The rise, fall, and rise again of Nintendo.
And fall again
@@Kbxbigbro808 When? It's looking that train isn't stopping any time soon. They just surpassed the PS4's lifetime sales and are still pulling 1 mil weekly during the holidays.
@@No-onesgayformoleman Read what u just wrote ‘’during the holidays’’ It’s only the holidays lmao what about after ? And it’s not even about sales it’s about the product it self good sales don’t mean it’s a good product
@@Kbxbigbro808 Good product is subjective.
This graph is more about a console's success. Since it's still selling, it's probably a good product to a lot of people.
Also, hardly any console pulls 1 mil during the holidays 5 years in the market, it's just a statement to it's current state of success. It pulls 300,000 regularly weekly, well above the competition's previous and current gen on the slow time of the year so it's not really going down at all.
Now, if the console isn't good to you then more power to you mate. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
@@Kbxbigbro808 actually people buy switch because of Portability and lots of good exclusives which Xbox and playstation don't have. Gaming is not about graphics it's about how much you enjoy it
Nintendo really had that statement of “you don’t need the highest quality graphics to have the most fun” all consoles are beautiful but Nintendo will always be dear to my heart
And yet my favourite Nintendo consoles were the most powerful of their time (SNES, N64 and GC).
@@Ladiesman-js3kt I'm pretty sure PS1 was more powerful than N64, but I agree with you. N64, GCN, and DS is the best era of nintendo.
@@TheUnreadableUser N64 was more powerful, but PS1 had more space and better audio quality.
n for children
That is so godamn right-
I still have my WiiU in the house also I downloaded hacks so I can play Zelda Breath of the Wild on it but that didn’t even matter!
I love how you can clearly see when backwards compatibility ended between generations of consoles
Can you elaborate? When was that change?
I'm interested to know when that change happened.
@Patrick Weston sure.
Firstly: in the early days of consoles a lot of games were produced for both the current and previous generation of consoles. This was noticeable in both Nintendo and Sony products as every generation that they had launched kept assets (whether it be software or hardware) from the previous platforms that allowed the sale of both newer and older generation consoles and games. This is why for the most part both of these companies had multiple consoles on the timeline at a time for most of the video. This stopped for Nintendo when the switch was released, as there is zero backwards compatibility without rebuying any of their games. Sony is still currently releasing games for both the PS4 and PS5 though, which is why both consoles are still actively selling at the end of this video.
Secondly: this is notible in the fact that Microsoft elects to kill off the previous generation by discontinuing the production of anything related to their older consoles (not when the newest console is released, but very soon after), thus killing any sort of backwards compatibility. This results in fewer of their consoles lasting long on the timeline after the newest generation is released. This is most noticeable between the Xbox one and series x as there was zero compatibility for older games at launch of the XSX.
@@LeonisYT I think you guys have the wrong definition for backwards compatibility lol. Backwards compatibility is just the ability to play previous gen games on newer consoles. Microsoft seems to have a better track record here - Xbox Series can play One, 360, and a few original Xbox games, while PlayStation 5 only supports the PlayStation 4 library.
I think you’re thinking of cross-generation games like God of War Ragnarok, releasing both on PlayStation 4 and 5.
Microsoft and Sony are both really matching each other in cross-gen commitments right now, most major exclusives have released for both their 8th and 9th generation systems. Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 play on both Xbox One and Xbox Series, akin to Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok on PlayStation 4 and 5.
Microsoft discontinued the Xbox One line of consoles faster than Sony with their 8th generation console, but it’s worth noting that PlayStation 5 has also been plagued with production issues and parts shortages which Microsoft has not experienced to the same degree. Sony might just be keeping PS4 around until PS5 shortages end.
Either way, both companies are continuing to support their 8th generation consoles - Xbox One and PlayStation 4 definitely have a fair bit of life left in them.
@@Mancan76 that's why i liked my xbox one more than my ps4 because I could play xbox games on it
The Xbox 360 - PS3 - Wii generation is my favourite. I hope we get a competitive generation like that again this generation
Yeah those were some fun times
Классно иметь было консоли в эти времена
I love that era and glad to grew in that time. For now the switch is still on the throne even though it is count as the mid-last gen console
The GOAT era! Used to have fun arguments about this!
As a proud owner of og ps2 I love how it stayed more than a decade.
@Why Not Just Sub? Still have one of them but recently gave up to work(
Og PS2 is the best. Got mine in 2000 and it still works perfectly, played Red Faction on it yesterday.
Most sold console of all time for a reason.
Having its life cycle end in the same year that the PS4 launched is pretty wild to think about. The PS2 was beasting for 13 years. 🤟
Not only the most selling but also the longest support in a console. There's no other console until today survived for total 13.5 years. Even though it's barely getting any new game since 2010 and the graphics of the game released in the early 2010's TBH stayed the same since 2007 all those things are unbeatable.
PS2 was King for a long time no competition during its generation, the PS3 and 360 were toe and toe while the Wii surpassed both but quickly dropped after 2011, the PS4 was so far ahead the WiiU and Xbone, but with PS5, it's somewhat toe and toe with Series X/S. Very interesting
Wii was trash ps3 had real games
Xbox was never toe to toe with Playstation. Overall sales ps always dominate
@@Max-bm5rs and ps3 had more exclusive plus free online play need I go on.
@@kobrathadon4956 99% lol. Don't agree with it being trash but it was gimmicky. Since original NES the Wii was by far my least played console of all time. Nintendo was smart and learned early on they couldn't compete with Sony and Microsoft head to head so they became more family and kid oriented which has served them well. And while Nintendo has some really good games they don't hold a candle to what's on Playstation and Xbox. Particularly Sony's first party games blow away all the others.
@@undie3x7 That may be the case for the ps3 era, but not this era. The only ps5 exclusive worth playing is ratchet and clank. The switch is full of great exclusives.
Every time Microsoft got close, Sony was like "Not so fast" dude.
Xbox 360 and PS3 put up a great battle, even selling almost the same amount in the end.
True but Nintendo Wii won that generation
@@aganbraganca4156yeah it did but same time the wii wasn’t same demographic. For more hardcore the 360 and ps3 was where to go. I loved the wii it was my first console and as a kid it opened me up to then get a 360. The wii did it very well for what it was and Nintendo did well in making the games for it
The 7th generation is the most interesting for 21st centuries console battle (start from 6th generations) because there's no console that end up only sold less than 80 million units. So, it's quite balanced. The ds start the 7th generation and it became the most selling handheld console of all time up to this day with only 3 million units less than ps2. Phenomenal generations and it is also first generation for HD gaming and online consoles.
I would love to see a similar visualization of console sales, but cumulative all-time sales rather than quarterly sales.
I have it. Posted a week ago.
@@DataIsBeautifulOfficial it’s not there anymore
ua-cam.com/video/MoKdFZ8Bv9Q/v-deo.html
A lot of people forget the Sony/ Microsoft battle is for second place. Nintendo leaves those 2 in the dust. According to wiki, the original NES has more sales than the estimated sales on xbox one x or xbox one. I forget which one. Ps2 sold amazingly because it was a good console but also because it was the cheapest dvd player at the time. Ps3 with blurays, ps4 with exclusives. Xbox gamers really get the short end.
@@lasaldude Sony fans have the downside of playing on the gaystation though. Don't say naughty words and always remember that fuckin pad is recording everything you say 🤗
I’m sure Nintendo’s next console will be a format similar to the Switch. They always dominated the portable market; so, it’s a no-brainer for them to continue this method.
@El que comenta I don't think it hurts the quality of games. Just look at The Witcher 3 and The Legend of Zelda: BotW. Other than a few hiccups,
Both games run great on the Switch. The problem is Gamefreak is a lazy company, and they know no matter how low their budget is in developing their pokemon games, people will buy the games regardless. This coming from a big Pokemon fan.
Unless you mean quality as in resolution... we do need new hardware.

3DS didn't battle any consoles, they're different markets. Only competition was Vita.
That would have to go to the Gameboy
And more surprising is Xbox one selling discontinued at November 2021 and 3DS stop at February 2022 so it's still pretty new and warm. Imagine that X1 only survived for 8 years of selling while 3DS can survive for 11. Big applause to 3DS.

Imagine the Switch sales boost in April/May if Nintendo were to finally give the Switch a significant price drop in time for Tears of the Kingdom
But when switch just launched the Ps4 cost at $399 and Xbox one cost at $499.
Insane how the Switch keeps selling 4-5 millions at Christmas, four years in a row! But yes, little children getting older, old enough to get their own switches.

I love these videos. My only criticism, is the changing scale on the X-Axis. I can see why it's done for "video-sake," but it makes it harder to see yearly trends and overall market share. But continue doing these. They are amazing!

Its amazing how the psx stayed relevant for so long, also you can clearly see why those companies took the decisions that they took, its like they were watching the same animation, why playstation never embraced that online verification and why nintendo bet for the portable devices, their ds, 3ds and switch basically took over the market. I think that heir hardware is the most durable and their games have always been the best, their weak point is that its not powerful and state of the art, but like they say, games sell consoles. On the other hand the anti consumer practices of xbox always keep them behind since the mandatory online verification, maybe the history would have been different if they ditched that.

The PSX sold until march 2006. That's more than 11 years even we knew their last game FIFA 2005 released in October 2004 which is almost a decade. But even after 17 months of no support people still buy PSX. Nintendo is the lord of portables we all know.

Nintendo has always strong IP like Pokemon, Mario, Zelda, you can name it so their consoles always sells a good amount. Being handheld is a plus. Sony is like the go to for anyone's console gaming and having many Japan Studio supporting it helps a good amount at least until they decided to move to America with the dumb censorship rule XD.
Xbox is never that famous in Asia is the thin (and honestly Asia is a big continent). I guess it is more famous in other continent thus the image? Legacy and exclusives. Nintendo and Sony have franchises and characters that are loved by millions, not so much Sony nowadays since all they focus is 7 IPs but they do sell a lot to casuals. Microsoft only has Halo that has 1 good and bad decade, Gears, Forza...that's about it. They bought Rareware for about 20 years and did absolutely nothing iconic with them, minus KI3 because of Maximilian Dood. It's good but doesn't compare to what they made with Nintendo, also they didn't get enough money so story mode and finishers look so jank compared to games with triple the amount of money like Mortal Kombat.
It's intresting seeing how in the past, the new gen consoles always over took the old ones when they released, but the switch never experienced that and even experienced it's peak in sales during that time.

Out of all of these, I have Nintendo 64, Xbox 360, Wii U, Xbox One, & Nintendo Switch. My DSI stopped working years ago, so I wouldn't count it, I'm hoping to get an Xbox Series X.
Love how clear are the moments when a pokemon game launchs on Nintendo DS
Fun fact: despite the Wii’s success, it was never the #1 selling console in a monthly span
Let me see your source
Wii never had success
