  • The twin-cylinder boxer engine of the new R 1250 GS fascinates in its diversity right from the very first moment. Its character is unmistakable - in every engine speed range. It offers you increased performance and smooth running at low speeds at the same time. The BMW ShiftCam variable camshaft control ensures more powerful torque curve over the entire engine speed range, providing greater control in every riding situation. Giving you power whenever you need it. More cubic capacity, more power - with higher efficiency. The strong performance with fewer gear changes gives you sovereignty. In short: You feel the boxer's energy even more directly. http:\\www.bmw-motorrad.com/r1250gs

    Adding another 50ccs to the engine is phenomenal when it comes to power! 4 valves per cylinder is a huge improvement too! This Bike is going to take you places! The trick is to learn how to make the engine do its best without delivering too much power for the need that's presented. Great job R&D department! It is liquid cooled too I hope! This is a real improvement!

      the R1100 is 1993 was already 4 valve per cyl, next to Oilhead also called RV4.

    What Bmw didn’t mention is that the cam gears will wear out prematurely and, for most of us, just out of warranty. When my 1250gsa was in for 20000 km service I was told that the cam gears were worn out - a very expensive repair. The service workshop suggested to Bmw that, given the low mileage of the bike and given that it had been fully serviced at Bmw workshops, they ought to bear the cost for this repair, especially since this isn’t something that should break down at all. Bmw Motorrad replied that they would take 0% of the cost. It was the same thing two years earlier, when the throttle handle and the engine harness broke a month out of warranty. No good will at all from Bmw despite a faulty construction being obvious.
    In the end the service workshop settled to change the cam tensioner on the left side, but most likely the problem will come back in a year or two. The service shop said that most 1250:s with shiftcam has cam rattle. Bmw denies it. I checked some Bmw forums and quite soon realised that the workshop statement was correct - a lot of 1250 owners have experienced the problem. Apparently also a few 1300 owners. I traded the bike for another brand but I will never again buy a Bmw. You pay premium for a Bmw and should be able to expect a qulity on par with the price. But insted you get poor quality wih no responsibility taken by Bmw. Similar story on the car side of things. Bmw make bold claims that cam timing chains are so much better than belts, but a fact is that the chain fails way more often than the belts used by other manufacturers.

    What makes each of the two pins raise and lower to shift the cam across? Hydraulic/electric/mechanical? When it comes to reliability I guess the cam shaft is good for many hundreds of thousands of miles, and whatever the shift device is is just under the cam cover to easily accessed if it becomes faulty?

    This is one bogus video, the intake valve timing is way off. Have a look at 1:40-1:43 and watch as the intake valves are closing as the piston is coming to top dead center (TDC). There would be almost no compression on the fuel air mix. As it stands, this engine would make no power - Please tell me that the real engine will have better cam timing than this.
    Also, that pin being used to shift the cam will shear off.
    Plus what holds the cam shaft in either position after it has been moved? Luck???

    • @geforce5591

    • @richbinaz
      @richbinaz 6 років тому +1

      Tobi Ogunsanwo Hi Tobi - I used to make CAD models from when the Boeing 777 was brand new (early 1990's - Catia V3, V4), and they had to be accurate, or the plane would not fly. So 25 years later on I'm sure they can get it right.
      The exhaust cam is about right but the inlet cam is around 180 degrees off, which I assume is deliberate for some reason??
      Looks like BMW posted this and perhaps they would like to challenge my other assumptions also??? Shearing pin?? Lucky positioning??

And, some find the somewhat abrupt transition a tad abrasive. But, I love it - wouldn’t trade it for anything.
