I LOVED THIS VIDEO SO MUCH I FEEL SO HONOREDDDD i’m sorry my way ruined your mojo but i’m glad it gave you perspective!! I learned a little something too… i fall into those exact same patterns and i need more discipline too. maybe i’ll do a mirror of this on my channel, i hadn’t thought about it before 🤔
I'm so glad you liked it!!! I honestly only found it positive, I wish I could keep my mojo without as much structure haha And I would love to see that 👀👀
Great video! Lots of great points! Yes -- I classify Elysse as a learner who puts a super high emphasis on speaking. And looks like that is her main goal -- so a great goal for her (based on her goals and what she likes to do). IMO the main thing is motivation -- keeping yourself motivated to log the training hours you need to learn the language. On my end I like reading (and I consider it the most "efficient" method to increase your vocab) so I put more time using reading to learn languages than listening or speaking -- although will say if you do have to put time into listening to be good at listening, and you have to put time into speaking if you want to be good at speaking. I do love your logging hours idea. Yeah, I wish I'd done that, I can only roughly estimate the hours I've put in -- it's work to log hours (and you have to be consistent about it) -- but it would be so cool to have my hours logged.
@@PolyglotProgress It's all about amassing efficient training hours. Either ad-hoc hours or structured hours. Elysse actually seems good about amassing lots of ad-hoc hours. 😂
I’m learning Arabic rn, and a listening activity I do is playing vocab videos on youtube (e.g. 100 words for everyday life) and writing down how I think the word is spelled. That way, I can work on distinguishing similar sounds and can also connect words I might have heard but haven’t fully committed to memory.
It's always fun to switch up learning methods for a little while. I used to study with songs more often... this makes me want to reintroduce that activity into my study regimen!
I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process and communication skills in English and other languages.😊
Have you ever tried Pimsleur? -- that's really kind of what Pimsleur is all about -- but a little more about using anticipation and spaced repetition (spaced repetition is more about being efficient in your use of repetition). I love Pimsleur!! Your method is kind of like how kids learn-- they repeat and repeat 😂 -- and it works because all kids learn their native language. 🙂
This video was so interesting. I’m a HUGE fan of Elysse and have often wondered how she’s acquired such high levels with her languages with a routine so chill. Witchcraft is the answer I suppose because I’m very much like you. If I don’t check off the boxes (flash cards, mandatory listening, italki etc) early in the day, it prob won’t get done. I think what didn’t help you was being so new in Bulgarian. Had it not been for that you could’ve thrown a movie or playlist on in the language and called it studying like I do 😂
Loll that’s me with French. I’m like - Yh it’s fine I’ve watched a 10-15 min UA-cam video today 🫠🫠 (tbf tho French isn’t my priority hahahah but I’d still love to have a bit more discipline so I could improve instead of just maintain ish) Edit: typo
I personally don't enjoy translating songs at a beginner level. It makes it feel like I'm studying every time I listen to those songs. Even after ten years. I've found that listening to A LOT of music in a specific language helps me remember vocabulary and improve my listening comprehension without even having to try. With my latest target language I just listened to whatever music I like. As my general level got higher I naturally got better at understanding songs without it feeling like studying. Now that I'm at an intermediate level I like looking at the lyrics on spotify if I do have trouble understanding some things. It feels a lot better at an intermediate level.
My language learning methods couldn’t be farther away from Elysse’s. Still, I love watching her videos (especially because I know she speaks my native language beautifully- the language being Portuguese) and your channel is also one of my favorites when it comes to language learning. This was a really fun idea that I think I should try some time. After all, it’s still learning and improving in the target language. Great video 👏👏 Suggestion: t Matt vs Japan (Refold method). Would be interested to see you take the challenge.
This is so awesome! Definitely fun to test out different methods when learning languages. I may have to try this with my own language learning 😊 thanks for sharing
This was so fun to watch!!! Have you ever tried transcribing audio as a listening exercise? I find it really helpful personally, and also super engrossing/more structured.
I've been meaning to try it!! I've had to transcribe a lot in my native language and haaate doing it so I've put it off lol but I feel like I'll enjoy it as a language exercise!
Please do Iclal next, she's a Turkish polyglot. I feel like she learns languages to a relatively good level in a shorter span of time than one would imagine so it'd be good to analyse and apply some of her methods i think. She also usually speaks at a faster pace which I find fascinating and has often been told by natives that her pronunciation is really good.
Nice concept and a great way to really test what does or doesn't work in your own learning. I think it's really easy to get stale and stuck with our ways of learning, ignoring when we need to shake things up a bit. Will definitely give the song translation a go!
Really enjoyed watching this video. It’s interesting how everyone has their own method/way of learning languages, I think this will be a great series for the channel! 🙌🏽 also I really like the way this was edited !
Cool! It's always nice to experiment and I've incorporated things that I've seen in your videos and also Elysse's! 😁 And for the next videos I'd like to suggest Lindie Botes and Annabeth Chase 😊
I liked the video. I have much in my target language by writing down Musik in listening to the same song. The Musik I seem to retain longer by listening and writing down the words .
I have been listening to a song I really like in French. I'm beginning to be able to understand some of it but I like the idea of translating it into English (a little at a time) French has been my focus language this year but next year I also would like to start learning Polish and Hebrew. Thanks for a great video!
I will say you will learn a language if you do two things: 1) You are truly motivated and stay motivated!! and 2) you put in the training hours. If you do both of these things you will learn. Methods beyond this are IMO all around staying motivated and putting in the hours (regardless if you are on a 1 year, 2 year, 4 year, or longer plan). With some methods being more "efficient" than others -- meaning efficient methods will give you slightly better results. But believe me "motivation" is king!!
The Easy series!! "Easy German", "Easy Spanish", "Easy Portuguese", "Easy French". They don't have all languages but for what they have amazing!! I'm learning Portuguese and can definitely recommend some learning channels that have native speakers in Portugues. On language learning theory (to keep you motivated) -- definitely Steve Kaufman.

tbh I don’t know where I’d be rn without the language learning community on UA-cam 👀💦 I loved this video a lot!
Saaaaaame I love the community so much

Lindie Botes (since that will definitely let you keep multiple languages in your routine)
I definitely want to try learning like Lindie at some point!!

Is because you make emotional associations with the songs, That's very effective
Keep up the good work
Honestly, things you do at a beginner level is quite limited.
This is so rad! Two of my fav language learning youtubers. the crossover we all needed tbh

I love Robin's videos and posts! Definitely adding him to my list :)
a collab? between my two favourite language channels? I can't 😭

Thank you! I definitely agree! Changing it up is so important :)
I'm gonna give it a try for my speaking in Spanish. Thanks for the tips.
Whenever I don’t feel like studying I’ll listen to some Spanish songs/ watch some cartoons in Spanish

I’m really excited for this series of videos! How about Steve Kaufman and Lindie Botes!
Thank you for the suggestions!
hooowz Lindie Botez
Also I'd love to see you try something like the refold method, it would be really interesting to hear your take/opinions on it!
Ooh that's a great idea! I'll add it to my list :)

Great idea for a video series. Kind of like reviewing an app. I look forward to the next one.
Thanks Nendo!
This is such a cool format, can't wait for you to try out more
Thanks, Benjamin!!
