Pull the handle don't push and double check the jaws are engaged before moving Infront of them. I have two of these plates and the strainers with 6 metre chains. Get a fence tight like most people wouldn't believe possible.

Is there an advantage to use the chain strainers over come alongs?

Night and day difference in my opinion. The chain strainers are purpose-built, quality tools and you're only limited by the length of your chain. To be honest I'd even prefer a chain strainer over a come along for non-fence applications as well.
