But it's true... I'd find it so hard to keep on top of the lore but having Byf to not only read it but interpret it and explain any relevant backstory is 100% the only reason I know about the lore and i'm so glad I do because its largely amazing!

Has anyone else noticed how the Tree of Silver Wings has the same design theme as Lumina? It's the same design as a weapon that was a piece of Darkness, purified in Light.

Honestly the tree of silver wings makes me think of the flowers in the Dreaming City. How the thorns inspire madness and violence but the leaves produce calming visions when boiled and made into tea. Asphadelia I think their called, Shuro Chi talks about them. Which also came from the Black Garden.
Uldren brought some of the Red flowers from the black garden. Pink Asphodelia are descendants of those flowers, though they seem changed somewhat. It would also not be the first time the thorns of these flowers would be significant. Remember the D1 lore entry where Pujari meets a flower shaped like a ghost, it cuts his hand, and his hand never heals?
this whole seed things just gives me ego the living planet vibes. celestial entity visiting worlds to spread something and later almost harvest it to become stronger.

So I just ran Interference for a second time (first on my warlock, now on my hunter), and I got an interesting line from Nokris. "Cast off your worm that drags you to the sky." It got me thinking, and this is pretty spinfoily... what if the Ghosts are to us what Worms are to the Hive.
The comparison isn't exact, and it's honestly probably the wrong question. But it's quite clear, from my perspective, that this line of Nokris' refers to the Ghost. Especially since Ghost's response was, "Worm? Speak for yourself." Evidently the Hive think there's SOME connection here. Could call for further investigation.

Isn't the Seed of Silver Wings, just a darkness version of the Seed of Light? I imagine we'll use it next season to unlock our Stasis subclasses

I doubt it. We never use the artifact from the previous season in the next season. I think the artifact we found in the Pyramid on the Moon will play a role in us getting the power of Stasis.
Mike the Warlock well we did use Osiris’s Lantern to open the Lighthouse, so considering the next big DLC is coming after this they might have us use it just before, but who really knows, they might change it up and allow us to use it next season
The Tree of Silver is the spawn of Triss’ true desires. All of the Silver from our Eververse purchases coalesced into a magical tree on IO. This is what Fenchurch would have wanted.

The branches near the top of the tree are curved and seem to form the shape of a sphere. Could the tree be in the process of creating another Traveler?

This is exactly what I thought when I saw it. It made me believe that it was attempting to create a new traveler. I’m glad I am not alone I’m this theory.

Look at the patterns on the traveler and the patterns on the tree (including branches). Compare the two, D1 traveler might give you a better look.
I think zavala said it grew from the last spot the traveler touched Io too, so maybe it's some sort of 'uh-oh, traveler gone, make new one?' thing.
something that ive been thinking about recently. Our ghost states that the pyramids arent ships but rather the darknesses version of the traveler. but doesnt that imply that there are or at least might have been more than one traveler at some point in time? curious to see if bungie does something with that
It depends if they are meant to be opposites then maybe not just to show that light is always limited in its reach

The beings using the darkness has reached out and talked with us more than the traveler EVER has.
And yet we Sit and hail the traveler as our last hope.
The message being sent right now is that we follow the light because it gives us power. If the darkness was the one giving us power we’d support the darkness. They’re a means to survival, except with the light we only survive because the light wills it so, with the darkness it’s followers only survive because they are strong enough. That’s why I think Savathun is trying to stop our communications as the darkness is abandoning the hive and is now deciding to support the guardians.

The light upset the balance of light vs dark, life vs death. it left to seed civilizations with light, giving it strength to overcome darkness. darkness is not truly our enemy.

I remember the new subclasses in forsaken came from a seed of light. Maybe the seed of darkness we are forming now will become our darkness subclasses

I literally just thought of this as I was rewatching the reveal stream from Tuesday. In The Taken King when Eris had her rock on Cayde’s map and he picked it up... did he wish he could find a way onto the Dreadnaught and her rock actually grant his wish? We know that her rock is an Ahamkara bone now and it hit me when I saw the cutscene again. Just food for thought.
This lore alone is what has kept me hooked so far. Now that the Darkness is showing itself ever so slightly, it will be cool to see this through

The seed is how we extract the darkness... But I imagine in September, that darkness will be used to give us Stasis. 🤷♂️
A medium if you will, it's something that is both a mixture of dark an light. I have a feeling the seed will be how we obtain those new dark powers and then we too will be a being of both dark and light.
No one has really picked up on this yet, but I think Bungie is going the Warframe route with this new element in that I'm pretty sure it's going to be a combination of ICE (hence "Stasis") and Darkness which is why they say it's "a power born of the Darkness" because it's a result of some aspect of the Darkness "touching" the icy moon of Europa

Even if it's not what the lore says 100% (I think), in design it's pretty much this : imagine different universes before the one we're in, or maybe parallel ones but not like ours, created in the process of creating Existence (with a big "E" because we talking about the original "spark"), with different rules, where things are possible that are not within the physics of our own universe, but yet it is possible to draw upon those different "rules", structures and elements from other "planes" of existence (the Void and such) through our paracausal nature as guardians, same for the seeds, the trees, and the traveler. So yeah it's "icy" in design but maybe it has another source, maybe it's more like a paracausal power that has to do with space-time fabric and time freezing. Also we kept saying those two words, "Darkness" and the "Light", since the begining of Destiny but, it's more of a philosophy than anything, it's really more about power and where it comes from, what it does, and the genesis of it that is rooted in rivalry between two paracausal forces, for some reason. It's not all black and white though, or good versus evil, is what I'm saying, it just has the aesthetics of it.

with the seed, as you get the seasonal mods from it or upgrade the recaster, it "grows". the stuff that surrounds the seeds covers it more.

I noticed the symbols too. Most likely it’s related to Savathun. Her schemes, and trickery is becoming more apparent.

Thank you Byf, as always, for the thought provoking insight. Very cool idea, about Mara Sov and Osiris's involvement. My bet is that "who planted it" isn't the question to ask. Rather I'm thinking the seed simply manifested, like a flame when conditions are right. When the light and darkness truly meet, the seed simply occurs, to represent the scales between two forces, naturally opposed.
Man I would have loved to watch you react to the stream announcement and playing the first bits of the new season. Seeing someone so knowledgeable and invested trying to parse all the new juicy information.
When tree or probabilities starts in the background and byf starts to talk about that we know the answer to question who planted the seed I already knew whos name is gonna be said... i got goosebumps

The seed is a mixture of dark and light, thats one thing for sure, it's very easily confirmed from one place, via the new engram system by the drifter. I think the seed is what will allow us to use our new dark powers in the expansion, we will be a being of both dark and light.Thus I have a feeling the place we "plant" the seed , might be within ourselves, to me that makes the most sense.
My guess is that the traveler was able to create guardians through the tree of silver wings. Ghosts could be light formed seeds. It explains why we are instruments for destruction. Also makes sense as to how we’ll be able to wield the dark

Vance said that he can distinguish two notes, and when the cabal imprisoned the light only one could be heard, and guardians started to fall left and right shortly after.
I assumed this seed we have now could potentially give us our darkness subclass, I only assumed that because we got “Seeds of light” from the game to get our other subclasses in the past.

I'm re-playing the Forsaken expansion, right after Cayde-6 death you have to talk first with Zavala and then with Ikora. She says The Traveler is speaking to her through visions, among other things she mentions "a white tree".

I have a theory on this. Bungie has confirmed darkness subclasses next season in the Beyond Light expansion. We have a malleable seed that is absorbing darkness energy and acts as a conduit for communication with the darkness. I think that at the start of the DLC, we will somehow absorb the power of darkness trapped within the seed and that is how we get our darkness supers.
When he says Eris’ message to the two other warlocks. I thought Eris was a hunter when she wielded the light

I'm beginning to believe the seed will be overtaken by Darkness and it will be the reason we get Darkness powers in Beyond light next season.
When I saw the seed under the tree my first thought was “oh no I’ve ended up in the cursed child play”
I knew the instant I came around that corner what this tree was, and I'm excited to see what happens from here
well going from the thematic of this season and i finally get 'the nine' reference being of nordic/viking myth this is probably the world tree which lets you travel between realms (youll get this reading some mytholgy or just played GoW they kinda explain it there also) For that it needs energy and apparently is goes to both light and dark places, hence its need of both light and darkness or maybe even something before there was light or dark and it fuses both into something we dont yet know. This also explains the new dungeon and the emphasis on the nine at the moment since they also come from a realm we dont know/understand.

wow, I have the same thought about the seed that was Osiris who plant it from the anomaly. I have more thought that the dark is "useful" the same as the light but Savathun won't let us to use it the same as her. that's why in the next expansion we will get the Stasis/stacist (idk the correct spelling fo this class) which I thought it will be powered by darkness. Uldren said " The line between light and dark is so very thin."

I would really love a storyline where we don't just conquer the darkness, but the light as well. Where perhaps the universe was imbalanced in favour of the light so the darkness chose its champions only for them to totally tip the scales. Now the darkness seeks someone that can use and even conquer both, and currently that seems to be us, while Savathun attempts to block us so we may yet be beaten and the darkness become all-consuming.

That says a lot of things, if the first Tree really came from the Black Garden. If the seed is a sort of mirror of the paracausal happenings around it, then you could say that for one, the Garden wasn't always black. And if that's the case, then the Vex were there to witness it officially become the Black Garden- would explain why some of them worship the darkness and are so sure of its victory. There's definitely something there to be talked about.
Byf, my good lore daddy, apparently the Seed of Silver Wings is supposed to be a barely new traveler, think about it, there are a lot of the pyramids but only 1 traveler ball. The gardener could have "planted" another traveler to reproduce more travelers but the Darkness wants something more thatn that. Something with unlimited potential that can be influenced by both the dark and the light like you said.
Idk how important this is, but there is another point in Destiny 2 in which trees and seeds are of importance. That being when we have acquired our subclasses. The white tree close to the Shard of the Traveler, and the seeds of light we collect during Forsaken. 1 during the story, 1 from Mara Sov, and 1 from the first boss of Last Wish. Something to keep in mind, eh?
The way its described, the anomaly from the earlier video reminds me of a black hole, and the location and response Osiris receives around the seed feel Vex in nature.
This would mean to me, that all these last seasons have been linking themselves and earlier events together for a Mara's grand plans for probably the Lightfall expansion.
The Black Garden is the original home for the Light and Darkness, the Vex being masters of time and space, found a way across trying to connect with the Dark left within. We see their results in Garden of Salvation set within the remains of the original Tree of Silver Wings.
Osiris and Rasputin found one of the many back-doors into the garden where Osiris without knowing, stole a seed of the Tree from the Vex within. Upon Mara's instruction, he planted the seed in an area rich in light to begin the growing of a new tree.
With the Darkness arriving and Eris carefully maneuvered into place to follow, our Guardian is now left carrying a new seed. One of Light and Dark, free from the manipulation of the Vex and eventually out of Savathun's grasp too.
A seed cultivated to Mara's designs for what comes next, for when hope starts to fail us, Savathun seems to have the upperhand and Light or Dark separately are not enough to claim victory. A seed for when we need power born like the awoken, of both Light and Dark together.
If this is remotely true, then I give the biggest props to Bungie for Mara's plan.
Her plan effectively truly kicked off when she found the last piece she needed, a Guardian who surprised her by dropping a Minotaur head at her feet in D1. Since then the gears have been turning and pieces moving into place. Oryx and Mara's Throne world. Eris and her path towards research of the Darkness. Osiris and the seed. Drifter, the Nine and easing Guardians into embracing the Dark. This is a slow game that we have been watching play out in plain sight the entire time, and all because Mara saw this all coming.
Thats why this past announcement was a big deal and why so many expansions were announced ahead of time.

I have a theory that the hill we climb in GoS, and were the final boss fight occurs, is the original tree of silver wings that was tore down when the traveler and winnower fought. If you look at it, it looks like a stump and is always the back drop every time we enter the black garden.
Love how bungie took this cryptic deep lore stuff from D1 and is making it integral to how the destiny universe functions
I dunno if someone already said this but the tree of silver wings more importantly the roots also appear on the lumina its a cool little detail.
It’s just my opinion, but I think that tree is one of the best designed elements I’ve ever seen in a Bunjie game ever. It’s incredible.
