Why 2 tags?

Soldiers with combat MOS’s carry multiple dog tags and put them in their boots, shirt pockets ect in case their limbs get blown off they can be identified

I believe if a soldier died one of their buddies would take one of the tags for burial record keeping purposes and the other would stay on the soldier
