Loved this show as a kid. I named my big dufus doggie "Manfred". It suited him to a T. The floppy ears, the lazy-esque attitude. I always referred to him as Manfred the Wonder Dog. He even liked the mailman. Everybody loved Manfred, he was a real treat.
I used to watch this after my older brothers and sisters left for school each day 😂 But alas ,there came a day when I had to go off to school and miss the Captain
The exact same situation for me I would watch captain kangaroo in the morning as my older brother and sister were off to school, but in the fall of 1960 it was off to kindergarten for me.
Oh, what fun that was! I haven't seen this since I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. These Tom Terrific cartoons were just right for children. We incorporated Crabby's name to apply to anyone we knew who was having a less-than-ideal day. We'd say, "Don't be a Crabby Appleton". Great memories. Thanks for allowing us to see Tom and Crabby again.
What a treat it is to see "Tom Terrific" again! And that evil Crabby Appleton! He's rotten to the core!!! YUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10:24: Bop! Honk! Bop! Honk! Bop! "My machine doesn't like me anymore!" "It doesn't like me!" Funny for a primitive animation show from 1956 by Gene Deitch. Lionel Wilson had a real inventive voice.
Barry I. Grauman just to let you know I saw TOM TERRIFIC on CAPTAIN KANGAROO in reruns as a kid in the 1970s. Even though this cartoon was from the 1950s.
I'm 65 and I recall this cartoon series on Captain Kangaroo on WCBS TV in NY. It makes sense that it was on that station because by this time 1957 CBS owned Terrytoons as I recall.
I was 4 or 5 when i saw these. I thought it was a great cartoon. As soon as i saw the intro i remembered it. I'm sure i watched this every single day! I did watch it every day because i watched Captain Kangaroo.
Right on, Cole... I'd forgotten those...did you guys ever have "Cap Bombs"? A cap from a cap pistol roll was torn off and inserted into metal Rocket with plunger on front end to explode cap when it hit?
That was Winky Dink that has the 'magic screen'. I remember my sister Janie sent away for it. I don't remember what it cost but I remember putting it on the TV screen and drawing what Winky told us he needed to defeat the bad guy.
Cartoons for four year olds . . . back in the Stoned Age. Paul Terry also did Heckle and Jeckle and Mighty Mouse, among other stalwarts of the times. He had quite the knack for appealing to a nascent demographic.
Looks like a low budget cartoon. The accordion was an inexpensive way of creating background music. The sound made when Tom changes into something sounds like it was made on a steel drum.
No surprise since the studio, Terrytoons always seemed to have the tightest budget among the studios that released theatrical animated shorts. Especially when CBS took over ownership.
Tom Seaver was nicknamed Tom Terrific after this cartoon. Now Cheating Shady Brady wants to copyright "Tom Terrific" as his moniker for merchandising reasons despite the fact that Seaver will always be rightfully known by that name. But legally, can that asshole Brady copyright this name when it's already a copyrighted cartoon??
When I was watching this when it first aired, I was likely impressed by the animation. Now, as an adult, I'm thinking to myself "geez, that animation is crude and pretty awful".

1959 i was 5 and wore a funnel on my head like tom!😊
I loved Tom Terrific! My mother called me Crabby Appleton when I was in a sour mood.
Mine too!!!
I remember having to give up watching these cartoons weekday mornings when I had to go school for the first time.

I was just four or five when I watched Tom terrific on captain kangaroo I still love that cartoon thanks for the memories debra Jane Lerner
I always loved the minimalist approach to animation this show took. One of my favorite cartoons of all time.
I was 6 when it first aired (1957). I remember enjoying it.
Being my first name is Tom, probably helped endear it to me.
Thanks fot Tom Terrific. It was really great to watch Tom, Manfred & ol' Crabby Appleton again.
What a great cartoon. So awesome in its simplicity. They were the Finn and Jake of their day.👨🏻🦳🐕

greg chick Me too; I’m fixing to turn 61 in 5 weeks so I was a 50s baby and a 60s kid
I am in my early 20s and I first saw Tom Terrific in Finn and Jake’s Deathbed.
Accordion, Banjo and a dog on Quaaludes. Welcome to the new frontier.
Geez. I remember watching these on TV when I was quite a little kid!
I grew up in NYC during the later 1960's. I wish they had shown this! Loved it thanks!
I grew up in NYC and thats where I saw it as a kid 1953 -1957
This used to be on the CAPTAIN KANGAROO SHOW.
And each episode unfolded as a five-part serialized story.
Barry I. Grauman just to let you know I saw TOM TERRIFIC on CAPTAIN KANGAROO in reruns as a kid in the 1970s. Even though this cartoon was from the 1950s.
I first saw Tom Terrific on Captain Kangaroo in the 1950s and I was glad that my youngest brother saw them again in the 1970s.
Well good for you and your brother. I bet he was the same age as I was.
To quote another Terrytoons TV character, "It's possible! It's possible!" (Seriously,he was 8/9 years old when we saw CK was rerunning Tom Terrific.)
Brings joy to my heart to see this cartoon again; off now to search for BunBun!
I'm 65 and I recall this cartoon series on Captain Kangaroo on WCBS TV in NY. It makes sense that it was on that station because by this time 1957 CBS owned Terrytoons as I recall.
I guess you remember Mighty Mouse, which is older than I am.
I just turned ????????? LOLOLOL.
Crabby Appleton bears a striking resemblance to Simon Bar Sinister.
Was thinking the same thing. Simon was probably more psychotic though.
The two people who voted this down have hearts darker than Crabby Appleton's!
Those who voted or down probably don’t even know what this cartoon is and are comparing it to the crap kids see now.
.. aw, some people don't know what's GOOD- that's all-(!)
Thanks for posting; hadn't seen this since I was a kid watching the Captain Kangaroo show
Thanks for the memory. The lapses and logic we were willing to overlook when you are a kid.
"Kids eat too much ice cream anyway"... lol see, Crabby Appleton was a good guy, he was just trying to improve the health of children!
THEN BECAME A FANTASTIC BAND, THE DRUMMER WAS CRISP AS IT GETS.go back, try, kathryn.
Oh Brother..Will"Crabby Appleton"ever learn..not to mess around with these two heroes?
This part makes me laugh😂🤣 at 10:23 - 10:29
Along with Crabby Appleton crying and throwing a tantrum, Also makes me laugh😂🤣 at 10:31 - 10:39
So this is what the voice of Eustace from Courage the Cowardly Dog sounded like when he was younger.
Yes that was Lionel Wilson doing Tom Terrific's voice before becoming Eustace Bagge from Courage The Cowardly Dog.
MCMLVII...wow 1957, my little brother was born...
I was 4 or 5 when i saw these. I thought it was a great cartoon. As soon as i saw the intro i remembered it. I'm sure i watched this every single day! I did watch it every day because i watched Captain Kangaroo.
...it has been about 60 years since I last saw this cartoon- although I don't remember THIS particular episode...(!)
Crabby appleton rotten to the core😂 I just had to see this again
I loved Tommy, Clutch Cargo, Jonny Quest. I wish i could go back to those days just for a day or so oh yeah can't forget Popeye 😊
Mighty Man fredon Tom Terrific going to feed the world with that one little Pearl good luck mr. Tom Terrific
so THAT'S where the band got their name!
I know, right, "Go Back"!
I like this,and I'm not crabby at all.😆
I remember you could also buy an erasable clear piece of drawing material and put it over the screen and help draw what the character became.
Right on, Cole... I'd forgotten those...did you guys ever have "Cap Bombs"? A cap from a cap pistol roll was torn off and inserted into metal Rocket with plunger on front end to explode cap when it hit?

@@johnkirchman3811 You are right. There was also Captain Bleep from the planet Zero with his side kicks the Caveman and the wooden puppet boy.
First time I've ever saw this. Didn't know Sponge Bob had ancestors. :)

Is TOM TERRIFIC on DVD anywhere? He's a treasure.
We always called the yolk from a hard boiled egg our Crabby Appleton pill😂
Holy-oke Massachusetts!
I am very surprised to discover that an accordion was used in this cartoon

Coooooooool
Stupid Dog, making Tom look bad
3:17 Crabby Appleton wrote the DemoncRAT's theme song.
You're so funny. Not
"Man the afterpoop?"
...
...what did I just watch.
Uh, that pepper would have just floated to the surface.
Uh.....it’s a cartoon, not a science experiment.
2016 wow
A tweet from Stephen king sent me here.

Crabbie Appleton reminds me of Donald Trump's attorney Rudy g
This just goes to show you that we all had to watch stupid shit when we were kids.
When I was watching this when it first aired, I was likely impressed by the animation. Now, as an adult, I'm thinking to myself "geez, that animation is crude and pretty awful".
Considering the budgets for TV animation back then this was pretty "terrific" as far as I'm concerned.
