  • Wayne Scott, Jaguar Enthusiast Magazine Editor interviews David Marks, JEC Technical Advisor and Proprietor of David Marks Garages.
In 1992, Jaguar had never made a production estate car, although they went on to make the X-TYPE estate in 2004 and the XF Sportbrake in 2012.
Earlier, Sir William Lyons had become interested in developing an estate car based on the successful XJ saloon. In his retirement, he experimented with sticks and string on his personal XJ but it was nothing more than experimentation. Then, there were several private coachbuilt conversions of the S3 XJ6 and XJ-S like the Lynx Eventer but these were rare and often expensive options.
By the late 1980s, Jaguar had become more interested in developing an estate car, based on the new XJ40. This was an official project undertaken by the Design and Engineering Centre at Whitley and resulted in an XJ40 ‘Shooting Brake’ which was seriously considered for production before fears over costs and market confidence canned the project.
One car was built however and is now owned by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, but has been out of action for the best part of two decades.
Now, in partnership with the Jaguar Enthusiasts’ Club and David Marks Garages, the car has undergone a recent recommissioning and is now back on the road. The Club and David Marks have had a long history with the car having taken part in the JEC’s Entente Cordial trip with it during the 1990s. Since then, the car has covered only a few hundred miles, with just over 7K on the clock since it was completed at Whitley.
It was displayed in the JDHT collection with a Perspex bonnet for many years, its original steel bonnet has now been reinstalled as part of the recommissioning. The braking system has been overhauled and a full programme of maintenance and repair work carried out ready for the car to be used on the road once more.
The car was unveiled with a new MoT having driven on the road for the first time in many years at the British Motor Museum, Gaydon on 6th April 2024 outside the JDHT collection during the Jaguar Breakfast Club Meeting that featured a celebratory display dedicated to the XJ40.
Further work, including an overhaul of the self-levelling suspension system, will now be carried out with enthusiasts able to follow the project in its various stages through the pages of Jaguar Enthusiast Magazine in the coming months.

Brings back memories. I actually drove that car in the late 90's from in front of the Browns lane office block back to inside the factory where some of the heritage cars were stored.

It's a pity that this didn't go into production. It really holds together as a design.

Dave Marks, best mechanic I ever met, and a straightforward , honest bloke. He knows XJ40s inside out and always had an answer to my XJ40 problems. The XJ40 was a most underrated model, but was actually a quantum leap from the previous models with massively improved MPG and corrosion resistance. Don't believe the hype, they are a great cat car for little money. Maybe it's time I bought another!

Wonderful car, fast, quiet, great suspension, and road holding.
Edit: could you point me in your mechanics direction as my mate has some odd spare parts problems.

It is quite amazing that a company that had some very good looking cars only produced 2 estates (X type and XF). This simply meant that anyone planning to use their car outside work, needed to look elsewhere and excluding most possible purchasers.
The major problem with Jaguar is the astonishingly blinkered view of the car market. By all means make cars in Coventry, but do not let Coventry anywhere near car definition.

It's an absolute shame Jaguar have withdrawn the XJ model from their fleet, especially as they're going all electric in response to the so-called 'green' agenda. There's an old saying about putting your eggs in one basket of which we can see the results today.

Agree. The current lineup and engine choice is nothing short of abysmal.
I'm terribly afraid the brand won't be around for long.
The essence has been diluted to such a point that it's no longer a meaningful car brand.

While cool, the XJ40 was looking ancient by the time this would have been available to buy, and would have had to be sold concurrently with the X300 to have had any lifespan. Comparisons against an E39 BMW or W210 Benz estate would likely not have been kind.

  • @jabberwockytdi8901
    @jabberwockytdi8901 2 місяці тому

X300 is based on the same platform/body structure as XJ40, there was really no tecnichal reason - it's a money/business case issue - why X300 shouldn't have had an estate based on the work on the XJ40 version. Jaguar have always struggled with making the case for an estate model , even though the german competition were often selling up to 50% estates. When they have later produced estates - X , XF, they haven't sold as well as you might expect, so looks like Jaguar customers just aren't looking for an estate and they haven't been able to attract people over from other brands to any great extent.

Why would it need to be a practical prototype? It should have its original air suspension system restored to as functional as it ever was. The owner or keeper of the peculiar Jag heritage piece can go up the Beejam or Do-It-All in a bog-standard Granada estate or something even more common.

The ugliest car ever built was the E Type, it went catastrophically down hill after that. I think Ferraris joke about it being beautiful was let the designers think they had carte Blanche. In fairness to Ferrari his comment were designed to push Jaguar into having the E Type as its holy grail and it effectively bankrupted them.
