German fines are also pretty serious sometimes. From what I've heard, even if you're rich they'll make sure they hurt. It's not a fixed amount like in the U.S. or presumably other countries, it's based on what you can afford to pay.
babybirdhome not really. the fines for minor crime (administrative offence) are fixed. only when it comes to "real" crimes, a judge has to issue a fine. then a term called tagessatz comes into account. meaning the amount of money you make one day.
I love it how everyone moves over for you. I try to do that as well here in North America. (Canada). But really only like 1 in 100 drivers move over for you if you drive faster than them.

Ah Europe (Germany), where the majority of the people behind the wheel are actually educated in the skill of driving. Where they understand the concept of an overtaking lane and are paying attention to what other cars are doing. If that were anywhere in the US, especially California, you'd have a bunch of 55mph Prius's riding along side large trucks refusing to overtake or move to the right until their exit comes up. Just once I'd like to get over to the right when one of these pinheads is trying to get to their exit and block them.

Well, in germany there a way to many construction sites which slow down traffic (usually road work). One for example has been there all my life and always causes traffic. Yes the autobahn is incredibly smooth and safe but you should see the state of the streets in smaller cities, it's horrible. Or the sidewalks are just useless. I have been in the us a lot of times and the overall state off the streets is better then the german counterpart. Of course we have idiots as well who make driving unsafe.

An interesting test would be: What is the highest sustained (steady) speed you can achieve for a prolonged period of time before the battery heats up and limits the power? The answer would of course be a function of outside temperature. It would also be interesting to know what is the limiting factor in cooling the battery. It might be one or more parts of the heat removal system (pump, radiators, fans, compressor) or it might be the battery design itself -- perhaps the geometry of the cells and the capacity to move fluid through it is limited enough that increasing the HVAC size beyond a certain point would not help. (If the fluid is pumped through the battery too fast, it might produce damaging forces on battery components.)

Sustained would be eg: driving 200km at 140km/h - what is the limit on speed for longer distances? In Europe you rarely travel that far while in USA and Australia it is not unusual to do a trip that is 600km each way. I want to know if a 1600km trip is realistically achievable in 24 hours. This will be cruising at 100km/h for about 15 hours with the car only stopping for super chargers (8 x 30min stop) and the occasional photo opportunity, and probably with cooling on during the day and heating on at night.
smiling bandit these cars have thermal cooling and heating systems for the batteries. Actually each individual little battery cell is in contact with the thermal management tubes.

I guess that's just the German (or European in general) driving education system. You are required to have driving lessons with a professional driving teacher, of which some have to be on the Autobahn. Of course the teachers makes sure you know how to behave on the Autobahn.
Not true. A professional driving teacher is not mandatory in all countries (but hell it should be). And as mentioned by others: you have to drive in the right most lane at all times when possible. One other difference with the US is that you are NOT allowed to overtake on the right side.
Was kinda surprised how fast it went into power restrictions due to heat issues. I guess it shows there that is was build mainly for a much slower moving market than germany. But then, pretty much all countries have a much slower speed restriction. Yes, most german manufacturers limit their cars initially to 250 km/h as well, however with a safety training there is usually an option to get 270 km/h or unrestricted speed on those cars. I am looking forward to my Model 3, but i do like to drive fast whenever possible, not looking forward to heat issues restricting that.
The reason the power was restricted so quickly is because he decelerated by regen and accelerated all of the time. This puts a LOT of stress on the battery. The car can sustain 200-230 KM/H easily.
I know a guy who's a BMW engineer and he gets a) a lot of money and b) discount on all BMWs xD so his car is some crazy shit BMW I don't even know which one, but this is slow compared to what he does with that car :) I agree though 250 km/h is pretty fast, I never went more than 180.
I highly doubt this is slow, even compared to something like the M3. P90D can go 0-100km in 2.8 seconds in ludicrous mode. This is comparable to supercars.

It's called Darwin's Law! Loved driving across Germany, the discipline and the mutual respect and courtesy (when it happens) makes it a pleasure. The rest of the world's drivers could learn a lot about this.
I don't think the top speed is software limited much. At around 155Mph the motor is spinning at close to 30,000 RPM which is nearing the maximum it can do. There's a good thread on a forum that goes though it with all the calculations and gear ratios. Even the wheel diameter is considered.

I've read all the comments about shaking hands and scary speeding around 180 - 200 km/h. And I have to tell you, with all respect, always choose safe speed to you even if it is 120, and don't go 200 if your hands and legs are shaking. Because here in Germany normal cruising speed for most "Autobahn" is around 160 - 180 km/h. And I see no problem driving 210km/h with my old diesel X5. If you can't, or you're afraid, just don't.

Any old Ford Focus can do 180 kph (actually more like 170, the speedo always displays a few more). Any sedan nowadays can sustain 200 all day. It's exhausting for the driver though, wind noise and high concentration make you require lots of breaks so you're not really getting anywhere faster. And you get a lot less "highway mpg" than it says on the window sticker. :-)

If the main fans are using power from the battery to cool the battery, won't that heat up the battery? Because the current they will be pulling from the battery will be high right?
The cooling fans draw a few watts, nothing the battery pack will ever notice. But it's liquid cooled, so if I'm remembering correctly, it can also refrigerate the coolant if necessary using the A/C pump, which can draw something like 2-3 kW, which is also nothing the battery pack will ever notice heat-wise.

Big audi's and merc's can do 250 for hours on end, this car starts backing down after just a few minutes of fast driving. Long way to go before we can replace our fast diesel/petrol cars by electric cars in Europe. Also true fast cars go way beyond 250 on the AB so it's not really that exiting. Nice to see the progress that has been made though.
Totally agree with this car being the future, there is no doubt this is a revolutionary vehicle. But as I live in The Netherlands, ze Germans are never far away and I do like a little bit of speeding once in a while. So the car might not be for me, or people like me. As this short film was focused on driving fast on the autobahn I thought I mention this. That being said this car will fit most people just fine. And funds allowing it would be a great second car next to a fast and fun petrol car.

Not underplaying it but I was seriously expecting it to be FASTER than that, specially considering its price. To clarify again: I know its wicked fast 0 to 60 but I was expecting a higher top speed of at least 300kph.

Seeing this makes me realize before I can replace my Car with a fully electric one will take a while. As I drive long distances on the Autobahn regularly in high speeds. Hamburg Munich. 1 times fueling in my Mercedes and I drive max whenever its possible upto 250 kmh for hours. I would have to add several hours for multiple times recharing the car to my travel time if I would take a Tesla.
in Australia the right lane is for overtaking on highways and u use the middle lane for just driving and left for slow drivers but that's only if there are three lanes if there are two on a highway or freeway then left is for driving and right for overtaking and if u stay in the right lane u can get a ticket

can... but honestly you can almost never keep that speed up for longer than a few minutes because someone is on the left lane, so you have to slow down again, speed up again etc. best and cheapest travel speed is 130-150
1h30min from Leipzig to Downtown Berlin. Impossible with a Tesla because of the limitation. (and the battery as well) You can go over 200 to 250 kph for more than 10 or 20km if you choose the right time.
JeaneRace The guy in the video purposefully stressed the battery and rotors. If you don't constantly decelerate and accelerate to 250kmh like this guy did heat is a non issue. This car is able to sustain 200-250 easily.

Thanks for pointing out that the ludicrous mode goes beyond 0-60 mph (0-100 kmh) as all online articles that I've read only highlight the above numbers, but does not properly explore the full potential of the option. Would you be interested in creating an episode that compare a Tesla running with Lud mode activated vs one that doesn't, in terms of, range depreciation/appreciation, noticeable affects on the batteries, possible battery life degradation when use in either mode, etc?
I even see them lugging behind trucks with 90 like those small cars with 30 hp toy engines. I will buy me self an electric car when they come close to 800 km per charge. I doing round 150 km per day and only diesels work for me and i can drive much faster than 120 and still burn like 6l/100 km.
what kind of diesel engines do you drive? What car company, engine size? I Drove a ford cmax 2013 2l TDCi on 6,4l/100km (90% autobahn, 10% city) without driving it very economic
2016 Fiat 1.6 mjet II 120/320Nm and 2013 Renault 1.5 dci 110/260Nm..1.6 is at 5.5l /100 at the moment still on winter tires and dci 110 is now mostly driving in the city and it is round 6.5l.. Smaller engines are more economical if not to weak, none of mines are ..

I did 263 last year on the autobahn in my dads C450 AMG, which was quite the experience, but gotta hand it to tesla for making a electric car that can approach 400 and up hp petrol top speeds...
Just a small hint: In germany you don't indicate if you enter a roundabout, just when you about to leave it. You can even get fined if you indicate when entering (although I never heard of someone who actually got fined for it, especially if you're not from here, but you still could get fined).
About german motorways : It's not unrestricted, it's uncontrolled. If you crash on that kind of motorway at ludicrous speed (and survive), your standard insurance policy is void.

Yikes! That is alot of energy use! Average 42.5 kWh /100km. At that rate you will have a range of 220 Km and use the equivalent of 9.2l/100 km of diesel. This is why electrics are not seen on the Autobahn. I comfortably cruise at 170 kmh in a Golf TDI and get in the 6'sl/100km. I would love an electric, but without a transmission, it just doesn't work for long distance at speeds above 120 kmh. I should specify that I am referring to costs here, not actual energy density. While electric is much more efficient, the cost of electricity vs. diesel means that diesel still makes more economic sense for now, especially for long-distance highway & autobahn.
That is incorrect. One litre of diesel contains 10 kWh of energy. 42.5 kWh/100 km will equal to 4.25 l/100 km. Even the most efficient production car won't be able to average that low consumption doing the hard accelerations I did. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density
You are right, but I am referring to cost not actual energy density. In Germany a kWh costs .25 Euro cents while a liter of Diesel is about 1.15 Euro at the moment. While I agree that an electric motor is much more efficient than an ICE, real world prices do not reflect that. Now that supercharging is no longer complementary, the economics have to make sense, and they do not right now if you travel long distances on the autobahn. :)
The cost of electricity in Norway is 0.07 €/kWh and the cost of diesel is 1.33 €/l. So that means a whopping 2.2 l/100 km. Even harder for fossil cars to beat that. As for the news about superchargers, I think you missed one very important point. All existing Teslas will still charge for free. Only new cars delivered after April 1st, 2017 will have to pay. And we don't know the price yet. Tesla said it will be low and that they are not going to profit on the charging network.
Wow that is so cheap! I actually got an email from my provider today, informing me that starting in October 2017, my electricity price will go up to .35 Euro cents per kWh! Clearly the economics of an electric car depend on your market, but like I said, in Germany and especially on the Autobahn, it doesn't make sense. I also think that this will impact the success of the model 3 in Germany. The model s and x, which receive the free charging, are niche vehicles and not reflective of the experience most electric car consumers will have.
Well, I have nothing against driving fast, in fact as a typical German I do so myself but this video just shows (especially @ 4:55 ) why people who are not used to driving in Germany should read the rules first. Even if there is no general speed limit you have the obligation to adapt to the current traffic. If the police had seen you do this at 5:00 , your trip would've been over right there and then. You know, you really scare other drivers with this behaviour? Because of actions like that we are about to get general speed limits, too ... thanks! What the heck. What else are you supposed to do when driving fast, especially when not used to? That is completly normal behaviour and i have seen far worse. The only way to prevent something like that is with a speed limit. How can you even be sure that he was scared? He just cleared the road because he was probably to heavily loaded to accelerate. I am driving often in Germany, and when somebody approaches me under full throttle while I am just about to overtake, I usually apply the brakes slightly, turn back into the right lane, let him pass and overtake afterwards. That's not because of me being scared, but simply an act of courtesy. The driver (at 5:00) was just considerate of him; at least that's my impression. The police would have zero interest in pulling him over. He is just not that of an experienced driver. Still, he is doing ok and has fun :)
if regeneration creates heat and consequently limits the available power for a while, can you not just turn off regeneration and see how much longer you can push the car at high speeds before heat becomes a factor?

well a proper 80s car can also easily beat this thing, the Tesla just isn't that fast. acceleration, top speed and on track, there are much older cars much faster.
Does the car require a cool down period before letting you charge the batteries. If it doesn't, I would strongly suggest waiting at least ten minutes before charge the batteries. If you want your batteries to have longer shelf life. Also quick charging will reduce the overall battery life. I wonder if tesla mentions that in the owners manual. They must know this, unless they want you to buy a new battery pack, sooner than later.
tesla has a dedicated cooling system for charging and discharging the batteries. because of this tesla claims supercharging will have little effect on battery life
hey7328 I'm surprised their making that claim, They are using 18650 battery cells in their battery packs. All lithium batteries require at least a ten minute cool down period, before engaging a charge. This is do to the chemical reactions taking place inside the battery🔋cell. Maybe their using a new chemical inside the battery cell that prevents damages to the cells. Even if you're cooling the battery down, it's being done from the outside in. That means the center portion of the battery gets cooled last. Maybe Tesla is thinking about convenience over battery life. I would still wait ten minutes before charging the vehicle. If you don't believe me, go research chemical reactions when charging lithium batteries.

In canada max speed is 120km/h lol... and thats for high-way. You cant go faster than that or else you get a ticket.

An interesting test would be: What is the highest sustained (steady) speed you can achieve for a prolonged period of time before the battery heats up and limits the power? The answer would of course be a function of outside temperature.
It would also be interesting to know what is the limiting factor in cooling the battery. It might be one or more parts of the heat removal system (pump, radiators, fans, compressor) or it might be the battery design itself -- perhaps the geometry of the cells and the capacity to move fluid through it is limited enough that increasing the HVAC size beyond a certain point would not help. (If the fluid is pumped through the battery too fast, it might produce damaging forces on battery components.)

In Europe you rarely travel that far while in USA and Australia it is not unusual to do a trip that is 600km each way.
I want to know if a 1600km trip is realistically achievable in 24 hours. This will be cruising at 100km/h for about 15 hours with the car only stopping for super chargers (8 x 30min stop) and the occasional photo opportunity, and probably with cooling on during the day and heating on at night.

I guess that's just the German (or European in general) driving education system. You are required to have driving lessons with a professional driving teacher, of which some have to be on the Autobahn. Of course the teachers makes sure you know how to behave on the Autobahn.
Not true. A professional driving teacher is not mandatory in all countries (but hell it should be).
And as mentioned by others: you have to drive in the right most lane at all times when possible. One other difference with the US is that you are NOT allowed to overtake on the right side.

Was kinda surprised how fast it went into power restrictions due to heat issues. I guess it shows there that is was build mainly for a much slower moving market than germany. But then, pretty much all countries have a much slower speed restriction. Yes, most german manufacturers limit their cars initially to 250 km/h as well, however with a safety training there is usually an option to get 270 km/h or unrestricted speed on those cars. I am looking forward to my Model 3, but i do like to drive fast whenever possible, not looking forward to heat issues restricting that.
The reason the power was restricted so quickly is because he decelerated by regen and accelerated all of the time. This puts a LOT of stress on the battery. The car can sustain 200-230 KM/H easily.

I highly doubt this is slow, even compared to something like the M3. P90D can go 0-100km in 2.8 seconds in ludicrous mode. This is comparable to supercars.

I don't think the top speed is software limited much. At around 155Mph the motor is spinning at close to 30,000 RPM which is nearing the maximum it can do. There's a good thread on a forum that goes though it with all the calculations and gear ratios. Even the wheel diameter is considered.
That is incorrect. At top speed, the rear motor is spinning at 16,500 rpm. The front motor is geared higher and is spinning at even "lower" rpm.

I've read all the comments about shaking hands and scary speeding around 180 - 200 km/h. And I have to tell you, with all respect, always choose safe speed to you even if it is 120, and don't go 200 if your hands and legs are shaking. Because here in Germany normal cruising speed for most "Autobahn" is around 160 - 180 km/h. And I see no problem driving 210km/h with my old diesel X5. If you can't, or you're afraid, just don't.
Don't worry. I did many 200+ km/h runs later. It was just a bit scary taking a 2600 kg fully electric SUV to this speeds for the first time.

Any old Ford Focus can do 180 kph (actually more like 170, the speedo always displays a few more). Any sedan nowadays can sustain 200 all day. It's exhausting for the driver though, wind noise and high concentration make you require lots of breaks so you're not really getting anywhere faster. And you get a lot less "highway mpg" than it says on the window sticker. :-)

If the main fans are using power from the battery to cool the battery, won't that heat up the battery? Because the current they will be pulling from the battery will be high right?

The cooling fans draw a few watts, nothing the battery pack will ever notice. But it's liquid cooled, so if I'm remembering correctly, it can also refrigerate the coolant if necessary using the A/C pump, which can draw something like 2-3 kW, which is also nothing the battery pack will ever notice heat-wise.

Watch the power dial on the left of the dash. Part way through you see dashed lines showing the power is being limited because the battery is becoming too warm.

Big audi's and merc's can do 250 for hours on end, this car starts backing down after just a few minutes of fast driving. Long way to go before we can replace our fast diesel/petrol cars by electric cars in Europe. Also true fast cars go way beyond 250 on the AB so it's not really that exiting. Nice to see the progress that has been made though.
Totally agree with this car being the future, there is no doubt this is a revolutionary vehicle. But as I live in The Netherlands, ze Germans are never far away and I do like a little bit of speeding once in a while. So the car might not be for me, or people like me. As this short film was focused on driving fast on the autobahn I thought I mention this. That being said this car will fit most people just fine. And funds allowing it would be a great second car next to a fast and fun petrol car.

Seeing this makes me realize before I can replace my Car with a fully electric one will take a while. As I drive long distances on the Autobahn regularly in high speeds. Hamburg Munich. 1 times fueling in my Mercedes and I drive max whenever its possible upto 250 kmh for hours. I would have to add several hours for multiple times recharing the car to my travel time if I would take a Tesla.

I Drove a ford cmax 2013 2l TDCi on 6,4l/100km (90% autobahn, 10% city) without driving it very economic
2016 Fiat 1.6 mjet II 120/320Nm and 2013 Renault 1.5 dci 110/260Nm..1.6 is at 5.5l /100 at the moment still on winter tires and dci 110 is now mostly driving in the city and it is round 6.5l.. Smaller engines are more economical if not to weak, none of mines are ..

I did 263 last year on the autobahn in my dads C450 AMG, which was quite the experience, but gotta hand it to tesla for making a electric car that can approach 400 and up hp petrol top speeds...
Just a small hint: In germany you don't indicate if you enter a roundabout, just when you about to leave it. You can even get fined if you indicate when entering (although I never heard of someone who actually got fined for it, especially if you're not from here, but you still could get fined).
About german motorways : It's not unrestricted, it's uncontrolled. If you crash on that kind of motorway at ludicrous speed (and survive), your standard insurance policy is void.

Yikes! That is alot of energy use! Average 42.5 kWh /100km. At that rate you will have a range of 220 Km and use the equivalent of 9.2l/100 km of diesel. This is why electrics are not seen on the Autobahn. I comfortably cruise at 170 kmh in a Golf TDI and get in the 6'sl/100km. I would love an electric, but without a transmission, it just doesn't work for long distance at speeds above 120 kmh. I should specify that I am referring to costs here, not actual energy density. While electric is much more efficient, the cost of electricity vs. diesel means that diesel still makes more economic sense for now, especially for long-distance highway & autobahn.
That is incorrect. One litre of diesel contains 10 kWh of energy. 42.5 kWh/100 km will equal to 4.25 l/100 km. Even the most efficient production car won't be able to average that low consumption doing the hard accelerations I did.

You are right, but I am referring to cost not actual energy density. In Germany a kWh costs .25 Euro cents while a liter of Diesel is about 1.15 Euro at the moment. While I agree that an electric motor is much more efficient than an ICE, real world prices do not reflect that. Now that supercharging is no longer complementary, the economics have to make sense, and they do not right now if you travel long distances on the autobahn. :)
The cost of electricity in Norway is 0.07 €/kWh and the cost of diesel is 1.33 €/l. So that means a whopping 2.2 l/100 km. Even harder for fossil cars to beat that.
As for the news about superchargers, I think you missed one very important point. All existing Teslas will still charge for free. Only new cars delivered after April 1st, 2017 will have to pay. And we don't know the price yet. Tesla said it will be low and that they are not going to profit on the charging network.
Wow that is so cheap! I actually got an email from my provider today, informing me that starting in October 2017, my electricity price will go up to .35 Euro cents per kWh! Clearly the economics of an electric car depend on your market, but like I said, in Germany and especially on the Autobahn, it doesn't make sense. I also think that this will impact the success of the model 3 in Germany. The model s and x, which receive the free charging, are niche vehicles and not reflective of the experience most electric car consumers will have.

Well, I have nothing against driving fast, in fact as a typical German I do so myself but this video just shows (especially @ 4:55 ) why people who are not used to driving in Germany should read the rules first. Even if there is no general speed limit you have the obligation to adapt to the current traffic. If the police had seen you do this at 5:00 , your trip would've been over right there and then. You know, you really scare other drivers with this behaviour? Because of actions like that we are about to get general speed limits, too ... thanks! Please, just do it at night when nobody is bothered.

What the heck. What else are you supposed to do when driving fast, especially when not used to? That is completly normal behaviour and i have seen far worse. The only way to prevent something like that is with a speed limit. How can you even be sure that he was scared? He just cleared the road because he was probably to heavily loaded to accelerate. I am driving often in Germany, and when somebody approaches me under full throttle while I am just about to overtake, I usually apply the brakes slightly, turn back into the right lane, let him pass and overtake afterwards. That's not because of me being scared, but simply an act of courtesy. The driver (at 5:00) was just considerate of him; at least that's my impression. The police would have zero interest in pulling him over. He is just not that of an experienced driver. Still, he is doing ok and has fun :)
if regeneration creates heat and consequently limits the available power for a while, can you not just turn off regeneration and see how much longer you can push the car at high speeds before heat becomes a factor?
Why do all not Germans think that this was scary? You simply drive at normal speed 😉 we are at the way home from Norway. Love the country, but ill nearly get mad when i have to drive long distances here. It would take forever 😆

I am not from germany.. But i have an e36 m3 3.2 and it can go 270 km/h easier than this Electric car and never losing power (and the car is from 1997)
And also never felt any heat from the car
well a proper 80s car can also easily beat this thing, the Tesla just isn't that fast. acceleration, top speed and on track, there are much older cars much faster.

Does the car require a cool down period before letting you charge the batteries. If it doesn't, I would strongly suggest waiting at least ten minutes before charge the batteries. If you want your batteries to have longer shelf life. Also quick charging will reduce the overall battery life. I wonder if tesla mentions that in the owners manual. They must know this, unless they want you to buy a new battery pack, sooner than later.
tesla has a dedicated cooling system for charging and discharging the batteries. because of this tesla claims supercharging will have little effect on battery life
hey7328 I'm surprised their making that claim, They are using 18650 battery cells in their battery packs. All lithium batteries require at least a ten minute cool down period, before engaging a charge. This is do to the chemical reactions taking place inside the battery🔋cell. Maybe their using a new chemical inside the battery cell that prevents damages to the cells. Even if you're cooling the battery down, it's being done from the outside in. That means the center portion of the battery gets cooled last. Maybe Tesla is thinking about convenience over battery life. I would still wait ten minutes before charging the vehicle. If you don't believe me, go research chemical reactions when charging lithium batteries.
afaik the cooling system routes through the pack itself, so it can also cool in the centre of the pack
