This fuge at 13:09 is a real masterpiece for a soundtrack! 👌 And so lovely and beautifully played! I didn't even know before reading about this fuge that each instrument symbolizes one appearing character in the scene, while pointing the murder using the transverse flute in the scene when Miss Marple finds the poison strychnine, locked into a medicine safe in the sick bay: 1) The cembalo (harpsichord) symbolizes Miss Marple snooping around. 2) The violoncello starts when Captain De Courcy Rhumstone leaves his berth. 3) The transverse flute marks the appearing of Commander Breeze-Connington. This flute appears shortly again in the strychnine scene. 4) The sound of a viola starts when Matron Fanbraid leaves her berth. Sadly, the fuge stops here and doesn't play the following parts. 5) A clarinet plays when Assistant Matron Shirley Boston appears on the corridor. 6) When Commander Dimchurch enters the room, a vibraphone starts playing. The choice of instruments is worth highlighting too: 2) violoncello and 4) viola are both strings: maybe marking the hidden relationship between Captain De Courcy Rhumstone and Matron Fanbraid. 3) transverse flute and 5) clarinet are both wind instruments: maybe marking the complicity in robbery between Commander Breeze-Connington and Ass. Matron Boston. Well: a very remarkable, nice masterpiece!
I was only talking about Ron to my friend yesterday! I have all his recordings. He was asking about one of those compilation CDs that came out some years back: British Light Music - Ron Goodwin (Marco Polo). I remember buying this Label X CD when it came out. If I recall Label X was run by John Lasher - the guy who ripped off John Barry by releasing the 'Body Heat' LP, which included the Ladd Company logo (actually composed by John Williams), and then not paying anybody a penny for it.😒
Fascinating, never heard of Label X until this one came along? Bloody external cd drive has given up the ghost at last, all these themes have exhausted it......time to purchase a new one I think. In the mean time you will have to make do with the test card...;-)
I junked a load last year. 280+. Have tons more but the cheaper grade ones no longer play properly. My early tapes from the early, mid 80s are like new but later tapes from late 90s and 2000 are corrupt. Just tells you that tapes got cheaper and more inferior over time!!! Must be another 500 in garage. Some with stuff not on DVD from G+ 😉
Such lovely movements beautiful melodies ❤
Truly one of the rarest of movie theme songs.
Many thanks for posting this music much of which was lost and had to be recreated by Ron Goodwin by watching the films again. We are lucky to have it.
Yes I agree, thank goodness he recreated the sound perfectly to this classic score.

Ok - I can cope. I need a commercial break so I can get through these 500 VHS tapes over the autumn winter! Lol.
