I imagine that if Kennedy Steve ever got mad enough to tell someone to go to hell, it would be Left on Hades, Right on Damnation, hold short of Purgatory, and once Charon moves out of the way, enter Hell.
I’m quite bummed I’ve only just discovered Steve, 6 years into his retirement! I hope he’s fully enjoying it- I wonder if he sometimes catches himself speed-talking randomly at home. “Hey-family-to-the-car-pushback-turn-left-turn-right-hold-short-at-John-street-monitor-me”
I love how even when he is angry he doesn't lose control he remains stern. He gets his point across with little aggression, to make a point but not anger the other person. Perfect communication skills
What I find funny is that, having listened to quite a few of these by now, I think "wow, this is the most tension I've ever heard in his voice" - and even then, he's not stressed, he's just being brisk.
Brisk is a good description. Steve could handle situations like this one -- rush hour on a snowy day, with plows on the runways and planes needing to be de-iced before takeoff -- without losing his cool or even his sense of humor. The only thing that bothered him, as we see here is when a plane or other vehicle on the taxiways failed to respond when Steve called them. When he would say something like "Earth to Delta 2540" you knew he was starting to simmer. But even then, once he finally established contact, he didn't get nasty (as some controllers do) -- he just complained briefly that they hadn't responded before and then carried on with his instructions. He understood remarkably well that pilots are human and can make mistakes -- he'd make sure they knew that they'd caused a problem for him, but he didn't make it personal. Steve retired Sept. 1, 2017, and is much missed by the pilots, by his colleagues in the tower, by his fans here on UA-cam -- maybe even by the tug drivers! :-)
Yes, Steve almost sounds cranky at one point, but still professional, and he kept his cool and had command of the situations. An hour at this pace would destroy a lesser man. After watching some of these videos I have acquired enormous respect for air traffic controllers!
Steve is my definition of a true “alpha male“. Never gets nasty, but oozes authority. A natural. (I really hate the alpha beta male bullshit that comes up at times. When it does, their idea of alpha just seems nasty to me....)
Why is it in every conference call just as you think it's over someone always brings something pointless up right at the end keeping the call going for another 15 mins. I hate that guy....
The only good thing about those is you can mute yourself out lol i had an old school project manager (in his 60's at the time) who always said 'any meeting that lasts more than 40 minutes is a waste of time... I have to keep quoting him too often sadly 🙄
I cannot imagine directing all these pilots at one time. It’s amazing to me that people can handle all this but I’m thankful for all those who can!!! Love to all the ATCs!
This controller is Awesome! All these pilots, snowplows, de-icing trucks, tugs and who knows what else... It's amazing. All that and he keeps a sense of humor, makes minor but USEFULL jokes that actually enhance situational understanding... Wow!
I've been watching a lot of these videos and I noticed too, that the jokes are useful. They keep in mind a problem situation, or they warn in a way that is funny instead of nagging, or they point out an error in a way that means they won't make the same mistake again soon. I bet he had positive effects literally around the world.
He is what, I believe, the kids call GOAT Also love with the way the pilot apologizes. No arguing, just sorry. Also, notice that pilots address him as "sir" quite often.
LiveATC's feed is worse, much worse than what the ground controller hears. Trust me all his conversations are pretty much clear as a blue sky. It is the equipment that the person uses and the altitude at which the equipment catches the radio frequencies that worsen's the quality. Like if you notice the pattern: All the ground vehicles and small planes like EMB 135/145 are tough to listen to them
Raphael Aubry Well, I hope they all understand that this feed isn't directly from the Tower antenna. Guy who provides the feed for liveatc could be in the range of 10-15 km's from the JFK. Quality of the audio depends where you live and what's your surrounding.
Christ - I almost needed a liedown after listening to eight minutes of that! How do the controllers manage hours and hours on a shift? You clearly have to be a very strong personality to do the job, too - kudos.
I am not a pilot or in the industry but I sat and listened to all of that... wow, just wow... well done... clear, concise, and professional, and the schoolmarm when he needs to be. What is an "angry puppy"? Is that just a cute name for an angry person?
Loïc AF No it is NOT! Before you come here to correct me, you better inform yourself. AIR FRANCE is the company NAME, AIRFRANS is an official callsign by the ICAO doc8585!
The old Candid Camera show loved to find busy traffic cops in NY and show their style and panache directing a busy intersection. This reminds me of that, only verbal.
When my Dad got out of the Air Force he had controller offers from NY and PHX. He chose PHX - wisely. He thought hard about NY though, to a controller that's the big leagues.
That is incredible orchestrated mayhem. Just wish Kennedy Steve was here with us at AGS, DNL and AIK this week for the Masters air traffic. Bet he would have a good time.
For a hot minute in the ‘70s I looked into being a controller. A rare smart decision on my part to not pursue. My BP is barely under control now & I am retired and within weight guidance. One day like that & I’m certain I’d have exploded.
Being part of a snow pack is difficult...because you are listening to two radios all the time. A two-way that you use to coordinate and communicate with the other ground equipment and also the aviation radio that connects you with the tower. Sometimes you can be giving or receiving instructions from one...while you are being requested to copy on the other.
I noted that KS did not climb all over the snow team for not answering right away because he was on the other radio. Thanks for explaining from the inside.
It could be worse---a cloudy late spring day with south winds where only 22L can be used for departures---the departure line snakes all the way around the airfield.
Wow! Nice one.. how long after a shift does it take to slow the brain down?.. Also visuals would make some of the audio easier to understand. Especially in hectic traffic jam situations or idiot tug situations..
I would love to see these “speed round” videos with a map graphic showing color-coded planes creeping the taxiways while graphically highlighting the one ATC is speaking to and visually showing the movement that ATC is commanding.
When he said follow the pink guy, at first I was imagining some guy decked out in a pink three-piece suit waltzing his way down the runway saying here come follow me!
Wow i really hope they get free massage and other perks to release stress before and after work i once apon a time wanted to complain about airport prices in shops and the price of food at Kennedy... But knowing that a party if the money goes to these guys makes it more worth it. This man deserves a good pay and all the perks
while listening to this, you gotta remember, everyone knows the verbs and objects in these phrases and compiles that into their mental map (visual thinking). they know where the taxiways are and what the route looks like. the ATC also sees where everyone is.
Love this guys ability to think this quickly. For his sake, I hope every hour of his day is not like his videos. Where do you take training for this job?
JFK is an older airport and it is not configured for high volume traffic from large jets. Controllers work 2 hours on Ground Control and then move to another controller position (one of 3) for another 2 hours..

dude, seriously dude..... what an epic sence of humor... you should be writing for SNL
😂😂😂
And add in the infamous Delta tug
Now _that_ was funny :)

Rumor is he moved to managing a terminal at Kennedy, so he's still around, just mandatory retirement from ATC.
I love how even when he is angry he doesn't lose control he remains stern. He gets his point across with little aggression, to make a point but not anger the other person. Perfect communication skills
The man, the myth, the legend.
Kennedy Steve was born for ATC
Kennedy Steve and Boston John are the best

Right, and imo he's not funny, just very witty, very sharp.👍
Need this guy to control our conference calls at work!!! Would be over in 10 mins instead of an hour 😂

God that was 8 minutes. Imagine an hour of doing that... Props to airport controllers!
Imagine 8 hours of doing that!
Amazing.
I'm not entirely convinced Kennedy Steve isnt 30+ squirrels in a trenchcoat, and thats part of his secret.
@@CKOD Ever seen that postal office scene from Men In Black?
@goatnad6970 Actually when you listen to liveatc the instructions are a sometimes a few seconds apart from each other just like in this video
If your a student pilot this is a wonderful way to understand atc conversation . After awhile its just hilarious.
+s14duma Thank you! :)
AirChina 981 Kennedy ground?
The Delta Ramp seems like they live up to Delta's nickname!!!
Doesn't Ever Leave The Airport ; )
s2v8377 The Terminal 1 Ramp however does give them a run for their money!!!
Fantastic comment! I had a good chuckle.

Typical N.Y. air traffic management. Not chaos. Well orchestrated, timed activity. Ovations to the ATC.
Pretty sure that's Kennedy Steve.
@@ErzaRosenberg Yeah, heard some others and none other gets the traffic moving nearly as smoothly.
They really do rock. It is a beautiful thing!

I bow down to ATC and pilots. What professionals. Talk about cool under pressure. What concentration the Traffic Controllers have.

Excellent job!
Hearing this is actually calming.

That's because women like a controlling man. It's human nature
