  • Joseph Campbell discusses the Greek goddesses Aprhodite, goddess of love, Athene, goddess of knowledge and heroes, and Hera, goddess of marriage, the Judgement of Paris, and their pre-patriarchal importance.
For more on the myths of these deities, see Joseph Campbell's Goddess: Mysteries of the Feminine Divine (jcf.org/works/titles/goddesses)

The path of the Hero or disciple of Athena is the path of the warrior/priest. The path of the householder is the path of the merchant/politician, the path of Hera. The path of the lover/artist is the thorny path of the disciples of Aphrodite. All paths require sacrifice. All goddesses are necessary for a functional and well rounded society. Each has something profound, valuable and unique to contribute.

Yes. And you’re not wrong… It’s just, at the same time, myths like these were meant to move you beyond the outer, public world and teach you about your private inner world. It’s a higher level understanding. Myths help you see how you “see” things. You’re looking at it from an interesting public perspective,… do you also see the private implications? :)

Now imagine if we'd have full access to these lectures for free, as Joseph Campbell probably intended rather than them being locked behind the gates of some name-related institution.

    Fascinating.
To continue in the supposedly patriarchal model - it's curious to note the role of Eris and her Golden Apple in this scenario.

I recently watched a series on pre ice ages civilizations and various legands of floods, snakes and the astrological allingments in buildings, artifacts from around the world.
I was reminded of the lessons and wisdom incased in "Myths" also the challenge in interpretation and implementation

In the Republic, Socrates asks who lives the “pleasant-est” life: the one who loves gain, honor, or wisdom? His answer? The one who loves wisdom. Because only they can experience all 3. The Goddesses represent parts of human nature. NOT man’s relationship with women, but your relationship with the feminine part of yourself, the right hemisphere of your mind. This story probably originally meant: The one who appreciates all three (the power, beauty, and love/honor) within themselves is the “richest” one in the world.
Jane Harrison is absolutely correct, and Erich Fromm also noted Greek Mythology changed to downplay the feminine. And that’s when the lessons people started to receive from myths taught them to choose between their values, rather than synthesize them. Ie; unite the two hemispheres and become whole. And now that myths became ego-and-left-hemisphere-focused, everyone, but especially men, slowly forgot the synergy (and the power, riches, wisdom, and thus - pleasant life) that arises from inner synthesis. Instead men were learning to reject, repress, and resist the feminine/right hemisphere beautiful, loving, caring, passionate, curious, unpredictable, “soft” part of themselves.

Does anyone have a reference for the artwork of Paris judging the three goddesses?

The image he discusses at 6:16 he also used in his Masks of God: Occidental Mythology, and he referenced Jane Harrison's Prolegomena as the source of it in that book, so I'm ASSUMING both plates came from her book. If you can get your hands on a copy of that, it will probably lead you to the source of both plates. Hope that helps.

These 3 goddesses form an archetypal character that evolves into TRINITY, in the MATRIX.

Woah thats cool to think about, knowing that the directors both trans sexuals recently mentioning that the matrix was in a way related to true identity or some sort of true self and illusions and masks worn, what do you think now? I have been wondering a lot about it myself lately would love a chill convo with someone else who loves Campbell works as much as I do. Best wishes

Keep in mind that the directors of "The Matrix" stole the story from a black (american indian) woman by the name of Sophia Stewart, as did the directors of "The Terminator." She breaks the concepts down beautifully, saying that "Matrix" means "Womb."

It's *Hermes and no, he's not depicted as black or as any race. He's depicted as dark, as in chthonic, as an underworld deity.
