the video receiver unit connected to the back of the dash should be a wireless unit to avoid all the wires running from the back of the car to the front. Wireless after market backup cameras are becoming a standard
Lag for no reason
Sad to see a luxury brand like Bmw making cars without backup cameras in 2017 when lesser makes offer this standard.
Good news is all cars manufactured to be sold in the USA after May 2018 must have a rear camera by as required by law.
Mine is a 2011 and mine doesn't have one either.
Greedy BMW as expected.
" lesser makes" use a cheapy-cheapy cam belt for the camshafts which the owner will later have to replace at a huge cost or his engine is going to be destroyed, whereas BMW uses a much more expensive encased chain setup. I can continue.
Many thanks for a great how to video. I will use the information in this more than once. I have no idea how much I would have broken trying to get the trim off properly. I would have probably tried to work around removing various parts - and done a poor job in the process.
Can the oem integration rear view camera also be used with the CarPlay mmi pro in an e9x vehicle? Seems they might use the same connector to the head unit and I already have the mmi pro. I prefer the oem integration to the mmi rear camera though

you just goo all the way to passenger side trim and put it there. No magic whatsoever :P

This rear view camera is OEM, so indeed it looks like one :) It's the same camera BMW installs at the factory.

What if you do not have monitor at all in your BMW? Can you just use any monitor?
I suppose that it's possible to do but you would need to have a lot of knowledge about carputers :) Besides, the iDrive system is not just the monitor. I suggest you going to bimmerpost or bimmerfest forum and read about different options.
Thanks for the great video.. Big fan.. Just installed the back up camera for 2014 328i unfortunately it was the bootleg version the view is coming from an overlapping rear view mirror.. Will have to do until I plan on taking the dash apart.. Thanks new subscriber to your vids also JB...AND SWIFT.. Great vids and much luv at the car show.. Hopefully I will make the next one 👍

When you installed the camera to the radio/receiver was it a plug and play? Or did you buy a specific block connector? I installed my camera, however, I wasn't able to connect it to the block harness, there was no RCA input.

Roughly how long does this take to do?
Around 1-2h depending on the vehicle, as some of them like i3 have the head unit closer to the trunk.
Does this work for a 2017 m3?

What if your rear seats don't fold down?
Hello there! The thing is that the back seat is folded here just for a better visibility in the video. It's not necessary to fold them to run the wires. You can take off just the trim and there'll be enough space to get the wires.

Would it affect the warranty on my car if I fitted rear view camera
Hello Linda! No, it won’t void your warranty, but every country has its own local regulations. In the United States, for example, the Federal Trade Commission (www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0138-auto-warranties-routine-maintenance) says you don’t have to have your BMW dealer do all your repairs or improvements in order to keep your warranty intact. You are able to use any independent repair shop of your choice and can even do repairs and upgrades yourself using OEM, aftermarket, or even recycled or rebuilt parts. The Office of Fair Trading introduced a code (www.europe-economics.com/download/OFT852%20published%20report.pdf) that basically means the same thing for the European market. You can read more about the SMMT vehicle codes that protect UK consumers here (www.smmt.co.uk/about/consumer-advice/).
Now, if you install something improperly or use a defective part and it directly causes damage to your vehicle, that repair will likely no longer be covered. The rest of the warranty should still remain intact, though. Of course, no matter where you live in the world, we recommend you read your warranty carefully so you understand how to maintain your rights and coverage.

Hey, are there any requirements to install it? My Bmw has got no navigator, just the normal display 6” or something like that. (The smaller one), do you have to code something? I forgot to add: I asked BMW whether they could install one on mine, they said it’s not possible. The navigator will be installed though. Also, is there a way to mount electric folding mirrors? Bmw said they can’t because there’s no eletric wiring. Is there no way at all? Last question, I’m searching for an alarm system or gps, you have any tips? Thanks .

Did you check inside of your trunk? You may find a handle to release the back of the rear seat on each side.
