Awesome video. Thanks for taking the time and pitting in the effort to film. As a "Mainlander", that is a South Island resident it's great to see others appreciating the beauty of our island and its unique fishing opportunities.
I've lived on the west coast my entire life and hadn't seen many of these places before. Makes me realize there is still so much to discover in my own back yard. Great video mate, looks like you enjoyed yourself.
Watching from NZ, your very prolonged adventure inspires me to take more time to get out there, which I have not done for a long time. Thank you for making such an effort and documenting it.
I have just got back from 3 weeks in NZ with the family in which I managed to squeeze in 4-5 days fishing. Utterly breathtaking! To prepare for my next trip, every time there is a storm at home, I am going to rig up the rod with a 15ft+ leader and practice casting 30-40ft into the gale so that I can hit a postcard with the first cast…. The wind in NZ can be savage and the fish super spooky but it was one of the best fishing experiences of my life. Definitely a wingman is a good idea, to help spot but also for safety as I found when you are a couple of hours from a phone signal you have to be super careful as a slip/trip when flying solo could spell serious trouble! Great vid, more please 🤙
Wow, just wow. Thought it would be hard to top that first NZ video from Sam, but here we are! 😍 The South Island is still one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever backpacked. Brings back memories. Thanks for this.
Amazing man! Not sure at 62 I would have the nads to do such a thing. Love the DIY. Well done dude! That boulder laden -way up water, is to freakin good. Who does not absolutely love that water. Again well done!!!!!
Nice video. Some really great cinematography in there. As a first time DIY visitor to NZ I think you did quite well. Take it from someone who have visited the SI eight times. You really have to adjust expectations when coming to NZ. It's not a FF'ing destionation of quantity, but rather quality. I think the locals would agree that a 3-fish-day is a good day and a +5-fish day is exceptional. Especially if you are on your own. You will enevitably get skunked and it is not only a matter of how skillfull a flyfisher you are. It's just the name of the game.
Some of the rivers he fished are tributaries of bigger rivers in the region. These larger rivers are the trout nurseries and have an abundance of small to medium fish. The upper reaches and tributaries are often dominated by the larger, older fish. I used to fish the larger rivers quite often and there are stacks of small to medium trout.
a scot from brisbane i must be alergic to the sand flies the first time greymouth district eaten alive second time with a bit of knowlege overcome the problem , great fishing
That is an extremely special place for a lot of people in the region. I hate to be that guy but its never been documented as far as i know. I really hope this doesnt add to the already high pressure the place recieves. Great vid none the less. 😊
Hi, I live an hours drive from river 3. It has a low profile amongst anglers and I hope it stays this way. Please ensure you have removed all geolocation data from your video!! How many years ago was this? It certainly wasn't this year as the weather has been awful up until now and the cicadas aren't doing their thing yet.
Love the honesty in your presentation of your trip. Perseverance pays off!
What an amazing adventure! Thanks for sharing!
Really enjoying your presentation of the experience. Thanks.
Gorgeous nature and such beautiful fish, two hours of pure joy. 👍 Thank you! 😊
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your learning curve, your frustrations and your moments of delight. What a country!
Thanks for watching! Frustration was all worth it in the end
Thanks for both the first episode and this video, I watched them on the big screen from start to finish. Really liked the presentation.
Awesome video. Thanks for taking the time and pitting in the effort to film. As a "Mainlander", that is a South Island resident it's great to see others appreciating the beauty of our island and its unique fishing opportunities.
Thanks for watching, the South Island was the most spectacular place I’ve ever been!

There’s so much to explore down there!

Haha I agree next time I’ll be practicing a lot more before I head down. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! I can say the same about the South Island
Awesome series! feeds my insatiable want to get out there
Epic trip! It was interesting watching your casting improve as the video progressed. Great job!
Loving your videos. Stunning mate keep it up .

Great video! Makes me wish I was in the South Island right now! Great work! Looks like you are having a wicked time!
It was the time of my life!
These are becoming my favorite yet! Well done, Sam!
Thank you!
Nice job, Sam

The last river was one of the best I’ve ever seen, I agree!
Love the quality of this video! You got my support brother

Quality over quantity for sure, I feel like I did pretty well. But those rivers are tricky!
This guy gets after it!
I've just started fly fishing I'm in that same boat lols landing and netting fish good fun though love it good battle mate
Great video and super helpful/encouraging as I start a 6 week solo camping and fishing adventure in the SI in a couple of weeks
Awesome good luck! If you want any tips feel free to reach out
Ok. Have to stop and watch this later on the big screen. 😂
Big screen is definitely the way to go!
Currently in NZ for a few months .. hoping for similar experiences
Love the vids
Hi mate, is it easy to get day permits or dont you need?
Great video
Some places you need special permits but most just a fishing license
Great trip Sam!
At 20:15 that fish looks like a Landlocked Salmon! Spots are more like X’s than round trout spots.
Does look a little different! But no landlocked salmon down there to my knowledge
Interesting. We will be on SI Dec and Jan of '25. Very much looking forward to it. Any recommendations for flies I MUST tie?
Parachute Adams, Blowfly, Cicada, small gold-bead Pheasant Tail. That’s almost all I used, good luck!
@@FLYALLSZN Awesome, thank you. Those are all on my "tying" list. What about sizes? And Sam I'm guessing you are originally from Western MA?
Amazing fish and what an amazing trip! How healthy is a fishery when there only seem to be big fish?
I was wondering the same.
There are smaller fish but I didn’t spend time fishing those spots

He never said the names of the rivers, I live on the west coast and had difficulty figuring out exactly where he was for a while.
Awesome trip mate well done NZ might look easy at times but can be challenging as well but always worth it I love it
There been some big browns caught in Rotorua these last few week 8/9 lb browns going up the streams
WHat rig did you find worked best?
Have you a like a 3inch dropper with a dry with like a few feet to the weighted nymph on the tip?

I agree it’s a special place and I purposefully didn’t provide any info on the location! This was a couple years ago
Am I tripping, or have I seen some of these recent videos before? Swear I've watched this.
There is a second NZ video out
❤🎉
I am guessing you still in NZ??? I am in Tasman, Top of The South and am flyfishing south for the next few months. PM me.
Unfortunately this was in the past, but thanks for the offer!
What happened to the other dude? Did he sell the channel?
Mike posted a video one week ago!
krispy
You must do so much extra walking to go back and pick up your camera lol
Haha you bet
Schlechte Sprech Qualität, ist das ein Nachrichtensprecher😅
Entschuldigung 😬
how could you be so bad at using a net? lol
Haha fast current, big/strong fish, too small a net…but yes not my best work, hoped some people would get a laugh out of it
Who cares? Dude killed it on the water.
