Single-Channel ABS & Reality | Bajaj Pulsar P150 FAQ #3

- There are three things that you need to understand about ABS:
One. Anti-lock braking means the motorcycle can detect that you're about to skid while braking and protect you by unlocking that wheel many times a second. This gives you more control in a panic situation as well as when braking in slippery conditions.
Two. Single-channel ABS is a loophole the Indian government created when they're ABS law which doesn't say that both wheels should have it. The front brake is where the action is in most of your riding. Most Indians, unfortunately, use the rear brake -- a mistake. Single-channel ABS has its heart in the right place (and it's cheaper) but riders who refuse to upgrade their skills will find it nearly useless.
Three. Motorcycle ABS still needs the rider to have skills, car systems overcome this with extra grip and weight. If you grab the brakes on an ABS motorcycle, you won't skid and fall, but the motorcycle can feel like it's taking longer to stop. The trick is squeeze progressively instead.

make a video on braking
how a rider should handle ABS in this segment
Can do!
@@motorincplease do it's time
@@motorinc link ? 😂
@@motorinc please do.
Let’s do
I have learnt in riding in my dad's 2010 Pulsar 135 LS. What an amazing machine it was. 4 valve engine when it was not even a thing in Indian Commuter Segment. I was 16, hit the front brakes at 72kmph to save a puppy and was thrown off from the locked up motorcycle. That day till today, non ABS or with ABS, I don't rely on the bike. My mind knows how to brake like an ABS system. I use Hold-Leave-Hold-Leave the front brake with sharp rear braking in case of emergency on the road which works like a gem. I don't care about ABS anymore.
PS: You should add one more point. One should ride an ABS equipped motorcycle as if it does not have ABS. This is a safety net. You are not supposed to depend on it for daily riding. If your ABS kicks in all the time, you need to review your riding skills.
Great point TWP! You're absolutely right. But how we'd put it is not "as if it doesn't" we'd say -- learn to brake properly. You're going to need it.
@@motorinc That's valid advice for everyone whether they have ABS or not. However, I think how I pointed it out is also important because a lot of new riders depend on ABS rather than use it as an emergency safety net.
I bought my first ABS equipped bike in 2019 - a BS4 390 Duke. For the decade+ before that, all non-ABS bikes. My state of mind when I ride my 390 or my Interceptor is very different from when I (used to) ride my 200 Duke. On my older bikes, I knew that it was all down to my own skills. On my newer bikes, I have peace of mind that ABS will save me in a tight spot. It makes me less vigilant, less alert. I have to repeatedly check myself and bring myself out of that state of mind.
Just imagine that you are riding a motorcycle and suddenly you get a warning on your dashboard that your ABS modulator has failed and you are 50 km from the nearest workshop. Will you change your riding style? Will you reduce your pace? Will you become more vigilant and conscious of your braking distance? Will you take fewer risks? If the answer to any of these is yes, my statement is upheld.
Fair point. But tell us this: "it makes me less vigilant, less alert"... who is going to fix this for you?
@@motorinc The answer is in the same comment - I need to check myself every now and then to get out of that mindset. And as I said in my first comment, I need to ride as if I don't have ABS on my motorcycle. As I understand, people have asked you to make a video on braking with ABS. I trust you will remind riders who has the onus of braking properly - the rider, not the ABS.
As we did in point 3 in this video
He's right, Its still a good idea to try "threshold braking" technique even though you have the ABS, because the whole point of this technique is to shift more weight to the front tire thereby increasing traction on the front which enables the tyre to withstand higher forces before locking up.
Maybe they should focus on filling the holes on the road first but yeah, let us focus instead on our skills because hope for the former died out decades ago.
This is a great video though, as always.
🤜🏽🤛🏽
Thanks for making us realise.
🤜🏽🤛🏽
Got a p150 after seeing your video, but went for the dual disc varient as I dont mind the sportiness and i wanted the extra breaking power.
Congratulations! How has the experience been?
Yeah if, this channel covers various skills... from the amount of experience you guys have!
I have never experienced ABS, my 10 year old R15 does not have it - you know what that is why I ride carefully when it’s even slightly wet or sand on road. When I eventually get interceptor I guess I would need to get use to it and think for long time I would end up being careful (which is not bad thing)
I already doubted the effectiveness of ABS on a motorcycle (was about to upgrade to a motorcycle with ABS). Thanks for confirming that one has to be progressive while braking in an ABS motorcycle.
Single channel ABS is great. No need to turn it off on the rear. You can lock and slide at will.
Until it happens when you don't need it to. Then it's back to being a stupid loophole everyone's crawling through
@@motorinc Good point. I will resume my practice of emergency braking and locking the rear wheel. It was easy to lock and slide on the old cast iron Bullets, even easier to do so on my Dukes but I would not want to do it on my Interceptor.
Tip: Most of the time, if you're eyes stay up and look at the horizon, the rear slide stays controlled
@@motorinc Noted. Thank you.
@@motorinc had it happen in a classic 350 once in a wet patch where a water tanker just crossed locked the rear completely i was new to the bike i think it was the 4th or 5th time i was taking it fell down skid all over the road had a huge scar from my sholder to the wrist but the leg gaurd which i didn't fancy saved my leg from any injuries by wrapping itself around my leg went to hospital did first aid and to make sure i dont have any trauma for riding bikes called the insurance and took the bike to service center the same day met a fellow re owner who fell down the same way and we were vibing with my mom glaring and scolding both of us at the service centre learned how to emergency break after that properly 😂😂 and i was going at around 30-40 kmph only that time too one uncle was like how did you fall dispite goong so slow
I hope Mr Gadkari is listening on the loop on single channel abs system.Dual channel abs should be mandatory on 2 wheeler even in 100cc bike's.
I have swapped out my front brake pads of the apache 1604V with ceramic brake pads, and instant results!
Excellent! Thanks for letting us know!
Video on Mt15 please ❤... would love Shumis view on - if it's still value for money with recent updates or overpriced
Can do!
I can't imagine how I used do triple digits constantly out on the highway back in days with no fear, no worries back in the days on my bike with on ABS. I had some skills I believe.
Please make a video on HONDA Highness 350 Strength and weakness. Thanks in advance
Can do!
This new beard look suits you Sir.. 😍
Thanks! 😃
After owning a non abs bike and falling especially on the the muddy roads. I don't think even a dual channel abs might help. I haven't tried that on a dual channel abs bike.. If that helps then i will be a fan
make video on yamaha mt15 also..
Can do!
@@motorinc i just come across your videos and saw your content it was so good... 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed them!
Make a video about ns400z
Stay tuned @Shaklin-wo5ev!
can you throw some light on whether abs gets activated at some higher speeds like above 30kmph or something, iown a hunter rebel blue and i observed skidding on brake slamming at low speeds
The thing common with indian brands and the usa army is that they will try and do everything to achieve the 'product' at the bare minimum expense. Be it the vehicle, or the features of the vehicle .
ABS is for casual riders. Sometimes it is a limitations for track rider, even in streets
Hi Guys.Is single channel better or dual channel better? Bcoz I really like the hornet 2.0 but it has only single channel abs. And i really use my bikes till their lifetime like 16 to 20 years atleast.
So should I buy hornet 2.0 or go for dual abs bikes?
Note: not in an urgency to own a bike so I can weight even for 2 years
Look for dual channel abs
Look for dual channel abs
I was looking to buy Avenger 220, but it has Single channel ABS...😢
I still don't like abs because i am in control of my bike the abs confuse me
Yes...loop in law
💯
its better bajaj only gave single channel abs on my pulsar 150 neon bs4. the abs interrupts my front brakes as soon as 1 grain of sand hits the front tyre and I am forced to use the rear brake to prevent rear ending someone.
That means your braking skills need polishing Tejas. Unlike a car, where you just apply a lot of brake and let ABS deal with the pressure management, on motorcycles (fewer and smaller contact patches), to extract the best of the ABS system, you do have to be more gentle with the initial application of the brakes. Grabbing the brake will always trigger ABS too early.
@@motorinc i have learnt on a non abs bike, forgot to mention that. It was a yamaha szr. Never locked up my front tyre :) trailbraking is fine on this bike
Hunter 350 video ?
We made two Hunter vs Ronin series videos. FAQ for the Hunter is coming shortly
@@motorinc a proper review will be fantastic. Your video quality is miles above what I have ever seen on UA-cam similar to MKBHD
Thanks WDYDT!
