I cycled Skipton to Burnley and back yesterday. Got piss wet through on way back. Needed a final burst of energy for the Gargrave section to ride on grass.
I normally ride on the roads. Thought this would be easy because it's flat. Turned out harder than I expected because so much is on grass, and was wet and muddy.
Hi John, thanks that was a very informative video delivered with refreshing honesty. Please could I ask whether there are many gates like the one 4:35 into the video? It looks like it would not take a lot to make this a perfect route and encourage a much wider take up of recreational cycling, so it's a shame there are unnecessary barriers in the way. I'd still give it a go but thank for setting my expectations - gates and muddy fields will not be a surprise!
Dave, there weren't that many gates and I figured out the technique pretty soon after that point. Stand the bike on it's back wheel and push into the gate, move the gate and back out the other side. I wouldn't let it put you off, just do it when the path is likely to be dry.
Thanks John, great info, preparing for a LEJOG this summer with my 13 year old daughter, so this will be part of the build up ! I plan to leave the car near the start in Liverpool (?), is it a dodgy area? And we’ll then get the train back from Liverpool. Probably 2 days, hammock camping.
The start in Liverpool is in a housing estate which appeared safe to me, but we didn't stay long, so no idea of the overnight risk to your car. Good luck with LEJOG.
Peter, I left Liverpool about 1pm and stayed at the Premier Inn in Wigan on the first night, and the Premier Inn at Gargrave on the second night. Roughly I did 30 miles on day 1, 60 on day 2, and 30 on day 3, so it took me two half days and one full day.
@@jscal2007 cheers John.. We”re coming over from N.Ireland and want to give ourselves lots of time to look around. The Premier inn, Wigan is our first stop as well then the same in Burnley and 3rd night in Skipton. Once in Leeds we’ll jump on the train back to Liverpool for the evening ferry or the one next morning.
John Calvert No. just heard of police doing the L-L saying they encountered a few unruly youths about Burley area! That’s good, can’t wait to do it next summer
John Calvert Hi, are there any good hotels around the colne / nelson areas? We’d probably need to stay in one to break up the journey. How was it for safe secure bike parking and how expensive was the hotel in wigan. Thanks
@@Ben-db5re Can't remember what the hotels cost, but I'm guessing £100 by the time I'd had dinner and breakfast. Premier Inn in Wigan let me park the bike in my room and the one in Gargrave had a lock up. Didn't look for hotels around Nelson/Colne, so can't help with that.
The first couple shots (no pun intended) has been a dumping ground for firearms hahahaha. 0:28 is one of my chill spots when im in that area. So peaceful if theres no john eds about
wow rock n roll, great idea to do Leeds - London, did it up to Chesterfield last year, my first bikepacking trip ever it was. will go to London once upon a time, for sure. but first let's do the same, Leeds - Liverpool on bike, starting tomorrow :)
Doesn't sound as if he enjoyed himself in the slightest - just moaning and complaining the entire way. For him, more of a gruelling trek than a light-hearted adventure. Shame, as the subject matter has potential for an interesting and informative video.
Did Skipton to Shipley yesterday. Some pretty crappy paths in my opinion. Done all rest as far as Castleford wood bridge
Not been improved yet, by the sound of it.

@@jscal2007 Thanks, that’s good to know😊
Great little vid! Looked like a great adventure.
Glad you liked it.
Nice video thanks for shearing! I'm starting off from Leeds tomorrow and hopefully see the coast on Sunday :)
Have a great ride.
@@jscal2007 thanks mate :)
Great ride, I'm doing the ride once the lockdown ends
Gold Digger Dave same
Ben just building up my fitness and training for it, I’d like to have a crack at doing it in a day. But it would be a massive challenge.
Gold Digger Dave Ah, i do training on it from time to time . Ideally want to do it next summer
yeah! good luck ! I'm off from Leeds tomorrow fingers crossed for the weather :D
Do you cycle through maghull canal ??

Did you get any punctures
No punctures, but I did carry a couple of spare inner tubes, just in case.
Great vid. Inspiring
Glad you liked it.
you ride it in one day?
No, I did it over 3 days.
Him did you encounter any dodgy people around Burnley or in general?
Had you anyone in mind? No problems at all, thank you.

John Calvert That’s good of them, thanks anyway. What about wee stops? If there was no cafe would it be the nearest bush
Did you cycle through maghull canal ???
Name doesn't ring a bell.
It’s a beautiful canal
Is it possible to do it in one day?
I couldn't, but if you're young and fit and feel you can ride 127 miles of paths and tracks, then yes if you do it in summer and start early enough.
how much money did u spend?
Just over £200. Travel to Liverpool, 2 nights in a hotel, and travel home from Leeds.
@@jscal2007 ah right thanks for the reply so fast
Well done
Shame it’s not really suitable for 23c tires on a road bike 😂
I have done it a couple of times, great ride. I also videoed it, on my channel if anyone is interested. Your video was really useful when planning
I’ll take a look Mike.

No, he was having a wonderful time. It's just that Yorkshire folk don't like to be too effusive.
