  • Has it already been 10 years since I did my 20 years in gaming retrospective? I guess it has, and my outlook has changed quite a bit since 5 years ago, that's for sure. Since learning japanese a whole new world has opened up while another has started to close.

You should yakuza play like a dragon, definitely a breath of fresh air for the series

Yeah… also kinda have a niche interest. Tend to like stuff that aren’t mainstream and when they become mainstream my interest tends to dissolve. Pretty sure it ain’t always the case. Playing Dynasty warriors 5 right now. Anyone else play that?
Also trying to beat what did I do to deserve this! 2 on the psp. A bit stuck on stage 4.

Undercover AD2025 has been a game I've been trying to get into for years for the plot alone because it could be a batshit police detective muder mystery or a lame duck action shooter.
For non-Japanese speaking folks like me, I always end up getting that fix with fan translations. Thankfully, my back log is pretty big too and they're also mostly from the 3rd to 5th generation of games released. PS2 and Dreamcast had some real gems, especially from the JP market.

Have you looked at my translation of it? It was kind of a rough playthrough but savescumming helped, and I did get used to a lot of its failings. It's both batshit and not at the same time... I read the prequel novel too, it explained why she's dressed in a scarf in the one flashback in the game for one, and why she lost her memory. It's darker, she gets cornered by bad guys who orders her tits cut off(yeah) but she get saved at the last minute

You mentioned Ghost Trick - instant like.
Also, I think that's just how it is when you dive deep into Japanese obscurities - modern releases seem too "vanilla" compared to the sometimes experimental, artistic, obscure JP releases. I personally am into visual novels (or, you know, ADV games in JP 😁) and I think those titles are the most interesting, especially some older ones, because they can offer such a big experience compared to for example platformers (that's not to say platformers are bad or aren't interesting, of course). I also think it's really neat that as time goes on, more and more older Japanese titles are being translated to English speakers 😃

I feel the same way, although I'm not that into typical visual novels, mostly because I don't love anime/manga and also because they are so common they seem like the FPS of japan at times. But games with VN elements to them like Tokimeki Memorial or Mujintou Monogatari I enjoy.
I juat played Athena awakening from the ordinary life this weekend, it looks like parasite eve or something but it was a lot more like an adventure game with tank controls. Nothing great but it was interesting at least, shame SNK never followed it up

@@Protoman85 Yeah, I can understand that. Actually, I'm not into anime manga that much myself, I rarely watch anime or read manga. But I guess the common tropes are present there indeed.

Thanks to this I just looked up Seigi no Mikata and it looks super interesting! Would you recommend it? The one English blog post about it I found was not very enamoured haha.

To be honest I haven't played much yet but I really like its set-up and how it's like rent-a-hero and like playing a tokusatsu show, ratings and all. But it's dissappointing that the fighting isn't fighting but some kind of RNG
