But even statues crumble if they're made to wait, possibly referencing the statute of Diana Of Ephesus. The original statue of Diana crumbled while waiting to be shipped to London in the 6th century due to years of neglect, succumbing to the passage of time and the elements. Diana of Ephesus was the goddess of fertility, childbirth, and the moon. She was also known as Artemis in Greek.. Considering the song is followed by Cassandra, another Greek mythology character this seems plausible. Loved your brief but very insightful introduction to fate in literature abd hoping you do a video on the song Cassandra as well!
The bridge. Always the bridge. The visuals she gives us of her pain is so loud! Sounding like an infant, howling like a wolf at the moon (with the oooooh-ooohOOHs in between there) - ugh the story telling is so good! I also get stuck in the chorus’ melody… I will sing it over and over as if I’m the one begging for a change in fate.
Megan, l thought it was interesting how you talked about and tied the wise women in sleeping beauty to the idea of fate, then Taylor refernces that in her line "poison blood from the wound of the pricked hand", and how in referencing that she kind of illustrated both her own agency and lack of agency in her fate, just like sleeping beauty could have avoided using the spinning wheel and wouldnt have been poisoned by it, but at the same time she didnt know it was poison.
@@allanaaron2281 The line Eve got bitten is similar. Just like Eve chose eat the fruit, Taylor thinks she chose this career and the fame and so everything else that comes with it is just her fate now. Maybe she felt that choosing this career or love was kind of an either/or kind of situation.
OMG i didn't expect this, so amazing, so coll! Also line "sealed my fate, no sign of soulmate" it's a clear reference to line from cruel summer "every night that summer just to seal my fate"
Omg what a great start of the year! This song is one of my all-time favorites from her, even though i had no idea of all these literally references, goes to show the effort and research she puts into her music (when she really wants to at least lol), thank you for this, hope your channel continues to grow a lot more on 2025!! ❤
I gave “Spending my last coins so someone will tell me it'll be okay” a little more modern reading (though your interpretation is possibly the most correct one given the rest of the song), but when you feel that kind of desperate you look for therapists, for psychologists, someone professional hoping they will get you out of that mental state and feelings of dispair
Love this analysis and the knowledge you shared to us! This song is a standout for me and it's sad that not a lot of people knows this song. I really love the bridge of this song, here's my interpretation of it. And I sound like an infant - been crying non stop, waiting for someone to calm her, like a baby Feeling like the very last drops of an ink pen - was beginning to feel weak/lose hope to keep going A greater woman stays cool - wanted to act strong and ignore the pain But I howl like a wolf at the moon - like a lone wolf, she was lonely and looking for anyone who could save her from that And I look unstable Gathered with a coven round a sorceress' table - she was desperate, to the point she would do everything and anything, good or bad to change her fate A greater woman has faith, but even statues crumble if they're made to wait - she was losing her patience in waiting for something that even her wasn't sure if it was real or not, in this case, her soulmate The rest is pretty much self explanatory, but these lyrics just haunts me every night. It also doesn't help that I relate to them. 😢😂
I love this and all your reviews. This is one of the best songs on TTPD in my opinion. Also, Id love it if you had time and interest in doing a video analysing her "In Summarion" poem.
Excellent video! When you were talking about more modern applications of the fate theme, I couldn't help but think of "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck, which explores the reinterpretation of the "thou shalt" from the Bible. Instead of "thou shalt," the book concludes that it is actually "thou mayest" -- meaning, we have a choice. We have agency.
Sounds like this could be a theme song for Buffy. Ya know, the Vampire Slayer. I mean, she has a prophecy hanging over her head and she obviously wants love and aren't those situations complicated as all heck? Just a theory.
The spindles in sleeping beauty are actually also very culturally significant at that time (meaning the choice of the spindle bringing the death of all things is highly symbolic) Spinning was the work of women, pqrticularly grown women. When the princess pricks her finger, its symbolic of 1) her being so naive aka young that she cannot even handle a spindle (which doesnt have a sharp end!) and 2) she is thus entering her initiation ritual of becoming a grown woman. Sleeping Beauty is part of the erotic fairytales, her story is about her parents wanting her not to grow up and she will do anyway. She falls asleep before girls her age usually had their first period back then. And she sleeps until the prince kisses her which wakes her up again. To me, this means, that you cannot stop time and maturing, you will literally sleep away your life. You need to grow up and face new challenges or else you won't really live. (For women back then, living meant being a wife and mother, which is why her journey needs a seccsual awakening aka love/a prince)
Do you have a favorite line from The Prophecy? 🤔

I really love the bridge of this song, here's my interpretation of it.
And I sound like an infant - been crying non stop, waiting for someone to calm her, like a baby
Feeling like the very last drops of an ink pen - was beginning to feel weak/lose hope to keep going
A greater woman stays cool - wanted to act strong and ignore the pain
But I howl like a wolf at the moon - like a lone wolf, she was lonely and looking for anyone who could save her from that
And I look unstable
Gathered with a coven round a sorceress' table - she was desperate, to the point she would do everything and anything, good or bad to change her fate
A greater woman has faith, but even statues crumble if they're made to wait - she was losing her patience in waiting for something that even her wasn't sure if it was real or not, in this case, her soulmate
The rest is pretty much self explanatory, but these lyrics just haunts me every night. It also doesn't help that I relate to them. 😢😂
Thanks for sharing your thoughts ^.^ love it - yes so much desperation in these lines. Super heartbreaking :( (and I'm sorry you relate :( )
