plus the satin finish on the neck make it the smoothest and fastest I've felt. Only thing is mines a little better because it's got the reverse headstock lol!
Jackson FR are great, only difference is block and in some saddles but base plate is harden SS for sure, so all Jacksons stay in tune well even JS30 old MIJ. I suppose His FR was ruined. BTW Duncan Design are imho equal to SD, it may sound strange but SD pickup import pickups and parts and that factory in Korea makes awesome pickups.
The Duncans are a STK-1 Single-Coil mid, and JB TB4 bridge

Sustaniac was originally an idea of Hamer guitars, at the same time Kramer guitars released their version , The Sustainer. The last one had 3 modes. The hamer was just on/off.
Not sure where you got the fact that the MIJ DK2 didn't sell well, they are pretty common AFAIK. And it's great because these are truly fantastic guitars IMO as were the MIJ Jacksons of that era. I own 2 DK2L myself (the lefty version) and I love them to death, the first one was my first good electric guitar. And yes they need a better floyd to be really enjoyed but given their prices used (and even new, I bought mine 650e in 2008) they are one of the best bargains available and I'd pick a third one in a pinch. And I'm not the only one either, the other guitarist in my band swears by japanese Jacksons and uses two of his modded DK2 with us both in live and studio. I did in the past too even though I now almost exclusively use my ESPs but they still get played at home. Get them while you still can at affordable prices!
Yeah, DK2's probably outsold other shapes in the pro series by a bit. RR's probably second place.
Steve Hackett (of Genesis) famously has them in his Japanese Les Paul copies. Check out his version of "All Along The Watchtower" to hear it in action. He's quite creative with it.

I just got a 2003 Jackson MIJ DK2 in Eerie Dess Swirl and been thinking of upgrades and this gave me some good ideas. Fantastic guitar!
PS...I was wondering if you have gone inside your sustain-circuit board compartment and made any "fine tune" adjustments to the trim pots that tweak your Sustainiac performance?

Satriani has sustainers in his Ibanez's. Neal Schon uses them a lot in PRS guitars. Santana used them quite a bit. I think Guthrie Govan uses them sometimes as well.
Dinkies are NOT 10% smaller than Soloists - this is a long told myth.
In fact, Dinkies and Soloists are exactly the same size.
There's a tonne of misinformation circulating about "Dinkies being 7/8ths the size of a Soloist " - but in truth they are both the same size.
They are both 7/8ths the size of a Fender Strat.
Actual differences are usually : Soloist is a neck thru construction, Dinky is bolt on.
Also Dinkies tend to have the thinner, shreddier necks.
Soloists are more often mahogany too. ( body wings)
I've got a Dinky (Charvel)...but a Soloist is my next (Xmas). Hope to get one with a sustainiac.
oh| Those satin finish hardware on Jacksons!!! bring old memories when I went to guitar store in a particular year 2000 ish haha. I wasn't a fan of them and I was wondering if I would see one one day haha, it just do :)
The Signature Strat for the guy in Radiohead has a sustainer in it. They look like A LOT of fun!

I had the Jackson PC 1. I thought all electrics were pretty much the same.
Not in this case. Loved the sustainiac pup, but being a trop rock strummer, this guitar just wasn't made for me. I sold it forward after a couple months.
But love Phil and Leopard. I just can't play it!
I want a PC-1 fairly bad. But, I would have no use for a "Sustaniac" as well. Unless I go all Tom Morello and try and be innovative or something, others have taken that lonely road before...
I have one of these that the previous owner had the sustainiac switched to the middle position and he had a sd lil 59 put in the neck and it all still works including all the sustainiac electronics!

I have TWO DK2S guitars. One is "Steve Vai" branded on the truss rod cover. My favourite has a DiMarzio X2N in the bridge...

I have a blue one. Got it cheap as the sustainiac pickup had come apart. I repaired it as best as possible. I think the stock bridge is problematic as well. What is the best replacement bridge the will fit without modifications?

I'm probably gonna be called all sorts of names for bringing this band up but I don't care. The guitar player for Black Veil Brides' signature guitar has a Sustaniac and on their song Shadows Die, right before the final chorus, he does some Tim Burton spooky phase-shifting stuff that sounds really cool
I use an EBow when I want to controll my sustain. Its a little tricky to get into but when you get the feel of it, you can have as long sustain you want.

I've wanted one of these Jacksons for a very long time. I've already got a Fernandes 7 string with a sustainer installed and it's pretty cool I'd just prefer it in a 6 string.
the fender ed o Brien (radiohead) signature Strat has a Fernandez sustainer build in, and is still for sale, also Ibanez have a couple of models with a sustainiac (satriani and one or two others)
The bridge pup sounds and looks like a Duncan Distortion. The flat poles on Distortions are a little more narrow than those on other Duncans and if you see a Duncan on a Jackson it's likely a JB or Distortion. I'd bet this is a Distortion.

I love my Manson MA-2 EVO with its Sustainiac. It's a great sounding pickup in its own right, too - great for Tom Morello-esque riffs and glassy cleans.
