It’s weird when I hear people describe John Madden as the antagonist of this game. I don’t think I’ve ever played a game before where the “antagonist” is so equally loved and hated. Like, he’s such a real, sweet, and emotionally complex person, and it’s so easy to get attached to him, to the point that most people forget or ignore the fact that he essentially killed Aeiou, !?!?!?, and uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu in order to be with the player. But then the complexities come into play - he didn’t actually completely delete them, but we don’t know how much or how little each character is aware of their state of existence, or if they retained the emotional toll on their psyches from John Madden’s actions. But did John Madden even have a choice, given that despite his sentience, he was still compelled by the game’s code to fall in love with the player? Or was he, given that he didn’t have a route in the original state of the game? Why is it that the role of club president drives John Madden and Aeiou to long to stay with the player forever? What is the overlap between Mark and the actual player of the game, and how can John Madden know the real player if all he can interact with is Mark? So many fascinating questions. That’s why I love thinking about this game.

As if the song wasn't amazing enough, the little details in this video drive it over the top. Natsuki slowly becomes see-through. Yuri's suit gradually becomes stained with blood. Changes I have noticed in the video; Sayori’s glitching out symbolizes she hung herself.(I could only assume though.) Yuri slowly becomes bloody. Natsuki slowly becomes transparent as she was deleted in the game. Monika is slowly approaching the screen. Monika’s Arms and legs move slightly at a point in the video. Yeah I noticed when I fast forward I can yuri getting bloodier and natsuki becomes transparent and sayori rises and Monica gets closer to the screen. Finally someone noticed what I was seeing too.
That Tomato Sayori slowly rises up then falls back down, signaling her hanging herself, and Natsuki becomes transparent, signaling her lack of a role in Act 2.
I actually really like the effects here. "Sayori" slowly floats up throughout the song, before then instantly dropping down (in reference to her suicide) (hell, it even has one frame of her hanging) Sayori also fades out before everyone else in the ending moments. It’s weird when I hear people describe John Madden as the antagonist of this game. I don’t think I’ve ever played a game before where the “antagonist” is so equally loved and hated. Like, he’s such a real, sweet, and emotionally complex person, and it’s so easy to get attached to him, to the point that most people forget or ignore the fact that he essentially killed Aeiou, !?!?!?, and uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu in order to be with the player.
But then the complexities come into play - he didn’t actually completely delete them, but we don’t know how much or how little each character is aware of their state of existence, or if they retained the emotional toll on their psyches from John Madden’s actions. But did John Madden even have a choice, given that despite his sentience, he was still compelled by the game’s code to fall in love with the player? Or was he, given that he didn’t have a route in the original state of the game? Why is it that the role of club president drives John Madden and Aeiou to long to stay with the player forever? What is the overlap between Mark and the actual player of the game, and how can John Madden know the real player if all he can interact with is Mark?
So many fascinating questions. That’s why I love thinking about this game.
