I was considerably surprised with the MOVO shotgun microphone blimp! It has better features, more goodies, and handles better than the RØDE blimp. More so, the MOVO blimp is $99 whereas the Rodde Blimp is $269!
If you need a quality shotgun mic blimp for windy conditions, this is $99 WELL WORTH spending your money on, and highly recommended. As I said in the video, the shock mount system included with the MOVO blimp alone is well worth the $99 - I figure they threw in the blimp for free. :)

Outstanding video. Really excellent. Rode Blimp has been on my Wishlist for a while to match my NTG4+. Not any more. NOTE: In the UK and Europe, the MOVO brand is called "BOYA", and our European model is the WS1000
Thanks! Yes, like this on a lot, and cheaper. I thought I included BOYA links? I'll check.
@@BasicFilmmaker I bought one in lieu of your video. Thanks again.
Great!,
Not all heroes wear capes.
Thank you so much for taking the time to try our blimp out!
Very much MY PLEASURE! What a GREAT product at a VERY AFFORDABLE price! Thank YOU!
LOL I love the errors shown at the end. Subscribing to your channel RIGHT NOW !
Thanks for the sub!
Perfect timing! I’ve been looking at the Movo as an alternative but thought it might have been a bit cheap and nasty compared to the RØDE. Glad to see a really good, solid comparison. Awesome stuff, and thank you! 😉
Thanks Justin. I had my doubts, but when I got the blimp in my hands, I was duly impressed, especially at that price.
Super helpful video. I was researching options to replace my old PSC Windboss zeppelin, and this was exactly the information I needed. Thank you!
You're welcome!
@@BasicFilmmaker Just wanted to follow up to say that based upon your recommendation, I ordered the Boya (Movo) zeppelin, and I was amazed when I unboxed it to see in person how enormous it is appeared to the old PSC Windboss zeppelin that I've been using up to this point. I think it's almost twice the size! Now sure if having a larger air barrier around the mic does a better job cutting down on wind noise, but I do a lot of international travel, and finding space for everything in my luggage is always a challenge, so I unfortunately don't think this is practical for my purposes, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to return it. Don't think I want to splurge on the overpriced Rode, but I'm looking into some other potential options I see on Amazon. Thanks anyway, though.
When I bought my Rode kit about 5 years ago, they offered a redesigned skeleton handle that allows for changing the XLR patch cable if it failed. I had my Rode blimp kit in hand as I watched your review to allow me to directly compare it with the version of the Rode you have and the Movo.
Also, mine slides fore & aft along the rail easily, but it was stiff in the slot at first, and I thought it didn't move, even though it's designed to, until I went ahead and made it move for the first time, and it has slid easily when unlocked ever since. Mine also came with Rycote "Lyre" mic shock mounts with molded hard rubber/soft plastic mic hangers instead of rubber bands. The closed-handle version had mixed reviews back then, so I made sure to buy the one with the redesigned handle.
The angle adjustment has minor slippage in the handle I have, but you have to apply more than casual force to make it move, and I have never had an issue with it moving while being used.
I do like the Movo's addition of a third shock mount for the XLR plug, and I like the thumbwheels for adusting the shock mounts.
For almost 1/3 the price of the Rode (B&H lists the Movo at $99), that Movo blimp kit is a bargain and a half.
Good review!
Thanks. Yes, I need to mention in the description that the one I have is many years old to be fair. That said, the price can’t be beat. Thanks for the update on the newer Rode blimp. I’ll check it out.
@@BasicFilmmaker Yeah, that Rode Blimp is definitely an older version. When comparing products, they really should be of the same vintage, give or take a year.
@@frankfarago2825 Make your own video then
Great video Kevin! Super in depth comparison. That's the blimp I'm getting! Thank you brother! $99 is cheaper than I can 3D print my own
I really like it. And yes, I just checked, the pivot assembly is metal. 👍
Great review, you've changed my mind and saved me money
Great reviews! You have just saved me $170. Thanks!
Wow, so the Rode Blimp looks truly great. There are only 19 things fatally wrong with it! Not too shabby, really.
Great video. You saved me $179!
Great Comparison!!
Very helpful. Recently with my work I used the Rode. I was impressed it did not pick up any wind noise. When I looked at the price, I thought eek, a little steep for me. Thanks for introducing me to the MOVO - more budget friendly. I shall do some more research. Thanks!
Thanks Vinnie. Rode has since updated their blimp, but ti still does at a cost. Research is good. 👍
Wanted to take a moment to show some support for a fellow Oregonian. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks for all your hard work. On a side note, it appears that the Boya blimp might be the same as the Movo. Thanks again!
Hey there fellow Oregonian!! Yep, the Boya is the same from what I can tell. I added a crap ton of non US links for those outside the country in the description. 👍
Great review! You sold me on the Movo.
If you need a blimp, I think this is a real deal.
@@BasicFilmmaker incredible review dude, just picked up an ntg2 and I needed someone to tell me I didn't need to spend more than the mic cost haha
@@standarduck5860 Awesome and thank you!
The "Wombat" name is because the dead wombat is larger than a dead cat, also Røde is an Australian company.
True that Kris!
Thank you for your review. But I need to point to even old version of BLIMP provide features you mention. I assume you got it without all accessories. (Cord NOT imbedded in the handle) XLR cord can be replaced with any cord (special "cable bung" provided), handle opens up and provide full access to cable routing thru . Rubber grommet at the end of shock mount included in Blimp basic shipment, which provide additional damping for a cable. You CAN adjust handle position (you mention at 1:32 what you cannot). Anyhow, allenkey necessity is pain, and I much prefer no tools adjustment) Thank again for comparison! Cheers, mate!)
Thanks and Cheers!
Would love a new video about the updated RODE blimp vs the MOVO.
Will work on it, thank you!
@@BasicFilmmaker 👍 I'm torn between these two and the Rycote.

Thanks Christopher!
Great review thanks - I own two Rode blimps - one with the old style rubber band suspension and one with the newer "cradle" type suspension. Overall both very good for the points you make. I've been eyeing the Movo blimp just because I know the quality of their products (bought their windshields for Zoom H6 and DSLR suspension unit). You've sold me that it's not to good to be true - just so cheap I doubted it's quality -
This comment is a little late but I didn't get my Movo blimp kit until a few days ago. Tested it today in 14 mph wind. Works great with the wombat installed, using a Deity SMic2. I recorded audio with a Tascam DR-10L and its microphone with a tiny dead kitten and with a Rode Wireless Go with the Rode supplied dead kitten on the transmitter internal mic. All three work great. To be honest, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the Wireless Go and the DR-10L work with their respective dead kittens installed, compared to the SMic2 in the big blimp+wombat. I use the DR-10L and Rode Wireless Go most of the time shooting solo outdoors, and have been happy with the results. Using a shotgun in a blimp on a pole is something I will eventually need to do, and I am confident I have what I need now. No way one can use the SMic2 bare outside in the wind, never. Tried it today. HAVE to have the blimp and wombat with any wind at all.
A little clarification to the comment above. The blimped SMic2 was recorded on Channel 1 of a MixPre 3 and the Rode Wireless Go was recorded on Channel 3. The DR-10L was used for a standalone, separate recording, independent of the SMic2 and Wireless Go. I recorded the SMic2 first bare with no blimp shell, then with the blimp shell, then with the shell plus wombat. Bare, the audio was not useful, the wind completely overwhelmed voice. There was some wind noise with the shell alone, but the audio was usable. Audio was really good with nearly no wind noise with the shell plus wombat, regardless of orientation of the mic relative to the wind direction.
That’s for sure. Getting quality sound outdoors with higher winds, you gotta have a blimp in my opinion, and I’m very pleased with my Movo blimp.
I just bought one . (today, online) :)
In a previous video ,you did mention this Movo, that made my eyebrows go up. When I saw the price...I was shocked. After watching this video , i'm 'sold'. I have two RODE blimps....but, as I just got a Diety Short Shotgun.....( @ your 'arm twisting )….I know that the DIETY will 'live' in a MOVO blimp ! At that cost $aving, I will have no guilt about buying a third blimp. Very cool !! also I too like the color difference, which will also make it easier to know which is which. thanks for this video !!!
Thanks! Yeah, it’s actually, can I use the word, pretty? The cost is amazing as I was looking a another blimp. Thank you!!
Almost all of the things you don’t like on the road blimp have been fixed on the new version. The price is still high though.
Yes, I’ll have to mention that in the description to be fair...love all my Rode stuff and the company. Can’t beat the price though of the Movo.
Great review. 👍🏼 Thank you for this video.
Most welcome!! :)
This blimp is incompatible with the Sennheiser mkh 416 if anyone wants to know. I have loved it for 4 months until I upgraded my mic. The shock mounts are too big to hold it, unless there is someway to adjust it that I didn't have time to figure out. Bummer, since the 416 is one of the industry's standards.
Wow. Had no idea. That kinda sucks. Let me know if you find a way to adjust it please.
i always hated the rode's pistol grip, thank you for this. the movo one is worth it just for the grip lol
Super review.
I just purchased the movo for the H4n Zoom.
I got the furry one.
Do you by any chance have a video on that one. I think the model number is WS - R30
Unfortunately no.
@@BasicFilmmaker
Ok
No Problem, I just thought perhaps you may have tried the one that I purchased.
Thanks. Keith
This looks great. I have a very short microphone so the three adjustable sliding center holders will work much better. Thanks for another great review!
Thanks Ranger!!!!!
rode recently updated their blimp to solve quite a few of these issues.
They did! I am definitely a a Rode fan. :)
Great comparison! Thanks! How does the weight of the movo compare to the rode? It seems if the base is metal it would be significantly heavier. Does it make much of a difference in your opinion?
They are about the same in my tests. So close, I think the biggest difference is the cost savings.
good review , but you didn't test the rode blimp in the fan for comparison.
I didn't. There is no difference. Thanks!
Way better design and cheaper. It’s a win-win.
Thanks for the review. This blimp looks a lot like the Boya WS1000 which is even cheaper if you don't mind the wait on shipping.
Thanks Barry. Yep, I added all the non-US Links to the Boya.
Nice review Kev. I just added the MOVO blimp to my Christmas wish list....
Thanks Trevor!!
It arrived under the Christmas tree this morning and I’ve got my shotgun mic mounted in it already.
Sweet!! 👍
Awesome review. I think rode made the rode blimp handle not to slide to protect the mic from accidental hitting the front. They could have easily added sort stopper though and made it to slide.
For sure. Rode has since updated their blimp, pretty much the same as this one.
great informative video thanks very much , I would like to know how much gain you had to set the microphone at though ?
Wow. Sorry...so long ago and I don't remember.
@@BasicFilmmaker thanks for taking time to reply . sorry, that's my way of drawing attention to the fact you missed sharing that very pertinent information .respectfully hoping to help you improve your video production so nobody is asking you questions . There are people who talk talk talk superfluous drivel making their video longer than it needs to be , then there's the ones who barely say a word and play a music backing track so viewers are left in the dark , and then there's almost perfect guys just sticking with the pertinent facts and not wasting our time on fluff which you have done very well , except for the one thing l picked up on that you hadn't mentioned 😁 no extra reply is necessary now lv gone and made my own and it only cost me $10 for the fluffy throw rug l cut and sewed into a dead cat . its debut test should happen as soon as the wind velocity increases over 20kph
Cool.
@@BasicFilmmaker oh and my home made blimp is awesome .
wow, the one exception to "you get what you pay for"
I would have preferred if you did one outside with stronger winds. I've seen some videos on UA-cam with the Rode version that practically looked like a tropical storm and the audio was near perfect.
Yep. As mentioned, gave up on wind here. Was uncanny as we usually have some, but after a few weeks, I finally did this.
@@BasicFilmmaker this was what I waited the whole video for !
I am getting the MOVO Blimp good video 10:01 you said finally let's adjust the front one but it looks like the last one ?
It’s a good one if you need it. Sorry, don’t understand the question?
I would like for you to do a wind noise comparison, please. I'd like to be able to make a judgment based on the demonstration.
They are essentially identical except for price.
@@BasicFilmmaker OK, thanks.
The Movo didn't do too well in the wind test, I think.
B.t.w., the Røde Blimp is out in newer, much improved version 2 now.
This is so useful. Thank you!
Appreciate that! Thanks!
Esse MOVO é o mesmo modelo da BOYA!?
Correct!
No clue what was tested with what in the room with the brick wall. Seems like Kevin did not know this, either. No need to use a foam slip over the mic and put it in a Zeppelin and then use a dead wombat on top of it. I like using a Zep all the time, indoors and out. It is a great physical protection for your shotgun mic. The dead wombat you need outdoors only in high wind, or indoors with wind machine/AC/fans blasting at full powder.
Great video, however I think you have an older version of the Røde blimp becuse my one is more flexibel and has a very good implementation of the mic attachment, otherwise I do agree with you're review secondly I could not find the Movo on sale anywere here in Sweden or in Europa.
Having a blimp has been a huge inpact on my sound quality, actually the tool that affected the sound quality the most when recording outdoors. Keep up the good work.
Updated description and added Sweden and EU links. Thanks!
Will definitely pick one up before I do any more outdoor recording. While I do trust you that the wind protection is similar with both, I would have still liked to hear the comparison directly.
Hey Alan. Yes, you are correct, I probably should have done that test.
Awesome review! Can you remove the XLR cable and use a 3.5mm if needed?
Hmmm. Not sure about that one. You could use an XLR to 3.5 mm adapter.
Thank you sir, very helpful and eye opening
👍👍👍
I have an original Rode VideoMic without a blimp but with the included small dead cat. It is a dog magnet at the dog park, where the dogs will attack the dead cat thinking it is an animal. I eventually had to replace the Rode dead cat and I bought a Movo for that. It functions better than the Rode version...but still attracts dogs. The Rode version was not very effective out doors in the wind. Later versions from Rode with lower attack count may work better.
Wow! Seriously? Dogs attack the dead cat? If you're joking, I LOLed like hell. If you're not...well, I LOLed like hell. :)
nice just want to get my first blimp do you think this will fit my sennheiser mkh70 ? because it slightly longer than mkh 416
Should work, but not sure. It is very long.
I know this is a little older, but Digitalfoto made a Rode Blimp clone. I'd love to see a comparison.
If you want to see my rig configuration as we all love to see the gear I threw some pics up in my channel community tab. I mostly do tripod based work.
I’ll check it out! Thanks!
This is the old Rode Blimp model. It was replaced with a newer model in 2014 (I think).
Ah! I’ll need to mention that in the description. I love Rode, heck, I’ve got a bazillion dollars of their equipment. Price can’t be beat on this one. And....it’s pretty. 😁😁😁
Updated description. Thanks!
Great comparison. Always like your videos. One point on the end of the Movo 10:01 you mention adjusting the front support when you were doing the back one.
Thanks! And yep. I have yet to make the perfect video. :)
@@BasicFilmmaker Me either. I have way too many simple errors. I hope it will get better once I get a teleprompter.
The teleprompter thing takes lots of practice to look natural, but after a while, it can work wonders. I find that leaving a few small errors in for these UA-cam videos keeps it real for the viewer.
@@BasicFilmmaker I can see that. Being natural is hard in front of a camera for some reason. The videos that I make are Technical Training videos for a global company. I don't know that they want the errors. We have multiple layers of stakeholders involved, and a brand image to uphold.
I get that too. I made an entire university with many training videos for a company. I think maybe one day I need to make a course on how to do all that successfully.
Hi i just ordered the Bova from your link, this is definitely the same as Movo ? Look identical just with to confirm
Yep. Same thing. Thanks!
It is called 'BOYA," actually.
Cools. I can buty movie and zoomh5 6 meter cable , mount my recorder on boom or tripod and use this to boon my shots n mic.vim already in 500 bucks for zoomh4 and it's shotgun capsel. So this would be the way I would go. I use deadcat on shotgun, works not bad but this is allot nicer.
Yep. If you need a blimp, this one works especially for the price.
SOLD. Pretty much around the 11:00 mark.
Nice blimp for the price for sure. My original Rode cost me nearly $300.
I always thought that blimps were WAY overpriced and seemed like Rode and a few other premium brands had cornered the market. It was only a matter of time before a decent competitor came along to disrupt! Thanks Movo for making AFFORDABLE and HIGH QUALITY gear even micro budget filmmakers can take advantage of.
Ditto from me to!
Some of it is because Røde and Rycote make their products at home in Australia and England, respectively, rather than having them put together by underpaid Asian children.
@@skakdosmer I'm looking around and haven't found anything to back up the above comment so far. It's confusing to say the least. Assume its a troll, perhaps?
Great comparison! I've wished I had one of these so many times when encountering wind noise on my Sony C74. The price on this one is right, so it looks like I'll finally be getting one. Thank you for all the great videos!
Thanks Conrad! Yeah, I was impressed with this, especially the price. Still no wind here. I’m perplexed. Wondering now that the review is done if we will get a hurricane or something. 😁
Btw for folks in asia, movo is boya in asia

Thanks again. Updated links and description!
from the 70's (as far back as i remember hearing the name on tv) in the UK they were dead cats and smaller ones dead kittens, I guess different engineers in different countries adapted the naming convention to localised furry animals, but i guess in this day and age with pc babies we have to find them a new name to avoid upsetting people. emm, just realised I can 3d print myself a blimp.....
LOL Lez! PC babies. 😁 3D printing a blimp. Sweet idea!
Road is Aus brand. They just having fun
The MOVO cuts out a lot of the high end of the voice out. :( Dealbreaker.
High frequencies are attenuated with any blimp. Any blimp that doesn't, won't cut the wind. It's always Better to lose a bit on the high end than to get low-end rumble and overmodulation of wind on a bare mic. Also, the Rode NTG3 already has quite a low end, and using a mic that has a spicier high end works well too.
well, I ordered this based on this review, I have seen other reviews that show the MOVO pivot mechanism is plastic and breaking, hope mine comes as metal, and that the one you reviewed is an upgrade. if you scroll down on the amazon page and see Ben Murrys photo of the broken piece.. hope mine is metal.. Thanx..
I’ll check that review out. Thanks. It seems metal to mr, or darn good plastic. Don’t see it breaking anytime soon.
well it arrives sunday, maybe a little more thorough on yur reviews.. if its plastic, Ive lost faith on UA-cam reviews and believing all internet info is false..if u cant tell plastic from metal , then maybe a little more education..really like your vids, tomorrow will tell "Hillary"...LOL
did you scroll to see th review from Ben Murry?
Art Last No, but I just checked. It IS metal! 👍
Your Rode blimp is nothing like mine. Where did you get that - it's much much crappier than the one I have. Mine has Rycote stabilizers and other vastly superior features. Are you aware that there's a different Rode blimp than what you have here??
True that Mike. It's an older model, a few years back, so I updated the video description to reflect that and the links. Thanks!
@@BasicFilmmaker I thought mine was the only version. I see now... glad I didn't get the first version when I got mine a few years back... tbh, these blimp designs are considered obsolete, anyway if you own one of those new rycote cyclone dealy-bobs... they have setups for like stereo and m/s if you have the schoeps or senny mkh new smaller mics... What's the construction quality like? Going to need to see you driving over it and putting it down the toilet.
LOL! It might survive the toilet. Driving over it would be it’s end. 😁
It was 2014 when Rode released their updated blimp... It has now been 7 years without a refresh... 7! I feel like any day now Rode is gonna upload a new video of an updated blimp but... Still waiting...
That would be nice.
Movo seems to beat Rode own every product they share in common.... for a lot less

Movo 👍👍👍
Pretty dramatic difference on the vent.
Yes, really makes a difference for this that need it. Now, I’m just waiting for the wind to kick my butt after waiting for it for 2 months. 😁
is the movo blimp plastic?
Every blimp I’ve had my hands on, the blimp itself is plastic like material (weight). The rest of it, like the shock mount, all metal.
Does the Movo blimp have an extension tube for longer mics?
I didn't see one, but maybe @movo would know better.
How we can change the XLR cable if for some reason doesn't work?
Like any broken XLR cable, you would replace the jack on either end.
