Hello everybody!
Dave Abbruzzese here...
Wow, Andrew... I am honored and humbled by your kind words about my playing. I wanted to let you know about my influences and approach to drumming. I was fortunate enough to be cutting my self taught drummer teeth during an amazing time in music. When my mom found me an old close and play, single speaker 45 rpm record player with a copy of the Beatles single Birthday in it, that was my start. I instantly began what was, and still is my process for learning. Visualization. At this time it was the greats such as Ringo, Hal Blaine, Steve Gadd that were playing on my father's Barracuda car stereo. Add to that the age that I started going to live music shows. Bands like Ted Nugent (Cliff Davies), AC/DC (Phil Rudd), Triumph (Gil Moore) Thin Lizzy (Brian Downy). Lynyrd Skynyrd (Artimus Pyle) Judas Priest (Dave Holland) Riot (Sandy Slaven) Tommy Aldridge ...these were the first shows and drummers that I saw live. Between the ages of 10 and 14.

Steve Smith with Journey. Stan Lynch with T.P. and the Heartbreakers. Wow!
I was listening to the great K104 ,too! That station played all the pre-rap music funk and turned me on to the great groove bands like Cameo, Chic, James Brown, The Ohio Players, p-Funk, etc. Then as I got older I discovered the Frank Zappa catalog which in my humble opinion should be a required listening course for anyone that wants to experience musical drumming.
I was never a punk rock guy. I liked great musical rock such as Boston, Kiss, Foghat, Supertramp, 38 Special, Rush, Zeppelin, etc...
Every drummer of that era had their own special greasiness.
It was created by their ability to play melodically within a song. To dance inside the music while simultaneously driving the groove, and provide little surprise and gems that only they gave their music.
My approach to drumming comes naturally, but that isn't to say that I don't work.
I work very hard on the arrangements and always have a purposeful approach to the music that I am playing. That being said, I focus primarily on playing for the song. I always ask myself what it is that I can do for the song. What will make it work for me as a listener having an experience. I don't consider what the song will do for me as a drummer. Rather, what can I as a drummer do for the song.
That question, or more importantly the fact that I still find the answer, is why I continue to be a drummer. When I find that I have no more interest or ability to feel that I can contribute to the music , that is when I will stop playing drums.
I will forever be a drummer. That I was born a drummer is the only way that I can explain to myself why it is that drumming has always been a part of my life experience.
As for the type of drummer I am? I don't know. In the studio and rehearsal setting, I react to the music that I am a part of. Live, I react to the give and take of the players and the audience within the frame of the music.
I agree that Pearl Jam 1991-1994 was probably one of the most intense and physical live experiences I have ever witnessed. It was a straight powerhouse on fire. One that will never be equaled to the same degree. The music, the energy, the fans, the crew. The time.
Powerful and creative.
I am proud to have played a part of the soundtrack that inspired so many. I wanted to be a successful drummer. Being self taught, that meant one thing to me.
I wanted to inspire people.
Inspire people to dance, to sing along, to air jam, to pound on the steering wheel, to turn it up and drive fast, and to beat the shit out of their drum set in their teenage bedroom like I did.
...hoping I would never have to stop dreaming.
I am so grateful that I have never had to stop dreaming.

A lot of musicians say they play to the song. You absolutely do, elevating the music every time. You have that Bonham/Harrison/Brzezicki/Jordan kick & snare anchor and weight that infuses so much energy into the music.
The Zappa catalog is the Parthenon for sure. I’ve been playing drums since I was a kid, played in some great Seattle bands, and when I met you I saw what was missing in my playing. Colaiuta calls it maintaining the flow. Yet the playing is the product of the being, and you have an unparalleled sense of flow as a person and as a player. 🙌🏻

Thanks, Andrew! I look forward to hearing your thoughts, as always! I did this play through on a whim. I was working on tracks for the upcoming album for Adriana Macdonald and had been up all night due to my excitement for getting behind the kit and tracking one of her songs that I was particularly excited about. I decided to blow off getting a full night's sleep and instead went into the studio at an obscenely early time. I sat behind the kit and decided to dust the cobwebs off by playing through this song that I haven't played in over 20 years.
This is a one and done performance of Go. I have been asked to do this kind of thing by many people over the years. I will be doing more. There are so many drum tracks for artists other than Pearl Jan that I am going to be proud to share!

Dave is one of the drummers that shaped me the most as a musician. The MTV unplugged concert was my turning point. I had never seen anyone play with such fluid and yet powerful movements. I remember watching it with the sound off and it didn´t matter because I just wanted to see how he did that.

Matt is a force of nature but I'm with you on this one...Dave was my favorite when it comes to PJ. Onward and Upward!

Agreed. Matt's style doesn't really fit the classic era tunes, but the songs that are written in his style (Binaural-on) he always nails.
Matt is an absolutely amazing drummer! But Pearl Jam with Dave was so much better. Not even sure why really. It's just something that Dave possesses that I can't pin down. Dave is just so powerful and groovy, it can't be explained. Vs. is the best Pearl Jam album in my opinion.
@@swamprabbit66 I think it comes down to the rhythmic base of classic Pearl Jam being so much simpler than Soundgarden, Dave is especially adept at adding "coloring" and "flourishes" to basic rock backbeats, but Matt's style is geared towards holding down odd metered, heavily syncopated songs with precision.
I must confess I'm a bit stuck for words on this one. Dave Abbruzzese is a bit of a hero of mine.
I really wanted to get into the forward momentum he creates by way of his time feel. Similar to Bonham.
The feel of forward momentum without rushing... Very difficult to get that feel.

He has always had feel, power, and technique. Love his playing and his style. Awesome choice!
I find that it is the intent that provides the feeling of momentum. If the song wants me to drive it fast then I find myself hitting the instrument with that intention of movement within the stroke. Snappy, crisp movements. If a song needs more solid pocket feel, I find myself sinking into the instrument more. Swinging for the floor.
Then there are the subtleties that took years to master... Pushing the kick and hats while keeping the snare on the click. Pushing into the tempo just a little bit on the cymbal hits to create the illusion of tension within the pocket without speeding up.
Laying back on the ghost notes while maintaining the pocket on the kick a snare hits.
There are many subtle variances that contribute to the feel of a song. I think the key to understanding how to manage and manipulate these variances comes only from having the experience and then the confidence to get outside of yourself while playing so that you can actually hear what you're playing as you're playing it.
Dave's right foot is flat out one of the fastest I've ever heard after Bonham. There is a nuclear explosion loaded in every kick drum strike. I /adore/ the way Dave uses asynchronous cymbal washes to help push momentum. Just that quick almost ghost note cymbal wash before the "big" hit. Off the splashes, off the hi-hats, off a crash, then WHAM, full crash.
I was at this show at the Mural Amphitheater show in Seattle which was his first performance and we walked away floored with how much he literally changed the power of their music. Dave, thank you, for ALL your work.

Power, precision, tasteful, effortless and fluent. His playing is not only pleasing to the ear but also a pure delight to watch. PJ unplugged is the perfect example. Dave went beast mode at the VMA’s performing Animal, his kit almost collapses under the strain. Keep on rocking Dave!!

I was lucky enough to see Dave play with PJ across several tours. He's always been a big influence on me. It's also been hugely disappointing to see how he was treated.

Nobody plays cymbals like DA. 'Breath' on the Singles OST is a masterclass in drumming, but the way Dave plays cymbals is unreal. Such a clever, musical approach to drums - not just hitting and getting through, but properly 'playing'. One of my all time favourites, for real.

Best Pearl Jam drummer. Insane that he has the same energy and dynamics 30 years later. I’m with you, not the biggest Pearl Jam fan but my favorite albums from them had Dave on drums. Not a coincidence. My first time seeing PJ was on an MTV video awards show. They played Jeremy and he was a BEAST. Thanks for showing the love and respect to this amazing artist.

I think it's obvious they didn't know what they had with Dave. We all know the stories about the personality issues at the time and only the guys themselves can talk to that and maybe that was / is something that couldn't and cannot be resolved, but musically they dropped the ball big time. I am a lifelong fan of the band but for sure it wasn't the same after Dave, and I love the Jack Iron's era too, they played interesting stuff and Jack's sound and feel is excellent but it was just never the same after Dave. Matt Cameron in Soundgarden is perfect, in PJ it's not really for me. It was wonderful to see Dave play with that amount of fire, the same amount of fire as always, in the Go video. Long may he run.
This performance is relentless in intensity, creativity and groove. Love it!

Dave Abbruzzese was a huge influence on me as a drummer..from how I set up my kit to my playing "style". I did get to see him play live in late 93 on the VS tour. I was fixated on him the whole show, I literally didnt pay attention to anyone else in the band. He had sooo much energy and was just killing it from start to finish. He is by far the best drummer PJ ever had, they were STUPID to fire him. Thank you Andrew Rooney for doing this review.
Dave brought groove, energy, passion and an attitude PJ never got back and never will. Let them protest global warming or something cause music ain't coming from that band anymore

He was among my main inspirations as a drum crazed teenager. His sound and style made pearl jam come alive. After his dismissal they lost pretty much all of the sound and drive. Criminal how he was treated... Great to see him still playing!!!!

Dave A. is my favorite Pearl Jam drummer and Pearl Jam is my favorite band. Loved them since 1995. I was 15 when I discovered them. Go is still amazing and I listen to it often. I love all Pearl Jam records.

I fully agree with you on Appetite for Destruction and the 1st two Pearl Jam records. The both have the perfect mix of Classic rock, punk and a bit soul. It just has such a drive, weight and punch. It also is very basic as in still serving the song, no hit out of place.
I've watched Pearl Jam Unplugged _so many times_ through the years. no joke, I probably watched it a hundred times during the 90s.. The drumming Dave did on that gig was an absolute masterpiece. Porch unplugged is one of the most energetic performances I have ever seen. Absolutely fricken flawless.
The drums sounded gorgeous. I'm still in love with the sound of that china and those splashes. And the toms.. And snare... and kick.. It was 90s grunge goodness at its most perfect. Not too loud, not too quiet, peeerfect.
People who have not seen Pearl Jam Unplugged, correct that. Watch it. It's incredibly good. Black is another incredible song from the Unplugged performance where Dave just accentuates the perfect moments of the song by doing short drops. Like before Eddie goes Whyyyy? That little short stop adds soooo much intensity to the words. Like the whole song is drawing a breath.
Go watch Pearl Jam Unplugged. It's why I became a drummer back in the day, seeing how much energy Dave added to songs inspired me in a big way.
Dave Abbruzzese is a amazing drummer!! 🥁 Many of my favorite Pearl Jam concert i love to watched is 1991-1994 i love PJ first 3 albums!! Dave is one of my favorite drummers! The one thing is i still love Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder their my favorite band on this planet!! Dave really did deserve to be in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Krusen is my favorite of the PJ drummers, but Abbruzzese is an undeniable, absolute beast.

I was in 10th of 11th grade when that VS album came out, and I wore that fucking tape right out playing along to those songa. He even got me to try a coated Emperor on my snare.
Krusen was great. Watching him play tho is beyond strange. The guys wrists don’t move. He looks like he doesn’t have a clue what his arms are doing. But he was notably a soft drummer. Dave A was and is more versatile imho

Dave has always been my main inspiration and biggest influence. When seeing him play is exactly how I feel when I’m playing (obviously not at his level): lot of joy, happiness, dynamic, drive …
His timing, consistency, power, confidence, dynamics, technique, sound … is just on a different level.

Pearl Jam lost the plot when they fired Dave. Given the hindsight we have now of the direction the band has taken in the past few decades, I think he would've moved on eventually. But we were deprived a good 2 or 3 extra albums with him behind the drums when he was so abruptly let go in 1994. It was a completely unforced error that reduced the length of the band's peak period, and we can only speculate on what might've been.
Totally agree on this: Pearl Jam was never the same band after Dave left. They lost their groove and soul and became an average band that fans still love because of their early days. Listening to Even Flow live today, no groove, no swing... and it's like that for all the rest of the old repertoire.
I remember listening to no code in the record store after I heard of the firing and I can't remember being more disappointed by an album at that point in my young life.
@@theadamblock same reaction for me. That was the begining of the end for Pearl Jam. They started living on their reputation at that time and became an average band at best
💯 but Jack was a good drummer and obvious Matt is an awesome fucking drummer, but he's a better fit for soundgarden. Also, neither Jack nor Matt doesn't do that drum fill in this song when they would play it live. Dave just made Pearl Jam sound more crisp if that even makes sense.
I loved Dave’s drummer. Crazy they let him go. I guess they thought he was too much into fame and fortune. I think another major contributor to Pearl Jam’s departure from peak period is when Eddie vedder told stone that he will be writing all the songs now. Stone and Jeff were what made Pearl Jam’s songs so special. Eddie. Oh Eddie.
Dave is a musical genius. Better yet, dude's a peach of a guy!

PJ dropped the ball with Dave, he's the best drummer they ever had, his style fits them perfectly, no hate to Cameron, he is a beast but his style is still too Soundgarden-ish for Pearl Jam

Right there with you for the SNL rearviewmirror video. I remember seeing that 30 odd years ago and was just blown away by his presence. The shots showing Ed looking all sullen and being tortured artist guy with Dave grinning from ear to ear behind him showcased 2 dudes so far apart in their outlooks. He plays the drums like he's breathing and the air is the crispest mountain air you could imagine. When they fired him I never bought another one of their records. The Five against one Pearl Jam biography book paints Ed in a damning light over the way Dave was treated with the firing.
I have said it a few times, but Dave's playing in MTV's Unplugged was on a different planet. I place bass but that performance has always made me want to be a drummer.
I was 15 16 years old when Pearl Jam hit the scene and you are completely correct his drumming changed my view of how I played the drums instantly. The guy will always be one of my all-time favorites he shaped my sound as a drummer

Phenomenal drummer. Can I add that he is also a treat to watch? His motion is sooooo smooth, natural and fluid, soooo elegant yet soooo heavy and punchy when needed, soooo much part of the pleasure in seeing him live. Simply phenomenal. The best PJ ever got and will ever have.
Dave has something special and unique in his playing. I’ve never been into PJ either, but will listen to anything with Dave. He was a customer of ours in Seattle. One of the sweetest guys you’ll ever meet.

Immediate smile on my face. I miss this in Pearl Jam. Matt is a great drummer especially with Soundgarden. But Dave just has that punch that I miss in Pearl Jam.
One of the things that inspires me most about Dave is his handling of the cymbals. In many songs, they all move at the same time, in total harmony, I have seen that with very very few drummers... Dave is a genius who deserves much more recognition than he has been given.
Dave is one of the great, but shamefully undersung, drummers of the era. His playing hit me like a truck from the first time I heard PJ when they hit the scene. Crisp and energetic. Dave and Sean Kinney are the prime representatives of the hard rock of the era. Matt Cameron is a fast follower after those two. Sean is the king of the genre and Dave is right on his tail. Eddie Vedder is, conversely, one of the preeminent and greatest dbags of the era and Dave was entirely punked. I quit PJ when Dave was sacked and we started hearing Ed’s dbaggery. F that guy and his weak bandmates who yield to his dbaggery.

(Wasnt a huge PJ fan either, however much respect for their contributions to rock music, of course).

Great video! Dave Abbruzzese does an excellent job mimicking the drumming of Dave Krusen’s recording on Ten. DA and Steven Adler are also a huge part of why I started playing drums like yourself. That quick break "interlude" around 4mins where he does a series of fills, is one of my favorite moments in drumming. The 3rd beats dual sticks just smack dab in the middle of it, is just wildly perfectly placed while being different from the entire rest of the songs beat signature. & YES! Rearview Mirror live on SNL I just could never believe the Animal behind the drumset was demanding my attention over EVERYTHING else that PJ was bringing to that stage. Remarkable player. "Lightning in a bottle".

The rest of Pearl Jam would be on nebulisers after playing with Dave nowadays. Matt suits Soundgarden better than PJ and has done nothing that stands up to what Dave contributed. Just listen to Animal, he doesn't even attempt to play what Dave does during the last verse.
elegance, finesse, and above all neatness and seriousness of pulse, this makes him without a doubt the best drummer in this world in his style.

I saw him play with Peral Jam in 1994 in Boston, just a couple of days after Kurt Cobain died. An amazing gig and the drumming was phenominal. He is an absolute powerhouse drummer.

You're not crazy. I think a legion of Pearl Jam fans have the same listener trajectory as you, Ten + Versus +..., and that's because of this drummer.

Remember, the drummer who did Ten was another guy, also a fantastic drummer. Pearl Jam started with an awesome one, got an amazing one and then back to a great one. Cameron just doesn't have the intensity of the first two. And he plays everything so fast... given to fly is played like 20bpm faster..
I still love Pearl Jam though. Fantastic band to this day.

I was a fan of Pearl Jam’s album rear view mirror. Listen to the radio station called KATT here in Oklahoma turned me on to Pearl Jam. This drummer inspired me. I play a lot of air drums. When I here Dave play, I can’t help but to start air drumming! Great video Andrew!

Yeah in terms of groove and feel keeping dynamics consistent and powerful Dave was one of the best of that era up there in influence on my playing with Matt Cameron, Zack Barocas (Jawbox), Mac McNeilly (The Jesus Lizard), Todd Trainer (Shellac), and Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth).
They all served the song first but used time signature changes, dynamic shifts and other flourishes in different ways to add elements without losing the basic groove that drove the songs forward.
That era beat the final excesses out of me in a good way as a player, shedding the prog rock legacy that inspired me to take up drumming, but was often very self serving at the same time in unskilled hands compositionally. Bill Bruford I was not and never really wanted to be.

I had no idea how big of an influence he was to me until years later but when I did it made everything make sense. I felt like I found the connection between Ringo from the Beatles and Henry Ranta from soilwork.
There is a myth amongst frontmen where they think drummers are replaceable. This was a very big mistake on Pearl Jam‘s part. Dave was responsible for the sound of the album that made them famous. Ten was a great album but the unplugged version of that album is what made them skyrocket. Dave was a standout in that band.
