Awesome vid! Might just be sold on them. How different do they sound from the stock PRS pups? I have an SE 277 baritone and I wanna try something different in the bridge. I want something with a bit more character in the lower-mid mids and a bit more output and more chnk chnk on not too much amp gain, would these (or perhaps black hawks) do the trick?
I actually recently played a SE277 and these do sound quite a bit different to my ears. To me the low end is tighter and more clear with the Impulses and it has more upper mid articulation. The PRS pickups felt more “spongy” if that make sense. The black hawks are more of an active sound with more output. Both are great, but different. I actually have my set up for sale on Reverb now if you wanted to check them out. I don’t play the lower tuned heavy stuff as much anymore. That’s why I’m letting them go. reverb.com/item/45009897-bare-knuckle-impulse-calibrated-set-2017-zebra?
@@ProducerDudes Thanks for the reply! How much more top end and active-ness do the black hawks have? Cuz the more output and more mid character sounds good to me, but the internet has made me believe that there might be some terrible quality in the more active sound. That being said I have finally pushed myself to realize I don't want vintage pups but something modern and clear, so maybe active isn't bad for me either. Also I would totally just get the ones you've put up but I'm looking to only replace the bridge, also I'm in EU so I can find them somewhere where they'll ship quicker.
@@binchsoda no problem! I love talking about this stuff. From what I recall the main reason the black hawks were created was to make a pickup with the aggressive nature of an active pickup but, more dynamic and less of the unwanted “processed/ice pick” frequencies you often can find with actives. Also, I remember the black hawks having a ceramic and Alnico V option. Generally, I like Alnico pickups because they feel more natural to me, but the ceramics are tighter and a little more focused so they might be more what you want. The Impulses actually aren’t very hot in comparison to a lot of more metal oriented pickups because the idea is to let the amp plus boost or modeler do the work with the gain, and you provide a nice amount of signal colored the way you want it. There is no right or wrong way to go about it, everyone has the preference and what works for them.
@@ProducerDudes thanks for the info! At the moment I'm pretty sold on the Black Hawks, the more I look, the more I believe the output and aggressive sound might be what I'm looking for. Thanks!
@@ProducerDudes A little update, I ordered it and finally got it, been playing for a few days now and its great. I'm not much of a "djent" guy but I couldnt actually djent properly and I thought it was my technique until I tried this pickup. It's really tight but not too bright, also it sounds really different when I set it to different hights, like when it's closer to strings its super compressed but further away it has a really nice low mid sound to it. Overall I'm really happy with the upgrade. As with any change I'm still getting used to it and figuring out how I want to set the rest of my gear but they sound really good. Just a really agressive but smooth pickup. And does great post rock/post metal tones too, especially when I lower it a bit. And the low notes are super clear too. And actually, the mids are really good, I thought it would be a bit more scooped but I really like how present the mids are, not too much but the frequency is just where I like it. Thanks so much for helping with the decision hehe
Hi there, just want to ask if you can elaborate on what you mean when you said the Impulses are different and more 'balanced' than the blackhawks, currently trying to decide between the two...
Guo Jacob No problem! The Blackhawks have a more defined eq curve more upper midrange and a tighter response in the low end. Where the the low, mid, and high end response in the impulses is pretty similar across the board. They are super clear and defined, but still balanced. The Blackhawks have their specific EQ curve and response. If you like the sound of them, awesome (and they do sound great to my ears) but if not, you are going to have a hard time shaping your sound away from the inherent tone they possess, if that makes any sense. To me the impulses are more versatile and can do a lot of things where as the Blackhawks are more niche and focus on doing a few things (higher gain tones) well.
I own the TC50 combo. the Impulse sound very similar to the aftermath
The neck pickup sounds are just awesome here. With your pickup splitting here, are the inside or outside coils split?
Would have been more helpful if there was a baseline tone to compare it to. Like before and after. Great playing, and tone as usual!
I swear this is pretty the only PRS guitar that I have loved the looks of
Super Cool! Have a nice Day :)
