Tomislav, That S shaped rest is my design, and I told Brent he could make it. As near as I can tell, it is the only bowl rest that was designed by an actual bowl turner. It is sloped about 15 degrees, which kind of matches the inside curve of a 12 inch bowl. The idea is that you set it up by the rim, and as you turn out the inside of a bowl, you only have to pivot the rest to the inside of the bowl, no more wiggling the whole banjo around. I designed it for the insides of bowls, but found it works great on the outsides of bowls as well. Also handy for the outsides of hollow forms. I was actually thinking of sending you some. Brent does make high end products!
No one picked up the grinder platform. There is a some what similar one called Right Angle. It is pretty sound. Mike Waldt did a review of it. I have them, but prefer my own, of course....
I bought a Robust Sweet Sixteen in 2018 at the Virginia Woodturning Symposium, but got home and decided I wanted to change my order to the American Beauty. I called Robust and Deb, Brent’s wife answered the phone and was extremely helpful in upgrading my order. I’ve never regretted my decision. I’ve called several times and spoken to both Brent and Deb, and they have been extremely courteous and very helpful. I’ve gotten several of the tool rest and several of their tools and collet handles (all great). You’ll enjoy using your new ones. Cheers, Tom
I just bought for myself for Christmas the a Harvey T60S lathe to go along with my 3 year old Record Herald lathe. One thing I noticed is how much better the tool rest is on the Harvey. The Harvey tool rest is huge I think 12 inch. I the Record 6 and 9 inch also but they are showing signs of wear and dings. I have one of the s looking tool rest but rarely use it it has a nice hardened round stock ontop of a larger round rod and it just gets in the way when trying to use inside a bowl, I forget the manufacturer. I just got a Simple Woodturning Tools Scraper Tool Rest Platform with Post and Clamping Collar for Woodturning Lathe that I love to use with Simple broad scraper IV but good with any square or rectangle frame tools (mostly used with wood/resin work). Watching your videos I’m now transitioning from the carbide tools to traditional turning tools and amazing the final results and reduction in sanding! Carbide tools I still use on resin and wood/resin works as the seem to work better on those. Also had to laugh when you showed yourself cleaning up! Not because it was funny but because I’m obsessed as my son tells me with cleaning up the shop but I hate working in a mess lol. All the best and have a Happy New Year!
I like clean shop as well unless I'm turning some big batches but even then I like to clean at the end of the day. I just like to come next day in and find clean shop. And I was thought that was in trades. So you are not alone☺️ All the best to you and your family in 2025🎉
I’m not sure why it is so satisfying watching someone else clean up their shop. Makes me want to get out and clean the heck out of mine! Almost. Lol. No it’s on my resolution list for the new year along with “New Year, new me!” I am trying to get some health back after multiple surgeries in the last couple years that messed me up pretty badly. May the force be with me and everyone else in this coming new year! Tomislav happy new year and thank you for your service to our turning family. I have watched all your videos, many multiple times and I have learned so much from you! Thanks again! I pray everyone has a safe, successful, and prosperous new year! Take care, Scott
Hi Scott, sorry to hear about health issues but glad to hear it's going for better and I know that in no time you'll be back at the lathe. Happy new year sir
I have several robust tool rests to go with my American Beauty lathe, they are absolutely top notch design and quality build and an absolute pleasuere to work with and so well built I will be passing them onto my grandson! One of my favourites is the box rest, although a specialised tool it is brillaint for what it is intended and presents a really solid platform. ENjoy
Robust has been great to deal with I have several of their rest to go with my American Beauty. Dealing with Brent and Deb adds a personal touch. When you call with a question your speaking to the guy that owns and builds the equipment. I just recently upgrade to their new Vacuum chuck system. As always straight forward opinions and honest answers are why I continue to appreciate what you do
That's awesome Tomislav! You are going to love those tool rests -- Robust rests are really good equipment. I have a couple and will be adding more in the future as I need them. Hope you and your family had a very Merry Christmas and wishing you all a Happy New Year.
Glad to see you got the Robust tool rests with hardened rods. They're great, huh? Did you know that D-Way Tools also sells the hardened rods to connect to the top of other tool rests with JB Weld Epoxy? My most recent lathe (large Rikon with sliding bed) came with hardened rods. Part of why I chose to trust it. Happy New Year.
I recommend the low-profile probably in 6" as an excellent addition to the set, that one allows you to get your hand under and reach behind fine pieces e.g. finials. I have the 9" version and it is on my lathe 90% of the time.
Nice looking tool rest. Looks like top quality. I really like the way that you clean your shop after using it, and not leaving a mess. Happy New Year from North Carolina! 🇺🇸
As an American Beauty owner, I have already "accumulated" most of those rests.... Except for that 14" "S" rest.. that's still on my wishlist. Enjoy your new items and have a happy new year.
I love my Robust 9" shear scraping tool rest, it's my go to for most of my turning. They make quality tools and equipment. Happy New Year buddy enjoy time with the family
Yes I have a couple Robust tool rests. I also made a couple rests from sections I cut out of a 4 inch diameter hydraulic cylinder that I had to junk out. The cut edges got shallow grooves milled along their length and then drill rod was bedded in place with JB weld. They look just like Robust rests. 1” bolts sourced from a local surplus dealer became the posts. The short rests really come in handy. It has been interesting to me that I don’t see professional turners use curved rests much at all.
Congratulations on the new toolrests. Hope to see them all used in forthcoming videos in the New Year. Happy with the carpet/flooring in front of the lathe? Thanks for the video.
My favorite two Robust tool rests are the 2 sizes of simple J rests. These are straight except for on one end. I don’t know about that one Brent sent that’s a little bit S shaped, but I had a similar one for my old Jet lathe and never found any use for it. The long curved tool rests are good for really big bowls. When you’re done cleaning up your shop, please come help me clean mine! 🎉 happy new year.
Robust does make nice tool rests. The hardened steel rod is the answer to cast iron tool rests. They stay smooth because turning tools cannot nick the surfaces. Nice selection of sizes. I have to add that Trent Bosch has a similar line of tool rests. I have a selection of both Robust and Trent Bosch.🙂🙂
...I'm sure wives across the world would appreciate you teaching husbands how to clean that fast...😆 Thanks for the review...I'm interested and will check them out...hope you and your family have a wonderful and safe holiday season! Matt
Nice upgrade. I have the 6 inch rest and use it most often. The curved one looks great but likely way too big for what i tend to do. Have a happy new year.
Ill be checking them out bin wanting a smaller 1 for my lathe i only have 12" and it gets in my way when doing smaller projects thanks for sharing didnt no they make them and so many different sizes. Hope you and your family have a great New Year
Hi Tommi, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. I recently did the same thing with Toolrests, only I got mine via Marco from Vicmarc here in Australia. I got the 100, 200, 400 and a Curved (simple curve not the S as robohippy explained in another comment). Marco even painted them black to match my Lathe, rather than Vicmarc's signature Blue. Vicmarc use a similar design as the comfort rest with the hardened rod on top. Didn't get a 300 as I already have that size which came with my Laguna 24/36. Here's to another fantastic year of turning. Be safe.
I wish you made this video a week ago. I just bought a OneWay toolset and I hate it. It has a wide flat top and they finished it with a thick coat of paint or powder coating. Using a skew or sheer scraping was nearly impossible because it digs into the finish. To make it useable I had to put it on the wire wheel to remove the finish on the top edge. I like the bar on the Robust. This will be my next purchase.😉
Hi Tomi, this video is perfectly timed! I have already decided to invest in some of these rests 😉 I was just debating between the comfort and the low profile?? I see you have the comfort ones, any advice on which version to go with? Merry Christmas to you and your family, and i wish you a great new year 😊
Hi sir,I haven't tried low profile, but I think comfort line is great all rounder tool rest and should do the job perfectly Merry Christmas and happy new year 🎉
My Robust toolrests are from their "Low Profile" series. Skookum as can be. The toolrests that came with my first lathe were pitiful. My very first lathe upgrade was a couple of Robust toolrests.
His Tomoslav, hope you had a nice Christmas. Just a comment, I thought Stratos lathes had 1 inch tool post size and Robust only had imperial sizes, I.e. 1 inch also. Just saying
Really? Then it's really simple to click to another video. Many do understand this video and its not in quantity of tool rests but rather in type of it

I came here to comment how much I enjoy that rest for the inside and rims of bowls. Its one of my favorites!
Rob
Good work on the design. It looks pretty sweet.
It’s on my wish list that I sent to the Mrs 🤞
I didn't know that, glad to hear that and Robust indeed make high end products
Hi Reed, I have a couple of your tool rests. Great design - thank you for developing it! Did anyone pisk up your bench grinder platform rest design?
No one picked up the grinder platform. There is a some what similar one called Right Angle. It is pretty sound. Mike Waldt did a review of it. I have them, but prefer my own, of course....
Dude, Robust is 2 hours from my house. Brent is the best and they have an open house every year with a turner.
Thanks Tom, they really put a lot of effort in customer service and it shows and products are top notch
The Robust Tool Rest(s) are the best. Wish I could afford the Lathe!

Great tool rests. I have a 4" comfort height which I love for small projects.
First time I saw that small rest was in one of your videos

Scotch brighting the lathe bedways on the drill is a great idea. Thanks for sharing it!

Nice looking tool rests. I hope you're having a lovely time with your family.
Thank you, Tomislav! Wishing for ALL of us, a safe, healthy, and peaceful New Year, 2025!
Thank you very much, to you and your family all the best in new year

Thank you Mark so much

I have three robust tool rests and also the robust sweet sixteen lathe. All are wonderful!
Glad to see you got the Robust tool rests with hardened rods. They're great, huh? They are awsome indeed.
I heard of dway all the nice stuff and I know my mentor like there tools as well so it has to be good 😀

I have the 12” and it’s super. I hope you enjoy your time off Tomislav. See you next year.
I Have 2 of their tool rests and just love them. They work great and I highly recommend them.
Nice looking tool rest. Looks like top quality. I really like the way that you clean your shop after using it, and not leaving a mess. Happy New Year from North Carolina! 🇺🇸

I have 3 robust tool rests and they're fantastic!
🕶thanks for sharing Tomislav. Very nice tool rests.
Hi Tomi,
A while back i also changed from a standard toolrest to a Robust toolrest.
Makes a lot of difference in smooth toolmotion over the toolrest.
I love my Robust 9" shear scraping tool rest, it's my go to for most of my turning. They make quality tools and equipment. Happy New Year buddy enjoy time with the family
Thank you buddy, all the best to you and your family as well

Honestly I don't use it either, never found the need for one,but its nice to have if I ever got the need 😊
I must agree. I really like the Robust tool rests. I use them on my Powermatic 3520C.
Congratulations on the new toolrests. Hope to see them all used in forthcoming videos in the New Year. Happy with the carpet/flooring in front of the lathe? Thanks for the video.
Thanks Joris
These are some recycled material matts for under dishwashers, nice and thick and So far they are comfy ☺️

I hope you try the "J-rest" on the inside of bowls (and other hollow forms). The close support it provides for scrapers and gouges is unparalleled!
I wish you made this video a week ago. I just bought a OneWay toolset and I hate it. It has a wide flat top and they finished it with a thick coat of paint or powder coating. I lovey box tool rest
Tomislav, you really need to use a good coat of no silicon past wax on the lathe bed. Much slicker and much better rust prevention vs wd40.
I did, but I wasn't all that happy, probably wasn't quality paste wax
Hi Tomi, this video is perfectly timed!
I have already decided to invest in some of these rests 😉 I was just debating between the comfort and the low profile??

They do have 25mm and 1 inch as there is a tiny difference, its best that you send a message to them.
Can I get that set in Canada? If so, do you know where?
Try sending email direct on Robust Tools and I'm sure they can send it
His Tomoslav, hope you had a nice Christmas. Just a comment, I thought Stratos lathes had 1 inch tool post size and Robust only had imperial sizes, I.e. 1 inch also. Just saying
Hi, stratos XL and twister XL which is mine both have 30mm tool rest post. That is why it had time be custom made.😊
We make custom sizes including 25mm, 30mm and other imperial sizes.
How much did all those rests cost?
I don't know honestly as these were send to me. But you don't need right away all sizes, start with 9 inch and then buy as you need
Very good tool rests the downside is price.
Axminster tools do a very similar product much cheaper.
Axminster also carries Robust toolrests.
Robust aber angefertigt in China deutlich zum sehen bei schweißnäte aber passend für deine chinesischen Drechselbank
Its been custom made in US, not in China. Check your facts first sir
how is having a different tool rest is going to change my life. Click bait video
Really? Then it's really simple to click to another video.
Many do understand this video and its not in quantity of tool rests but rather in type of it
