@@benkennington8941 I am indeed, it came out of my thinking about the way we like to concieve of current 'AI' as opposed to what it actually (to me at least) appears to be. I think it's been picked up on in some of the comments but Aria, as an AI, is an indescriminate mirror of behaviour and I think the mixture of such a machine, like an algorithm with a face, and a flawed free-will human is a terrifying prospect. Also I was about to become a father at the time and that quote really chimed in with my worries about having a new human in my care!
@@matsnordstrom5987 Thanks! This was my first and currently only proper short, I have another short and a feature written that I'm looking for producers for - I'm also just beginning to write a second feature that I hope may be easier to produce on a shoestring 🙂
One of the best short sci fi films I have seen in a long time. This film mildly subverts our expectations, but by doing so they kept the story real. And it is a story/message that needs to be said, often and clearly and compellingly. Thanks! It really appeared to me that the antagonist/"villain" actually was trying to do the right thing. But they were so short sighted that they couldn't see that what their actions caused more harm to our protagonist than any fall onto a stony pavement could ever do. The indignity of removing our power to choose inflicts a wound that runs deeper than any set of gardening sheers could ever cause. When his daughter finally.... well, I'll just say, Great ending!
I just can’t say enough about the talent and creativity of everyone who creates these stories, their actors and crew that make these possible. Every story, EVERY story has been multitudes better and superior to the crap nowadays. I haven’t went to a theater or paid to watch a movie in a couple of decades because of the quality or lack there of. Based on the years of experience with the quality of Dusts shorts, I would definitely pay a subscription fee for this channel. I would happily go to a theater and watch a two hour movie of Dust shorts. They could have three or four shorts per show. I hope that the creators, crew and actors get paid well. If they do, it is definitely not enough! Thank you, the creators of this Dust channel for sharing these amazingly talented and creative peoples work with us! Much love and admiration! John A.
Another said special effects to serve the story...so true. SF really is best when 85% normal, recognizable life situations, interspersed with tech. Also, as others said..well done students!
I liked your blend of futuristic holograms and life-like robotics, combined with the 2000s looking TTfone technology with extra large, easy to read number pads- especially when it was the robot using the old tech phone. Jessica Blake did an outstanding job as Aria. I enjoyed the performances of the other actors as well, but it's kind of funny to me that sometimes it takes more acting skills to act emotionless than to act out emotions. Probably because displaying emotions is something we all do and are familiar with, but being emotionless in situations that would normally evoke emotions is something that is unusual for us. I think portraying a convincing robot would actually be more of a challenge, and Jessica nailed it.
It's an allegory of what so many experienced during the peak of the pandemic. So many, for our own safety, couldn't go and see loved ones who died alone and on their own.
Nah you believed the propaganda and made a choice to let your loved ones die alone, many of us could see the PLANdemic for what is was and none of our family members died alone.
It's mildly amusing and immensely frustrating that Hollywood has abandoned making really good, engaging and immersive dramatic movies in favor of the same old fast-n-furious ridiculousness or superhero centric, waste of money, action movie junk. We have here in DUST great examples of how movies used to be and should be. I do not think I've seen one yet that didn't have charm and merit. Great collection. DUST is doing something very right.
There is amazing talent and creativity on Dust (to quote comcastjohn, below). BUT... Why is there such a predominance of depressive content? Almost every film leaves me sad, hopeless and full of dread for mankind's future. Surely there is an optimistic version of the future that someone can share? Where is the uplifting content that got me into SciFi in the first place?
Is it shameful to admit that I clicked on this video because the nurse is really cute and totally my type? Yes I know, how shallow am I?! 😔 Ona positive note, this is an amazing film and great concept. Visually and aesthetically pleasing 💜💜💜 Thank you for your dedication to the craft Jamie
It was probably a good short, but the music was too loud and I couldn’t understand anything. I had to keep rewinding just to catch a few words. Did the daughter realize the robot was a jerk and deactivate her? Why didn’t it let him make calls to his wife? So confusing.
I have those same pruning shears. They are much, much sharper than how sharp they are represented in this film. How sharp are they you ask? Really, really sharp.
Fearfully made, watched tearfully...😊 It's completely loaded like... emotinal content versus intelligent behaviour.... result ..emotional tears ..😅only missing were humanoid mourners in the climax...!
While it is always amusing to worry about Frankenstein's monster, the reality of actual care homes is horrific - low paid staff who too often take out their frustrations on helpless patients. As is always the case, we don't need to worry about hypothetical monsters under the bed, because it is we ourselves who are our greatest enemy.
I've watched this many times. Still brings tears to my eyes. My wife and I are getting on in years, but just a fire going, a good movie, this is nice to see. And yes, I argue alot with her. Lol
Good film. Enjoyed it. Sets the mind thinking about where we're going with AI and machines we make to help us. Will the machines learn the differences between the people they were made to help and actually help, or perhaps imprison us for our safety? I wonder though, is what we have now that's supposed to help us actually helps? Seems there's a pill for every illness. The doctor prescribes a pill but seldom tells you of all if any side effects that might come with it. At some point you may need a pill for some side effect which comes with that pill, and so on. People normally live longer now with the help of modern medicine. Does that mean we are customers longer? More money for the health care system? Would that be the way machines would "help" us? For our "safety"? Aside from my over thinking, excellent work on this film. Well written and acted. Accompanying music was fitting for the story.

Some are just a wild ride, you have no idea what's coming, and you walk away just going "Wow!". A very nicely done film. I don't know why it is sci-fi and I also wonder why Dust films always end in disaster. Will every movie in the future be considered sci-fi if there is any sort of technology anywhere in the video?
Deactivate or reprogram her software ASAP. Honestly, this feature in future Androids needs to be fixed today to prevent situations like this. I welcome AI but not when they can overpower their programmers and operators.
Interesting story, maybe in a monitored and controlled environment like a nursing home maybe artificial care takers could be applicable, interesting story though, however, being able to get into the mind of the elderly and empathize with how the world appears from their mind kept me intrigued. Thank you. I think we all have this general fear of what the natural aging process feels and looks like in relationship to the world around us.
Amazingly well done for a student film. The one aspect that might be of interest, though, it just seemed too predictable, like I already knew what the next lines, the next scene was going to be before they happened. Yes, the aim was to develop very strong emotional engagement with the characters and all that, technically the acting and photography was absolutely first rate, but it could have been shortened a bit, or some sort of unexpected surprise element could have propelled this production into a entirely new story concept, but no worries . . . as said earlier, very well done production.
The robot mishandled things, but if you've ever participated in elderly care, you might have a more forgiving view of things. This is not to say that the arrangement was in any way sensible, but then, you need to have things go off the rails for a story to take place. I wonder what the daughter whispered to the robot at the end.
