Probably one of the oldest sought-after burgers in America comes from an era where creativity was a key part of survival because of the Great Depression. When it came to burgers in this time period, the big question was how to make a burger that used less meat while still filling the bellies of the customers. Enter the Oklahoma onion burger, or as some call it, 'the depression burger.' The Oklahoma onion burger, which, according to legend, was first made in the 1920s in a restaurant in El Reno just outside of Oklahoma City. This was because onions were cheap to buy in bulk and paired incredibly well with beef. They discovered that when you smash these two together with a slice of cheese and a soft potato bun, you are left with a burger that satisfies any hunger, tastes like heaven, and doesn’t break the bank. This is the reason why, to this day, the Oklahoma onion burger is still one of the most sought-after burgers that people go nuts over. So, if you have never had one before, we recommend giving them a try today because we know they will hit the spot just like they have been for over 100 years!

This looks AWESOME! Forgive my ignorance, but please help me...doesn't, "smashing down," a patty essentially rid the patty of the incredible juices?
I remember an episode from, "Bar Rescue," where a chef was simply pressing down on a patty, and he got more grilled than the onions!
By the way, I would definitely eat that!
@@trevorjensen2706 it depends on how you are cooking it. If you’re pressing down on a burger while on a grill grate the juices fall onto the coals/fire. With a smashburger your smashing the burger down before the fats come n the meat start to render and melt so the juices bubble up through the meat. A lot of times the edges are thinner so they get crispy while the center is a bit thicker to hold the juices. Pair that with a good maillard reaction from the flat top and you get pure heaven.
Perfect no ketchup. Mustard onion and pickles. Yum.
@@SnSGrills, that makes a lot of sense. I appreciate your reply. Thank you, sir.
wow the the perfect food to cause diabetus and heart attack

Sweet onions are everything for flavor! Sweet white onions, Vidalia onions and this is the season for them makes everything better!!!
I see people buying normal yellow onions at the store and i just roll my eyes
@@edithboozy1000 I just thought they're two colors red and white. And I prefer red cuz they're more spicy/ pungent while the pale ones are more bland. What is the third type even? Never heard of naturally sweet ones either. Just caramelized onions.
I Love Vidalia onions--there is nothing better
@tooniemama6959 i love just eating caramelized valadia and some morel mushrooms. Just add a little olive oil and butter and you are good to go.. ❤
@@sowhat... I don’t really know the difference but I always grab sweet onions cause them jawns hit like a mf on burgers. Haven’t been bothered to try any other onion
I loooooooove onions on burgers..a lot a lot.. thats the perfect burger right there..
It’s a great death wish too.
Funny because I love a good burger but I don't like onions at all lol
Yea and u lookin good to where I'll take that Onion breath any day...that's a compliment in case it's too volatile and vague that it could be taken in a bad way...I suppose I could just write it in a different, more bland way but that ain't me
@@antoniokastrocarlisledemel6617 Holy virgin
Agree and that was a satisfying amount just not sure about the mustard tho
So many different ways you can eat burgers.😋
From OK here, and yes, those are amazing. They were invented during the Great Depression as a way for the owner to make his nickel burgers less expensive to make. Didn't know how special the thing he was inventing was!
Me too tulsa wby
What is making it less expensive to make ? Don't understand.
Less meat per patty by volume (replaced by onion)@@rtk6945
@@rtk6945cheaper ingredient for the same size.
@@yungcess3708 I’m Tulsa too. Recently moved here. Born in Europe, grew up in Dallas, currently in Tulsa & I love it. Funny enough I’ve been a Sooners fan my whole life. My grandpa played football at OU so I always wanted to check out Oklahoma. Went to college there and decided to move to Tulsa (a lot cheaper than Dallas lmao) anyways Oklahoma food is insane. I go to a lot of local spots to eat out, then I buy my groceries from the Amish in Chouteau. Highly recommend the Amish for steaks and burgers you make yourself. All super clean meats with nothing added to it. One of the treats of Oklahoma! Saving for a house and thinking about Owasso.. I’ve heard it’s amazing and it’s a booming city just 20 mins from my job in Tulsa. Sorry for the rant I’m just new to Oklahoma and wanted to say how much I love it!

Eewk mustard no ✋🙅♂️😂

Literally my ideal burger. Pickles, onions, mustard, big fluffy bun, melted cheese, a nice crispy patty
Se li mangi in modo continuo, il tuo fegato dura poco tempo, una volta ogni due settimane va bene.
Omg that just sounds mouth watering! 🤤😋
Pickles and mustard are the worst two condiments. Change my mind.
@@markc4176 pickles and mustard are nice condiments, especially dijon. horseradish is nice too
Instead of the pickles I like shredded lettuce but onions and mustard can’t go wrong on a burger
finally a good simple burger without heart attack clause to accept and sign before eating
So good. We often make these as singles which are equally as delicious.
Facts... Not some burger with 20 ingredients canceling out each other
@@Bigedub101 wym "canceling out each other"? 🤣🤣🤣
I like bacon, but it can be a flavor killer.
@indioloco6600 On these with the onions, I think bacon 🥓 ( in a small portion ) would be an excellent compliment.👍Great thought my friend. I'm making these this weekend!!👌
Lived and ate burgers for 53 years in Oklahoma never heard of it💯
You’ll have to track one down. It’s been around since the 1920’s. You’ll love it.

So good!
I love the taste of onions and cheese😋
I love onions against pickles
I love red onions, and pickels too 😋
Yes
Yeah except for American cheese is not cheese!
This is the most accurate I’ve seen someone on UA-cam make the Oklahoma onion burger. Most don’t realize the onions need to be “paper thin”. Also most don’t realize the first side of the burger is supposed to get a little crispy. Onions, pickles, mustard and cheese only to be authentic. Job well done here!
Glad you loved it. I agree that it’s pretty authentic and so so good!
Art, Science and passion 👁️👄👁️
A lot of people realize that the onions need to be paper thin…
ua-cam.com/video/8Wm-rPBkW2o/v-deo.htmlsi=cTY1nUKA4hJoFzWl
That’s literally how most smash burgers are made tho😂 they gotta be paper thin onions for when u smash the burger, plus the usual smash burger toppings… Idk maybe it originated there, but this is just a typical smash burger to most people😂
Parece una hamburguesa hecha con morcilla de Sotopalacios 👏👏👏
Ummm.....Qué rico se ve todo!!!
The way he picked the burger up off the grill was perfection.😮😊❤
Mmmm, that looks SO delicious! I like how you charred the onions & burger 🍔 😋

I'm from Kern County, CA, and a lot of locals here have ancestors that moved to CA during the OK dust bowl. Onion burgers are still common on the menu in many places here! Soooo good! Gonna try this recipe tonight!
Californians treated those people like crap too. Made them order burgers from behind the restaurant like they were negros.
I’m from kernville, I don’t think I’ve ever seen an onion burger offered anywhere. But then again I hate onions so my mind might block out those memories
@@jeeedle One a bit closer to you would be Ethel’s Old Corral off of Alfred Harrell. Fun place all around, but they have a hell of an onion burger.

Greatness in simplicity
So good!
I've just ate and ate well but this gave me hunger anyways, wtf! this looks incredible.
This is me and my family's favorite burger, and it's easy as fuck to make. I slice the onions with a mandoline and make a simple burger sauce (mayo, ketchup, mustard and a couple spices) instead of using mustard, but those are minor details. The Oklahoma fried onion is as good as it gets when it comes to burgers
So simple but yet so tasty 🤤
So good!
Dwaaaaaaamn!! I miss OK! I had to go but can still reminisce on the good cooking and eating so good!! Restaurant Food taste like a good ol home cook meal!!🙌🏽🙌🏽🔥🔥

When you put that mustard on there I knew you was a real one
Haha. Appreciate that! 🔥🔥🔥
Condiments don't belong on burgers. That had plenty of flavors on it before adding the pickles and mustard. I'd rather just add bacon.
You said a LITTLE BIT of mustard!
