Storm Peaks - Music & Ambience - World of Warcraft

  • The Storm Peaks have treacherous paths, powerful winds, jagged cliffs, and hungry monsters. They are also home to the storm giants, one of the oldest races in the world and the keepers of the titans' legacy. The two biggest dangers in the Storm Peaks aren’t necessarily its inhabitants. The wind is fierce and constant, and can easily tug someone off a cliff. One look at those paths it has cut through the cliffs and one realizes how deadly wind can be. The second danger is sunlight. The peaks are covered in ice and the light reflects from every angle. Up here the ice is everywhere. Wearing dark glasses is the only way to survive - otherwise a person is blinded every time he moves his head, and before long he will take a misstep and tumble off a cliff or down a ravine. The weather doesn’t help - it is either clear and sunny, with the nasty glare, or dark as night and pouring, with sheets of freezing rain, hail, or snow battering down and making every surface as slick as oil.
One would think the Storm Peaks were mountains, but that is not entirely accurate. They do have the highest elevation of any other region in Northrend. On the edge of the peaks, one can look out over Icecrown Glacier to the west, Crystalsong Forest to the south, Zul'Drak to the east, and the ocean to the north. But they are not mountains. They are actually cliffs. The "peaks" are the spots where wind has not cut away the ice and rock, as opposed to the narrow paths it has carved. Through large parts of this region, a person can literally leap from peak to peak, provided the wind does not throw him over the edge. Ulduar, like much of Northrend, is sparsely inhabited. The storm giants stay hidden, their golems don’t bother anyone unless someone approaches their masters’ homes, and the magnataur and wendigo are infrequent and large enough to spot from a distance. It is a good place to be alone with one's own thoughts, if you don’t mind the biting wind, the searing cold, and the repetitive stretches of ice and rock. The peaks are handsome in an austere way. Little grows here - a random bush sprouting in a nook along a cliff face or a few tough blades of grass in a crack. Everything else is stone and ice. Animals appear to be rare, and its unknown what the wendigo and magnataur eat to survive. Perhaps they eat each other and any travelers they can find.

This video reminds me the time I was looking for the Time Lost Proto Drake. I was sleeping only for 3 hours then wait 3 hours at the spot, then sleep again 3 hours if needed. I fell asleep in my sofa while watching a movie at the same time. The TLPD appeared, the music for rare mobs of my add-on started to play but it didn't wake me up. I was living at my mom's house at this time and she was aware of what I was doing (it was the 4th day). After many failed atemps and what seemed like an eternety the npcscan went off. The magnificent yellow proto drake soaring the sky alongside the white mountains. My heart bursted out of my chest and i thought i would pass out. Never have I seen such a beast alive. Tagging that yellow piece of hot ass and claiming my reward. There is something just perfect and atmospheric, so stirring about this particular track. It just....connects with me. (I'm swear I'm not PMSing) Wrath had some of the best music in whole game - Grizzly Hills, Howling Fjord, Sholazar Basin, even Zul Drak....

Oh...the hours camping Skoll to tame him, sitting by that disc in the snow next to the rhinos and protodrakes, staring at the flying blue protodrakes...occasionally flying around to his other spawn points...chatting with the incredible guildies I had back them. Days of this till I was ready to jump off the side of Storm Peaks and had named and made up a story for the one protodrake that was perched on the cliff above me. Yeah, I had gone mad with boredom by then. And then, finally finally finally seeing that cobalt blue worg pop into existence and hitting tame, and praying no one would attack him, and finally that tame going off and seeing him run to my side as my own beautiful pet. God, what a feeling! I miss those days.

I still remember the old days. Just logging onto my Orc Warrior. Finishing some dailies after work, into the evening. Before raid doing an HC with some clan-mates. Just chilling on a peak, talking over team-speak. Then going into the night for some Ulduar 10.
I'm in contact with one of them only. After more than 10 years. We will never touch WoW again, but we still hang out on an abandoned team-speak server, with four other lads. Talking of adult things.
I don't know what became of the clan, I don't know where they are... what they are doing. But I sure hope they are happy somewhere in the world. And that our characters rest peacefully in the digital graveyard of a server.

My memories don't involve the Time-Lost Proto Drake like many others. For me it was the slow buildup of goofy goblin quests at the start to warm me up, leading to the most mysterious zone ever, learning the origins of multiple races, passing by what looked like a god (?!) just standing atop a mountain, reuniting with a certain Dwarf friend who I thought was lost forever back in Warcraft 3, feeling genuinely intrigued by what I might discover around every corner like I was a kid again playing a Zelda game rather than an MMO.....all with this incredible music bolstering the mystery, danger, and discovery every step of the way!
And the craziest part is that I experienced it all playing solo many years late, around the time of WoD, and despite not playing it when it was current, I STILL got this amazing experience and consider it to be both my favorite zone and favorite OST.

I started playing WoW just as BC was winding down & players were getting ready for WotLK, so essentially Wrath was my "childhood" in the game and I look back on it just as nostalgicly as my real life childhood. In my mind No expansion will ever match the epicness & excitement of Lich King...what a time to be alive. I left the game 6 years ago during the Warlords of Draenor, I do miss it a lot but I don't think I could ever go back. It would be like chasing the dragon, futilely trying to rekindle the nostalgia but being let down at every turn, that would make me even sadder that I am now. I truly mourn for those bygone years.

When I moved 500 miles away from my home town, from all my friends, my memories, my childhood... this game, this expansion is what kept me and my best friend together for all these years. I can never cherish that time enough. Now, at 31, this auditory montage brings tears to my eyes, reminding me of simpler times, happier times. Just today, actually, my friend texted me, saying how much he misses WotLK, and how much he wishes we could go back and do arenas and BGs.
I want that, too, Kevin. Maybe if Classic gets enough traction, we can get official WotLK servers, too. Then, maybe then, we can bring it back. For now, though, I'll deal with being a 30 year old boomer patiently waiting for Classic to make its debut.

I get fucking chills every time I hear 1:54 coming up. The storm peaks were my most favorite region of all of World of Warcraft. Finally meeting the wardens the titans left behind, seeing their enormous structures. Being able to befried Earthen (alliance player) and Giants, those who were meant to safeguard Azeroth and shape her surface in the titans will. Seeing the corruption of the old gods again, feeling like realy being on the "roof of the world" and that our actions here really matter.
I never got to raid in Ulduar, at the time I finally reached level 80 on the privat server I joined to be able to feel like in my starting days of WoW again (joined roughly around the launch of BC but played so slowly, that I only got to level 67 before Cata hit) everybody was only running Icecrown and daily dungeons, with no respect for lore or people who wanted to enjoy sceanery or music. I felt the same way, that I felt when Cata hit, and I stopped playing, switching to a classic server a while after.
If I wouldn't despise Activision-Blizzard for their actions since the merger, I would consider playing on the classic servers now, but after all, all that is left for me now, are these videos on UA-cam. Thank you @Everness, for bringing a single tear of nostalgia and melancholie to my eyes.

Oh man... I was in 7th grade when Wrath came out. I have to say... The storm peaks was my fave zone, the mystery, the sweeping bridges at the terrace of the makers, and around Ulduar... Say what you will but wrath had some of the most visually stunning zones.

  • @GhostRavenFIN

Probably the most atmospheric zone in the game and this music was one of the reasons. I remember I'd sometimes just go idle in the Peaks while chatting life with guild mates to enjoy the mood. Good times.

Been years since I've played WoW but I still follow the story and listen to the music.
No matter what happens, if I and my loved ones are healthy and if I can have a quiet evening listening to this ost, possibly my favorite from the game, then life isn't so bad :)

Thank you for uploading this. A lot of the time I when I play I turn off the game music, but not in this zone.
I love the overall melancholy feel to this zone and music, the wind and other ambience just makes it all the more perfect.

@@lilpuddin1560 Oh god.. I honestly don't know if I will even have the time now that I'm 36 with a wife who has 3 kids and a new puppy haha. When I did it the first time I was only dating a girl who visited once a week and I had every day to myself.
I may do it just out of nostalgia though, I won't lie there were some times I would just sit in Storm Peaks riding the TLPD in past expansions because I was missing the zone. The music in that zone is drilled into my memory forever. I used to hate it because I had to listen to it for so long (until I finally turned the music volume down) but now I like it.

This expansion was so very good, it was sublime. Concepts, Gameplay, Creativity, Art, and Music !
Blizzard should hire all the people who made this, and put proper investment into Game. If they did this, the game could become an even bigger cultural Icon, played and liked by over 500 million subscribers with many Movies made. It could become very successful like a Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars franchise. It could become a franchise worth 2 billion dollars for Disney to Buy. Blizzard has wallowed in massive stupidity.

People can stan for vanilla and TBC but as someone who played the game since its inception, nothing in terms of sound really blew my mind until I played WOTLK launch. I leveled in Howling Fjord first and went from there to Dragonblight to Grizzly Hills. It was John Williams levels of jaw-dropping music. I'll always have a soft spot for Ashenvale but really, nothing that came before was anywhere close to this.
