I'm surprised as just a fun fact that it wasn't mentioned why Roosevelt's head is so far back and turned. They screwed up and had to sort of start over by going deeper into the mountain.
gotta get the best president right
"It was never about the money. We just want our land back..."
That just broke my heart :(
And now you have some insight into why "reservations" are such pits of despairs as they are.
Wow legit
Every-time Adam brings up Native Americans I feel like I just got punched
HAHaha Hyena Try taking amazing Oklahoma history course. Trail of Tears, Indian Removal, Indian Schools, the Osage Murders. After the Civil War all of the tribes in Indian Territory had to give up half their land holdings (except the Seminole who lost all of their land and started residing with the Creeks).
Which Indian tribe do you intend to give the land back to ? The Indians were at war with on another, and seizing land from one another, for hundreds of years before European Settlers arrived.

To add on to this, Borglum was an active member of the Ku Klux Klan and his previous work was the Confederate memorial in Stone Mountain.
@@quarters-eye8922 Your logic is wholly ridiculous. Six Grandfathers Mountain (the mountain's original name) was part of Lakota territory for as long as the United States has been around. By your logic we have no more claim to the original 13 states than they do to their land. It was part of the Great Sioux Reservation that the US guaranteed the Lakota, Arapaho, Cheyenne, Crow and other tribes when they first drew up the treaty in 1868. It was supposed to exempt the entire Black Hills region from White Settlement forever, along with much of what is now South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska and Montana. The treaty stated the land was for the "absolute and undisturbed use of occupation of the Indians". This was supposed to be enforced forever and punish anyone who broke the terms. Then they found gold in the region and the US broke that treaty and stole about 9 million acres of land, forcefully relocating the Lakota to make way for prospectors and settlers. This came to a head in 1890 during the Wounded Knee Massacre, wherein over 200 Lakota, most of them women and children were murdered by the US military during a peaceful religious ceremony
Also this is an actual quote from Borglum, the sculptor:
“I would not trust an Indian, off-hand, 9 out of 10, where I would not trust a white man 1 out of 10.”
He also wrote in letters about how believed a "Mongrel Horde" was overrunning the "Nordic" purity of the West.
So there you go, Mount Rushmore was built by a member of the KKK on stolen land for the purpose of creating a tourist trap. It had no significance to the United States prior to its construction, so It's essentially just a patriotic looking version of those World's Biggest Balls of Twine that are all over Middle America except that it happens to have been created by blasting apart a sacred location, like if you bulldozed the Vatican to put up a Minimall.
@@quarters-eye8922 so you went from Rushmore to Antifa and BLM? So Im guessing you yourself dont see the pseudo logic you used to defend your argument? Rushmore is not connected to BLM or Antifa ... Indians fighting over land in America is correct but it does not justify broken treaties and mistreatment.

Lavyn O He's amazing honestly
Lavyn O Roosevelt did more for the US than Adam ever will.

Theodore Roosevelt was known as being one of the kindest presidents of all time. He went out of his way to remember every person he met by name. That is why he is in the monument he was loved by most. It was not just because he knew the sculpter.
Not to mention the national parks
And pretty tough. The Vice President Thomas. R. Marshall said when Roosevelt died, “Death had to take Roosevelt sleeping, for if he had been awake, there would have been a fight.”
well the guy was a badass, remember he got shot and decided to shrug it off and continue with his speech, however we should genuinely give back the land like geez, c'mon do it. bet you won't
Would y'all still feel that way if you found out the man did some shady double dealings with the French just to make the Panama canal?
@Ace_of_the_Chaos_Element With how much we are in national debt, the native Americans left to inherit that money may try and take it to buy their land back. If the succeed I know the first thing they will do is destroy Rushmore.
"custerfluck"
Nice pun. And a Pretty damn creative way around the censors there, Adam
The best part is looking the other direction, as people walk onto the viewing area the emotional range is wonderful.
Interesting fact: Roosevelt's voice was actually quite high. He had asthma and a series of infections as a child that caused serious damage to his respiratory system and vocal chords.
Roosevelt and Lincoln are sharing an intimate moment at 2:12 while Washington and Jefferson pretend not to notice. It's actually kind of sweet.

Oh come on Adam! Besides being a total badass Roosevelt is famous for enacting conservation of natural resources, inspection of food and drugs, heck he even managed to lower inflation, I could keep going but I'm not. Did you seriously make him look unworthy of fame by pointing out he was friends with the Sculptor because you seriously didn't want to waste time talking about what he was famous for? Despite mount Rushmore's controversial history Teddy definitely deserves to have his face up there with the other three.
It doesn't fit his mentally defective agenda.
alphaghoul The problem was that TR was still alive and even at the time the move was politically rife with controversy. I think Obama was a great president, and a lot of people think he was good and historically important, but can you imagine if someone tried to put his head on Mount Rushmore? Or Reagan or Bush?

Actually I think Teddy deserves to be there, he was a great President.
aside from the legend and life story of the man what did he accomplish as president. I ask as a brit who was not taught about American presidents
He has a pretty badass story where he rounded up his own troops and took down some opposing forces. Idk all the super exact details
Tony Marshall founded the food and drug administration. Was shot at a failed assassination attempt and continued to give the speech before receiving medical aid. Founded countless national parks and heavily pushed for conservationism. Won against the spanish in the Spanish american war. he was one of americas best presidents. but only really known by people that know american history. he also broke apart countless monopolies at the time. as well as built the panama canal. and when i say beat the spanish. i mean he was actually fighting with his famous rough riders. not some armchair general.
@@tonymarshall3978 Roosevelt was integral to the early National Parks system. And that is why he is included. First President, then Manifest Destiny, then Preserved the Union, then National Parks.
@@robertharris6092 the panama canal is partially true. While Roosevelt had a hand in it. It was actually William Taft that oversaw the project due to Roosevelt having other projects at the time

Actually, after Borglum died, his son Lincoln (apt I know) finished up the heads in 1941, but they had to stop immediately afterwards because they lacked funding.
No, no, no. There's a hidden theme here, and a clear reason why Roosevelt is on there.
Washington secured the first thirteen states.
Jefferson was responsible for the louisiana purchase, obtaining all the land east of the mississippi. Lincoln secured the whole of the south after they attempted to secede, and Roosevelt claimed the very first American colonies in the Spanish American war- Puerto Rico, Guam, etc, and he oversaw the creation of the Panama Canal, economically uniting the east and west united states.
It's a monument to America's most expansionist presidents; it's why the monument is on the west coast. It's a monument to manifest destiny.

Alarming fact: nearly 10% of Americans somehow think that the Mount Rushmore monument is a natural formation... That just happened to form in exact resemblance of 4 US presidents...
pop5678eye ....you have to be kidding me.
TDBanimefan he is kidding.
I googled that. Totally true. They even think the mountain in its chiseled form was here before the pilgrims
Best I could find was a 1994 Chicago tribune article about Cher’s ex husband saying when she was 16 she thought it was natural. And a 1999 la times article about a guy asking people dumb question he said some football player thought it was natural. Other than that and some troll message boards. I got nothing on this statistic. Give Americans at least some credit on this one guys.
I think I remember it being a joke on Family Matters. Urkel saying Waldo Faldo was so dumb that he believed Mount Rushmore was carved by lightning. I tried this joke on some of the...er, not quite brightest kids I know. With a perfectly straight face. No one fell for it. And I've tricked them with plenty of stuff before. It's just too crazy to be dumb.
lol, I was thinking "hey, that guy looks a bit like Xavier Woods", then it panned along and I was like "OMG, it's Big E", then I saw Kofi. :D :D :D
his son finished the monument after his fathers death. Read people!
Borglum wasn’t exactly friends with Roosevelt; in fact, Roosevelt had previously written off a statue Borglum made of Union general Philip Sheridan as “first-rate”. It’s possible Borglum was thanking Roosevelt for making him a household name and exhibiting his second most famous sculpture (a bust of Abraham Lincoln that is now in the Capitol) inside the White House during his term of office. Officially though, he chose the four presidents to symbolize different aspects of America, i.e. it’s birth (Washington), growth (Jefferson), development (Roosevelt), and preservation (Lincoln).
This is factually untrue
No it isn’t
If Xavier's time machine goes that far back, does that mean there's a precursor to Booty-O's *and* Derrière Squares?
"It's never about the money... We just want our land back."
These poor people.... Is that so much to ask?
Can someone explain the "cowboy rocks" bit? Is that a reference to something?
Yes, it was on stolen land. Besides the fact that most of not all of America was built on stolen land. That was an entirely different situation that had nothing to do with the building of the monument. You said it yourself they stole it for gold, not so they could specifically build something on it. That would be like me stealing my neighbors tree, moving across states, replanting it, and then my great-grandson decides one day to cut his great grandfathers tree down and make it into a desk. Do they know it was stolen? Do they care? Would they go across country to give the tree back? Probably not.
"Swedish Muppet's dearh rattle" is my new favorite term!
That cowboy rocks thing was awesome
also, why is there a missing space between FDR and Abe? its like he meant to put a head there but forgot or something
they screwed it up. They needed to rebuild the third face more deep into the mountain, but it wasn't intended. It's just a weird error, and a funny one, because the greatest national monument needed to restar a hole one fourth of the monument.
Two fun facts about Custer:
1) The only reason he gained his rank in the first place is due to the battle of Gettysburg where he led a squad of men to take out the Confederate cavalry. Problem being that he was only able to do this due to the fact they were riding uphill through an open field.
2) Custer would get his ass handed to him trying to remove the Native Americans in one of the greatest tactical fails in American history at Little Big Horn

TR was also big on the Conservation of Public Lands, and laid the groundwork for the National Park Service.
Lincoln didn’t free slaves though...
John Squatrito
Yeah.. He just made slavery in America illegal not the rest of the world.
THE DUDE not really he just didn’t want war and didn’t want slavery to come into the north
He wanted it to not spread into new states but I would still credit him for freeing slaves
1863 - Emancipation Proclamation: Free's any and all slaves in territories under the control of the Confederacy that make it to Union states or liberated by Union forces.
1865 - Pushed, against opposition in both his cabinet and party, for the 13th amendment, freeing ALL slaves in ALL territories of the United States. His support was crucial, as most of the public supported because of Lincoln himslef, rather than what the actually amendment was for.
Did Lincoln free the slaves? Well, his support was vital to the passing of the 13th amendment, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and he eased the nation into having blacks in positions of power (i.e. allowed blacks to join the army), in other words, yes and more. Sometimes the generally accepted claims of history, like this one, are true, and it's doesn't make sense to alter the facts to fit a narrative that is just plain false.
lincoln was a big rasist.only reason he banned slavery is because thats what the people inbthe north wanted, not him.but the problem was that he was trying to tell the south what to do,which they were a entirely seperate country at the time because they succeeded.slaves were a minor reason the civil war was started.but the north wasnt so squeeky clean either.they didnt need as much slaves as south because the north had factorys, not really farms.the north had all the factories run by mainly children, not huring adults that demand more pay so the children would work and be paid pennies.so thats kind of screwed up too, both north and south had slaves, just south had more, but south got rid of there slaves before the north did.and north had child labor mainly.the whole country was screwed up back then, not just the north or not just the south.but the u.s was not the only country to have slaves.every country did at one point or another, and many still do
Nice use of the New Day there. Funny.
And who the heck do you think the Sioux were? Ghandi? Heck no! They were one of the most War like tribes in America who took the Black Hills through war from another Indian tribe, the Pawnee Tribe, in the early 1800's. The Sioux massacred Men Women and Children as the conquered the Black Hills.
Then the ONLY reason the Hills weren't reconciled by the Pawnee and their allies was because the Sioux chiefs made an alliance with the US Cavalry who protected them. Then the Sioux kept massacring Pawnee hunting parties. There's a canyon in Nabraska called "Massacre Canyon" because in 1873 156 Pawnee, mostly Women and Children, were massacred by the Sioux. This was only one such massacre by the Sioux and those massacres made the Americans not like the Sioux anymore. So when gold was discovered their we just invaded, not just for the money but also because the Sioux were a violent evil tribe/culture
I'm not surprised, it was basically one jerk /the U.S government/ screwing over another jerk /the Sioux/.
Exactly!
No, we already knew they were violent. Despite this, we didn't invade prior to finding out about gold, therefore, we really only invaded for the money. We only invaded when it served our interests. We didn't do it to protect anyone or to administer some kind of justice for the Pawnee.
You view the Sioux as the bad guys, but take into consideration that it wasn't the Americans' land, nor the Europeans', to begin with. They stole Native American soil. They may have been a war-like tribe, but for good reason.
@@Javier-rl1of and you also have to consider the US took the land for good reason so they can make a monument come on now it was put to better use then some Indian owning the land he probably would have ended up losing it to a gambling issue

Natives could offer the money to descendants of Slaves for reparations. Since its not about money to them.
Fun fact, around the area of mount rushmore (not in the area but somewhat close by) a group is working on a native American sculpture that's larger than Rushmore. The sad part though is they need help. SInce the government doesn't give two hoots about helping people give something to the people that actually owned the land first they have to raise the money and hope people will help with donations. Doesn't even have to be money could just be some equipment.

Mount Rushmore is a amazing monument am I right or am I right?
One thing for sure. Gutzon Borglum had lots of guts.
"Stole native American land", the word he's looking for is "conquered". We conquered the land just like every other society in history, including natives doing the same to other natives.
Sean Macy no actually. The land is stolen. You can only conquer during a legally declared war by both parties. The usa citizens invaded and murdered the people and took everything for them. They were basically thugs in a larger scale. No good assholes with as much money as the maffia that no one dared or even wanted to say or do something about it becauee they either would get in trouble or knew they could profit from those thugs.
Sean Macy nope stole
While there is a significant difference between "stole" and "conquered" in definition and practice, it seems like a marginal difference to me, morally speaking. If it were possible to change history, I would gladly trade a shitty monument for the Sioux to have their way and keep that land.
JL I assume it's because we used to treat people who were different from us the way you (just you, JL) are now treating us. But I don't know, because I wasn't alive during that time. Half the population today wasn't alive when white people were at their most racist and now that we're trying to make equality truly equal, you (again, just specifically you, JL) just want your turn at the top, happy to live off of all the benefits of white people's malicious rise to temporary command over many of the world's most powerful countries, and stepping on us the way your ancestors were stepped on themselves because you think that's "poetic justice". An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, and if you weren't blind already, then you would know that. Luckily for humans all over the world, you're just a minority among your people. Not even really a vocal minority. Just a pathetically petty minority.
Connor Price
Actually muskets had a huge impact on the war's fought in the america's; Also most conquistador armies killed more than they lost. Just because disease killed a lot of natives doesn't mean it wasn't conquered Genghis Khan threw people with the plague over city walls to ravage them before he stormed in; He still conquered them. Natives actually either feared the white man or loved them as they conquered their in slaver's (like Inca's). They were still the weaker force than the immigrants, and barely resisted so "commandeering" is the best word to fit it. "Annexation" works too.
"Theodore Roosevelt, he really liked hunting." That's all people know about TR? He started the National Park service, broke up large Trusts, signed the Pure Food and Drug Act (Insuring that a workers chopped up limb won't end up in my meal), started construction on the Panama Canal, and was the first president to invite a black man to the White House (Booker T. Washington). Granted he did things I don't agree with like, but that's true of any president.
Really really used to enjoy this show. Unfortunately it’s becoming left leaning panhandling.
Charles Kurtz Elaborate
Your Brother he made a presidents special and said Hillary was losing just because she was a woman.
Except everything he said in this video was fact unless there's some historic fact that you know and are not sharing.
So true
Say what you really mean. you liked it until he said stuff that pissed you off. It's okay, happens all the time
As a South Dakotan, the part that bugs me the most is them bringing up North Dakota...
The word is conquered not stolen
The word is not conquered when a treaty is broken, that's why the supreme court ruled the land grab unconstitutional and why the government, acknowledging their wrongdoing, tried to compensate the Sioux.
Why not talk about "Crazy Horse"?? That would have possibly gain more support to have that monument funded and finished!!
That's one pretentious liberal agenda.
mark markson
So you don't read sources then?
I don't think op knows how to read
American History = Liberal Agenda. Makes perfect sense smfh
@@osmosis453 American history phrased in a way to propagate 'white guilt'. Phrasing means a lot, for example "Europeans stole land from the native peoples." vs "Europeans conquered land via war with native peoples.
ethan coleman did you not hear when he said that the land was given back to native after a peace treaty, but taken back after there was talk of gold. So in that sense, yes, the land was STOLEN
This is the only history channel I need lol
This was forced and contrived, couldn't watch half of it. Adam Ruins Whatever Value His Brand Had Back When He Started This Shtick.
ulysses1904
Then stop watching, simple
Yes, that's what the "couldn't watch half of it" was indicating, simple.
ulysses1904 Please elaborate. This is all factual information and he includes sources in the video
Read what I wrote, nothing about disputing facts. Forced and contrived, like Quentin Tarantino's work and late night talk show comedy and pretty much all of pop and celebrity culture. Pop culture eats its own feces and this hyper-edited video is part of the buffet.
what a nonsensical over-reaction. First off, this is a show, not an actual conversation happening IRL - actors, not regulars. For it to be contrived is kind of dumb and redundant, mainly because its obvious through its presentation, not to mention this was exactly how the show operated from start to finish, every episode.
You have to be stupid to not realise that its on purpose, to remind you that *it* *is* *a* *show* . If you don't like that, tough luck.
Literally everything pointed out here is in the Rushmore, Lincoln Borglum Museum. Seriously, the museum is facing the amphitheatre. Go right in! It says all of this in the museum. The land that belonged to the Native Americans, how it was originally suppose to be a tourist trap, Borglum's stubbornness, the vault, all of it is in the museum. The only difference between what they present as the history of the monument in the actual park, and this presentation is in the park they said it was the Lakota not the Sioux the land was taken from. They have a member of the Lakota nation talking about how the monument has been accepted by members of the Lakota because they're americans too on the audio tour in the park.
They could of gotten the money and bought there land back
Alexander The great oh well
The government wouldn't sell it. What makes you think Mount Rushmore is for sale?
Ernie I don’t I’m just saying they afford what he said 10 million or billion in today’s money to buy the land back
Kevin Rhodes I know that was a stupid move on their part
How would you feel if some people throw you out of your own home, and instead of simply returning the house, the government gave you the amount it was worth? Even if you can buy it back, don't you feel it's wrong that you had to do this just to get what was originally yours by right?
Also you contradicted yourself there: you said "I don't" but then continued acting as through it was an option for them.
