Saw Elton in 1974 on his Goodbye Yellow Brick Road tour at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. Amazing concert, and I was a kid - right up in front of the stage in front of the late great Dee Murray (RIP) who winked at myself and my best mate after we called out to him. Concert started with fog rolling out over the stage and then Elton sprung out in his coloured ball outfit, glowing ans swaying, and started playing "Funeral for a Friend". Just an amazing concert and amazing memory/experience. Funny thing too - my father took my mate and I to the concert and he bought himself a ticket as well even though he had no liking of modern day music, being from the Nordics. However, he came along, sat in the stands and afterwards on the way home he was telling us that some guy sitting next to him was smoking something throughout and it wasn't a normal cigarette, lol😂
I was at that concert the same year that my Dad had to sign the band's visas to get in and out of the country. I was ON TOP OF THE WORLD!! I have very much been an Elton John fan from day one! I actually heard my first crude joke from him...with that outfit on...he said he had to watch his balls when he sat down!! LOL! He was definitely born to entertain! THANK YOU, ELTON JOHN!! :):)
Bruce Rothwell This was was definitely 1974 - I attended this concert and it was truly magic! All lights were out before it started and the coloured balls were fluorescent - they shone in the dark as EJ came to the stage and hit the keys before lights came on....what an entertainer....the best! I hope to attend his farewell tour in 2018/19.
This is definitely the "Yellow Brick Road" Tour of Australia in '74. I remember the coloured balls on the suit with darkness & fog machine & he opened in darkness with "funeral for a friend / love lies bleeding"......totally vivid in the memory....Randwick racecourse in Sydney....Kevin Borich & the La De Das opened
My first real concert. It was an excellent concert by a master at the height of his powers. The start of Elton’s showmanship, which later distracted a bit from his quality as a song writer and musician.
Saw him at the WACA in Perth same tour , cost $4 a ticket and parked my mini at the front gate! I was amazed by the fog machine during Funeral for a Friend. I was 19
Where are the clips from Koonung?? Victoria Australia?? 1971ish??? A MAGNIFICENT Concert that showcased an amazing piano player- amazing Taupin lyrics - and great costumes
@bsizzy17 It probably was..I was just going by the cover on his piano, which maybe he could use this one on his tours for England,Australia and so on and then use the sequined one for America.Even though he used that one on the Christmas in London dvd, which is on youtube..I do know in the doc Elton John and Bernie Taupin Say Goodbye to Norma Jean and Other Things that it was this cover on his piano and that was recorded in 73...oh,well,still a great video!
@mrgb46 Ok, now I'm certain it's 1974. He preformed in Australia on these dates, according to eltonography 21 Feb 1974 South Melbourne Football Ground Melbourne Australia 1974 tour of australia 28 Feb 1974 Western Springs Stadium Auckland New Zealand 1974 tour of australia 14 Mar 1974 Randwick Racecourse Randwick Australia 1974 tour of australia
@bsizzy17 Or it could be the latter part of 73 because EJ's piano doesn't have all the sequins like it did when he toured America.Check out the concert when he did I Saw Her Standing There. Also,I think his costumes were more outlandish in 74 than they were in 73..Plus,Ray didn't wear a hat in concert in 74 either..Have to look into that one..Either way,it's still a great video..
@bsizzy17 and he didn't tour those places in 73? I'm going by the piano cover and his glasses, which he didn't use in 74..oh,well,it doesn't matter.still a great clip!!
@bsizzy17 I looked it up.Just to make sure...I tried to add a link to this message, but it wouldn't take it..Go to yahoo and type in "when ray cooper joined elton's band"..I think it's all experts dot com or something like that..

My first concert in Melbourne same tour in Feb 1974 (I’ve added another 50 plus since). He wore feathers, I wore broderie anglaise. Magic happened.

i think GYBR never sounded as good live as the original recording. Such a special song!
