The thing is that nobody who was running things actually did anything, so Eric took it upon himself to walk out and do something about it. He didn't have to do anything but saw what was happening and knew someone had to do something. He was probably the only one who could have pulled it off too, being able to walk out and cut a promo on the spot without any planning at all while changing the match finish at the same time. He did the best he could.
No you don’t have to admire it. You have to wonder how so many people on staff for the production - from in-ring and on-camera, to those behind the scenes - did not notice a man so clearly incapable of functioning, to walk past a room full of people at Gorilla, to be allowed to enter a ring on worldwide television. I am not excusing Jeff’s behavior, but I am not letting TNA off the hook. How was this missed?
One thing people always forget to mention about WrestleMania X-7 is that it was held in Houston Texas, and the crowd always was on Stone Cold's side for the entirety of the match. At the end, the crowd thought Vince did a face turn, instead of realizing Austin became heel.
Several months ago, IMPACT Wrestling actually scheduled this entire PPV to be uploaded to their UA-cam channel, but they changed their minds and cancelled. This was pretty soon after Jeff Hardy's most recent DUI, so the timing was just awful.
I think it's always a tad unfair to pick on the end of Wrestlemania X7. In the long run it didn't work out but it had the chance to reinvent a beloved character. They did it much better with Daniel Bryan in 2018. They did turn Stone Cold back to baby-face but within the year it came to an end for a variety of reasons.
as a tna fan from this era and a jeff fan this show was so frustrating someone should've stopped jeff from going out and jeff has been refusing help for his issues for decades of this point.

He had disappeared ofr hours, creating a fuss meaning staff werent in their usual positions. Jeff turned up and went on before anyone could do anything. TNA management are still trash but its not like they watched him go on like that.
Now see that main Event could've been fixed if that number one contender match would've had an actual winner & have them pull a double duty match, with either Sting winner due to fatigue of #1 contender or an immediate win for the newly won contender.

Sting is certainly not a jobber, in fact he's a much bigger star than either Taker or Hunter, yet WWE certainly would have had him do the job for Taker as they did with Hunter.

I remember watching this show live. I remember thinking before the main even that the show had been really underwhelming so far, but Jeff Hardy vs Sting is up next and that should be a fantastic match. Yeah, the show sucked.
The fate of TNA is just another indication that we're living in the shittest of timelines. In other, better realities, TNA gets that 2 hour timeslot in the late 00s and uses it to continue to push their "X Division" guys and they rise to become a legit competitor to WWE (instead of course they used it to become the sequel to WCW). We know all those guys can handle high spots on the card for a major promotion because so many went on to do so in WWE.
Yes Jeff was struggling with addiction but what kind of management le5s him even walk down to the ring? Eric has all the excuses and puts it all on Jeff when really he let him go to the ring knowing he was fucked up. No excuse for that.
the only way to end the show on a high note would have been to send out the #1 contender to cash in right away for a title match. They couldn't do so because they booked the Double DQ. Your next best bet? Have AJ suit up again and give sting another match against him. 12 years of hindsight, and this is the best possible face saving scenario I could come up with.

TNA put all their eggs in the 3-3-11 WM Taker return knockoff videos and treated this as a total knockoff. IIRC the Ultimate X wasn't even announced. I always laughed at this "damaging TNA business" because nobody bought this show in the first place.

PPVs don’t usually have dark matches. Maybe TNAs did but I’m pretty sure they don’t. Bruce Prichard even said there wasn’t really anyone back there. But regardless you gotta put yourself in their shoes. Both Prichard and Bischoff claim nobody knew till his entrance music started he was intoxicated. So you’re not gonna say “go grab so and so and tell them they gotta wrestle sting for 20 min” then also come up with a reason that match would make sense. Everything is happening out of nowhere and you’re panicking. Eric going out there was the audible. He was letting them know it was a quick fall. Cut your losses and leave was their mindset

And the worst part is... this isn't even the worst victory road! Nobody planned for Jeff Hardy to come out clearly with his mental template having achieved warp speed and left this world behind. Somebody actually booked a match pitting an unathletic celebrity against a valet. Somebody planned that.
He probably didn’t tell Jeff it was gonna end that fast lol, you can see him physically trying to kick out while in the pin with all his force. That mixed with how confused he was after the pinfall tells me he expected it to go on longer or what was told to him didn’t sink in. Edit: I couldn’t imagine passing up a chance to face the undertaker at Wrestlemania, something that’s gonna be the biggest check you’ve ever gotten from wrestling out of a single match, for a match that turned out to be that bad bad.
A non-useful note: Bryan references the word 'fum(b)' during the video; matching the words dumb and fun. In a non-important twist, that word was used in a SpongeBob episode, in which Planton hired Patrick to help boost his chum sales. Patrick uses two phrases, 'Chum is Fum' and 'Fum is Chum' during the episode. I am guessing those two phases mean the same thing. Just something for you, SpongeBob fans out there.
Say what you will about Vince , Triple H or anyone running WWE if a wrestler was to show up in a condition like Jeff Hardy’s at Victory Road they wouldn’t have been let in the building let alone the locker room or make their entrance for a match
Say what you will about TNA, WCW, AEW, etc... but none of them have ever displayed the level of incompetence and negligence that the WWE has in the past. Remember what happened to Owen Hart? Not even this thing with Jeff is anywhere near as catastrophic as that. RIP Owen.

I vaguely remember seeing TNA in passing as a kid off & on and I was so scared of Kurt Angle and Sting. Not sure why but it was to the point I’d literally start crying when they’d come on screen lol.
I still to this date hold a grudge I never got my six months free of the VOD even after mailing my cable bill and won't forget every time I call about it, i was either sitting on hold or being transferred somewhere else. I didn't buy another Impact PPV until Slammiversary 2017.
Do your homework, hardy himself said it in an interview "i was all soma'ed up" he was on perscribed soma pills.. a muscle relaxer. Which has been a common theme in the business for as long as ive been alive.
While Jeff Hardy’s demons are well known for getting him into trouble as addictions are very serious I feel TNA is also to blame for this. It was reported many times that when Jeff arrived at the event they had many hours throughout the day to send Jeff home since he was in no condition to wrestle. They had time to workout an angle where he would be taken out of the match. Yet they didn’t. Why was that? Jeff could have hurt himself badly or hurt sting or attacked fans that night in his condition. Yet TNA officials let that match happen. There was more going on that night besides Hardy’s condition
...aside from everything else, can we discuss how fugly that TNA World Championship belt looked? Makes you wonder if Jeff Hardy deliberately got messed up just so he wouldnt hold that title belt again 🤣 (J/k, I know addiction issues are no joke. Belt's still fugly though)
He disappeared for hours and no one had any clue he was fucked up. They didn't know till he stumbled down the ramp and in the match you can see while sting is doing his entrance, the ref throws the x and tells somebody to tell Eric what's going on
Tbf outside the ring Matt was in a just a bad or possibly worse state than Jeff at the time, its a miracle he was the one holding it together on camera

Wouldn't have worked, wrestlers need more time to get prepped for a match than what they had. Nobody else was available or ready to take Jeff's place.

Say what you will about Vince , Triple H or anyone running WWE if a wrestler was to show up in a condition like Jeff Hardy’s at Victory Road they wouldn’t have been let in the building let alone the locker room or make their entrance for a match
Say what you will about TNA, WCW, AEW, etc... but none of them have ever displayed the level of incompetence and negligence that the WWE has in the past. Remember what happened to Owen Hart? Not even this thing with Jeff is anywhere near as catastrophic as that. RIP Owen.

I vaguely remember seeing TNA in passing as a kid off & on and I was so scared of Kurt Angle and Sting. Not sure why but it was to the point I’d literally start crying when they’d come on screen lol.
Props to Sting for agreeing with the crowd.

I still to this date hold a grudge I never got my six months free of the VOD even after mailing my cable bill and won't forget every time I call about it, i was either sitting on hold or being transferred somewhere else. I didn't buy another Impact PPV until Slammiversary 2017.

Do your homework, hardy himself said it in an interview "i was all soma'ed up" he was on perscribed soma pills.. a muscle relaxer. Which has been a common theme in the business for as long as ive been alive.

While Jeff Hardy’s demons are well known for getting him into trouble as addictions are very serious I feel TNA is also to blame for this. It was reported many times that when Jeff arrived at the event they had many hours throughout the day to send Jeff home since he was in no condition to wrestle. They had time to workout an angle where he would be taken out of the match. Yet they didn’t. Why was that? Jeff could have hurt himself badly or hurt sting or attacked fans that night in his condition. Yet TNA officials let that match happen. There was more going on that night besides Hardy’s condition
The only reason I didn't watch TNA is because I didn't have cable 15-20 years ago.

Why did management even let Hardy go out there. They could have subbed in anybody. They had a great roster at the time.
He disappeared for hours and no one had any clue he was fucked up. They didn't know till he stumbled down the ramp and in the match you can see while sting is doing his entrance, the ref throws the x and tells somebody to tell Eric what's going on
