@@wcsdiaries imo, the deadcat is a better option if you just want one mic and one windmuff and dont want to have to switch around, because it allows the voice to be recorded well, even in low-moderate wind conditions; in superheavy winds or when recording someone with maybe a voice that is more suited to the blimp, it would to a much better job in making the person clear, whilst also recording the environment as well. That is why the blimp can actually be used to record the sounds of wind very well
Nice demo - I have both full blimps and smaller dead cats - I find even wind blowing over the bottom of the shotgun can be heard. I will sometimes wrap a thick cloth over the base in heavy wind, but obviously better to use a full blimp in heavy wind.
The full blimp was so much more effective. But what it also showed was that the full blimp does a great job in heavy wind and that the dead cat still held up reasonably well, telling me that in normal conditions like say mildly windy day on a city street, where you could use some shielding techniques to cope with the odd strong gust, the dead cat would probably suffice in many if not most situations. Great test.
You have great videos! thank you for your insight. As someone who is just getting into all of this multimedia stuff it helps to get perspective from a seasoned professional. Arigato! :)
I have the Azden dead cat and it does a little better than that Sennheiser one in that amount of wind, but would still need a blimp in that amount of wind. I've been very impressed by the Azden dead cat both to deal with wind and remain transparent with sound. BUT, no, it would not be as good in THAT amount of wind as the blimp is. A blimp is on my list of investments. Nice demonstration.
Thanks so much! It's definitely a huge difference but I was honestly surprised how well the slip-on did haha. Didn't expect to hear my voice at all with some of those gusts of wind (including some clips where I literally was blown a step forward by the wind that didn't make the final cut in the video, haha) I would never use it for professional use in a situation like this but for casual videos it actually held up well at least in letting my voice cut through enough.
I wouldn't judge the audio too much from this because the blimp with the windjammer on there does cut out a lot of the high frequency compared to the simple slip on style. This definitely wouldn't make a good audio comparison ;)
Hey Scott! I know that I'm late to this video, but it's great! My only issue with it is that I wish you would've used the same mic with each enclosure, that way we could get an accurate representation of how well each enclosure performed. If both mics were the same, it sounds like the best sound would be somewhere in between these two, but seeing how the 2 mics were different, I can't tell where the difference lies? Don't get me wrong, this was still informative, but I guess it didn't answer my question - do I need a blimp or not?
Perfect informational video, thanks for covering the main scenarios, the dead cat was still impressive for the size, as a person who travels a lot the blimp looks a bit too large to be practical for my usage, although the wind noise cutting was quite impressive.
Thanks! Yeah- this style of dead cat with the foam inside can do a decent job for sure, unless you're dealing with pretty unusual amounts of wind :) Depends on your purpose too of course, sometimes a little wind noise is acceptable as long as it's not excessive.
@@ScottDumas Your videos are super helpful. After watching them I swamped an order for a Rode blimp to the Rycote Super-Blimp. We'll be filming an indie feature in NYC in a few months. Primary exterior mic will be a Rode NTG3. I wonder if I'll need the blimp. We've also got a Rycote classic-softie for the NTG3, and based on this video, the Sennheiser deadcat worked really well, hopefully the Rycote softie will be just as good. I'd much prefer to carry a deadcat around as opposed to a blimp, and the blimp does attenuate the high frequencies to a noticeable degree.
@@paulfairchild8942 Hi! Yeah I'd say the softie should do a good job unless you've got noticeable amounts of wind. Hard to say exactly just how much is the line between needing a softie and a blimp, but if you can feel the wind and are even a little concerned it might be too much, it probably is. Have fun on the shoot!
How are deadcat specs measured? MPH wind? How much mph wind it can handle before it goes really bad? I'm thinking to use this deadcat on Zoom H3-VR while driving around 25-50 mph, will it handle?
Great video, but I would love to hear a control comparison of the 2 different mics used in this test. Do you have a video that has these two mics in a studio, zero noise test? The Sennheiser sounds like a better mic, but maybe the blimp/fur combo on the other mic is cutting down on the high end frequencies?
Thanks so much for watching :) In this video, the audio before the Deity mic comparisons (where I'm holding both mics in my hands) is recorded with the Sennheiser, so that may give you some idea: ua-cam.com/video/IC0npNqvTAA/v-deo.html Hope it helps :)
hi , What will happen if someone use Shotgun mic with blip and dead cat and record the sound into the camera without using ZOOM recorder ? if someone does not use sound recorder will there be big difference ?
Hi! The audio should sound the same more or less but depending on the camera the quality of the audio file itself may be different (lower bit rate etc). Cameras may often have more noise than a dedicated zoom (or other) recorder too, since they usually have worse built in pre-amps. Also, these mics are XLR mics that need phantom power so to plug them into a camera you'd need a camera with XLR ports and phantom power or at least some sort of adapter like the one they make for the GH5.
awesome! its an incredible tool :) If you're able to use the links in the video description to purchase it, I'd really appreciate that too :) If you buy from Amazon, of course. Anyway, hope you love it!
It would depend on the brand since there are a few choices for each but generally the blimps will be more expensive. Slip on wind covers can go from $30-150 or so, blimps generally start over $100 at least
You'd be surprised how little % of videos people watch, and if they don't watch a good % of the video, it dies quickly in the YT algorithm. If I want to get info out there, short and sweet usually gets it spread to more people... of course, it's kind of a catch 22 that it's easy to rush more than I should sometimes.
wind rejection of the mics by themselves is 95%+ identical, so it's effectively the same to test how the mic covers work. Clearly not a scientific test, just a location test.
Huge of interresting videos are wasted by the wind. There is an urgent message to pass to the amateurs ! I stopped watching after 1 minute in general. Thanks.
WOW Scott, this was the most straightforward perfectly executed Video I have seen demonstrating wind noise. Thank you for this Video
Thank you so much for doing this test, it does clearly show that the blimp adds a superior level of wind protection versus just the deadcat/foam!
Thanks for watching! :)
I don't know about superior, seems to mess with the upper mids on his voice a lot. I reckon the dead cat with some editing would be a safer bet.
@@adamlee2550 agreed was it just me or did the blimp muffle the sound a lot?

@@luke5567 what kind of voice sounds better with a blimp?
You can hear that the Rycoat attenuated higher frequencies but is superior in wind deflection

The blimp is much better at stopping the wind - although what I really take away from this is how much better the mkh 600 is than the deity!

the standard dead cat sound so much clearer and on axis ! (bit more wind noise)
Sacrificing a lot of detail in the vocals with the super shield
I really prefer the loss in detail over the wind noise
The rycote supershield is really doing the job
That was really helpful. Thanks!

The dead cat here has a foam liner inside, effectively better than foam with a dead cat cover since it's purpose made as one unit :)
