    Junkyard prices on LS3s are insane! I'm seeing prices from $6k-9k for 100k mile engines. You can buy a brand new GM long block for $4999 all day long with a 2 year 50k mile warranty. LY6s are more reasonable in the $1500-3k range.

    Finally a apple to apple comparison! Which proved what we had already had thought in theory and further prove that the LY6 is the best bang for buck LS style engine! You get the cubic inches, you get the best factory heads and the best factory intake at a budget friendly price!

      In all the time I have been following Richard, this is the closest comparison I have seen. To be honest I didn't realize the LS3 had a higher compression, but makes sense. Performance engine VS truck engine 🤔

    Thanks so much! I enjoy all your content, this one is reliving to me as I'm choosing between 1800 for a 6.0 or 3400 for a 6.2 it's quite the price increase for a natural aspirated 10 hp difference. Really made my decision ALOT easier!

    Thanks Richard for confirming a my feeling of using the 5.3 liter LSx aluminum blocks, the L33,LH8, LC9 for making big HP from big boost as opposed to the bigger displacement alum LSx blocks, by revealing your "general rule". For me the 5.3 alum blocks is a near perfect combination of super strength from the thick cylinder walls and the light weight and superior heat dissipation properties of aluminum.

    Richard, most people, when speaking as fast as you do, aren't nearly as intelligible. Kudos! I haven't any idea of how much rehearsal you do before you do your "voice over" but you impart a tremendous lot of info quickly and clearly. I've picked up more about engine response to mods, particularly boost, from your presentations than the 60 years of "play" have so far gained me! Thanks! FR

    Since I'm a road racer, I'm a sucker for aluminum blocks. I can't stand the thought of putting an iron block 6.0 in my Camaro. The extra 80-100 pounds in the front would be the wrong thing for balanced handling. I have thought a lot over the years of adding power, but in road racing, you can't just add power. You also have to add brakes, because it's nice to be able to get into the turns after you have enjoyed the extra power down the straights. Even when stock, the LS1 had more power than the stock brakes could handle. If I drove as hard as I could, the fluid would boil and the brake pedal would go soft in about 3-5 laps. So I made a DIY front brake upgrade kit using C5 Corvette rotors and calipers, and ran 3.5" ducts to cool the calipers. Braking problem solved.
    But I still dream about driving a 1000 hp car on a road course. It would be cool to be on a track with long straights like Road America, VIR, or Daytona, and have enough power to make them seem like go-kart tracks. I could pass anybody on track with a gentle squeeze on the gas pedal, and would probably have too much power to go WOT for more than a few seconds on the longest straights. Can you imagine trying to get through the Kink and run to Canada Corner at Road America with that much power?

    There is also the 6.0L L76 that came in the Pontiac G8 GT. It is all aluminum and doesn't have variable cam timing, although it does have displacement on demand. The Pontiac G8 GXP came with the true LS3 6.2L and the difference in power once the GT 6.0 guys throw in even a stock LS3 cam is negligible considering it has 10.4:1 compression, just slightly less than the 10.7:1 in the LS3. It is a great motor. Basically an LS2 with the amazing LS3 heads. I loved mine until I wiped some main bearings, so in went a custom LSX454 lol

      Agreed! I'm building a "mild" 6.0 LQ9 with LS3 heads and a lumpy cam. This gives me an idea of what i can expect, so i can order an appropriate clutch

    The 6.2 has a .065 bore size advantage. Doesn't make make much of a difference. The 6.0 is down 1.1
    points of compression compared to the 6.2. 9.6:1 vs 10.7:1. The arguments can end.

    Would like to see this with a thicker head gasket on the ls3 and maybe thinner on the 6.0 ( yes I know they are often positive deck and you have to be careful)..
    I feel like compression equalized would make so similar power the LS3 money could be better spent somewhere else

      Rule of thumb is 3% more power for every point in compression. Within reason of course.

    Richard I'd think it'd be great to see a test on a Gen 3/4 5.3 and 6.0 with the new Gen 5 L8T crank. Would be very interesting to see a near square motor on an LS using essentially a SBE if the stocks pistons can work, as well as what type of top end combo you think would work best with that for different circumstances.
    Love the videos, and your enthusiasm to share knowledge, keep it up!

      If you can get an L8t crank you might as well go with the whole engine. They have lt1 heads and cam stock, the intake manifold is different and so are the pistons but the lt2 c8 intake bolts right on and it less than $300 from gm. Serious that L8t with longtubes, camshaft and lt2 intake would smash through 600hp on the engine dyno.

    I stumbled across an LY6 and I’m happy to use it in my ‘71 C10. That said, the LS3 in this video was a bit weaker than most, for some unknown reason. Most seem to make 10 more lb-ft and hp than this one. The expected difference is easily explained by 12 cu in and a full point of compression (10.7 vs 9.6). Expectation from 500-ish hp and 376 cu in is about 20 hp from the compression ratio. Likewise, 12 cu in should be about 16. So the LS3 should have been in the neighborhood of 35 higher than the LY6. For me, price won the argument regardless, and I’m blessed to have the 6.0. For the boosted application, I’d agree with Richard’s comment that the L33 would be the best choice. Not cheap but way more affordable than the LS3, all aluminum, and just add boost to get whatever power you need. 500-ish horsepower will be plenty for my driver C10! Thanks for the comparison, Richard!

      @@richardholdener1727 I looked up your LS3 crate motor YT with 469 cam, part of the EFI intake shootout. You said 581 hp, 523 torque for the baseline. I’m thinking 575-580 is typical for the cammed LS3-that makes this one a little short (watching UA-cam, not testing on a dyno!) OTOH, I agree the base crate engine numbers were about as expected. Still not quite enough difference, but nothing repeats exactly. I’m planning to run a 225° intake cam in my 6.0 with 823s for better manners with a stock stall torque converter in my driver. If I get 500 at the crank, that’ll be great!

    566 horsepower for the 6.2 with the comp cam vs 541 horsepower for the 6.0 with the same comp cam with less compression thinking if compression was equal to the 6.2 on the 6.0 the 6.0 would make 550 to 555 horsepower so really if all things were equal on both engines so the 6.2 is somewhere 10 to 15 horsepower over the 6.0 if compression was the same

    just a thought. the iron 6.0 can be bored. 30 or. 40 thousands and change the pistons wouldn't you end up with an iron 6.2 or larger and similar compression ratio. other than weight saving I like the iron 6.0 because like you said it will take more boost.

      You can punch iron 6.0 blocks to 4.065 to get factory 6.2 bore size.they can still get boosted but if your gonna turbo it why wouldn't you just cut it to 4.020 to keep the walls as thick as you can? It's like 9 cubic inches, it won't make much more power because of the displacement but will reduce the head gasket clamp area and wall thickness enough I wouldn't do it.

      In a NA application had a few friends punch the gen 3 iron to 4.065 and ran stock LS3 piston... worked good, engines have gone 3 plus hard years without issue... but boost on this combo is definitely out of the question

    Have you ever put together or tested a high compression (12.0 +) 6.0? It would be interesting to see a more max effort 6.0 na combination. It would seem to me a good alternative to a small or even big block in a restomod muscle car. I think it wouldn't be difficult to make 650 - 700 hp.

    With a 4% power gain from 1 point of compression, shouldnt that equal around 20 hp making both engines extremely close ?

      Can I ask which of these 2 engines would you choose to run a lsa on. I was told the 6.0 will make more boost than the 6.2 because of smaller cylinders. Is this true?

      @@marcusware712 More boost? Yes. Boost is just pressure which is a measure of restriction. More air means more restriction. But smaller holes mean more restriction. High boost numbers dont always mean high power.
      The bigger engine will see less boost but make more power.

      @@marcusware712 Both will work. The LS3 will make more HP than the LY6 due to compression ratio difference. But LS6 costs more. Want a good bang for the buck engine? Find an LQ9 and put some LS3 heads on it. Iron block, 10:1 compression, rec port heads, "Gen 4" rods (all LQ9's have the good rods) and way cheaper than the LS3.

      The 706/862 heads can be ported and valved without increasing chamber size. Only Trickflow heads that i know of have a smaller chamber.

    I found a 6.2 sitting outside a shop that they took out said it was bad and i got it for 40.00! Took it apart and only found a broke valve spring i got lucky! Everything else looked like new. Dont sleep on motors shops say are bad cause some of them dont have a clue what they are doing!

      @@batasspp yeah but they put a 6.2 gm replacement engine in and that cost alot! For a broke valve spring, valve was not bent and did not contact piston! Thats bad business! If they had done comp test and seen no comp i would have took off valve cover and checked to see if a spring had broke right after! Alot so called shops that just throw parts at a problem and that is crazy!

      Crazy they didn't check the compression. It must have just been skipping. I wonder if they told the owner that the engine was bad just to be able to charge them for switching the engine. Either way you did a great job getting that engine. I'm 100% without a doubt, super jealous.

    You’d be lucky to have a junkyard LS3 for 6k. Very lucky. 6.0s while getting rare are much cheaper and they often come paired with a 4L80. The lighter block only comes into play if you’re serious about handling. No brainer to me.

      I bought an LS3 from a Corvette dismantler in Detroit about 4 years ago. Was going to put a Hot Cam in it, and put it in my Camaro. Paid $5600 for it and trucked it home, feeling pretty good about the deal. I started taking it apart to do the cam swap, and when I got the intake manifold off, I looked down the intake ports and saw large protrusions in them. WTF? LS3 heads don't have big bumps in the intake ports. I looked carefully at the laser etched part numbers, and determined that they were LSA heads. Not bad parts for a supercharged engine, but horrible for N/A. Apparently the dismantler thought he could sell a mongrel engine like that, and the buyer would just plug it into his car without checking things. I took the engine back, and got a full refund.
      Be careful out there! Buyer beware!

      @@andyharman3022 what bumps are you talking about? Ls3 has the spring pad and rocker stand stud protrusions...? Im fairly certain they’re practically identical, w/ the lsa heads being cast in a more durable material (cant remember specifics off top of my head) for supercharging...

      @@HerrPoopschitz There is a large bump down the intake port attached to the valve guide boss that is meant to increase swirl in the supercharged engines.     interesting, its almost as if you can get a ball park idea of what displacement change will be by doing this: 6.2/6.0= 1.03333. Its all about how well you can fill the volume of the cylinder in the first place. Waiting for comments filled with contradictions about head flow and cam size, as if we don't all know that is part of the equation.

      Yeah, I came pretty close in predicting how much more power the LS3 would make by ratioing the 3% increase in displacement, and adding a fudge factor of 1% for the higher compression ratio. 475 hp to 495 hp is right around 4%. The LS3 head has so much flow capacity, it's not challenged to feed these stock displacement engines at 6000 rpm. It would be more of an issue if they were running 7700 rpm.

    Great video! I was in it for the cu in comparisons. I am currently building an LS2 with LS7 rods and crank, forged pistons, LSA heads and LS3 intake with twin 61/65s, which I have dubbed a LSV for multiple reasons. My cam selection has been my biggest anxiety. lol At 402 ci and the Comp cam, I am guessing around 897/845 on my combo around 7 lbs of boost. A little much for what I was wanting, but we can always detune a little. lol

      Yeah but look how much torque it lost under 4k with the ls3 cam vs the lq4 cam in his junkyard 6.0l cams video. For 20hp gain up top not worth the ls3 cam imo. I'd be switching it out. Even on bigger motors like 6.2s for street driven.

      The increases aren't large so go for the sound you prefer. Engine masters did a test on H-pipes vs X-pipes. It's on UA-cam somewhere

    I pulled some trailers with quite a few 6.0s and I've never been impressed. Was hoping if I dropped at 62 in a project that I was going to increase power in that it would make a substantial difference but it seems like it wouldn't be overly much

    Found a car for my street/strip project! It's a MGB GT! I don't think I'll be able to use the early SBC 350 due to the distributor clearance. I might look into a 5.3, 6.0, or 6.2. The latter being an all aluminum motor might help on weight. Which do you think? The car is a hardtop version with a sloped roof at the back which will work good for the rollbar.

    Excuse me for going off topic here, but I am looking through your small block Ford videos and I do not see(yet) any that show the difference between an older carburetor head, a lower spec sbf EFI head (like my 94 F250 has) compared to the E7TE, the GT40 Explorer, and the GT40P Explorer head (and is the Explorer intake better than the Mustang / T-bird intake). Have you done such a comparison, and what was the title.

      I HAVE TESTED EARLY 289 HEADS (NOT GOOD), THE 69 351w HEAD IS BETTER THAN MOST STOCK w HEADS, THE GT40 AND p HEADS ARE VERY SIMIALR IN POWER, THE EXPLORER IS BETTER THAN THE 5.0L H.O. INTAKE

    But what I can't find out no matter how hard I search is if I bore my lq4 to a 6.2 using a piston that gives at least 10:1 compression using ported 317 heads what kind of power could I make I feel it'd make better than a lq4 stock piston with 243 heads

    I know this is kind of a silly question, but what would it take to spin a 6.0/5.3 iron truck engine to about 7500 RPM? If you used better rods and stiffer springs (And obviously a cam designed for high RPM) would that be enough? Or would the stock pistons/crank let go at that speed? Just thinking in my head a cheapest way to get a screamer LS. Obviously boost is better, but different can be cool too. Thanks for the video.

      Pistons and crank don't break under RPM unless you money shift. Also, 7500rpm in the grand scheme of things is not very high for an LS, 8000-8500 is what I would consider high, this is all COMPARATIVE though. In the 1960s, the L79 327 SBC was considered a "high winder" and that camshaft makes peak power at 66-6800rpm
      Anyways....It takes nothing to spin it out there other than cam and valvesprings. It takes a big cam and single plane-style intake manifold to make peak power at 7500.
      Small displacement, BIG CNC head, BIG cam, and decent compression, POLISHED CRANK and GOOD BEARINGS is the recipe for reliable 8000rpm that will outlast you and me.
      234@.050 cam, LS1 head and single plane 6.0 I built made peak at 7200, revved to 7500 no problem. Stock LQ4 bottom end, no special bearings or anything.
      251@.050 cam, 11.5:1 CNC LS3 head stock intake 6.0 I have now makes peak at 6800 but would make peak at 7800 with a single plane. Forged bottom end with good-er bearings, again nothing special.

    Can't you test the btr torque cam on a 6.0 or even a 402 stroker? I have the stage 1, 206-212 and I don't like it. It's too doggy for towing. And maybe throw some 706 heads on and see how much there is to be had down low at 2000.

      @@richardholdener1727Thanks. I know seems like tunner went really soft for me. It's not terrible. Wouldn't the earlier duration make it better 1000-2000? Compared to a stock cam non stroker I hardly notice the diff untill 2k. I am thinking about swapping it but worried 11:1 comp is too high for this little sucker. Runs fine as is no sign of ping.

      The 366 is an eight-cylinder, 6-liter engine. It has 300 horsepower at 4,400 rpm. It has a bore and stroke of 4.00 and 3.62 inches respectively

    What I’ve been trying to figure out is if I can replace the expensive L92 6.2 with a 6.0 vortec if mine ever takes a crap in my Yukon. Everyone swaps the other way, not backwards, all though you can easily make the same power as the stock L92 with just a cam.

    What is the the limiting hp factor with the ls3 motor? How thick are the liners in the ls3 compared to the ls1 motors. And how much can you bore them or hone ect.

      None of this will matter to you if you think 450-500hp is "a lot" of power, as you've probably seen from these videos the stock LS3 makes that power and is no slouch.
      The "REALIST" horsepower-limiting list goes Piston, then cylinder head, then displacement.
      If you OWN one of these and want to make more power, the "PRACTICAL" list is piston, then displacement, then cylinder head.
      For a real LS3 (10:1 compression, 821/823 head, car intake) the piston limits your camshaft size UNLESS you fly-cut the piston, because piston-valve clearance gets tight REAL quick. ~.620 lift and ~240@.050 duration is what you're limited to with stock piston. Flycut the pistons and you can put a 250-260@.050 cam in it.
      Heres where the practicality comes into hand, because if you have the bottom end apart to flycut stock pistons, it would really be prudent to put a forged rotating assembly in it that could handle 800-1000hp+ so you don't have to re-do the bottom end again down the road.
      Once you have a 250@.050 cam, the cylinder head prevents you from completely taking advantage of that camshaft size, so a CNC head would really make the engine come alive.
      Once you've flycut the pistons, ported the heads, put a NASTY cam in it and you're making ~650hp (at the crank), those exact same parts above would make somewhere around 700hp on a 408 or 416 stroker.
      Unfortunately ALL LS blocks 5.7L and up are throwaway blocks, they don't have room for ANY sort of overbore (.005" MAX recommended by many builders), so you could re-sleeve the block to 427 cubes and it would no doubt make something around 750hp (assuming 11-12:1 compression).

    Totaled my 06 TBSS in 2014 in 29 Palms. I was young. Dumb. Didnt buy it back after insursnce. So yeah theres my Ls2 motor with Kooks Long tube headers 1-7/8th with Y, Corsa Sport Cat Back.
    Had about 100-120k top miles.
    Junkyard somewhere in San Bernadino 😭
    Wish I bought it back!! So dumb.

    At what boost level and power level does a rigidity of the iron block benefit you more than the extra cubic inches of the 6.2

      Theres no good way of answering that question, because both engines will blow the head gaskets before block stability comes into play. 28-35PSI and 1200-1500hp. But nobody in the right mind should run 1500hp IN A CAR from a stock-sleeve engine regardless of iron or aluminum.

Especially when you get up to 30 and 40 psi I’m not really talking stock for stock more of when that iron block out performs an aluminum block. There are plenty of 1000 hp 4g63 stock iron blocks out there and it’s only a 2.0 4 banger

    I have a ly6 build stage 4 cams never dyno tune jusr base truck by the # don’t really match what hes saying the tunner say around 450 or so and has a full exhaudr headers 3”

    Not sure if it's an anomaly or just me, but it looks like there is also 50 ft/lbs difference in torque @ 2900 rpm which I would think would be more beneficial with a heavier vehicle to get it moving quicker/more efficient... this would also more more appealing to those folks who use their truck for hauling or pulling.
    I'm curious to see if how that torque curves compare from right around 2000 rpm

    Richard, I want to get into boost, but I'm married with children and don't have any money to waste. Would a turbo be cheaper than a supercharger or about the same. I believe running a turbo would be cheaper but I don't know about all the extra parts you have to use to get either of them running. What do you think? Can you switch the exhaust manifolds around on an LS and use them for the turbo? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

      You can flip stock manifolds to the other side of the engine to make them forward facing. It's pretty easy.
      Usually a turbo is cheaper just because how many turbos are on ebay/Amazon that are Chinese copies. There is very few blowers that are coming from China for a low price that are big enough for a v8.
      Buying two gt3582 random eBay China fans is a really easy way to get boost on a v8 and gives you capacity for 1000hp. You need some pipes for the exhaust and intake but fitment isn't terribly expensive or difficult. Tuning and injectors will be about the same for both the blower or turbo as far as cost goes. I can't think of a blower you can buy for an Ls for even double the price of 2 turbos from cx racing or maxspeedingrods. If you are buying a blower as a kit That comes with everything you need for installation it will be thousands of dollars. You can buy really cheap Gt35 turbos for under $200 each on eBay, you can even find some t4/t3 hybrids with internal wastegates for about the same price that will clip a bit of performance for some convenience. I don't know enough about tuning the factory ecu to tell you how to do it.

      @@timothybayliss6680 lol. No it’s not pretty easy. Especially if you have a vehicle that the manifolds won’t fit facing forward, most vehicles fall into this category. I’ve built a couple turbo kits, doing it correctly is not easy. Retaining accessories, ac, not burning and melting stuff under the hood and still being able to change the spark plugs easily and not constantly burning wires.

      @@Turbogto_guy flipping manifolds shouldn't make plug wires any worse.it's the same head on both sides of the engine. I said it was pretty easy to flip manifolds, I didn't say it was easy to flip the manifolds in whatever car you're doing it in. The truck manifolds are usually the shortest ones, maybe the f body manifolds are but the corvette and tbss manifolds have more downward output than most of the others. I think there is seven or eight accessory patterns with three different standoff distances on the gen3 engines alone. The power steering pump reservoir looks like the only thing that might get iffy with swapped manifolds and the truck accessory pattern. There is also fibreglass condoms for stuff you want to protect. Using the stock manifolds is the cheap way, it's probably going to be way more of a challenge than using dedicated fabricated manifolds. You can get them on the heads and have the hot pipes not touch anything.are you swapping the the manifolds left to right or are you flipping them upside down so they face forward?

      @@Turbogto_guy I didn't think about the plugs and wires when I was thinking about going that route. And I absolutely don't want anything burning or melting, especially something like a piston. That would end my trying boost for a while. I'm still going to try it, probably. I believe boost is the cheapest way to make big power. I don't see why everybody isn't doing it.     I wonder which would be the better choice for a daily driver where part of the goal is to try and get the best fuel economy as possible:
    A stock 6.2 LS3 or a 5.3 with rear mount turbo.
    Both seem to get similar power at the end of the day, but which configuration would be the better choice for your day to day, grandpa driving commutes?

    Aside of me removing the intake tube and shroud for room it was untouched
    The stuff on the dipstick was as hard as a rock
    A complete engine at this yard is less than 300 bux with a small core charge

    so one of the rules here in California when doing engine swaps....by law, you are not allowed to put an engine that originally came in a pickup truck(5.3 or 6.0) into a passenger car ..can it be done and no one at the C.A.R.B finds out?....possibly ..but do you risk it?... since the punishment is significantly more costly than the price difference of an LS3 vs a LY6

      @@Mis73rRand0m you can do anything you want to your car...no one is going to arrest you...you just can't register it in California if you are not C.A.R.B. compliant ...cars prior to 1976 do not require bi-annual smog checks so if you do this swap with a pre- 1976 vehicle ..you are taking a risk that one day when you do get pulled over...the Highway Patrol won't notice and report you to the DMV...and cars built after 1976 are smogged every-other year ..your smog test results(which include a visual test) are directly sent to the DMV and those results are linked to your vehicle tags if you have altered you car with a truck engine you won't get your tags ..you don't go to prison or anything..you are just unable to register that car ..this has been the law here in California for well over 30 years ..I don't think people are leaving today because of the law passed a generation and an half ago
      if you want to do a LS engine swap in California ..you can...you just need to use a car engine for a car..or a truck engine for a truck ..since each of these types of engines has a different emission standard...and if you do swap you can not modify the engine you are dropping in....and you must keep all the emissions equipment from the new swapped engine....I plan on dropping an LT1/T56 SUPER MAGNUM in my 1979 Trans Am...I just have to comply with C.A.R.B. rules ..no one is taking my freedom away to do this swap

      You don't even need to buy the LY6.....all you need is a gen 3 6.0 and LS3 heads and it makes the same power as the LY6 for even cheaper. That saves you EVEN more for a bigger cam, intake, etc.

    Richard, could you compare the ly6 with vvt VS ls3 witout vvt? with stock camshaft, which would be the difference in hp? I thinks that could have very similar hp all over the curve.

      At peak there would be no difference assuming Rich ran it similar to how the factory ran it. The factory ONLY advances the cam from VCT BELOW 3500RPM.

    Not necessarily true with turbos if you look at your test with the 4.8 flat top pistons top pistons when the compression was there it made really good numbers and they always say you can't Turbo high compression but I've seen it done and it works pretty good So if you would run the same compression on the 6.0 block it probably would make within 4 to 5 horsepower difference try that test
