Mario has everything a metal drummer needs. He's fast, he's consistent, he can do odd times and polymeters, and he has a keen sense of dynamics. Flawless.
Technically and musically speaking, this is one of the greatest drum solos I've ever heard. The polyrhythms and odd-meter sticking techniques he pulls off are amazing. He does nothing too flashy or unnecessary and only shows his sheer prowess, in true solo fashion.
its not always about speed in metal drumming .it is also about mixing different accents with varied rhythm combination mario has shown it here...this is a piece of art...
What a legend! Mario is definitely one of the best metal drummers, up there with Tomas Haake and Derek Roddy. He may not be as fast as Derek but man, he's still damn quick and comes up with some of the best ideas. His fills and grooves are just so clean and fresh here, I can't detect a single mistake. 1:54 is by far the best bit. He makes great use of rudiments in this solo, the paradiddles in particular which is great to see. I wish I was there to see it live!
I love how he's making music right there. Too much metal drummers (or even just musicians in general) just show off technical skill during solo's. Mario doesn't. He makes a really enjoyable solo: he makes music, for he is a great musician.
I'm not a drummer, so I cannot even remotely judge whether this is technical difficult or not. But therefore, it doesn't matter to me - all I can say is that this is probably the grooviest metal-drum-solo I ever listened to.
@Jrim615 exactly, i mean if you wanted to see some crazy double bass and blast beats you could just check out a Gojira song as there's bound to be one in any song. Here we get to see Mario showcase his true talent and creativity
Im trying to figure out what pieces of the set he is hitting... Is it the edge of the small tom and the middle of the snare? Or the other way around? or both??? Im sure its paradiddles anyway xD
@Kane1881 That IS the force of Mario. He could've played blast beats and double bass drums but he's chosen originality. To me it's much more interesting. But i love "drum check" by Morbid Angel too ! :)
@cpcbs916 its more about groove, feel, expressing himself as an artist not just going flat out. He has the ability to play just about anything. if you really are a drummer then you would already know this...
mmmmmmmm polyrhythms!! We all know he can play fast, we hear it in the actual songs. A drum solo is to express that which is not done in their music, love the grooves and originality!!
@lordmorgoth7 It's because the Vieilles Charrues is not a metal festival. They feature mostly pop/rock and hit music, so Gojira was kind of an odd one there.
@DrummingAddict88 That's actually the one video I was talking about that I found that was different from the rest. But it's whatever, Mario is still an absolutely phenomenal studio drummer, I just think he lacks in live diversity.
Well considering you're a drummer I would be very interested to see what you consider to be a good drum solo. I know very little about drums, but as a lay-man Duplantier's sense of feel and the pure uniqueness of his style is what attracts me to him. So I respect your opinion, but if this isn't good then what is?
@brandonsills1983 Don't get me wrong Brandon. I really LOVE this band!!!! I was dismayed when I saw the solo because, as a drummer, I had higher expectations for this young man. He's a wonderful drummer and a great structural composer of rhythm. Some guys just aren't cut out for soloing is all. Kudos to you for being able to program drums. I know some good programmers out there! Nothing compares to a real drummer playing real drums though.
@Kane1881 he shows all of the aforementioned stuff you've said in pretty much every gojira song they do, this is just another side of mario that he gets to let loose
@Kane1881 double bass and extraodrinary speed are not all there is to drumming. metal drummers who realize this and incorperate all aspects of drumming are the only ones that really stand out. great solo btw.
@Kane1881 Who cares if he did no double bass? Every metal drummer solo is usually loaded with it, here Mario is showing off tasty chops and grooves using paradiddle rudiments. A sweet groove it much more impressive and 'musical' than a 'look how fast I am' competition.
@Epelismi this is my last comment on this video. personally, i think mario is one of the best drummers in the world, but this solo seems a little repetitive. it's not about speed for me, it's just that i would like some more variety in this ...
to be honest, I dont like your opinion, I play drums and I like them both and each of them accomplished something in music. And one thing that I learnt, there is multiple styles of playing drums and I think that Joey's fits perfect into Slipknot and Mario's into Gojira
@VladmirL Dude this is the 1st time ive heard this guy, and the first thing I thought at the end of the video was that this guy is awwsome just by his form but he couldve totally made it better n sides the feet sorta the sticking aint that fancy. Def good solo tho, but I dnt consider any solo to have a true fashion. A solo is one guy playing anything
@DrummingAddict88 Think that as you may, but seriously look for a different live drum solo from him. I went through nearly 20 videos and I only found one that was substantially different. Other than that, it's all just regurgitated. I'm in no way trying to bring down his name as a drummer, I just don't like that he plays the same solo every time.
Indeed, THIS solo is musical, interesting and just a fucking great drum solo. Jordisons solos (with Slipknot) are PART OF THE Slipknot SHOW. Especially the solo from 9.0. Jordison and Duplantier are both great drummers, with styles of their own, so yes, lets not compare.
@perryfan213 yeah i know it's hard to find an independent drummer who knows to show groove and make a cut to the rest of the band but i still prefer guys like arch enemy; listen to the drum solo from tyrants of the rising sun i think thats pretty cool :) the thing here is it is kinda looping and sounds even more boring to me than some double bass and blast beat patterns
@DjoZef Originality? I'm not trying to say that Mario is a bad drummer, don't get me wrong. He's an amazing drummer regardless of who you are. But originality is not his strong suit when it comes to his live solos. Look at EVERY OTHER live drum solo video of him on youtube. It's ALL more or less the exact same thing, just some different accentuation with the cymbals and toms here and there.
@RenegadeSoundSystem Oh what was that? Are you a member of the band or something? Who can be the one to say whether it's Mario's business to play a solo or not... He can do whatever the fuck he wants to do.
Mario has everything a metal drummer needs. He's fast, he's consistent, he can do odd times and polymeters, and he has a keen sense of dynamics.
Flawless.
It's so rare to see metal drummers with feel and dynamics in their playing. mario's chops are incredible. Respect.
Hands down this is an amazing drum solo.
I love how Mario straight up drops down the poly rhythms like hes been doing it his entire life. Hell yeah
Technically and musically speaking, this is one of the greatest drum solos I've ever heard. The polyrhythms and odd-meter sticking techniques he pulls off are amazing. He does nothing too flashy or unnecessary and only shows his sheer prowess, in true solo fashion.
this guy is the only guy who can do a drum solo without being boring to hear and watch!
I mean he's making his drumset singing!
AWESOMENESS OVER 9000
at 2:53 the cameraman is like "man, he's so awesome, so hot, so cool, so... Ooooh cymbals!"
He's snare sounds soo damn good
killer solo!
the most underrated drummer in music. so talented, so good at what he does, pure and utter raw talent
today i've almost forgotten to watch it.
Excellent time and groove!
its not always about speed in metal drumming .it is also about mixing different accents with varied rhythm combination mario has shown it here...this is a piece of art...
this gets my groove on !
amen dude...this guy is amazing!!!!!!!!!!
1:40 Pantera's 13 Steps to Nowhere
Trepanation21 Yes ! It's amazing
Holy shit it is!
Do not even try to compare Mario Duplantier and Joey Jordison...
faster does not mean better, Mario is a genius compared
BEAST!!
@DjoZef well said, alot of people need to realize that metal greatness should NEVER be measured by speed
I just watched this 5 times, no joke.
Finally!! a drummer in the house!!
man fu... the blast beat/drum sh..t this is some serous groove and creativity :DD
What a legend! Mario is definitely one of the best metal drummers, up there with Tomas Haake and Derek Roddy. He may not be as fast as Derek but man, he's still damn quick and comes up with some of the best ideas. He makes great use of rudiments in this solo, the paradiddles in particular which is great to see. I wish I was there to see it live!
Good to know there is a few people who can realise those things!
I love how he's making music right there. Too much metal drummers (or even just musicians in general) just show off technical skill during solo's. Mario doesn't. He makes a really enjoyable solo: he makes music, for he is a great musician.
well said, i totally agree haha alot of metal drum solos are all just speed and no style or flare, love mario!
I think he's the only drummer not boring on a drum solo, It's like it makes it sing
Fully Agree, I too play drums, both have their own styles and both play extremely well.
Best drummer alive!
mario makes that simple paradiddle work pretty well.
So ya I get it. Gojira is really good. Tres bien! Vous est tres magnifique ! I guess.
that ride cymbal is fucking unholy, jesus christ! guy should be every metal drummer's hero.
Indeed..
machine
@Kontaminate yeahhhh of course thats the one video you were talking about.....
Here we get to see Mario showcase his true talent and creativity
i love how in his solo he didn't even use the double kicks
Im trying to figure out what pieces of the set he is hitting... Is it the edge of the small tom and the middle of the snare? Or the other way around? or both??? Im sure its paradiddles anyway xD
4 years late but he “turned off” his snare to give it that sound. He’s ghosting on the snare and rolling on the Tom.
@mrwinslowjenkins Yeah, It absolutely does!
@Kane1881 That IS the force of Mario. He could've played blast beats and double bass drums but he's chosen originality. To me it's much more interesting. But i love "drum check" by Morbid Angel too ! :)
Tribal Death metal drumming...Goddamn
Neat
siiick
@Gojiraka Hehe, yeah. That groove sounds like 13 Steps to Nowhere by Pantera
@unbr4eakable
In live records they try to hide the crowd sound to extract the best sound from the live performance...
Wow ee Ka Zow ee ! Being a Neil Peart Fan Club Member that was a great solo; and a really great drummer.
OMG Mario is so fucking best drummer in the world!!!
I fucking love his Tom sound!!! :D
@cpcbs916 its more about groove, feel, expressing himself as an artist not just going flat out. He has the ability to play just about anything. if you really are a drummer then you would already know this...
paraparadiddle actually then paradiddlediddles! rocking the 6/8 like a bamf
Joey = Speed
Mario = Technically awesome
pattern around 1:56 is double paradiddle right ?
mmmmmmmm polyrhythms!! We all know he can play fast, we hear it in the actual songs. A drum solo is to express that which is not done in their music, love the grooves and originality!!
The shit-talkers are just mad that they weren't there to see this live.
@lordmorgoth7 It's because the Vieilles Charrues is not a metal festival. They feature mostly pop/rock and hit music, so Gojira was kind of an odd one there.
@DrummingAddict88
That's actually the one video I was talking about that I found that was different from the rest. But it's whatever, Mario is still an absolutely phenomenal studio drummer, I just think he lacks in live diversity.

Plese! post Torrent Link,i fucking want that live performance!
@DjoZef he us mucking around with paradiddles the whole time, dont get me wrong though, tis amazing
@Mtlero14 Pantera - 13 Steps To Nowhere
13 steps to nowhere, FORKIN DING DONG RIGHT, BITCHES.
this people are sou jealous. mario is the best because he play drums at his style!! please respect that!!!
Pro paradiddles ALL DAY ER DAY!
@Kontaminate yeahh you caught me
who spotted the intro of 13 steps to nowhere by pantera ? It was so epic !!
paradiddle!!
Tool - Ticks & Leeches
Yep but it's not played on the toms
@brandonsills1983 Don't get me wrong Brandon. I really LOVE this band!!!! I was dismayed when I saw the solo because, as a drummer, I had higher expectations for this young man. @Kane1881 he shows all of the aforementioned stuff you've said in pretty much every gojira song they do, this is just another side of mario that he gets to let loose
@mrbobbo666 I thought the same thing, but just sounded awesome!!
Sounds like the opening to that Pantera song 13 Steps to Nowhere.
1.38 sounds exactly like the intro to 13 steps to nowhere by pantera!
@Kane1881 double bass and extraodrinary speed are not all there is to drumming. metal drummers who realize this and incorperate all aspects of drumming are the only ones that really stand out. great solo btw.
i mean i can see why some people arent so wowed by this. but as for what is sound kind of aludes too, ie. tribal. he is damn good with it.
@mrbobbo666 That's exactly what I was thinking.
"learn your paradiddles motherfuckers"- is what this solo meant to say
true.
I don't know who Travis Barker is..
But i could watch Mario drum all day!
@mrbobbo666 spot on brother \m/
@mrbobbo666 it totally is
@Kane1881 Who cares if he did no double bass? Every metal drummer solo is usually loaded with it, here Mario is showing off tasty chops and grooves using paradiddle rudiments. A sweet groove it much more impressive and 'musical' than a 'look how fast I am' competition.

Paradiddles.... so many paradiddles
@DrummingAddict88 yeahhhhhhhhhhhh of course you're the one guy that's never going to let me have my own opinion,
to be honest, I dont like your opinion, I play drums and I like them both and each of them accomplished something in music. And one thing that I learnt, there is multiple styles of playing drums and I think that Joey's fits perfect into Slipknot and Mario's into Gojira
@cpcbs916 he's not trying to impress anyone he's just playing something he thinks sounds sick, and I also think it sounds sick.
@Kane1881 There's a lot more to drumming than speed. It's about expression.
@VladmirL Dude this is the 1st time ive heard this guy, and the first thing I thought at the end of the video was that this guy is awwsome just by his form but he couldve totally made it better n sides the feet sorta the sticking aint that fancy. @Kontaminate Alright check this one out. It shows hes an original and skilled drummer

funny shaped upside down paradiddle triangle and then some other stuff :P
@sk8tolive123 People think of grammy winners as the very best , and that pop singers are musicians.
@perryfan213 yeah i know it's hard to find an independent drummer who knows to show groove and make a cut to the rest of the band but i still prefer guys like arch enemy; listen to the drum solo from tyrants of the rising sun i think thats pretty cool :)
the thing here is it is kinda looping and sounds even more boring to me than some double bass and blast beat patterns
Reminds me a lot of Virgil Donati's playing.
@DjoZef
Originality? I'm not trying to say that Mario is a bad drummer, don't get me wrong. He's an amazing drummer regardless of who you are.
