The Ball python (Python regius) is the most popular pet snake in the world. Many people keep this species at home, either a natural color or some morph. It is native to West and Central Africa. Ball pythons are exported in high numbers especially from Togo, Benin and Ghana. Some are wild caught, but most of them are "ranched". What does that mean? Learn more about the pet trade! In this video we will show you the Ball python in its natural habitat (a natural color and a white/albino snake), some killed snakes in the voodoo (fetish) market in Togo and also a scene of us finding a wild individual!
There is no need to collect these from the wild concidering how easy they are to breed in captivity. Thats the only good things about people wanting the designer breeds. It limits the demand for wild caught snakes. Although some of the breeding has created neurological conditions.
The desire to have a wild caught snake still exists unfortunately. Thank you for watching.
Noi abbiamo invaso il loro Habitat 😪
Thank you for watching!
As a person who owns a ball python I will try to make my snakes enclosure similar to where they are found
That’s a good idea, thanks for watching!
so nice to see them in their natural habitat :-) whenever i search for snake related videos online, it's always from a pet owner. really glad there's a channel with people that leave them undisturbed in the wild!!
Thank you! Great that you love our approach! 🙂
Truth. Because I love them n I want a few as pets but I dislike to see the babies get took from their mother. I hate it
@@freesunnyshattagkbfsu767 This really doesn't happen with snakes, especially ball pythons, at all. While it happens within these countries, that's not really what you're buying when you buy one, if you buy from a breeder selling captive bred snakes.
That, and the mothers don't feel any attachment for the young, they immediately leave each other behind likely without ever interacting. Not like mammals or birds that do otherwise.
This is a wonderful, informative video. Thank you for being factual, scientific and honest about the fact that when there are forested areas, ball pythons do indeed climb and in fact, in the rainy season, which can be half the year, they take to the trees. Unfortunately, the most unethical of people have perpetuated this mythology that ball pythons spend 100% of their lives in small dark spaces they never leave, in an attempt to justify cruel, inhumane housing for mass breeding that now even well meaning people unfortunately believe and practice. These fantastic animals deserve to be treated with respect and kindness and if kept in captivity, at least at the bare minimum be provided habitats where they can display their natural behaviors. Also, thank you for acknowledging the pet trade and especially certain people's stupid drive to "discover" a new morph, are in fact impacting wild populations. It's a shame there are no scientists documenting where new "morphs" come from, because they very well may actually be localities.
Thank you very much! Great that you like our factual and honest approach. We feel that it is very important to inform about the pet trade and the huge numbers of Ball pythons exported from Africa every year.
May i ask if you think all captive breeding should cease? If not, how do breeders house their breeders and babies for sale?
@@acaciaballpythons No, I don't think all captive breeding should cease, but it should be less prevalent since these animals can live half a century and breeders are actively creating a population problem where many animals are going to suffer down the road. I also do think breeders should stop hoarding and instead produce quality animals, not just with the genetics, but with the care they put into the parents by providing adequate housing and environments where they are able to act out their natural behaviors.
@@honeybeeart9382 Ok so lets get into specifics. Say less people breed and say those that breed have lower numbers. Whats an acceptable number of clutches per year?(average clutch is 6-8 eggs).
@@acaciaballpythons That's a very specific question that would require lots of information and statistics that I don't have off the top of my head. That said, there are a huge number of people breeding that probably shouldn't, right now everyone who gets a ball python is often encouraged to breed them. Considering how many cats and dogs are euthanized each year due to lack of homes, how will this fare long term for animals that can live 1/2 a century? And how could anyone with a heart take an animal that lives around the equator climbing trees with UV receptors in it's eyes and lock it in a bare, plastic tub for decades? It's absolutely callous and cruel. We're at a point where the reptile community could prove they ARE better and not create this population problem. Time will tell.
Stunning animal, and a wonderful pet. Captive-bred pythons are cheap and abundant. Hopefully demand for wild-caught will decrease.
Thanks for watching! Yes, there are so many captive bred Ball pythons!
@@LivingZoology If you're shopping for a ball python, look past the overbred morphs. The wild-type normal patterns are cheap and abundant, so much that males are sold as feeders for other snakes. You can have a baby for $20, or an adult for $100. There's something magical about the patterns and temperament of the wild type. Mine is named Soumauro after a famous snake-keeper. Love the videos!
@@Ramiiam Exactly! We also have the wild color at home, a male and a female 🙂 Thanks for watching our videos!
@@LivingZoology i have a yellow belly female, a pastel male, and a wild color female.
I love seeing ball pythons in the wild! Thank you for making this video, we need more!
We were very happy that we could see it in the wild! Great that you love our video!
Stunning photography as always. A real pleasure when your videos come out.
Thank you very much! Great that you love our new video! :)
My favorite snake. These babies are so beautiful spirited. Atleast let some eggs remain with the mother. It would be good to do.
Thanks for watching! Local snake catchers told us that this female already incubated her eggs.
Beautiful documentary as usual. I love seeing ball pythons in their natural habitat. It almost feels weird seeing them digging around in dirt and not in a domestic setting. I hope the governments find a way to regulate the pet trade. Egg collection seems very promising for sustainability reasons, but it sounds like they need to start managing the populations the way the US manages the deer population: legal but limited. It's a tough line to walk when too many poor people are using ball python eggs to feed their families.
Thank you very much! Yes, it looks like better evidence of the origin of exported animals is needed and it is neccessary to get data about the numbers in various wild populations. In general, the trade should probably be more regulated.
When it comes vodun the ceremony involves very small amount of snakes but the main issue is export and demand else where in the world. Some snake like puff adder are nuisance and cause mayhem I will prefer them to be eliminated and shipped out I just hate that snake.
From what we saw on the market in Lome it looked like snakes are one of the most numerous animals there. It was disgusting to see so many snakes killed.
@@LivingZoologyunfortunately west africa is very poor due to war and colonialism so people have to get their hands dirty to make any money around there
My urge to pick the mites out from under their scales was off the charts watching this.
We often see ectoparasites on snakes in the wild. Thanks for watching!
even in the wild, they are so cute. i love ball pythons.

Great video, plus could really hear your love for Royals which was wonderful. Sadly like everywhere humans pose such a problem for them in the wild and the ‘murder markets’ are true lay sad to see. Interesting to see an Ivory (I assume) in the wild too! ❤
Thank you very much! We really love this species, yes :) We are not experts on color morphs though, someone suggested it is maybe a black-eyed Lucy. What do you think?
@@LivingZoology it could be but from what I can see on film from the colouring I would say it’s an Ivory (super yellowbelly) of course I could be totally wrong and until seen in the flesh and bred from you can never be 100% still a totally amazing find 😍 I love Royal Pythons and would love to see them in the wild, must of been amazing ❤️
Top notch photography and sound work!🤩
Thank you very much! :)
Love you great people
Thank you very much!
Neat snakes but do become quite large in captivity requiring large meals. None of the ones I knew back in the day ever bit me - they would hiss loudly and mock strike with their mouths closed. Probably why they're a pet trade favorite. Being loved to death.
This species is awesome, we agree. It would be great if people stopped buying so many wild ones.
A very nice movie.

Um
They are alive today.
Doesn't that make them modern???
Henophidia is an infraorder of snakes that includes boas, pythons, and other fairly similar families and superfamilies of snakes, it is the most basal of the four major snake groups, the other three major snake groups are the infraorders Scolecophidia (Threadsnakes and Blindsnakes), Ordinophidia (Colubrids and Relatives), and Toxicophidia (Vipers, Cobras, Sea Snakes, Burrowing Asps, and Relatives), a majority of snakes that are known to use constriction to kill prey instead of venomous bites belong to the Henophidia infraorder.
Thank you for watching.
Brilliant content, just a thought, maybe it would be a good idea to invest in some microphones, there are good ones on Amazon for not much money, and would add clearer audio. Please keep up the good work!
Great seeing them in wild but each video I see they are destroying its home or burrow
We were not happy about that, but the locals refused to look after dark when they are active. After finding one we did not look for more and we were happy that we did not disturb a female on eggs.
Love ball pythons
They are awesome! Thanks for watching!
Its actually called a Royal Python (Python Regius) but people started calling it a Ball Python commonly because it curls up into a ball due to it being a shy natured snake. You said it was a Ball Python also called a Royal Python which is the wrong way round. 🐍💕🐍
We did not try to say which name was first. Ball python is nowadays a commonly used name for this species, so we started with that one ;)
Common names dont matter and neither one is correct
Ok your from the UK we get it stfu
Fantastic as per usual
Thank you very much!
You make great videos. Are you going to AnimalCon in Orlando in September?
Thank you very much! We live in the Czech Republic, so that event is a bit far away from us.
Woah. Home to my little buddy’s cousins. Amazing to see how they live in the wild
Thank you very much for watching, great that you love our video!
Awesome quality~👍
Thank you for sharing this video~🤗
Thank you very much! Great that you love it!
Why don't they go to Florids grab em some of those snakes they have to many, don't they
As far as we know Ball pythons are not the most common invasive snakes in Florida.
هل من الممكن ان يكون طول الفيديو اكثر من هذا الوقت وشكراً لكم🎉

Vodun and Voudou are 2 completely seperate and different religions, neither of which are called "Voodoo"
Please explain what you think is wrong.
@@LivingZoologyi just did. Vodun is not "also called voodoo". Voodoo isn't a translafion, its a made up word to refer to mysterious foreign african black magic
Wonderful documentary!!!

one timid big snake...
no wonder people love them
look at the wild cousin still had a sweet docile face on it, a cute goofy looking little mellow fellow.
who doesn't love this curled into ball peaceful animal, is exotic.
Anyway, no a good idea pet , it grownup to be super huge size, is giant, if took as a pet need proper care.
Why not adopt cats and dogs there's many in the shelter waiting for home, let the exotic pet go back where they belong
Are you talking about the Ball python and calling it huge?? 🤔
Royal pythons only max out at 6 feet which is small compared to burms which can get above 15 feet
Do you have references available?
We would be able to find the sources of our information.
@@LivingZoology please do i would love to see them
Love your docs
Thank you!
Why won’t mine get that big :( spent all that money on an 80 gallons enclosure for what
Thanks for watching. Every snake grows according to the amount of food and conditions it has.
Too bad all those pet snakes were not still in the wild where they belong. Too many greedy people making money breeding and selling them.
Thank you for watching! There is definitely a need for data about how the wild populations are doing.
Was the snake you caught a female since you said "she" and "her"?
Yes, we think that she was a female.
Man keeps taken from mother nature soon mother nature will take back
Thank you very much for watching.
Thanks!
Thank you for your support! ❤️
What's the fun in catching a wild animal and keepnig it in a box?
Don't ask us, we travel around the world to find and film snakes and then we release them back to their natural habitat.
I do wish that you had called it by its given name either Royal Python or Python regius in this video. Only idiots refer to them as ball pythons. Waited for this for months since i asked you about a video of them in the wild! Thank you anyway as your videography is exceptional & we never get to see Royals in their natural habitat 🐍💕🐍
We included the name Royal python and the Latin name at the beginning, hopefully that's ok :) Ball python is a widely used name today and we don't see any problem with it. No need to call everyone idiots. Great that you love the footage, it was a bit of work! We traveled to Togo on our own expense, worked hard to find a Ball python in the wild, we filmed it, then we created this video (about 2 days of work).
@@LivingZoologygreat job dude
@@iamrobertpeston6368 Thanks a lot!
Is that a black eyed Lucy in the wild? 🧐
We are not experts in Ball python morphs, but it could be! To us it seemed amazing that this snake comes from the wild!
I also love seeing the natural body condition of wild ball pythons. They are lean and muscular and a good representation of what they should look like, as opposed to the morbidly obese, sickly animals many people show, unaware of how unhealthy their animals are from overfeeding and lack of exercise or even basic movement. I've heard one breeder complain that sometimes a female might be 8 years old before it wants to breed, so I have to wonder, the growth is obviously much slower in the wild, has anyone tracked these animals long term in the wild by tagging them and logging their behavior for years?
Yes, they are muscular, strong and quite fast in the wild! We don’t know about any study using radiotracking of these snakes, it will be surely very interesting to see data about their spatial ecology!
They don’t live much in the wild about 15 years if lucky ,compared to up to 30 years in captivity
@@FJBrandon Considering how much research there is done on these animals, I don't believe you can prove that definitively. A scientist would have had to put something on an animal to identify/track it and studied the same animal for his or her entire life, and we know that hasn't happened yet. The "fact" that they only live to 15 if lucky is just more speculation, usually leaning to justify poor treatment and keeping ("Look, I've had this ball python for 20 years in a tub! It must be fine if they only live to be 10 or 15 in the wild!") Maybe this incomplete idea is based on the animals they have managed to capture, but we know, no one is going into the deep dark forest to study these animals and for all you know, the older ones are a lot smarter and more experienced thru survival, that's why they aren't getting caught all the time. The truth is, we really don't know and it's unlikely that if they can survive so long in captivity, there are no long lived wild pythons. That would make no sense that an animal genetically programmed to survive decades never lives that long in it's natural habitat. Evolution would have changed that.
😂 they are far more healthy and reproduxe at a much higher rate in captivity, its nit even close. In fact they shoukd be bred more for release in west africa to repopulate, only natural lineages of course.
Nature fetishists are funny.
You could have left the snake back in the earth hole where she was!
We released it about 20 meters from the hole which was unfortunately destroyed.
@@LivingZoology Great! Thank you👍🏼

Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
I’ve always loved ❤ Ball Pythons but into my own words they should really be wild snakes 🐍 not pets. Thanks 🙏 for showing brilliant 🐍
Thanks for watching! Great that you love our new video!
I was very worried about the way the hunter hacked at the ground. They’re going to hurt the snakes for sure with that sharp axe being thrown so heavily into the soil! 😢😢 Why don’t they take more care! Poor things it makes so sad. I have 27 snakes (All rescues I’m a self funded rescue) - just over half are royal pythons. They’re literally my world. I treat them like they were my kids and they’re all so beautiful with such individual personalities. Even just seeing the small cut on one of her scales was hard for me to see. They have my heart and I love them and the thought of them being hurt is beyond 9
As you could see we tried to clearly tell the local hunters to be careful with the machete :) Nothing bad happened to the snake and we released it back to nature.
Control your emotions.
People make me sick! They should NEVER be taking any creature from the wild! Captive bred only should be sold. Pretty sure here in the uk it's illegal to trade/buy wild caught reptiles/any wildlife... Disgusting thing to do!!
People still want snakes from the wild, it is sad.
This is really sad, I couldn't watch it all. There are so many of these in captive populations that it is criminal to sell wild caught animals.
TC how do you think snakes were obtained to breed in captivity??
@@johnschlesinger2009 The keepers are creating this market, they should stop wanting animals from the wild.
@@LivingZoology that is impossible without first taking some from the wild.
Hope you dont take captive snacks for your vidéo like in Costa Rica 😜 liar… your guide told me 😂
Are you talking about the guide Luis? He is a liar and we will never go with him again. He told us that they found some snakes before we came and it looked suspicious for us as we saw them. We figured out that those snakes were probably not recently found. By the way, it happens from time to time that the locals think that we are so stupid that they can fool us. Was this snake put into the hole before we came? We don’t know. We wanted to go look for our own wild Ball python. If the locals played it on us, it was well prepared, it looked natural.
I hope there is a translation into Arabic
We don't have one, very sorry!
