Using a flashlight was like a game changer for me 🎉 I’m watching shadows of all kinds of stuff right now 😊 Thank you for sharing this video it has helped me more than any other explanation has!!! ❤
Oh, thank you for that, I really appreciate that it gave you an understanding of light and shadows! I know you are playing right now and that puts a big smile on my face for being inspired.
You are very welcome! I love sharing what I know and this was a fun way to learn, right? Who doesn't love a flashlight? It's like being a kid all over again.
Perfect timing...just yesterday I tried to add shadows to the leaves on my sketchbook but I just drew a dark edge. Then I realized that the shadow is not identical to the leaf edge but has its own shape and gaps. Interesting that you showed us this today. Thank you!
One of the BEST lessons by a watercolor insrtuctor. This is a game changer. Most say, " now I'll add the shadow, it is coming from this direction" but no more than that. Well done! Thank you....❤
I'm so happy you found this exercise helpful! The light was the only way to show you without a long drawn out explanation and it gives you a visual which is much easier to understand for most artists. Thank you for watching!
Thank you, Kelly! I love your thoughts on this. I also wanted to say how much I love Your "Rooted Chronicles". Today's issue was amazing and inspirational!
You are very welcome Sheila. I love playing with light and shadows and was happy to share what knowledge I have with you. Thanks for loving the Rooted Chronicles too, I can't believe next week is Issue 100 - wow!
Hi Kelly! You have illuminated my mind, heart and vision….so exceptionally interesting and lesson it is…worth seeing, drawing the subject over and over with different light sources!
Thank for for such a clear educational example. And a fun way of exploring shadows. I am A new watercolor painter and shadows…correct shadows really are a game changer and give so much dimension. This was the best video for shadows I have seen. Thanks so much for sharing with us 💜
Thank you for a very informative lesson. Your teaching method is excellent. I just came across your 2023 five minutes sketchbook and after a long mediocre artist block, I've been inspired to start one myself.
Ahhh, thank you so much, what a lovely compliment! The daily 5 minute practice will always give you something to paint and hopefully get rid of the artist block. When you start to see everything as a subject, it really does clear your mind of complication. Enjoy the process!
Thank you, Kelly, for this instructive and very clear tutorial!! I have been trying to learn how to add a shadow and your explanation was like a light bulb for me. Thank you!
My favourite part of painting; SHADOWS! Thank you for this lesson. Super clear and informative. I know at different times of day there is a change to shadows with the angle of the sun etc, but playing with that flashlight made my eyes open and a real giggle come out. Wow 😮! Super informative. What a fun way to learn and “see”. Brilliant! Any chance for a video on how you painted the actual items??? Love your textures!
I love that you have "seen" the value of experimentation with a flashlight. So fun, right? The fact that it made you giggle, priceless!! You can see me paint things with my texture in the Swatch & Create or Monthly Favorites playlists. Hope you find something inspiring there, enjoy!
Excellent information. Thought provoking experiment. I’ll save this for future use when drawing/painting.Great explanation of how light affects shadows.
Oh my goodness this is such a wonderful video. I never thought to use Lavender with German Greenish Raw Umber, for shadow color. I am excited to use this combination. I don't know if you have ever tried the very inexpensive Lavender from Van Gogh but it is a great color ... super granulating, more so that the Daniel Smith version. But, both are beautiful. Thank you for sharing all of your beautiful art with us. 🙂❤
I'm so glad you liked it and are inspired to try a new color combination! I will look into VanGogh's lavender, thank you for letting me know. Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much, I appreciate your kind comments. I love to share what I have learned and if it can get you somewhere quicker, that is win-win. Hope you are playing with shadows today!
The light shine was the quickest way for me to get to the point of shadows moving. You can place a simple object on your windowsill and watch the shadows change throughout the day just as easily and with more objectivity. Experiment and see what gives you the most useful information for the light/shadows process.

You are welcome and hope this little flashlight showed you how to easily form the shadows. Perfect timing for us both LOL

Really enjoyed your lesson and seeing your illustrations. Your explanation was so good. Thank you for taking the time to use the light to show us.

Thank you for the hearts!
So do you have to shine a light or do you get to know how shadows work?
