How Japan Became High Tech w/ Silk Worms

- The most modern and advanced country in the world? Well, Japan is certainly at the top, but it wasn't always that way. Before the Meiji Restoration (1868) Japan was closed to the outside world. Before 1868, it was the time of the samurai and feudal society.
After 1868, Japan started to compete internationally for the first time during the industrial revolution.
At the time, the most sought after good with the MADE IN JAPAN label was ...
SILK.
The TOMIOKA SILK MILL and the JOBU SILK ROAD in Gunma Prefecture is the area where Japan's industrial revolution took place and between 1872 and 1987, the silk mill turned out the highest quality of silk in the world.
Today, the silk mill is on the UNESCO World Heritage site and a reminder of where Japan started it's tech revolution. It's worth a visit to see where modern Japan came from, buy some chocolate silk worms and see the remnants of an era past.

PARTNERSHIP WITH FRANCE
Working closely with France, Japan brought in the highest technology for making raw silk to increase production for world demand - to raise foreign capital. It worked, and as Japan succeeded with silk, it continued to modernize and upgrade.
The model of bringing tech from foreign partners, improving on it and selling the global market better products at a better price can be seen in the automobile industry, the TV industry, robotics, image sensors.
The area also includes Shimonita which many call RETRO TOWN because it's lost in time, a place where nothing was renewed and lived on in its original state for decades dating back to the Showa Era.
Hungry? The Shinokita Katsudon 下仁田かつ丼 is the dish to try.
The konnyaku is also very famous in this area.

He is funny too..lol
What makes Japan the best is they have the cutest, beautiful and effective technology while and still preserving the nature... Other country should adopt the way they produce and their humble approach to nature.
No
I love watching John's videos, he puts the spotlight on a lot of beautiful Japanese cultures and places most other Japan-culture channels do not, like this one. I've seen so many videos about the same topic/locations in big cities like Tokyo or Kyoto, so it's refreshing to see something like this in my feed :) The next time I'm in Japan I'll definitely spend some time here and explore other rural, often overlooked towns and prefectures
Okay, I was bracing myself when I saw the little food shop with silk worm pictures... thank goodness!! LOL
Dear John, thank you so much for these educationally edifying videos. Most other channels focus almost exclusively on Japan's cuisine and quirky weirdness, but you manage to create a perfect blend of local culture, historic insight and delicious culinary insider tips. Thank you and keep up the good work :-)
I'm learning about my home country from your video.
Even though I'm Japanese living in Tokyo 🇯🇵
Σ(゚д゚lll)
Good job
K.s Tokyo
I hope they preserve the town as a retro town. I like seeing cultures at every level of development, especially the pure culture.. (keeping ethical and moral) in Shape, Style, Form, Heart and Spirit. Susan, from Michigan
Been watching for a few years now, big fan!!!
Cant wait to see Japan for myself.
Keep up the good work John...
Thank you for the videos. :)

8:10 the view of the mountains in the background is amazing.. wow
I have been waiting this video John! Thank you so much.
This video was SO educational. I literally had no idea!! My goodness so much knowledge!
John, your work is second to none. I wish the U.S. could claim you as one of ours. You do a great job of being culturally respectful. There is only one other host I have ever found that truly met that mark and that is Andrew Zimmern. He is different, but he appreciates people. Your work is excellent.
Another amazing episode how can anyone thumbs down on this? I've learned something new again thanks to this channel. Hope I'll be able to visit Japan one day when I've figure out how to get vegetarian food there.
Wow. I love this. You style has changed a lot from your earlier vids. This looks like a really formal and elaborate documentary by NatGeo or Discovery. Great Job.
Big fan of your work, John. Your videos are informative and lots of fun to watch as well. I've watched a number of them twice!
I recommend Minakami Onsen in Gunma Prefecture.
Minakami Town, located in the northern part of Gunma Prefecture, is famous as one of Japan's most popular rafting spots. In spring, the river melts with snowmelt, and you can enjoy world-class torrent rafting, with many “repeaters wanting to come next spring”!
You can experience various river activities such as getting down from the boat and swimming, jumping from the rocky place when the summer water volume is calming, and during the fall leaves, you can enjoy a superb view rafting while looking at the beautiful valley beauty I can enjoy it.
It is such Minakami town, but there is not only rafting but also the attraction of nature such as Tanigawadake, so it is a popular tourist spot as a hot spring resort
Love this channel, these videos keep getting better! Thank you!
Japan is my ultimate bucket list item. I could easily spend a 6 month vacation there. And I can now add this to that bucket list!
Nice high quality video as always ^^ and again I learned something new!
Missed launching of this video during the morning commute. Another great story, thank you John! My Japan to do list is getting longer and longer 😀

Japan is so good at learning from everyone then exceeding everyone.
This video leaves a worm feeling in my heart

I like that old chef, he's so nice and polite
The charisma of that older restaurant owner is through the roof.
Even the Toyota was making mechanical loom before their car, Japanese industry really started from fabrics. Good choice of theme! (as usual) Thanks for great video.

Good morning John from New Jersey!!! Nice job with the live and new video!!!! Awesome job!!!!!
I'm exit 142 on the Garden State Parkway- up north Jersey! Looking forward for tonight's Patreon stream!!!!!
The process is slow, but I'm progressively getting better at learning japanese by listening to what Jon says when he speaks the language. Of course I have other means of learning the language, but it's never a bad idea to follow in the footsteps of someone who's lived in the country for 20 years.
Watch Godzilla Movies 🇯🇵
Cool! Thanks for showing us these great places!
I've always wanted to go to Japan. I absolutely admire the care and dedication they take in every single thijng they do. Thank you for your channel

your videos are sooooo good it makes me want to fly to Japan. thanks for this, Mr. John!!!
Very high quality videos and edits. I enjoy your videos very much sir.
Thank you Only In Japan for another great video😄
Thank you for these well made and interesting videos!
Great video as usual John!! I really do like when you visit these kind of unpopular (well I guess as a tourist's perspective) and historical places as opposed to the more popular ones. It's interesting and great to learn about.
I have some family members that are terrified of worms so that silk worm chocolate would be a great prank gag. I now anticipate the screams of children watching me eat fake silk worms.
Keep Smiling because you are in japan🙏
Alright. It's up. Thank, John
that katsu looks soooo good! Not gonna lie, this place ranks up there for places for me to see on my trip to grab some authentic silk souvenirs now
Very good piece because of the historical references.
always brilliant to see your videos !
I swear you have already got me planning my next trip to Japan !
Wow!!! Historical place!!! I like Your dance with Japanese robot:)
Lol the end of the video where you flip the mascot 😂
well john you really make some good videos
Amazing content as always!
Can't wait for the next episode
Your music selection for this episode was miles better, than on some other episodes.
Mathizsias I
"Silk" lingerie, vampires this video has it all. You looked like you had a lot of fun making that one John. I certainly had fun watching it, I had a smile on my face the whole time. Thank you.
Woah! That TV inside the window display at Shimonita is older than the TV in my family home by several decades.
What a fun video! Thanks you!
Greetings from a vlogger from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
On my feed it showed "How Japan Became High ... " clicked on the video and still wasn't disappointed.
Thanks for the video mate!!
Hello from Argentina, Love your videos and your lives =)
I spin cultivated silk into yarn and weave with it. The sheen of real silk has a warm iridescence-strong yet can be very light. Mix it with cashmere, and you have the ultimate in softness.
As usual John..your video very amazing and full with information..i suggest you do topic about garbage factory (etc how they always keep clean their garbage truck or maybe recycle garbage) and another topic about vending machine factory.
duude I'm hooked.
you have a very Discovery Channel/Educational TV style of narrating.
it's very entertaining.
There is an interesting notice placed beside John's dining table at 9:37. "I have a selfish request to all of my customer, I'm sorry but tea and water are self service. From the owner of the bad service restaurant." XD
There were A LOT OF funny old signs around this place :P highly recommend a visit here just for the signs! lol -john
Wherever you look is a great scenery just in Japan.
Ahmazing videos top quality John!
Great episode John! I can't wait for the next episode! By the way John in 7:10 you're funny-looking in your Vampire look hehehe! Anyways Hello from the Philippines! Have a Great and Nice Day John!
Really enjoyed the tour & story of this silk town as I love kimonos & got to know a bit of Japan - France history here.
I really enjoy watching you videos. The videography is also very good, which camera are you using? Looks like a GH5, am I right?
Thank you for your amazing video!
An informative video, short in duration though. Thanks John. My next on the list is your hitchhiking to Hokkaido.
What food is given to the silkworm in TOMIOKA GUNMA please tell me ❤️
amazing n full of educational videos....
I usually don't like insects very much but Japanese silkworms are actually cute. They are soft as silk itself, very hungry and curious little creatures. ❤🐛
Hello from the Philippines! From Instagram Live to UA-cam! =)
could you talk about japans recycling industry next 😂
Ana Banana hy dear u friend ship me my number+923117736643
That restaurant owner gave me a smile, such great energy :)
Hey John, the video was awesome... Came to know a lot of stuffs... Was waiting for this since you told... :D.. But the audio was a bit behind in time with the video... Thanks for reading... Keep up the work! 👍
Oooh very interesting topic! 😎
They were also exporting hybrid (F1) silkworm egg sheets (tanegami) from near end of Edo era. Like modern hybrid crops, users had to keep buying egg sheets to keep producing good quality silk.
Another great story! nice job.
The silkworm chocolates were so cute!
I used to have silk worms as pets and they are actually cute when you look at their face
The Katsudon made me drool. John you lucky guy!!!
Lol that dance with robot is so random and funny.
いやぁ~日本人でさえ知らない所を次々と紹介する探究心の旺盛さには感心します。いずれそのうち大学の授業で「国際比較文化論」を講義してもらいたいくらいです。
Great show! It’s like I traveled through time! (I thought that before you said it!)
For a second I thought those were real silk worms they were selling for consumption. I'm a bit of a prankster and would love to prank my mom with the chocolate XD
I love japan and I love this guys videos
Very interesting video as always John. The silk scarf was really pretty. Is silk more expensive in Japan? Keep up the good work 👍🏻😬
Great interesting detailed story John!!!! 👍as they say smooth as silk!!!!!
I'm Chinese and I, as well as many small children, used to keep silkworms as pets (and that's like 15 years ago :'( ah, memories). There were stands selling tiny silkworms no bigger than rice grains and mulberry leaves right outside the primary school gate. We called them 'silkworms babies' and loved/fed them until they decided to move out into cocoons and leave us eventually as moths. It's amazing how I was not afraid of silkworms while many other worms would scare the s... out of me.
Hiya I’ve only been watching your UA-cam channel for a couple weeks now but can I say this Japan looks blooming awesome what made you move to Japan if you don’t mind me asking. Your sincerely Lee Grant
6:00: I too buy silk lingerie for myself online xD
Well, now you know it's not real silk. Hahaha
Kombinatsiya hi
Burn the sample. Silk is animal protein.
Thank you.. Very interesting and informative.. 👍💕
