As someone who was diagnosed with generalized anxiety pretty young, and ADHD and autism as I got older, I really want to thank you for bringing that all up in this video!!! I really agreed with pretty much everything you had to say, and I think you said it in a really respectful and thoughtful way. My personal language learning journey has been interesting, because I learned Latin in school for almost 4 years, but retained next to nothing, but over the past year I've been self studying Mandarin Chinese, and I'm almost at a B1 level. So the difference in learning methods in school vs what I did for myself made a *huge* difference, and it's been a huge journey in figuring out how I learn best. I especially like the whole talk you had near the end about consuming content critically. I think it's super important to have media literacy in that way, and I love the way you talked about it in a way that isn't negative towards content creators but is also very serious about how we interact with their content. Thank you so much for this video, and good luck with your language journey!
@@AriS-ym8ec A lot of my methods have evolved over the past year as I've developed my skill with the language. At first, I used mostly beginner youtube videos, and the app HelloChinese. As I got better, I started to look at a few more things, but most importantly, after a few months I started using HelloTalk. I've continued to chat with exchange partners on there, and have added other resources like Journaly, Language Reactor, and just this week I started on some graded readers. Another thing that I started about a month ago is lessons on italki. I take notes on pretty much everything I do (which has been interesting to figure out a good method to do), and keep a daily journal in Chinese. My primary advice is to just try out a whole bunch of things and see what works best for you! I do recommend doing at least a month of regular self study before starting italki lessons or going on hellotalk, just so you'll get the most out of it and feel comfortable with at least the very basics. Let me know if you have any specific questions!!!
I absolutely agree with everything you’ve said but I want to add something to the discussion about influencers motivating their audience when they have different motivations. When I’m in the need for inspiration, I love watching language learning and study vlogs. I might not have the time to dedicate five hours of my day to grammar and vocabulary, but after watching someone else do it, I make sure I spend thirty minutes or an hour doing a small exercise. Your success is not at my expense. It benefits me! I hope you can make this your full time job. Let me know what I can do to help you achieve that.
@tbenavente That sounds amazing! I would definitely consider joining. Off the top of my head, I would be interested in things like language challenges, study schedule templates, journal/topic prompts, and study with me videos (live or recorded or both if you're comfortable).
I'm also an Autistic adult and have ADHD and C-PTSD, etc. It's so important to hear the perspectives of others with our same disabilities! And yes-- different people (even if they have the same disability!) have different ways of learning, being motivated, having energy, processing information, etc. There is no one-size-fits-all. "At the same time, people want you to be an expert, but also they want you to be relatable." Yes. I think this is influenced a lot by the shift from UA-cam as a social media community-focused platform to a professional-leaning platform... Now audiences expect people to be perfect and perfectly reliable like a professional (even as they don't make a lot, if any compensation for it), while also being entertaining and have a lot of glamor and high-end production (that requires a team of people behind the scenes) while being only one person... The expectations around this remind me of The Society of the Spectacle: the idea that someone who has endless energy, time, ability, perfection, to be an "influencer" to meet all those expectations could be "just like me"/ "a normal person with an average life" (i.e. relatable, accessible) is based on myths and illusions-- especially the myth and illusion of equal opportunity.
thanks a million for this video. i appreciate the fact that you've shared your autism diagnosis with us. it's important to talk about it, and for some reason i felt such a relief after you talked about mental health. love everything u do!
What a great video - I will never be a polyglot but I watch several channels for fun (I'm only learning Italian) and I do think you bring something different to the table. It looks hard to be a language youtuber, I see people branching out into making videos about other topics and I wonder if that's because it's hard to find that unique angle. I massively appreciate your honesty I was wondering how you can spend 1-2+ hours a day on a language, how you fit that in, and make (such high quality!) videos and you've answered my question. Congratulations on the 20k! 🎉
Thank you for another excellent discussion. I feel like everything you say in all of your videos is so well worded, nuanced, and honestly just a great support. A big thank you from someone who also has the special talent to turn everything she loves into something that causes her stress.😅 Cheers!
Thanks Tanya: I sometimes feel undiagnosed with whatever is keeping me from being anything like successful. I didn’t have the best childhood so there could be a few reasons there. I am now rather old, 70 and not in the best of health. At times I say that I only want to learn more Spanish and be more confident in speaking, reading and writing it. Well, “confident” is a big deal. Thank God for your parents who felt the need to get you started in your learning journey. I started rather late in my study of Spanish; in my mid forties. I have had ups and downs. I won’t bore anyone with the details. Just wanted to say really that you are appreciated ❤.
Beautiful video Tanya. Yup, I also will make anything that I love stressful. Very well said that there's this divide between content creation (expert vs being relatable). Really validating as someone who is also building up a channel and trying to be more transparent while actually making a living. Really validating and amazing video!
I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with how people are learning we need to find ways that work for us. I also watched a bunch of the learning videos, but the truth is a lot of people in language learning do not 1. have full-time classes or 2. full-time jobs. I spent years learning Japanese and lived there and thought I retained nothing, but the truth is when I went back to using apps as a passive way to remember my studies I realized I retained a lot of it long term and decided to casually go back into learning it in a way that fits my schedule. So the rate of learning doesn't matter just make sure you don't burn yourself out trying to compete with UA-camrs or anyone else that have way more time to study.
Thank you for sharing and being so open. I find your videos very inspiring and always find a takeaway that is helpful. I think you said it all. I am currently learning Italian and have a lot of challenges with my memory and consistency so I often watch language-learning videos for a boost of motivation. I do find some videos leave me feeling bad that I haven't progressed very fast but I always step away when I feel like that. I think you do a great job of keeping things real and I appreciate that. I wish you the best in your endeavors and hope you will still be able to make videos from time to time but I understand and thank you for all that you have done.
This video is amazingly insightful. I'm so impressed with how you were able to stand back and reflect upon yourself so objectively, almost like you were studying yourself (and others in your position) without a personal bias. Incredibly hard to do. Very well done - I learned a lot!

Hey Tanya, thank you for sharing your experience. I've been procratinating with one work task for a week. After watching your video I somehow can find the will to start working on that. Regarding your recomendation of the book "Laziness does not exist", tbh I think it does exist and I am a lazy person. Advice in general can be either good or bad depending on how it’s presented from one person to another. What I have personally learned is that any advice even in language learning is to take it with a grain of salt because the advice could be beneficial for that particular person but may not be beneficial for you.
I've been trying to learn English since last year (I only speak Spanish) and I've been feeling very guilty for not starting earlier because I've been comparing myself with people who have a different context. This video encourages me to continue on my journey.
@@30C_30C Hi! So cool you're learning English! I'm currently learning Spanish myself :) My favourite youtubers next to Tanya are: Elysse Speaks, İclal, and Lindie Botes! Acabo de encontrar tu canal y llevo un buen rato mirando tus vídeos, creo que es lo que me hacía falta. I consider myself bilingual in Spanish and English, albeit I want to learn more languages, after not doing any new language learning in college for a really long while I picked up Mandarin Chinese, and while I'm far from my goal I felt like I'm progressing? But something is wrong with how most people approach language learning, I watched in your other videos how you don't consider speaking a goal in some languages (I also don't really, I want to be able to use my language in an emergency or if I ever travel to China but that's not why I'm learning), as well as how we just need to take it chill. I'm autistic and even though I like doing this I find like some neurotypical advice I see doesn't really apply to me.
So glad to find another autistic person with languages as a special interest!! How do people learn languages without an element of obsession or the need for repetitive routine?
From what I'd seen of your content I did assume you were a perfect 💯 but that never came across as annoying. Now I learn that you're not 😲 you're relatability has shot up. All the best for whatever course in life you decide to go with next.
Hi Tanya, lately I feel overwhelmed with my language learning and feel I'm getting nowhere. Is it a mistake, you think, to try and fit in a lot of language studies all in one day? And moreover, do you feel it's best to focus on one language at a time until achieving some level proficiency before moving on to the next? Also, how do you keep track of your hours spent studying, or how do you log this if you do at all? Thank you!!
One of the less useful pieces of advice is the Internet obsessed with input. It seems to be great for false debutants, people who had classes in school and know something about the structure of the language or are learning a language from the same language family (like I understand a lot of Ukrainians without putting even half the effort I put into Chinese). Also, you are the first language UA-camr who doesn't focus as much on speaking and much more on content consumption.
Nothing will make you decide language learning advice is context dependent than learning a language that is not popular to learn and having different priorities than most learners. I enjoy language learning content just for the feeling of being part of some community. I don't expect to get anything useful out of it. I had that expectation when I first started trying to learn a language and I wasted half a year as a result, just from trying to make that advice fit. I'm of the opinion that at this point everything that can be said about how to learn a language has been said and any further discussion is coming from people procrastinating their own studying or trying to make a buck. So, while I still enjoy that kind of content, I don't take it seriously.
Hiiiii ! I just subcribed to your channel some days ago. So, I'm writing to you cause I would really like you to post a complete video of how you learn greek. I started learning greek 2 months ago for LOVE 💖 ans I would really appreciate you to help me 🙂 PS : sorry if there is any orthograph errors english isn't my first language. Bye, Pablo 😜
As someone with a degree in Language Teaching and a Master’s Degree in Modern Languages (as well as Generalized Anxiety Disorder): All language learning advice on UA-cam is BAD
@@TheFryedIScream I’m generalizing a bit but it’s fair considering all language learning videos have the same problems: -there are decades worth of research when it comes to language learning/acquisition and these people either ignore it (and give advice based only on their very limited experience) or find an article/author that resonates with their way of learning and use it to promote a very specific technique that won’t be beneficial for the rest. Similarly, when they DO use research to back up what they are saying in their videos, they do it in the most poor way possible. Guess what? To actually know the best way for people to learn something as complex as a language you need to be trained in such field. Language teachers struggle to find the right way to teach within their classrooms because there is no “right way” to teach a language all the time, it’s about their needs, their motivations, their backgrounds and a thousand other factors, and these people online just compile a list of 7 tips and share it like that’s super useful
I think that Tanya made a point in this video of saying that most people making language-learning content videos are not experts and that we should not take their advice as gospel, and that they are giving advice that works for them and not necessarily for everyone else. @@mrpakocool

Можно для ясности узнать, будете ли вы продолжать вести свой канал на русском языке?
Да, как только/если появятся свободные деньги на монтажера

You are falling for the same trap that many language learning videos do. There is only one way to acquire a language...listen
As someone with a degree in Language Teaching and a Master’s Degree in Modern Languages (as well as Generalized Anxiety Disorder):
All language learning advice on UA-cam is BAD
Sadly, that includes this channel as well
!! i’m interested to know what exactly is bad
@@TheFryedIScream I’m generalizing a bit but it’s fair considering all language learning videos have the same problems:
-there are decades worth of research when it comes to language learning/acquisition and these people either ignore it (and give advice based only on their very limited experience) or find an article/author that resonates with their way of learning and use it to promote a very specific technique that won’t be beneficial for the rest.
