Thanks Bruce..Either the filter was faulty and couldn't keep up with the pressure increase with vasoline in the pump or the cheap Chinese oil filter couldn't cope with the oil pressure increase...I go with the cheap filter option...It happened once before about 30yrs ago...Guy supplies a filter of unknown origin and you know what next...Cheers mate.
As far as I know it's still all good....Sometimes occasions occur where a constant 20mins a 2500 gets interrupted like a poor oil filter that leaks or a cooling system isn't up to the task so what are you gunna do.?...Stop or cook it.?..Nuff said.
I saw that the last pick of the timing chain, you had turned it to No 1 piston rocking and then later we see the dizzy pointing to no 4. Why not No 1 unless you turned over the motor again.
Did I mate.?!...That was a while ago...Sorry but I don't remember but if it was different then I must have turned it....When #1 rocks that means #4 is at TDC and that is how the chain sets the engine so you need to turn the crank 360 to get TDC#1..That's probably what you saw...Cheers mate.
Nice work mare but i dont know why anyone would still use a 2 barrel , Gm had rochesters , great old carb , but each to their own. Wifes telling me to build a hq statesman next time, shes right to, sick of building Mopars and i love hq statesmans. Was wondering if they had a hotter 308 than other gms because everyone of those i drove was faster than other 308s . They really went hard .
The guy wanted it to be as close to original as possible...A HQ with an injected 5.0 and a TH700r is a sweet combo and they go pretty good too...I have that in my '38 Chevy.
@@ziggassedup oh yeah , how nice , the over drive as well. I'm a carby guy though and love old carbs ,Holley's , carters Rochester except thermoquads , they always leak from the plastic body. When they work they're great but let me down so many times . Heard the later 308 has great heads from VN up . Have always liked the old 308 , remind me of a hot 318 . Made did 550,000 on a stock 308 and it still went hard . That chev is a work of art , just finished the wife's 67 impala . Love them all.
A great almost zero dollar upgrade for these is to throw a 308 manifold and 4 barrel on, as they are the thing that 5 litre owners usually replace first, and you pick up maybe 30hp and make the engine so much more responsive. Actually they are a fun little engine with a few mods, if you could find a way to adapt a T5 gearbox from a VN- VT commodore that would be real fun on the street. Oh and grab a BA/AU whatever falcon (you can tell I'm up on my modern ford models, not) aluminium radiator with the twin thermos for $120 or whatever they go for and get the ~30hp that plain metal fans drain back, we've used them on so many engine conversions and they are just so cost effective and do the job.
I remember we had a guy come in with an EH and he'd done up a 179HP block with a yella terra 12 port head, roller rockers , stage 3 cam, extractors, but the guy had put a barrel on it and a holley 780.. Welll the thing was running so rich there was fuel dripping out of the exhaust pipe at idle. It was coughing and stammering and when you did give it a gutfull it just loaded up for about 3 seconds before getting up to revs. Though it did go well at anything over 3000rpm. I think the guys ended up swapping the 4 barrel manifold out for a 2 barrel and putting a holley 350 on it, INSTANTLY better. like the stuff he'd had done to the motor now actually started coming to life. A bit of jetting (they had one of those real old Dynos in one room that had the horsepower readings on a clockface. no other data whatsoever. lol) And it was actually quite impression for a less than 3 litre engine. I think the boss told him to go out and find a HR disc brake front end as the next order of business to actually stop the thing. This was the 90s, so there was a chance he'd find one in the Trading Post or Sunday Times Classifieds.
Hey mate, i know it's a old video but do you have a video of ignition timing a 304,308 by any chance only asking i have a vk 308 and couldn't really find anything.
@@ziggassedup just want to know how to time up a vk 308 which is popping out back the exhaust. I have a timing light but want to know which is best settings on timing cover where it's got the "A , R" do i set it just before or ?, and what does the little notches mean on either side 🤔
That's the garbage the transmission shop put on my 4l60E trans. Garbage Chinese filter, the pan gasket was worse. OEM, not leaking! China sucks so many filters even OEM ones are made there now
Oh well, let him lose power. Street machine did a build on a 253 to see how much power they could get out of one with bolts ons, and the 4 barrel manifold and the quadrajet from a 308 was the biggest increase. Hell, under the air cleaner , nobody will know the difference, he can keep the 253 sticker from rare spares on it lol. They did a thing on how much fans, plastic, metal , and the clutched type draw from engine on that raodkill engine masters show recently and the biggest loss was 30 hp compared to no fan. Electric water pumps i'm guessing would free up least 8 - 12 hp. all this stuff is so cheap nowadays compared to in the 90s (well some of it was nonexistant then, well unless you were a race car team) but it's free horsepower really.
One guy is getting 515 hp out of a 253 stroked to 278 or something like that. But it's got the works, I beam Rods, Forged piston, roller rockers, Hilborn mechanical fuel injection.. everything that can be done - IS. Rips in the VK commo it's in too.
Hi Zig. We had a Crow-Cams-Valve-Train-kit-Holden-253-308-V8-Street-Strip-Performance-5616-K503 put in a 308. Sent it to the mechanic to set the new valves lifters etc. He set the cam to 8 degrees as per specs he says the manufacturer stated. Having a problem setting initial timing. It coughs on start up and then runs like there's a vacuum leak (checked for that). It has a holly 650 quad fitted. Marks are out on 1 TDC. It's my belief I have to reset the timing mark on the balancer. Your view?
My cheap arse boss buys cheap Chinese filters..They work fine with modern engines and synthetic oils but when they get old school thick oil blown into them they give up.
the first few times I overhauled olds engines I put gasket sealer on the end rubber gaskets of the intake manifold, I found out later by doing that, it made the rubber gasket slip out and caused a profuse leak.. oh well, learn by doing.
Hi mate, I was wondering what brand carby kit did you use / where abouts did you get it from? I have a 253 that's been running straight LPG for over a decade but I would like the option of petrol too in case the LPG fails. Cheers!
The local parts shop got the kit for me...Sorry I don't remember the brand but it was pretty pricey...Good idea to get the petrol system running..It's a bit hard to get a tin of LPG if you ever run out...Cheers.

Thanks Tom...It was a pretty expensive tune up..lol
Lots of goodie parts on there Zig and it sounded good in the end. Customer has got to be happy with his vehicle now.
Cheers mate...He'll be happy I recon...I still gotta sort out the fuel gauge and speedo now
Ah, not to worry Zig on the gauges! You're the best technician in the shop, so I know you'll get it all sorted out :)
Another UTE back on the road. Nice job ZIG

I have a complex 😉
Haha
It's a good looking engine and now it's better since your hands and new parts have been all over it!

The lifters are made in Muskegon Michigan. That's where we do our grocery shopping. Well... not at the factory where they make the lifters. You know

The WB 253 from 1980 to 1984 got the Quadrajet carby. 700 CFM one I think. The only 253(4.2L) to do so. Called L36 in Holden Speak.

Thanks John.
Great videos Zig! This is a master class! Is there nothing like a ute!
Thank you kindly!
Excellent work mate

Sounded good
Thank you bud.
Might have to make that mainjet tool, i rebuilt my stromberg recently and the jets were shit to remove. How long is the tool? Looks quite short
it's about as long as your index finger.

Get #1 piston to tdc and see how far the balancer mark is....If it's real close then I think the cam timing is way out...Good luck with it mate.

Making all the right noises now, good job. What happened to the oil filters?

About 3 liters of high Zinc 20W50 gone...lol
Popping couple filters running fuck all oil pressure to motor with blocked filters with fresh cam then blames bad batch of filter’s 🤣🤣🤣
Fkwit

what not going to run cam in? ziggy more like dodgy
