Fun Fact: There is another version of the myth where Daedalus didn't kill his nephew. In this version, his nephew was actually his apprentice and they were both praised in Athens. However, Daedalus' nephew died falling off Acropolis, where he had gone with his uncle to work, by accident and Daedalus was devastated. The Athenians without knowing what actually happened blamed Daedalus for his nephew's death and thus they exiled him to Crete. So in this version, Daedalus is not only not malicious, but even more of a tragic figure since he experiences the death of his beloved apprentices twice in exchange of his skill and freedom. The more you know!
@@kilzack2634Many myths have multiple different versions. I have heard 3 or 4 different versions of the Persephone myth and 3 different versions of how Thoth was created (although in one myth he was always around and laid a "cosmic egg" which created everything including...space time).
I think my favorite part of this entire myth is how Daedalus just agreed to help the king's wife seduce the bull. Icarus and his dad's story is very interesting to me, there's a lot of different versions, and they're all so interesting. There's also one where, as Icarus fell, he laughed. He felt like a god, and as he fell, he laughed. He didn't seem to care he was about to die, he just laughed.

For any Tolkien fans out there I just had a little epiphany about Gandalf. When he was imprisoned on top of the tower of Orthanc he escaped with the help of the eagles. Does anyone else think this is symbolic of Gandalf's angelic characteristics or is this just a coincidence. My thoughts are that maybe Tolkien got inspiration from the story of Icarus and Daedalus.
George Frangoudes I think it might be a coincidence. Gandolf didn't distort the world around him (build fake wake wings) he merely called upon the Eagles for help. I think it says a great deal that the eagles were willing to help Gandolf, as opposed to Gandolf taking their feathers to make wings.
I know Tolkien was mostly inspired by Anglo-Saxon stories, and part of Lord of The Rings was to show that their elements were not inferior to the Greek stories.
Maybe... but Tolkien was big fan of other mythologies, so maybe not. Gandalf's appearance and his wandering for instance were in part inspired by depictions of Odin, from Norse myth, and his name comes from Norse myth too. ;) Gandalf is literally an angel in Middle Earth though so that's right on point.
The Rohirrim too were inspired by the vikings. Look at their helmets and weapons. Plus the speeches given by the king was very much like going to Valhalla with death as the main source of motivation,
How did I accept these things as a middle schooler? I mean, in a book, I just read "It might be weird for you mortals, but it'e run-of-the-mill with us", but this literally gets straight to the point
The rest of Daedalus’ story is actually really weird. He pushes his own nephew off a tower and a god turns his nephew into a bird. The bull was actually a gift from Posiden who wanted the king to sacrifice it to him, but the king kept it instead. And the Minotaur was eventually killed by a guy who got out of the labyrinth with a spool of string.
Among the many interesting and strange ancient mythologies that come from Greece, but this is one of the most interesting in my opinion. A man who strives to reach into godhood himself and his brash son who learned his lesson the hard way is such a good topic. Thanks for the video.
Wow, there's so much more to these stories than I had previously ever heard 😃 The part about Daedalus being banished to Crete + enabling the creation of the minotaur and how he flew WITH his son simultaneously. So cool! Thanks for sharing these wonderful videos with us all, Ted-Ed rocks! 🙏🏽
FirinMaLazaaar Yeah, but according to stories back then, moonlight was pretty bright. Bright enough for you to walk out at night, the only possible reasons they wouldn't have went out would be because it was constantly raining, snowing, or some other type of weather messing with the wings. Or because they would've been too tired to fly at night.
"His eyes seemed stone-gazed as he flies on the wings of of a dream. Now he knows his father betrayed, his wings turn to ashes, to ashes his grave" Flight of Icarus- Iron Maiden
Daedalus and Icarus were imprisoned in the labyrinth, not a tower, as punishment for Daedalus assisting Ariadne, king Minos daughter, in helping the hero, Theseus, slay the minotaur, not enabling the extramarital affairs of the queen. This was done by the use of a thread. Theseus used the thread or ball of yarn to find his way back out of the maze after killing the monster who had been feeding on the young people of his city. Interestingly, thread is the original meaning of the word clue. Daedalus and his son used wax from bees, not candles. Otherwise great animation and narration.
iLike2watch In Ovids Metamorphoses, they were in fact trapped in a tower, but the wax was from bees. As mentioned earlier in the responses to this comment, Myths have different veesions.
iLike2watch exactly! I live in Greece and this is what we are taught so since it's Greek mythology I think it's more accurate:3 and what you said about the word "clue" coming from the word "thread" it's true because the Greek word for "thread" is very similar to the word "clue". Glad to know there are people like you outside Greece:)
Evi Chryssou Still though, about every myth was passed on orally, so many mythological stories have different versions. There isn't necessarily a "right" or "most accurate" version. 3×5 and 7+8 are both 15, neither are wrong and neither are more accurate than the other.
This is one of my favorite tales that i often tell the younger members of my family (That makes me sound old (I am 15BTW)) . I find that it has a lot of meanings in real life and has a lot of warnings to.

This video is extraordinary! It's summarizing all the greek myth really precisely & really well. I know the story very well and I can say this video can summarize it really well for those who haven't heard at all about it!😉
try imagining the speed at which they would have been flying. The wind and the sound of the sea would have drowned out any warning if Icarus had flown too far away...
When you use a Bible verse from the ten commandments to break down Greek Mythology. (I believe the reference [in case you want to know] is Exodus 20:12).
a lot of people see icarus's story as a cautionary one, one that warns you about being consumed by ego but i like to think of it more as a story of passion. here's a poem about it that i found I am Icarus Many people see my death as a tragedy That is very wrong In my opinion, they did not tell you when Apollo gave me wings They did not tell you I knew I would burn in flames I knew, you see I knew the agony I would face And as I fell, I knew I did it for the sun As hot burning wax slithered down my spine, as seductive kisses of agony peppered my skin and muscle I laughed I laughed as where I saw beauty others saw pain I loved it you see, it was addictive And even Dionysus would marvel at my insanity There is no beauty without pain And now as I wait for judgment in the land of Hades I ask myself, was it worth the fall for the sun? And I answer yes Yes it was
Please please do some videos on Indian mythology too! There are a plethora to pick from and it would be really helpful! And amazing to watch from Ted-Ed as usual!
1. The author wants us to be content with what we have. To be smart and knowledgeable is not enough if we are not content with it. 2. I learned that I should listen to my parents and their warnings because they want the best for us. Just like how Daedalus warned Icarus but when Icarus didn't listen something bad happened. 3. I would recommend this work in my younger brother for he doesn't listen to anything my mother was telling him that's why he encountered many accidents at such a young age.
Even when this is mythology and therefore all fictional...Do you realize this myth is from thousands of years before the Wright brothers were even born? What kind of idiotic attempt of a joke was that?
I find it interesting how similar icarus and lucifers story are. Icarus wanted to fly but flew to high (challenged the gods) causing him to fall. Lucifer wanted to be equal to god (challenging god) causing him to fall as well. Considering the romans took over Greece I wouldn’t be surprised if throughout time Icarus’s story or Lucifiers story got mixed up through time
I understand the symbolism behind "flying too close to the sun." As in the myth scares people into thinking they can reach the status of Gods. But is there any symbolism (or any reason) behind flying too close to the sea?
The symbolism of the water is about giving in to your base natures. and in the ancient context mocking the deity of that city Poseidon. Poseidon was one of the most worshiped deities in Greece only behind Zuse. Poseidon was the god of the thing humans most needed to survive, the sea as greece is mostly islands. to do anything important, get food (fishing) or trade they had to appease Poseidon. Who was notorious for wipping up a storm to kill you if your offering was lack luster. The greeks believed you had to give a gift to Poseidon every time you wanted something from the sea. the payment scale was based on what you could afford to give so a poor person wouldn't sacrifice as much as a king for the same favor. the higher a person who faild in some vow they'd made to a god the more creative their punishment would be to serve as stories to teach everyone else.
What if... Daedalus also made another wooden bull, disguised himself in it, and was the one who had sex with the Queen? And that the Minotaur was just a deformed baby? That would make Icarus its half brother. And the main reason Minos imprisoned Daedalus is because he found out about this trickery. #fanfic101 XD
To be fair, animals were seen more like we see AI today. That said, I'm not entirely sure how that myth was so widely believed when anyone who has ever lived among animals can tell you they aren't mindless creatures.
No, only Humans are Mortals. The other stuff is just 'Animals'. ;-) To less to be doned in this title dividing finite thinkers from infinite thinkers. ; )

We leap from the cliff and we hear the wind
sing a song that's too perfect for words
But son, please keep a steady wing
And know your the only one that means anything to me
Steer clear of the sun, or you'll find yourself in the sea
Now safely away, I let out a cry
"We'll make the mainland by noon"
But Icarus climbs higher still in the sky
Maybe I've spoken too soon
Oh son, please keep a steady wing
And know your the only one that means anything to me
Steer clear of the sun, or you'll find yourself in the sea
Won't you look at your wings
They're coming undone
They're splitting at the seams
Steer clear of the sun, for once won't you listen to me?
O, Gods!
Why is this happening to me?
All I wanted was a new life for my son to grow up free
And now you took the only thing that meant anything to me
I will never fly again, I will hang up my wings
O, Gods!
Why is this happening to me?
All I wanted was a new life for my son to grow up free
And now you took the only thing that meant anything to me

My Material Science professor told us this story as a parable about the limitations of wax as a building material.
Plus the speeches given by the king was very much like going to Valhalla with death as the main source of motivation,
Wait...the woman tricked the bull to have sex with her by hiding inside a hollow wooden cow?
WisMicYal11 Enough internet for today.
Yup.

WisMicYal11 isn't that bullshit 😁😁
seems legit
How did I accept these things as a middle schooler?
I mean, in a book, I just read "It might be weird for you mortals, but it'e run-of-the-mill with us", but this literally gets straight to the point
You gotta wonder the conversation Icarus had with his dad.
"Icarus get the fuck down"
"fuk u dad"
"Icarus pls"
Icarus: "fuk u dad"
Daedalus: Fuking is what got us into this damned mess! Now get down here!
Theseus slayed the beast👍
Yikes.. the Percy Jackson books left the beastiality part out of the story...
Lauren Bennett haha yeha
It is a kid book

Among the many interesting and strange ancient mythologies that come from Greece, but this is one of the most interesting in my opinion. A man who strives to reach into godhood himself and his brash son who learned his lesson the hard way is such a good topic. Thanks for the video.

Wow, there's so much more to these stories than I had previously ever heard 😃 The part about Daedalus being banished to Crete + enabling the creation of the minotaur and how he flew WITH his son simultaneously. So cool! Thanks for sharing these wonderful videos with us all, Ted-Ed rocks! 🙏🏽

If Pasiphae were living today, she'd probably be driving a Ford Taurus.
Why not fly in the midnight
FirinMaLazaaar
because she had no gun....?
It's cause there would be no thermals from the ocean to keep them up and they would fall from the cool air
FirinMaLazaaar 😂
FirinMaLazaaar Yeah, but according to stories back then, moonlight was pretty bright. Bright enough for you to walk out at night, the only possible reasons they wouldn't have went out would be because it was constantly raining, snowing, or some other type of weather messing with the wings. Or because they would've been too tired to fly at night.
Cool Cat like he said, it’s only a Greece mythology
the way pasiphae even named her son with the bull "minotaur" like his husband "minos" is insane 😭
"His eyes seemed stone-gazed as he flies on the wings of of a dream. Now he knows his father betrayed, his wings turn to ashes, to ashes his grave"
Flight of Icarus- Iron Maiden
Daedalus and Icarus were imprisoned in the labyrinth, not a tower, as punishment for Daedalus assisting Ariadne, king Minos daughter, in helping the hero, Theseus, slay the minotaur, not enabling the extramarital affairs of the queen. This was done by the use of a thread. Theseus used the thread or ball of yarn to find his way back out of the maze after killing the monster who had been feeding on the young people of his city. Interestingly, thread is the original meaning of the word clue. Daedalus and his son used wax from bees, not candles. Otherwise great animation and narration.
myths are told differently and have many interpretations as the greeks often didn't know how to write.
iLike2watch In Ovids Metamorphoses, they were in fact trapped in a tower, but the wax was from bees.
3×5 and 7+8 are both 15, neither are wrong and neither are more accurate than the other.
you do realize that candles can be, and commonly are, made from beeswax.
It is so cool how so much of Greek myths fit together

Why? You are literally flying. Why does the hight matter?

When you use a Bible verse from the ten commandments to break down Greek Mythology.
(I believe the reference [in case you want to know] is Exodus 20:12).
a lot of people see icarus's story as a cautionary one, one that warns you about being consumed by ego but i like to think of it more as a story of passion. here's a poem about it that i found
I am Icarus
Many people see my death as a tragedy
That is very wrong
In my opinion, they did not tell you when Apollo gave me wings
They did not tell you I knew I would burn in flames
I knew, you see I knew the agony I would face
And as I fell, I knew I did it for the sun
As hot burning wax slithered down my spine, as seductive kisses of agony peppered my skin and muscle
I laughed
I laughed as where I saw beauty others saw pain
I loved it you see, it was addictive
And even Dionysus would marvel at my insanity
There is no beauty without pain
And now as I wait for judgment in the land of Hades
I ask myself, was it worth the fall for the sun?
And I answer yes
Yes it was
hearing and readings stories of greek mythology facinates me. it's weird yet interesting 😅

The place where Icarus fell is an island called Icaria ( according to the myth)
“ you have married an Icarus, he has flown too close to the sun”
I couldn’t stop it, I’m sorry
This is the single most important myth from Ancient Greece, imho. So many lessons from the entire story.
A timeless story. And still, I believe everyone of us has expierenced something relatable. Its sad to see that humans dont really learn.
I think it would be to not be too humble or to not put yourself too far down.
Oh that's nice.
it mean if you stay too close to moron you will become moron
The symbolism of the water is about giving in to your base natures. and in the ancient context mocking the deity of that city Poseidon.
Poseidon was one of the most worshiped deities in Greece only behind Zuse. Poseidon was the god of the thing humans most needed to survive, the sea as greece is mostly islands. to do anything important, get food (fishing) or trade they had to appease Poseidon. Who was notorious for wipping up a storm to kill you if your offering was lack luster. The greeks believed you had to give a gift to Poseidon every time you wanted something from the sea. the payment scale was based on what you could afford to give so a poor person wouldn't sacrifice as much as a king for the same favor.
the higher a person who faild in some vow they'd made to a god the more creative their punishment would be
to serve as stories to teach everyone else.
Heard the story multiple times as i child, but really love this one as a model to show others.
"First mortals to fly"
i didn't know birds and insects are imortals
To be fair, animals were seen more like we see AI today. That said, I'm not entirely sure how that myth was so widely believed when anyone who has ever lived among animals can tell you they aren't mindless creatures.
Oxford dictionary's definition of "mortal": noun: a human being subject to death, often contrasted with a divine being.
+ Jonas Anselmo rightly said hahahahah....
No, only Humans are Mortals. The other stuff is just 'Animals'. ;-)
