she said if not for the age change ( after 93), she would have competed in 96 olympics in the team, what do you think abaout?

She was always (1980 onward at least) ineligible for 96, as she only turned 14 (b.1982). The change in 93 caused her to lose eligibility for the 97 World Championships, as you needed to be 16 vs. 15. The FIG was ridiculous for not grandfathering in that generation; 1981-born gymnasts (Teslenko, Teza, Marinescu, Moceanu, etc.) were < 1 year older and able to compete at 1995/96/97 Worlds and 96 Olympics, while Atler (and all 82-born gymnasts) were forced to wait all the way until 1999!
Even worse, every quad between Seoul - present had at least 3 Worlds except for 97-00! 1 quad earlier, she'd have been eligible for 5 Worlds (93, 2 in 94, 95, 96) and 1 quad later, she'd at least have been eligible for 2 (02, 03).
I don't think ANY gymnast could've made the 96 US team over 1 of the Mag 7. BUT, had the FIG let 1982-born gymnasts at 97 Worlds, she would've done very well. UB were a mess and it's hard to predict what routines she'd have performed had they trained her with Lausanne as a realistic goal. BB, FX, AA were deep, so even on a perfect day, I think top 8 in those 3 would've been the best she could hope for (still a great accomplishment), but a VT medal was likely.
That success would've taken a ton of pressure off in the following years, and while her ankle ultimately did her in, she may have at least pushed through and fought to make the Sydney team.

@@jjs5056 I think she absolutely could have bumped Borden off the team. I would hate to see that happen, but her beam and floor would likely be competitive with Borden atleast, and her vault is light years better, and the US Mag 7 werent even a great vaulting team, she could have easily been the best vaulter on the team (vs Borden who was by far the weakest and was sat out of vault). Borden is far better on bars of course, but it is meaningless when even Borden was sat out of bars on that team, lol! So I could see Atler bumping off Borden for sure, depending on her compulsories.
